The ‪@sonicstate‬ video I mentioned : • Moog Matriarch Review ...
0:00 Intro
1:51 Hands on
3:14 Voice Modes
7:12 Oscillators
9:03 Mixer
11:00 Filter
15:47 Delay
19:44 VCA modes
21:07 xxxxx
23:22 Mod Bus
27:15 Arp / Seq
32:09 PATCHING (its bed time ill keep doing chapters tomorrow.)
54:13 Long Conclusions
COMPLAINTS BY MODULE :
ARP
Switch to disconnect keyboard from arp / sequencer
Even a way to point the arp / sequencer to certain voices
Ratchet and tie as performance controls during the arp would be great
MOD
A cv in for amount, so I could modulate this whole bus with something other than the mod wheel
Or a cv in to replace the lfo with some other source that could also modulate the whole bus
Just like the sub 37, the range on the pot for pitch is 90% useless
UTILITIES
I actually think they're exactly what they need to be.
Being vca's, being bipolar, mults working as mixers, all good choices.
OSC
Why can't I disconnect oscillators from pitch to use them as unsynced lfo's
the lowest notch on the CV switch should be lo frequency.
MIXER
I cannot believe it isn't stereo.
Needs to be stereo, even if it's just cv in for panning, which there is definitely room for the jacks.
If or even better, panning CV and pots for panning
FILTER
One master cut off gives us some cool behaviors, but it really makes me wish each filter had a seperate cutoff also.
Spacing would be much more useful of it actually changed both filter cutoffs, and was modulatable like that.
Because as it stands, using the filters truly seperately would require a lot ton of external patching.
Envelope amt in should break the normalled connection to envelope 1, letting us use the amt knob to attenuate some other signal, instead of just modulating the envelope contribution.
ENVELOPES
Are fine, but modulating times would be nice
DELAY
Spacing works way great here, and honestly I think it's better than two separate times
I would love a switch like the filter, for series, parallel, or ping pong.
OUTPUT
Cv ins should break normalling, but that's it.
And for everything on the back, note & gate outs for individual voices would make this so much more flexible when paired with a eurorack system.
True 4 voice poly would be way more straightforward, as of now it can be done with some external midi to cv conversion

My favorite thing about KZbin is how i have so many people saying, "I'm buying the Matriarch, i'm selling it, i bought it again." I think that just proves it's special. Been that way for a couple years now.. but i absolutely love mine. I'm in a weird musical place where i don't have a genre, and it's been nice to just sit down with it and enjoy it for what it is every day... ignoring tons of other more expensive gear.

I think the Matriarch makes a lot more sense if you stop trying to make it a Moog One and think of it as a super beefed-up 2020s Minimoog: a mono synth with 4 VCOs in a couple of filters that could do stereo (but BPF is more fun), and there's a delay there too. It gives you modular capabilities, but I think it shines more as a classic mono synth, unpatched.

It’ll be a modern classic and is such a fascinating and unique device, especially since I want to get a eurorack case in the future. There are some pieces of gear that should never be let go of, for me the Matriarch is one of those. It is my desert island synth, if I also had electricity. While it does take some study and work, it is an instrument that I have been able to get more out of than any other synth. To me the matriach is on level with a high end, Gibson or custom fender electric guitar or a saxophone or even a Moog model D. it’s better than a model D for what I want. I do get it though it has no presets and you can’t exactly save where you where, same as an analog guitar peddle board.

That's a fantastic sounding synth! Damn. I went DAWless two years ago and have a nice little collection of noise-makers. Then, two weeks ago, I picked up the SP404MK2. If I'd been savy to the SP back then, I would have saved a LOT of money. But at least I have plenty of sound sources to sample. But I could have gotten by with only one or two monos and maybe one poly. Or just bought one Moog. Oh, well...first-world problem.

Mine is currently put away in its box awaiting for some one to buy it. I like it, I do. And I've been through the 'should I sell it, or should I keep it' routine more times than any other synth I have had. In the end though, I think it will be going for pretty much the same reasons as you mentioned. BTW: the VCOs are pretty much based on the Moog Voyager with more traditional circuits for the waveshapers.

I'm as newb as one can be. I played some guitar from age 12 and can't read music but can hear and remember enough to repeat and expound.. If that makes sense, I was also (young) into playing with keys and we owned a honkytonk piano growing up. Friends owned pianos. I don't think I ever owned a "keyboard" Casio or whatever but friends had em and I remember playing with them and those (cheapos) in retail stores lol. I like the sounds and the tweaks. I studied and learned a bit. So....way ahead and lately....like 35 years later, I almost bought a Grandmother. My goal was to learn and maybe it was a good idea that I *didn't because I found a Modal Cobalt8 for much, much less cost and while I love the analog sound, I am not there yet enough to wrap my head. Half the cost and much easier for me to get into is this cool Cobalt ......and I'm ok with growing into this hobby. I have other gear but irrelevant here and maybe my entire reply is irrelevant but it's nice to see your understanding and how you make decisions on keeping a tool or letting it go. /cheers. Thanks for sharing and even though you may trade it out, I've learned so much and loved the sounds.

i know it's a matter of personal taste, but the oscillators sound much better if you don't turn them all the way up in the mixer. they are warmer and fuller. if you go past 12:00, they start to clip. its a cool effect but if you do it all the time it becomes fatiguing. also, the main reason for the pitch mod assign is to allow you to modulate the oscillators in sync mode without effecting the base pitch.

Great video as always, Jorb. Really appreciate these longform ones with the thought and depth you provide. I have had my Grandmother for almost a year now and love it. I have been tempted to upgrade to a Matriarch by thinking of it as a GM with more bells and whistles, but honestly, though they share a lot of DNA they are pretty different machines. I think I'll stick with the GM as an immediate and easy to use mono with a lot of tricks up it's sleeve. The other thing I have noticed having recorded with the GM is that it takes up so much space in a mix, cause it thicc. You have to be very deliberate with arrangements and eqing to get it to not overwhelm a song (unless you want that). I imagine that a four osc paraphonic version of that would be even more difficult to get settle in to a full band type mix...

In theory it’s a great synth but in the end I realized it was too much of a novelty release for me. If this synth was made more like a Moog version of the DSI Pro 2 with an internal mod matrix, patch memory, etc I would have really loved it. As it is I find it a novelty release used to push the small, cheaply made, overpriced semi modular stuff that came next. Modern features with optional cv/gate jacks would have been nice. I think this was so close to being so great but every time I played it I was more annoyed than anything. If I spend an hour making some crazy sound, I want to be able to save it. Every time I try modular I walk away feeling like I wasted a ton of time. I’ve been making so many One patches every single day. Infinite storage and a mod matrix is so wonderful.
@jonathanosborn4800

The Moog One proves Moog can make a super modulation analog synth. But I don't think they can make heavy modulation matrix synths at the price point that DSI could. I know every keyboardist equipment piece is unique, and theres tradeoffs, but I'd love more lush synths with modulation, instead of picking a synth that has one or the other. The PRO2 hits the mark, as does the 3, Matrixbrute, etc. Moog should make another followup to the 37, I know they had the subsequent CV, but its been years, the PRO3 really really competes with the sub 37.

I love my Matriarch for having weird sounds, but it is useless if you want a specific sound. It is very hard to get the same sound twice. And it is almost impossible to get a specific sound, like a piano or a violin. If you recorded a song with the Matriarch, good luck getting again to play in a concert. But i still love it, because I havs 2 Yamahas and 2 Roland's.

I have sold mine because first of all it connot save presets, it collects dust, I did not like cv connections at the back and tuning knob at the back, plastic keyboard and cheap-ish plastic everywhere, limited amount of waveforms and oscilator ranges, signal flow around the delay, VCA ''module'' is stripped as hell...why one LFO? useless sequencer (I can use a daw as a sequencer) ...generally cool synth but made in China and who was designing these CV connections made it quite limited...for example mixer can have CV modulation or ADSR as well...each parameter could have CV in but does not...oww...and delay is cool but if it could go down to 0ms it would be A LOT more useful. Very expensive with only 4 voices...6 would be A LOT more useful....

It's not made in China, it's made in the US. Some parts come from China, but this is true for almost every single product in existence. Moog still handbuilds all their synths in the US.

Sounds like I gotta buy another Matriarch so the sold/unsold Matriarch world stays in equilibrium. Great video! I love the Matriarch but I feel you regarding the esoteric key combos to access global settings. The appeal of the synth is the immediacy of operating it without menus, but when you have to dig into the global settings, you really start wishing it had a screen. Hopefully someday, some company will find the perfect balance between immediate sonic exploration and widespread accessible functionality.

I'll never understand people complaining about how long it takes to create a certain patch or sound. When you create a piece of music and ideally document it some way, it potentially could be around until the end of time. How long it took you to come up with a sound is irrelevant to me.

The most interesting thing on this, is these videos will make people buy the Matriarch not sell it. I'm not really sure another synth actually sounds like it. Pretty different and quirky and some new synths lack a lot of character. it's also not just a reissue of something old which is welcome in the synth world too

@@JorbLovesGear haha, hopefully: 1. They'll look at how Sequential and Oberheim are pricing their synths and price accordingly, 2. They see you as a good influencer and spot you one to review. Thanks for this video btw, it made me hope the new Moog synth is a Matriarch with patch saving and 8 note polyphonic for $4-5k. That would be an insta-buy.

I have a grandmother which i think is enough for me after years of contemplating selling it for a matriarch. I also have a prologue 16 voice, and though i can gripe about the lack of a real mod matrix and just one LFO, it's so satisfying to have a synth who's baseline sound character is "easy, nice and usable." These moogs have to be tweaked so goddamn much. It's nice for a full afternoon of tinkering but it's a chore

I haven't tried the Matriarch but I did have the Grandmother for a while, and... yeah. Sold it, kept my old Rogue, which does the things it does much more readily and with zero faff. I've had and sold a bunch of great sounding synths that I just couldn't be arsed to navigate. Life is short. If you can do the things you want with simpler gear, go for it. Seems common now though, this idea of putting functionality behind either obscure shift presses or buried menus that change with every OS update.

This is an excellent review and I appreciate hearing the peculiarities you like and do not like. However, complaining that a paraphonic synth isn't polyphonic seems a bit unfair. It does what it says it does. Also, chipping the paint on video makes this particular Matriarch famous and therefore worth *more* money.

In terms of play modes it's comparable to Vermona Perfourmer and, ironically, the loathed and limited but very cool sounding Akai Timbre Wolf. Grandmother and Matriarch are relatively affordable and easy to understand by just looking at the panel which is also really cool. Nice bulky size for the cavemen among us too.

I really do like the Matriarch. But the constant thing I keep running in with mine is how hard it is to get a soft and sweet sound out of it. I feel like no matter what you do, you'll always get a harsh, white noisy patch no matter what you do. I'm thinking about selling it just for that reason alone. I feel like synth this much should be able to do both.
