I introduced my children to the idea of productive entertainment. I suggested that people often spent a lot of money trying to find activities to fill their leisure hours. I suggested instead they find hobbies they enjoyed that might also provide additional benefits such as saving money or improving their health/fitness. All of my kids are now very good cooks and would rather prepare their own food than buy it because they find cooking is productive entertainment. One of my sons holds elaborate dinner parties. They ride their bicycle rather than drive to improve their fitness and save a little money. They often make gifts or things they need rather than buying them. They get a great deal of satisfaction by doing things for themselves.

I'm neurodivergent and I was slow with learning to speak and expressing myself with words - reading improved my language so much and gave me confidence in school. I found inexpensive hobbies through reading including origami, researching greek mythology, marine animals, finance. The only bummer was that when I entered high school, I was short on reading time because of all the assignments, test and exam preparation etc.

I can identify with friends and family and a deck of cards. My wife was the 2nd oldest of her 7 brothers and sisters (two boys, six girls). Back in the 70's and 80's we all spent many weekends at her parents country home and shared many meals, card games and evenings on the back porch in every season but winter. I was once asked if I had ever consulted a psychiatrist when I was going thru the hiring process as a state corrections officer. I explained to the interviewer about our time spend with my wife's extended family on the back porch and told her my mother-in-law and father-in-law were great at listening and helping us young families generally work thru problems. And oh do I miss the penny ante (a .25 cent limit raise) poker games that filled many a Saturday or Sunday evening around the kitchen table. At 74 years of age, more than a few are gone now and I look back on those years of raising our kids in the 70's and 80's and 90's as the best years of our lives.

Awesome video Bea! Yeah, living frugal is literally the greatest life hack there is. I became almost financially independent at the age of 30 here in Sweden. During my 20's I went to university, got a job within IT and saved up enough money to buy a 21sqm studio apartment (at the age of 30). Now I'm 42 years old. I spend ~170EUR per month on bills, 130EUR on food (vegan) and ~150EUR on transportation and leisure. That's a total of 450EUR... I do consultancy work from my own IT company, resulting in an out-of-pocket income of ~40-60EUR per hour. So I often need to work about 10 hours per month to sustain my lifestyle... Sure, I'm very lucky to have a well paid job, but to be honest, I could manage just fine on minimum wage as well. It would just mean that I need to work 25-30hours per month instead. Ultimately, by treading lightly here on earth I am able to find peace and happiness. Being frugal let me live a life without stress or worry. It allows me to be present and available those I love. And I have time to enjoy life instead of being stuck in the rat race of capitalism.

To save on drying clothes and cooking cheap meals for one. I'm a recovering shopaholic so I'm also currently de-cluttering a lot of stuff.

I like that you said you do occasionally eat out because it gives you joy. So many videos I’ve seen on frugal living make it sound as if you must eat every meal at home. They make it sound like a restaurant meal is the ultimate sin.

Plan purchases up front, make a list and stick to it. Look for good deals for stuff that are on your 'standard list'. Reduce the number of visits to the grocery store to a minimum a month, that will also reduce the spending on impulse buys, of stuff one do not actually need

Ok, I sympathize with that - but you live in a real nice location with an expensive parquet floor, you look young an healthy with very good teeth and so on. Meaning: If have a certain amount of prosperity - "frugal" is easy and sounds like a lifestyle-word for the children of the upper middleclass ; ) (if I'm wrong, I apologize, but you already own a lot of good things)

those are conveniences. And convenience is a luxury. It's only when it makes financial sense to buy them where its worth it. It has to save you time and money. Not only time, because then it becomes a problem.

I see it differently. Shopping, cleaning, cooking etc grounds you. It helps you to appreciate those who do that for their living or when someone does it for you. I find as I get older I have plenty of time to do the chores plus everything else.

It’s incredibly liberating being frugal. Makes you realise how happy, comfortable and healthy you can be spending a minimal amount of money and having less useless stuff in the house and in your life. It also reinforces your individuality, sod what everyone else thinks, do your own thing, be at peace with your own thoughts and decision making. I’m more in the category of beyond frugal than frugal. $40 per week on groceries is luxury, I spend less than £30 per month on ingredients for my meals.

I love your video and the message contained within. This basically describes the journey I'm on since about a year. Ways to go, but minimalism frees the mind. I wonder how other people perceive owning things - to me I can physically feel the burden of every single item I own - even if it's digital in nature. This occupies my mind and this is not a great feeling I can tell you that much. Even if you don't feel it as intensely or conciously as I do, I bet subconsiously it's occupying your mind as well. So I made it my purpose to get rid of everything that burdens my mind. Like spending money on things I don't necessarily need or that don't improve my overall wellbeing in some significant way. Or spending more money than I have to on the things that I do need. I also visit Portugal regularly and plan to move there some time in the near future. Maybe we cross paths some day, and can exchange further about our frugality. :D Obrigado por este vídeo e pelas suas ideias!

Yeah I have a similar lifestyle, but do have a car as I’m Canadian and we have big distances and nice nature, but that is considered travel…. I also spend almost exactly 60$ Canadian a week on groceries, around 250$ a month, about 160 Eu, and eat very well. I buy used and cheap, or high quality new sometimes to last years🎉
@Eda-Gunes15 күн бұрын
I've also come to understand this right after 1 year of graduating and working full-time and spending all that money on the things I had long wanted. With that money, I set up my new home, bought furniture and some new clothes, also of course travelled a lot. Could I have done these for cheaper? Yes, but I also value quality and I won't be buying anything new until they stop functioning. So I guess it also depends on at what stage you're in your life. Now, I definitely wanna try the no-buy month :)

2 helpful things I tell myself to avoid buying so much stuff are: 1. Will this allow me to do something valuable I can't already do or is it just a luxury upgrade? 2. Will I use it for sure? (Even better: will I use it straight away?)

@lastelinl872416 күн бұрын
A agree with everything she said, but it is also good to remember that spending is the fuel of economy. By buying stuff you give the opportunity to earn this money to: 1. the one who makes the product, 2. the one who supplies the first one with raw materials, 3 the one who ships it to your location, 3. to the shop clerk who sells it to you 4. to his manager, 5. to the person who will be some years later paid to recycle it... and many more. When you are spending money you are not destroying it, nor wasting it. You are simply putting it back into circulation. Every cent you spend is a cent somebody else earns. If you can afford to spend it while giving somebody else chance to earn money which he or she may need to put food on the table, there is nothing wrong about it. If everybody turned strictly frugal overnight and lets say stopped eating out, most of restaurants would go bankrupt, those waiters, cooks, cleaners, managers... would lose their jobs. Without a job they would have to cut their expenses which would inevitably lead to other people in other professions loosing their jobs. It would be a chain reaction. So the key is to find a balance, don't go crazy on spending, always keep some reserve, don't spend money on things you don't need knowing you will have problems to cover your rent or anything similar. Don't spend too much if it means you will have to work crazy overtimes and it will take its toll on your family life. Just common sense stuff... What I see as the problem is not so much spending as the uneven distribution of income in society. Rich getting more rich, poor getting more poor. And that is something you cannot influence directly. Your political representatives can influence that, so use your brain next time and please don't elect corrupt, stupid idiots to the leadership of your country, as it happened in 90% of EU countries.
@assezzen19411 күн бұрын
I agree with your idea of making money circulate as a contribution to the economy and general abundance. However, a large part of the economy is unnecessary / wasteful / environmentally damaging or socially problematic. So widespread minimalism could correct that. It's alright if people who exploit animals go bankrupt (I'm vegan). Or if nail salons go bankrupt (i'm anti nail polish as I find that it's a unnecessary pollution). It's alright if plastic wrapping companies go bankrupt... The same goes for most restaurants (they serve animal flesh and unhealthy non organic food ridden with pesticides, factory processed food and they typically underpay the employees anyway while being expensive for customers). As for the uneven distribution of income and possessions, it's natural. Most people go through life with a poverty mindset, spend all their income and then some, and remain economic slaves, consuming value. People with a wealth mindset live below their means (balance or sobriety or minimalism), save money, invest, create value. So, eventually money always comes back into the pocket of those who treat it well and serve the world... Artificial redistribution is an unnatural mechanism that has both positive and negative consequences (really helping some people to improve their lives vs entitlement, dependence, mediocrity). I think it does more harm than good, though. In France, we have among the highest taxes in the world. The productive entrepreneurs and the rich are getting away... Even if you vote for "good" politician, the EU will intervene. Cf the recent re-vote in Romania as the initial result wasn't politically correct...

My father use to tell me..."part of the joy of owning something is the effort it takes to acquire it." Saving money month after month, planning for this new item etc. If you have endless capital, it removes this joy from getting that item as there was no effort to obtain it. I never understood this until I became wealthy at 37 years old and realized buying things with no planning or struggles ultimately led to less enjoyment from that material item.

Few life hacks about food. Instead of eating bakery products, like buns, wraps, pasta (which has no nutritional value and in the future can cause lot of medical expenses) you can go raw vegan keto diet, which is the most officiant according to my 20 years experience . Raw coleslaw, carrots, courgettes plus natural oils from seeds , oats , buckwheat,greens, some eggs as a protein source. Some food as grains Better to soak 12 hours or more before cooking , it saves a lot of energy, when it’s come to boiling point, take the source pan and wrap with blankets and in half an hour grains, buckwheat, rice are ready and taste amazing.

I regularly have "no-buy" months. Not because I commited to them, but because there was nothing that I needed or wanted and didn't already have. I think that's the most important part. Recognizing that you actually don't need new stuff. It seems some people just keep buying stuff because they are bored or there is always a bigger, more shiny object.
