The day my business died. It's time for a new adventure.
Jacob is weird. A self confessed oddball who continuously takes on projects that most wouldn't go near. Building a tiny house cabin, a dutch barge boat and all manner of wacky bits and bobs. To reiterate, Jacob is weird... but weird is fun.

Being able to change your mind about something and decide that you need move in a different direction is just such an important ability. The montage in this film was just beautiful and I can see why you are a successful film maker. I loved watching you make your gorgeous tiny houses and I’m so happy that you’ve beaten cancer. Good luck with whatever you attempt in the future - I’m sure it will be fabulous.

@@JacobHarrell Maybe if you don't want to totally turn your back on the small house industry you probably would want to restrategize your marketing ? Should you decide to get back into it after taking a break for a while , think about all the RICH people out there who would gladly PAY ALOT of money for a PLAYHOUSE for their kids . It would essentially be a tiny house but would look more magical and possibly more whimsical if they so desire .

When you posted your video of canoeing down the river with some tea and some cake, I was in the midst of a depression that made me feel like nothing had a purpose. There was no point to me, or others, or the world. Watching you canoe for miles, simply for the joy of it, started me back on the road to health and purpose. I’ll never be able to thank you in person for that, but I pray you continue to find joy in mundane things. I’m so grateful that I can again. Thank you.

I’m so grateful you can find joy in mundane things again too. You painted the bleak void of depression so vividly it was almost as if I, too, was back there again. Although I’ve been recovered for a few years now, I always fear feeling that way again. So I’d like you to know, I have taken enormous comfort in reading your comment. To know that others have managed to find their way through the dark tunnel and find their purpose again it greatly inspiring. I know your comment wasn’t intended for me, but it’s made an impact regardless. Thank you. I hope you continue to find your joy and purpose, now and always. ❤

Jacob, you might not remember me but you replied to a comment I left about a year and half ago. I told you that your video transformed my life and gave me the inspiration to build my own home. I saved every penny from that day, and I begin next year still. I had no idea about your cancer. I have a similar genital condition and have an operation 31.08.23. You candour, and transparency has been unlike any other story on KZbin. I'm English too, so I found you relatable, easy to follow and fun to watch. Thanks for changing my life for the better. You genuinely have been my sliding door after a divorce and mid-life crisis. Thanks mate and all the best in your future. Will update you with my documentary of the build, as I edit videos too.

This is sad, but a sign of the times. People can't afford to dream anymore. Not for long anyway. But I wouldn't exactly call this waking up. It's the silent, dark restful sleep after you dream. I've heard said if you settle for this, you only wake up before you die just to see what you've missed. So hopefully he means it when he says he'll keep exploring life.

Where I live, in the U.S., some states allow these, but others do not. Such a wonderful potential alternative for many people! Where I live, in San Diego, CA the zoning for tiny homes is a big no go. Sure, you can make a tiny home, but there is no where practical to put it, unless you want to live on the cheap in a trailer park, where I'm not knocking, but would find living in a bit depressing. The tiny home movement is all about having alternative housing, not the same old. So bummer here now as well! Props to beating cancer, I'm right there with you :)

Planning permission beaurocracy ruins and kills so many amazing ideas. It’s happened to our neighbours next door who put in for permission to replace an ugly flat roofed 60’s monstrosity kitchen extension to their listed building with a fantastic, not off the wall, not ugly, completely in keeping with the houses in the village, matching stone etc. The heritage planning officer said she “didn’t feel it was right’ and wanted them to do a double height extension rather than single story. They now have permission for that BUT now can’t afford to do it at all because it’s 2 stories high, building costs have risen etc. all because of a planning officers feeling. Feelings shouldn’t come into it. It should be because it doesn’t meet criteria not because someone in planning doesn’t feel they like it.

Well I just want to say I’ve really been enjoying this little corner of the internet. This channel has always felt so real and organic, which is refreshing and honestly a little reassuring being in a youtube space where most of the people I subscribe to tend to present a very put-together front. It’s difficult to account for failure, especially while existing in a society in which failure is disavowed as merely a setback. It’s difficult to face the fact that you can work so hard for something, pour such love and energy into it, all with no assurance that it will work out in the end. But at the risk of sounding cliché, I truly believe it’s the process - the journey - that matters most. I truly believe, especially from experience, that failure opens just as many doors as it closes. Aside from building something physically, you built something internally… You learned to overcome new obstacles and proved a level of dedication and skill which is now a scaffolding by which you will reach new goals and dreams. I wish you the very best in your future endeavors Jacob, and I can’t wait to see the places you’ll go!

I have been intrigued by tiny homes for many years now, but the big problem is that where housing is incredibly expensive and a tiny house would be a real find, tiny houses aren't welcome; and in the countryside where they are welcome, there's no real need to be so frugal with space. Congratulations on getting planning board approval, that's where most tiny house dreams seem to die, and your dream got past that. Knowing when to pull the plug on a business that isn't working out is a real skill you share with my brother and his antiques business. He saw the diminishing returns and chose to close before he went broke. Too many entrepreneurs lack that skill, pumping everything they have into a lost cause like my cousin who opened a restaurant and bar and did not give up until he ran thru all his savings, and his house, and was flat broke when the police finally shut him down because too many rowdies had taken a liking to the place.

Jacob what a wonderful charming man you are. I stumbled across your hot tub bath video, sitting on my laptop out at an old converted farm house in the middle of nowhere Sweden where I have recently emigrated to, so I can be with my partner, it's minus 30 outside right now and we are surrounded by snow. I came for a little inspiration in designing my hot tub (with respect your bath idea, whilst great concept was not it) and instead I got a life lesson about being authentic, courageous and being grateful. Thanks young man, you are going to do great at anything you put your mind to and although I only watched two videos... I hope you made a tidy profit selling your land on with planning, I would easily argue your little cottage was a huge success and I wish you your partner and your dog a beautiful life together. You singlehandedly convinced me to never move to England. 2 years to get a planning permission is just nuts! OTOH, I'm sure we have parts of the USA that is probably way worse! We have insurance companies who won't insure geodesic domes, because they aren't a old school traditional home, and we have lenders who won't lend money to buy a geodesic dome for the same reason. They don't care that the home is more likely to survive tornadoes and cost them less money. Best wishes!

Sorry to hear about your operation. Medical issues change everything. I had emergency surgery, in May, for a bowel obstruction. I was on my way to camp host in Idaho for the summer but the surgery changed everything. I ended up with a colostomy, to save my life. The good news is I am having the colostomy reversed in November and have been able to keep weight on. But it also means living in an RV is horrible and no longer fun. But it means I'm stuck, too. After my second surgery, in November, I want to spend another winter in Texas, but I will have to see.

You've given me hope that the world isn't in such bad shape after all. We need more positive videos like yours that are just as infectious yours.

I remember watching you’re building the tiny house. It was very beginning of the pandemic and was wondering what’s going to happen and worried, and then bumped into the small fairy tale house building that made me feel better. Things are supposed to be changing. The tiny house maybe would gone but memory stays with you the whole life. Good luck on your next eras.

So many business start ups flop, but then, with better planning, deep thinking, and some business lessons learned, part 2 or even part 3 , it comes together. Have another go after settling in your new place. And well done on beating the C! 💪🏼 🎉

Life is all about change. I was content living in my mobile home for the past 30 years. Now I'm going to have to move. Not right away but within a couple of years. It's going to take some time to get rid of stuff and pack and I have no idea where I'm going to go. I'm glad that you have a full time job and a home to live in. Best of luck to you and your wife.

This was one of the first few channels I subscribed to, I so hope I see you before it’s my time. I’m 71 not very fit and feel quite overcome that it’s taken you all that time to get planning permission that you’ve really had to move on so much. It’s sad all round for me, too many losses lately to comprehend. Hope to see you again Stephanie UK.

Hi Stephanie. I'm sorry to hear you have had losses lately. Through the building process and reading all these comments I've learnt to celebrate what I went through, yes some tough things but many more brilliant things. And who knows, perhaps both of us have better adventures to come in the future ❤
