There's two people I follow on tiktok, mommacusses and toriphantom, and I think they give a much better representation of what gentle parenting is actually like. They also have a podcast together called childproof, which I haven't actually got around to listening to but if it's anything like their individual channels I'd expect is good

For those asking about books to read on therapeutic parenting the best one is The A to Z of Therapeutic Parenting by Sarah Naish. Best to get as a physical copy though rather than an ebook because it has a section that you can flick through to find suggestions for the therapeutic way to deal with certain situations (ie. aggression, shouting, persistent lying etc...). It is mainly aimed at parents for children who have experienced trauma, but the suggestions will work for all children. :)

What are the chances - literally just today another KZbinr I follow did a short about how they like gentle parenting and how it can get confused with permissive parenting, and the differences including boundaries! So it's definitely something that gets blurred. I think especially with more short form content it can be hard to explain things in detail, and also of course when learning people may use terms without fully understanding all the aspects of how they're normally used. I think that's why it's so important to share examples etc and not just rely on summary terms, so that everyone knows what you're talking about. I love your approach. It's so measured and well reasoned, and grounded in understanding childhood development. I think the overarching named styles can be really helpful for researching, getting ideas and deciding what to do when confronted by something new, but using them as guidelines to blend together and make a style that works for your family is such a great approach. I found the same is true in childcare settings with different educational approaches.

Such a great video, and a refreshing take on gentle parenting. I also loved hearing about therapeutic parenting and would love to hear more about it. I found it interesting how you would physically remove the child from situations that called for it, because I have often thought that trying to talk these things out with a toddler just seems silly 😅 (my son is 1 and not really a toddler yet, but I'm preparing myself!)

I would be interested to see how your parenting styles will adapt as little one gets older. I have had to change my parenting style for each of my 3 children as one style doesn't work for all. Love your video by the way!

@@BriefEncouters sleep training worked for my first and third but not my second. I have had to change how I approach their behaviours as well because being firm works with my first but only keeping calm works with my second. Xx

This was a great video with awesome examples. I have read a tonne about Gentle and Respectful parenting, which I mainly follow (though like you mix it up a bit and am firm on boundaries). I haven’t read about Therapeutic parenting and it sounds interesting, so will be looking into it further. Thanks for shedding some more light on it!

Sounds like you were such a great foster parent and sounds like you're currently also a fantastic parent! You basically are mostly gentle parenting, just not in the way it's misrepresented by opponents of the style.

This is really interesting. I hadn't heard of therapeutic parenting before, and it is definitely something I'll be looking into. The pressure to be a good parent is immense, but like you said, no one is perfect and you just have to try your best.

Yes I love this so much! I feel like so many people see the boundary-less permissive parenting called 'gentle parenting' and decide its not for them and must be authoritative as the only other option. I like to call it 'respectful parenting' these days, as fundamentally I respect and treat my child like any other human, whilst being aware of their developmental capabilities. Sounds like Oryn is set up for a pretty great life with such an informed and switched on mum :D Thanks for sharing

I admit I’ve never heard of this kind of parenting, and I totally get it! I don’t want kids (and don’t have any) so I oviously don’t know the best thing, but honestly this sounds great for any kid but especially for fostered/adopted kids and for neurodivergant kids! I definitely would have thrived with this parenting. My parents were the opposite of this 😂

"Gentle parenting" is just treating children with respect as autonomous, separate beings, which is ultimately what is happening with you and your child. Edit: You could even say therapeutic parenting is a type of "gentle parenting" - if gentle parenting is an umbrella term for nonpermissive but respectful parenting styles. I prefer when discussing this to define what I mean and say "healthy, age appropriate, autonomous boundaries and expectations and noncarceral/nonpunitive consequences" - which are very different than being gentle or permissive. These are all just slightly different ways of treating a child with respect.

The thing with throwing the sand, is that children under the age of I don’t know, 3-4 maybe, don’t even understand cause and effect. So doing a gentle parenting like some people do, would not even make sense. Trying to explain why something is unacceptable to somebody that doesn’t even have the maturity to understand… You know, you can most often find something good to take from parenting advices, but never do it 100%. I agree with you, you take the baby out if the situation, you can say no and show it in you face expression that your not happy, the child will more likely understand that…
