I am super excited about the concept of the flip phone of the smartphone era, but like so many others (with you included, it seems) I can't bring myself to own 1 for a long term basis. Maybe if the battery was better, like a graphene battery. Or if the screen wasn't so easy to scratch. (I love the idea of having a star trek TNG tricorder skin.) Still maybe when the flip 9 or 10 comes out the main kinks would finally be worked out, until then I'll stick with a glass brick. Thank you for making the video. I appreciate the pro/con part, as well as the reasons for giving it back.

3 big issues for me and why I returned mine. Battery life terrible as mentioned here. Cameras weren't very good, particularly in low light. The biggest issue for me even beyond that was after a while, you start to realise how useless the cover screen is. It's still too small to read notifications, the implementation of it requires alot of work and it requires far greater utility to make the whole concept worthwhile. Why can't the screen be big enough to quickly read an email, check where I am on maps or browse through a playlist without opening a phone?

I got mine for my birthday and I'm loving it a lot. I'm a big music listener so having the ability to control my music without having to open my phone is a big plus for me. Returning for battery reasons is fair. Returning because of the mic and basically judging the whole line up is mostly due to your bias/inherent fear of reliability in a new form factor. If your S21's mic stopped working, you wouldn't say all S21s are not ready for prime time. You aren't sure if it's a mic issue, connection issue, some other issue. The mic issue allowed a clear reason to cut your losses and leave. Which is fine. We all have our limits. Thanks for the videos and reviews!

My wife, I, and multiples of my friends have the new folding form factor phone from Samsung and have not had any issues. Clearly you have a defective microphone and clearly you do not understand how literally all of samsung phones have a daughter-board, separate from the mainboard, that houses the bottom microphone. The non folding form factor phones usually have just as many fpc cables connecting the daughter-board to the main board as the folding form factors. Very poor reasoning to make a leave from the Flip3 and should not be broadcasted by a nonbiased reviewer as a reason to leave.

I REALLY like the outer display on the phone. Hopefully it's something that Samsung tweaks on and implements on more phones, even it they don't fold. If I don't want to be bothered at all by my phone, I usually place it face down. Kind of the same theory of folding this phone closed. It would be pretty cool to have on the back of the phone for the same reasons as being on the outside of the folded phone. Just my 2 cents. Thank you for the re-review after a month of use. It looks like I'll be keeping my S21 Ultra after all. Especially after having the great battery life that I've gotten accustomed to.

I have to say, I have found the Galaxy Z Flip 3 a very pleasant surprise. I had originally purchased the Galaxy Flip when it was launched, and my main challenge was the size of the phone and the weight. I have been looking for a more pocketable device. I have been an Apple user prior and after the failure with the Galaxy Flip, I switched to the Apple XR. Although the XR was a good device, I wasn't happy with the size. I considered the iPhone 12 mini but there were numerous complaints on the battery life. That brought me to the Z Flip 3. I've had it for 2 months now and I have to say, it's been amazing. No regrets on my part. The larger outer screen is a welcome advantage when you want to have a quick glance of your notifications or key apps. The hinge is firmer and feels more solid overall.

I bought mine on pre-order, received it on August 19th and it's been my only phone since. I absolutely love it but acknowledge the very real compromises in over all durability and battery life. For me, I'm not a heavy screen-on time user and often find myself using the cover display so I easily make it from 7am to 11pm on a single charge. I really appreciate the smaller form factor when folded also because I want this size display without carrying a giant rectangle in my pocket all the time. This is about the thickness of a deck of cards and just a bit wider... it's really nice. I definitely think this device isn't for everyone, but it's certainly for me!

I have been using as well the Z Flip 3 for a month now. My biggest concern was the battery life, which at the beginning looked pretty terrible and also the phone used to heat up excessively. After a week or so, however, battery life noticeably improved (I don't know if Samsung has implemented some kind of adaptive AI based on my typical usage) and even more so if I limit the refresh at 60Hz (I was excited about switching from 60 to 120 but eventually did not notice that big difference). Basically, with a moderate use, it now lasts about 12-14 hrs which is pretty decent. Biggest drawback for me are the cameras (no zoom, did not notice also any significant improvement from my old S10e) but I am in love with the form factor. I watched this video in laptop mode and it is just so much convenient! P.S.: returning the phone for a mic malfunctioning does not seem very reasonable, misfirtunate and annoying for sure but not a defect that could be generalized

The SD888 has been a dog and one of its issues is inconsistency. Two people can have the exact same phone and get different results, so I can believe both of your examples and I can only hope Samsung fabs are better for the new Exynos and Snapdragon. I feel if you get a good one and get one of the great deals ($999 is way too much) then you can have a good year or two. In the UK, Samsung is giving £200 extra off plus a £250 Galaxy Watch so you can get the Flip3 for around £500 which I feel it specs align to. I could not possibly argue that at that price for the right person that is a good call!

I like your videos and I respect your reasons to return it. It's your phone, it's your choice. I, like everyone else (you included) already know that the zflip 3 has a mediocre battery so I was really interested to hear, something new or intriguing on why you are returning it. 1. You know, deep down, that the problem you are having with the microphone is just an anomaly with your unit only. 2. At this point, I think this is no longer a "new tech". It's the 3rd iteration. This phone is IPx8, it has come a long way. 3. Durability for this phone should be at the screen area (which is always folded and protected) and the lack of dust certification (still haven't seen anyone that had a dust-damaged zflip). Saying that both halves may not be communicating well is preposterous. Even desktops and keyboards can communicate and function as one. Is this phone perfect?, NO but even the upcoming S22 ultra will not be perfect. The iPhone 13 will not be perfect either.

I am loving mine. I also find that the battery is good. This is because the added need to open the phone plus the cover screen means I don't open it so much. I now do most stuff at work on my mac instead of phone, and my phone is mostly when I am out and about. Even music, I don't need the main monitor open. I charge my phone in the evening and use it to watch movies and listen to music for about an hour on the train. I have it set to always-on display except between 11pm and 6am. I leave it off a charger at night and only use around 5 to 10 percent of the battery while sleeping which is far better than my note 9 was. About one-handed use, it is easy to flip it open. When you take it out of your pocket you insert the tip of your pinky between the two halves then it flips open easily. Though I usually open it when I am sitting so it is no hassle to use two hands. The only thing your video has caused concern for me is about the problem you had with the mic. Hopefully it was only yours and not every phone. Thanks for sharing. Great content.

Battery is kind of bad and the microphone issue is a major flaw.... but besides that, I have not seen anyone come up with a prime reason to not get the phone. It's new tech and something like being lazy and not wanting to charge a phone with new tech is not really a turn away unless someone is contemplating another option or NEEDS to worry about battery life. Nowadays, from what I've seen --most people carry a charger/portable charger anyways. There are ways to extend your battery life as well, you can get a good 8 - 10 hours of battery life with moderate use and managing your phone's settings as well (brightness + battery saving mode;) I don't know, I don't get new phones very often and this has been an upgrade from my LG V60. I would say the flip has it's imperfections, but what phone doesn't? in a market where most if not all phones are pretty much identical in specs and design, I look for anything that'll be innovative.

When I close fold the screen the mic mutes, the moment I unfold it completely it starts the static again. Glad to know I'm not alone on this (sorry about the phone Btw lol) Edit: mic died, I contacted Samsung Customer Support and they offered me a free replacement very fast, guess they are expecting this problem to happen a lot lol

I've had mine for a couple weeks now and I genuinely like it. The battery life does suck, but I'm a person that plugs it in to my car every time I drive somewhere (in Texas that's a lot) and have been treating it like my watch, where I plug it in whenever I'm showering or something and don't need it, so it hasn't really stressed me out yet. I have decided to keep it even though I am not as enamored with it as I wanted to be, but I will probably be going back and forth between it, my iPhone, and my Note based on what I need or want to use at any given time.

Yes, you soon get use to topping your battery up, and although a bigger batter is preferable, it is not a deal breaker for many of us that are always close to a charging mechanism. Like you I can top up in my car as that is where I work from, so it is no problem. My issue is the functionality and that opening and closing to check an endless stream of messages soon becomes less cool and more a pain, but that is my workload.

no problems with the mic or hands free use on my unit. yes, battery life is comparatively shorter to larger phones such as the ultra, but for people who choose to purchase this phone, they do so for the pros it offers & if a shorter battery life is the trade off, it's well worth this minor compromise.

In my opinion phone companies should release a new phone every 2 years because if we really look into it they don't change much from one year to the next. I'm still using my s20 and it's an amazing phone I think it's better than the s21. It'd be also good for the environment.

I get a feeling most people have the wrong idea of the "non-existant" dust resistant rating. If water can't get inside, dust definitely can't get inside as they are much much much bigger particles. I believe they leave out the dust resistant rating more because dust/sand can easily scratch the plastic inside screen, not because whether it can get inside or not. And when you have your phone most of the time in your pockets, scratching the screen shouldn't be too much of an issue. Personally, I've skipped the fold 1 and 2 but when I heard the 3rd gen has water resistance, I jumped on the fold 3 right when it came out and so far, I am very satisfied with the durability.

I love my Z Flip 3! Being able to fold it is huge for me, because regular smart phones don't fit well in smaller purses like wristlets. If my clothes don't have pockets I can put it in my bra. My right arm is in a sling and I'm not bothered opening/closing the device ( can close it one handed). I work from home so I'm always close to a power source . Plus, I turned off features that use more power. That's wild that the mic stopped working for your phone! I'm willing to roll the dice on mine, so far, so good. Thanks for sharing! ❤

I got my flip 3 because I couldn't stand the Samsung S21 and I got a good price like everyone else for a trade-in. I think any gadget head in general knows that this is still a new technology. And with each new release per year there's new things that will be introduced that may not function well or as intended or not at all. As time goes on your future introductions will become less and less and the phone will become more stable. That's just how it goes. I may have wanted to wait another year before buying this, but like I said didn't like the S21 and because it was in its third year I figured I might as well take the plunge and try to get some kind of fulfillment out of my phone. One thing I definitely like about the phone is the narrowness is less stressful on my hand that maybe I have a little carpal tunnel. The compactness of the phone when closed I've noticed makes it less likely for me to drop the phone if I'm holding it for a period of time such as when I walk the dog and I have no pockets. In contrast with regular phones I can never take them on my walks because of fear that it may fall and break or scratch the screen which it has happened. I already dropped the flip phone twice as dropping things is what I unintentionally do because my thoughts tend to be occupied with something else & I forget things are in my hand. Each time I dropped it I've worried how will this thing break. At the same time I realized it's a new gadget and as such it's at a greater risk of breaking. I'm simply trying to say I took the risk knowing that as a new gadget there's going to be things that may malfunction or not work at all. I have the Samsung bwarranty as well as the extended warranty from another plan I have. I'm also ready to trade it in in a subsequent year if I'm completely dissatisfied with it for one reason or another Thanks for the heads-up about the microphone and that sounds terrible. And yeah I could see the wear-and-tear potentially causing the shock to the microphone and breaking it. Actually I just learned you can test the microphone using the Samsung members app. Go to the bottom of the app and select 'get help'. On the next page pops up it says Diagnostics and you choose which feature you're going to test. It does I nfact test both microphone separately.

You had a phone with a defect, it doesn't mean that you need to "question the durability of the connection between both halves" it's just a defect which is covered under warranty. I had the flip 2 5G for over a year and have now had this phone for over 2 months now, no issues whatsoever. No problems with the battery either, I guess if you spend all day on youtube watching videos then you may drain the battery , but for normal use, even heavy use including watching videos here and there and social media, you don't need a charger at all, I use the phone a lot and have never needed to charge it until the end of the day.

I really like your videos Mike, but I don't understand this one. For the most part it is valuable information, but in the end... you returned it because of the microphone and don't want it back because you think it hints to a bigger flaw? This is the third generation, not a prototype. I think someone would have discovered it by now if the two sides of the phone were prone to communication issues. And this title... sorry normally I think your videos are so great because they are so balanced and honest but this one feels like you needed an excuse to damage the reputation of the flip 3 and I really don't understand why. It's ok if it is just not the phone for you, and I can image that e.g. the battery life is very important for you with what you do, but this microphone story and this attention seeking title I really don't understand. I am sad with every comment here when someone says they are now not buying it because of this. This really is a non issue. That there are some products in a line that have flaws like this with the microphone is totaly normal and in my humble opinion not hinting to anything other than that you had the bad luck of getting the one in the million with the defect.

I don't think you had enough time with it. The microphone is a hardware failure that is unlikley caused from flipping it too much. I've had mine for 4 months and I flip it around 10 times a day, I overall enjoy the quality of this phone (Z3). Also from my experience, the battery does fall fast but on days I dont use it hardly at all, I still have about 70% at the end of the day.

I love the push Samsung is giving to these designs. They definitely look like the next big thing. BUT... right now, every time I see Flip 3 it reminds me ipod mini. Do you remember that? That tiny screen on the top of a thin long aluminium body... Well, the day apple released ipod touch (a full screen device), ipod mini looked obsolete in a second. Now, when I randomly find one in a drawer I smile thinking "I can't believe this was huge back the days". It really was, but the point is: this happened an age ago, I can't but think that the tiny little screen that the Flip 3 has on the outside is an already obsolete tech. Next year, when closed, at least one side of the outer shell will be entirely a beautiful borderless square screen. We know that. It will happen, in one year, or two. Because THAT is a final design. Have a nice day everyone (... and removing the crease on the inside screen is another obvious and mandatory improvement).

That sounds like an anomaly tbh. Battery life could be an issue because it’s so small and the display is still 120hz (non-LPTO) and it’s got a Snapdragon 888, plus lots of reviews say the same, but the microphone issue might just be something you have. You can find these defects in all types of smartphones. I even had to take an iPhone 12 back once because the gap between the display and the side-frame was wide enough for grit and debris to get into (they swapped it out immediately for a new phone to their credit) but yeah I don’t think this is an issue specific to the Z Flip 3.

I've had my flip for just a month and no issues. Mic works fine for making calls. Only one con for me has been the battery. But I knew it going in. I traded my iPhone 12 pro max for it. Dont get me wrong. Apple is a good brand. But phones every year look the same with tiny upgrades. I honestly didnt see huge physical differences between 12 and 13. Shrug. I wanted something different and thats what I got. And I'm happy. This phone's not for everyone.

I have been with iPhone for a long time. Should I think about switching to a zflip?

You want Dex, great battery life, and you're anticipating durability issues. Begs the question: why did you buy the phone in the first place? Didn't do your homework.

LOVE mine, phone is AWESOME! I am fortunate enough to constantly swap my Samsung phones. And this baby is such a joy to use and the flipping never gets old! Mind you folks, I am not one that cares much about the camera. It doesn't compare to the camera I had on my S21 Ultra, but again a camera isn't at the top of my list.

The volume buttons also switched when closed on the Flip 5G but I had to learn that by experience

Going to comment on the one handed section you mentioned here about being disabled or hand problem's. I have a badly damaged right hand and I found this phone easier to use than my s20. So I would say if you don't know then don't comment. But I like the phone not had any issues at all tbh it's been a better experience than most my candy bar phones.

I can set up my Flip 3 in split-screen in landscape. Left side is Netflix. Right side is a GameCube game. While Razr 5G can play this video when closed. A lame iPhone 13 Pro can't do any of this.

I just use my laptop or tablet with a much bigger display and enjoy a user experience at the next level! Splitting a small device like this with two apps seems like a horrible option, why on earth would you want to do that? Buy a cheaper phone and a tablet and enjoy.

Really addicted to this unusual form factor of Z flip 1 , don't think I will ever go back to the regular phones now, will wait for Z flip 4 to upgrade..

Great video. I also had my flip for a month and am sending it back. The battery life was shockingly bad. Plus I dont know if you experienced this but mine constantly got really hot. Especially when charging. So when it would get low I would use my samsung wireless charger on my desk to top it up and it would just never fill past 50% because it would be to warm to charge. Really disappointing as I loved the form factor. Looking forward to the flip4

Oh HI, not an expert, but maybe that cuz of the 120 hertz? I heard that the software? Or the battery? Isn't made for thick or constant overwhelming usage, so when they lowered the hertz it got fine.

Wireless charging is the most inefficient way of charging any device in existence. If you want full and consistent charge, use the USBC port that is there. With a cord.

You’re right, the fun factor you can’t deny it. But it just loses quickly. The battery works fine for me, cuz it’s my secondary phone. If I bought it as my first, most likely I’m going to sell it. 7/10.

When they have improved the screen durability, battery size, and charge speed for the phone from 15w to 30w minimum, I might be interested to buy one.

@@jamaycey838 i like to see reviewers having an opinion and different perspective around the phone. pretty neat if I want to pick it up when its cheaper.

I have the Flip 3 since the release day. Love it, but the folding thing is more of a gimmick... In practice it's more of a hassle/extra thing you have to do before you really can do what you need or want to do...

This is a normal decision. I think I'm gonna be keeping my flip just because of the form factor. The drawbacks are there but with the words 'Hello Moto' ringing in my head ever since I get a hold of it, letting it go just doesn't quite suit me.
