I just completed a tube of ASE’s simply for bullion. After having ONE tube, I think I’ll switch to AGE’s.while I’m renting for the same reasons, more wealth per volume. Personal opinion, but I would prefer silver for those moments you feel like needing to liquidate assets at a smaller percentage.

For many of the reasons you mentioned is why I have focused a lot more on gold since 2017. Premiums have certainly increased this year and it makes it difficult to see any return if you need to sell. However, I am bullish on silver in 2021 because of green technologies and the ever increased versatility silver adds in the industrial/tech sector. I think in many ways, it's irreplaceable in those uses (at least until graphene is widely adopted). Though there is plentiful supply, it is much more rare than copper and demand I think will increase which could lead to the narrowing of the GSR. How that will translate in premiums to buy is my guess not much less. They will continue to be high making it a very long term proposition for the strong stomached of silver stackers. My tummy is weak, hence why I focus more on gold. But, I am still optimistic for silver. Thanks for the discussion and for sharing your reasons so well! Happy New Year

Thanks, Sal. Too many unknowns with the economy to know what it’ll do. All i can say is that there are a lot of assets outperforming it and with crazy premiums, it’s working at a further disadvantage. Who knows, though? Happy New Year, Sal! 🤘

I like the idea you're disciplined, and if buying silver keeps you that way, than drive on. You have enough money to buy gold, you just won't be buying that much. Why I collect gold? It is unique. No other precious metal on the periodic table has the colour of gold. It's does not tarnish and has low reactivity. Only highly concentrated nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and aqua regia, a mixture of the two acids I mentioned dissolve gold. Gold is very valuable. There is more profit to be made from gold and it is the number one metal investors flock to in times of uncertainty. I love gold but as I mentioned I always feel I am being shortchanged when I buy 1 ounce of gold because a 1 ounce coin is very small. I feel I should have a 5 or 10 Oz coin for the price I pay for that 1 ounce.

I think there's a lot of people making that shift right now from silver to gold, even long time silver buyers are moving to gold. I even notice it on eBay, there's listings for very popular silver pieces that stay up much longer and I'm seeing more and more gold running out faster, I'm noticing the shift myself. Gold is a slower process but It builds up in a short amount of time. Don't underestimate the potential of silver, silver may be frustrating, but it will have its day.

@@JohnThompson-hc8bd Other goods or labor. I can agree in some situations gold and silver might be useful after an shtf situation. But honestly I feel like in some situations it's going to take a while before precious metals regain their value for a few reasons. 1. You can't eat silver, silver dosn't give you light, or heat your home. Silver provides no intrinsic value. It derives it's value from being rare and pretty. 2. How are you/other parties going to verify that silver is real? If it is truly a really bad situation there's no way to verify that silver/gold isn't just some other metal plated in silver/gold. Now to play the other side of the fence, I can definitely see how in some situations gold/silver would be a great idea. In a hyper-inflation/deflation it is possible that precious metals will retain alot of their value compared to your countries currency. Also in say lesser disasters where the power grid is still up and many businesses are still functioning it will still retain value. I also believe that in the years following a disaster (provided we can recover) I believe it will regain it's value. Honestly I don't think it's a bad investment so long as you diversify and don't put all your eggs in one basket. I believe the scenarios where precious metals retain their value are actually alot more likely to happen as well. I believe that the most likely shtf event is going to be another great depression. That's just my thoughts on the matter though.
@JohnThompson-hc8bd
@JohnThompson-hc8bd 3 жыл бұрын
@@Zoroaster4 continuing with the SHTF theme, I recommend constitutional silver coins as they are very recognizable, fractional and not easily counterfeited. Now if someone passes off a plated gold or silver coin it could come at a very high price at the hands of the recipient, at least in my area of the world. I also recommend having food, water, shelter, lead and other barter items for SHTF and your run of the mill depression. It’s good insurance. Also, people are very specialized these days in their skill sets and will have to devise some system of exchange and PMs will only be a part of that. IOUs from trusted community members my also be a way to exchange and become a form of money in the short term. It’s hard to say what will take in your area or mine. Silver will at least 2-3X if we continue to kick the fiat can down the road making it a good saving vehicle. I wish I had saved all the silver coins when I was a kid. I would be much better off today than I am. Thx for sharing your thoughts.

Historically silver stays low in economic hardship while gold climbs in price. Only after a couple years does it suddenly skyrocket in value as it stabilizes with the gold/silver ratio. I dont expect it to be rising in value soon. Probably not even in 2021. But because the low cost and pandemic, mines are closing due to the fact it costs more to mine silver than to sell it. But because it is such an industrial metal, stores will start to run low but the manufacturers have no choice but to buy it at an increasing price. I have a strong feeling silver will spike in value in a year or two.

I think you're all missing the point that everyone is going green and silver will be one of the main components required for electric cars, solar energy, mobile phones and a multitude of other things. Gold is a great investment but so is silver and I am also sticking money in crypto, even though I think that ship may have sailed as far as serious earning potential goes now if you've just got on board. One thing's for sure, with the way they're all pumping money into ailing econimies, fiat currencies like the dollar are finished. If silver is a bad investment why has JP Morgan the Russians and Chinese been hoarding millions of ounces recently?

Silver coins as a commodity is the same regarding the premiums as if you buy another commodity like petrol and you spend 20% in the barrel to keep it in your garage....said that I like coins, and I like and enjoy collecting with my kid we have fun together...also Im not selling anytime in life unless is absolutely needed so Im sure is a great thing (savings..not investment) that I enjoy. If you want to make money there are now better options...100% agree. Also Gold is a no brainer, tier 1 asset...is a time capsule to put your fiat value over decades and keep it probably with same gains then...but is not its purpose, its purpose is backing your wealth...as banks do...I have few gold coins..but men..too expensive to do a collection to look at and hold in your hand...if I could I will put 40% of my fiat in Gold all day long..but lots of bills every month😂👍

I have been in silver since 1982 with pre-64 quarters, dimes and half dollars. 1986 , I became addicted to gold like an alcoholic is to whiskey! Gradual, steady eddy stacking for many , many years when no one called it “stacking”. I love precious metals for their intrinsic long term value, and I consider myself a collector and an investor. So, my approach is nebulous and undirected. All I know is I paid a helluva lot less than where things are today. So, the time to sell is when there is a need to sell, which may be never. Who knows!

Okay, yeah. You're a great example of someone who would have the platform to buy and move and profit from hot coins. Most of us don't. So, if a person's justification for paying wild premium is that they could get that back (i.e., it's not wasted premium) hopefully they have your kind of platform. Very few do.
@belgiboing
@belgiboing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the candidness. You hit it right about silver. It’s not about the price. It’s the premium that’s put on top of the purchase. That premium is quite higher than gold that it negates the time gains and amplifies the volatility. You’d have to stay with silver closely for 10-20 years for the investment to pay off. Interestingly, Silver is so much more useful than Gold in many industrial applications. However, it seems that even though Silver is the best material for many applications, when it hits a high price to acquire, manufacturers can use other materials and the decline in performance of substitutes are still acceptable. Think batteries and circuit boards. Unless someone invents a revolutionary product where Silver is a raw material and there’s no acceptable substitute, the performance of silver as an investment will trend similar as in the past 20-50 years.

Happy new year to you too!! Always good to hear some counter arguments to stacking silver. Silver is indeed more of hassle than gold. Personally, I do hold some silver but I only buy up until the average price I pay including premiums (!) is at most 75% of fair value as a margin of safety. Then the question arises what fair value is. For that I use the conservative fair value metric of Lyn Alden for gold and divide that by the 20-year average GSR. According to that metric silver right now is just a little over fair value, not grossly undervalued as many claim. There is considerable upside potential though. As I value silver indirectly from the amount of M2 per capita, a similar overvaluation of silver as in 2011 would take it to around $90-100. If it will reach that, I don't know and even if it does, such a spike is usually very short lived. But still, my aim is for silver only to be about 12,5% of my precious metals holding, divided over physical and ETF. The ETF-part is to be able to make use of a short lived spike in the price IF that occurs (a sort of right tail risk hedge, if you will). Concerning the nature of silver as a commodity, I would like to point towards an article by Jan Nieuwenhuijs: seekingalpha.com/article/4373933-warning-misleading-silver-supply-and-demand-data In this article he explains that silver isn't trading like a commodity, i.e. that there is no correlation between price and demand/supply, as it has a high stock-to-flow ratio. There is several decades of demand for silver in above ground stock, and at the right price that stock turns into supply. Due to this high stock-to-flow ratio, estimates vary from 20 to 45, silver trades more like a currency, albeit due to its small market cap a small currency (hence the volatility).

You can get cull silver eagles for $29.90 right now from bullion exchanges. A 2020 gold eagle is $1,982 from BGASC. That ratio is 66.3. Not much worse than the GSR of 71.4. That is for culls though. You will definitely get more premium back when you sell silver eagles back vs. Gold also.

Great video! I appreciate the creativity you put into the presentation of it all, very well done! As far as your thoughts on silver, I’d have to say I’ve swung in the same direction, sorta. I’ll still plan to buy silver in 2021, but only if I feel it’s at price that’s too good to pass up, with the premium included. I’ve also shifted to buying silver as a means to “lock up cash” and “hopefully” grow it, to then buy more gold with it. I flipped a lot of my silver into gold this year and it was at a decent profit. So, I now plan to use silver as a tool to get more gold. Seems to be working...but only on the few occasions when the “stars align” just right!

@@2is1gold Hey! Speaking of locking up cash, something you may or may not have heard of when poking around the crypto sphere (depends on how deep down the rabbit whole you went), is DeFi or decentralized finance. There are crypto protocols/projects that allow you to do more than just buy their digital token and hold it, in anticipation of it appreciating in value, but allow you to earn passive income from them. This is from something they’ve termed as “staking” or “yield farming.” Think of it as sort of savings account on steroids with some having APYs from 40 - 2,000%! I know...seems scammy! Most are scams, but a few are developing as very legitimate. Very high risk, but of course high reward! I jumped into stacking precious metals just 8 years ago before fully understanding the market, when the price of silver was around £25 - £30/oz. Later, my lowest paid was around £12-£13/oz, with my average price paid being £20 over that time. I have been "under water" until recently, unable to sell without a loss, yet confident it will come good one day, if only for my grandchildren. I could now break out around even but have no plans to sell and Bitcoin is now my main area of financial interest. Having far exceeded my target of 4-figure oz in silver, together with the sheer bulk/volume and storage problems, etc, I gradually concentrated on gold for it's compactness, portability, desirability, beauty, rarity, etc. I have not bought silver in any amounts for a couple of years, just mainly the Queen's Beast coin series, along with the gold series. My gold has averaged at £980/oz so an increase of around 50%. Far better than having fast-depreciating fiat currency at risk in a bank, stolen for likely bail-ins. My main regret is having bought around 30 of those colourised/gold-gilded/holographic coins (Brit's/ASE's/Philly's/Lib's, etc) as, even though bought at discounted prices on Ebay from dealers asking much more on their own website, they have not realised the potential I hoped for. I would suggest newcomers to silver stacking avoid them and just pay for metal content as I mainly have. That is my story on my silver buying.

It's definitely manipulated but probably silver even more. The COMEX nearly failed in 2020 from paper manipulation and lack of being able to deliver physical metals when the future contracts were up. "Deliveries" are still way up this year and if buyers continue to demand physical gold instead of dollar value it could have a squeeze type movement. Granted, BIG if. In silver JP Morgan admitted to being a giant price manipulator when they paid their $250 billion fine but now are hoarding all the physical they can get. As if they *don't* know something to cause that big a U-turn, only thing that keeps me looking at silver.

I'm setting a silver quota limit of one monster box (somewhere in the future), because of the volume and weight. One tube of silver feels heavy in hand, more so 3 tubes to equal the value of a single ounce of gold. One monster box should be more than enough to play with coins, get to know them, for exchanging silver for gold when ratio drops, to keep stacking fun, and as a little gamble in case silver shoots up. So I'm in no rush to fill that monster box with silver, I focus heavily in gold and buy silver just to round up the budget. In terms of saving efficiency, silver has the same premium as 1/4 oz gold, while gold ounces have unbeatable premium and ultra compact storage.

I agree with you so hard haha. I mean. If you think of gold and silver like computer chips, gold is this super advanced chip that holds way more data than bulky old chips that can only hold a fraction of data. Do you wanna buy a large hard drive that holds very little data, or a small hard drive that holds a ton of data. That’s just how I see it. Silver I won’t say is a waste of space, but you can use your space better with gold.

I appreciate your insights and thanks for making this video. As a newbie, I'm confused as to why palladium, used in petrol vehicles, has been able to rise so substantially over the past several years, but silver will be artificially suppressed by banks, etc. What is the difference? I'm still trying to understand why, historically, silver prices remain so low compared to other metals. Thanks for any insights you can share.

Mostly it has to do with rarity. Silver simply isn’t very rare.

This was eye opening and I will not buy silver for the foreseeable future, just gold! I did a calculation. If you take the $11 premium on a silver eagle and multiply it by the amount of ounces of silver it takes to get the value match to gold spot (79.09 today). The premium dollar amount is $870 for the silver. Substantially higher than the premium on any 1oz gold coin. My calculation was as follows 1oz Gold = 1809 1oz silver = 22.82 1809 / 22.82 = 79.09 x 11 (silver eagle premium) = total premium expense on silver vs 1oz of gold

I really like this video and it's true what you said. The only ones making money on silver are the dealers, the coin shops. Silver premiums are waay too high. When silver was quite low, it was very hard to find; I feel the online dealers as well as local coin shops didn't want to sell silver at a low price. Silver collectors can't win. Sigh.

I have been thinking the same thing lately. I can get 2 1/10 gold coins for about 200 LESS than 20 oz of silver. I live in Canada so prices and premiums are higher.

@@2is1gold agreed and far less volatility. Steady rise for the most part and seeing in the past 14 years gold has really only been down for 4 of them. 👍
