Why I'm Switching from NIKON to SONY + Why You Should Too!

It's true - I'm switching!!
In this video I compare the differences between Sony and Nikon, and which camera suits you best! I discuss the advantages of both camera brands over the other, and why I have decided to switch from Nikon to Sony.
These are all personal opinions and if I maybe missed a certain fact or you have a different opinion, please feel free to share them below!! :)
The gear I have currently purchased have been the Sony A7C, Sigma 12-24mm and Tamron 28-200mm - with a lot more to come!!
Really excited to test out all these new features and share with you all the experiences and first impressions of the Sony A7C along with the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 and the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6.

A couple years ago I was close to switching to a Sony a7iii. I was shooting nikon for a couple years and already had a collection of lenses. I predominantly shoot landscape and also do some portraits. After doing some research I found the weather sealing and build quality on the a7iii wasn't up to scratch. Seeing that I do lots of seascapes I needed good build quality and weather seal. I ended going with the z6 and it was good enough for what I did. My Z6 has gone through so much punishment with seawater, waterfall spray, heavy rain and still works fine 😅 Now I have the Z7ii and the autofocus has vastly improved with the latest firmware. Obviously not as good as Sony but it's good enough for most things.

Yeah for photography I think the Z6 and Z7 series are amazing!! I could really see myself going back to Nikon once their autofocus catches up! Sure each brand offers something different to each person so I'd agree with it's whatever suits best☺️🙌

Fingers crossed for the AF update in September. Supposed to be a live tracking option from the new Z9 added to the Z6/7II. 🤞

Im hanging in on Nikon to see what the new AF firmware thats being added to the Z6/7II in September. If its half good ill stay with them because I prefer the rear screen on the Z. But if its meh ill go for a C.

All sonyboyz use luts and filters anyway so since when true colours are factor?! I'm almost switching to Sony because I'm tired of waiting Nikon stuff to arrive and even happen... 4 months waiting on 800mmZ, 1 month waiting on the z9... the only thing still keeping me in is that new 800mm as I became a birder

Funny, Just switched to an a7 siii from a z6 and focus was my main issue. not only autofocus but also manual since all the z lenses dont have a linear mf throw. which is super annoying cause u pretty much have to go manual with unreliable af. im really impressed with the a7siii, even on the photo side.

Yeah very true the focus was the main reason to change for me! Great point about the manual focus too☺️ It's so nice with Sony knowing that you're actually going to get shots in focus all the time instead of just hoping the Nikon will catch the subject😆🙌

I'm so sad to say but I'm switching from Sony to Nikon as of today 😭 but Nikon really has lagged, but hope they step it up. I still love them, been shooting nikon for over 13 years but it's time

I've always had Nikon but now I'm getting much more into video, my Nikon Z6ii just can't cut it. Nikon boasted about adding a second CPU compared to the Z6, giving much better AF. The AF is terrible though, it just cannot keep up. You see this said in forums and the same few will criticise and claim that you need to learn how to use the AF properly. Well I do know, but for video it simply does not work well and barely ever tracks subjects. Adding new and faster CPU's isn't the answer as the whole AF system just isn't very good. I could wait for something new from Nikon but how much longer must I wait? I haven't used a Sony camera but I'm itching to buy one. It's a massive change for me though and I'd have to sell all my lenses to have enough money for a Sony camera, then I'll end up with just one lens to start with. I could lose everything. Is it really worth that? I've been mulling this over in my head for over a year now. What if I get a Sony and hate something about it? I do LOVE my Nikon Z6ii, even for video it's fantastic quality WHEN IT WORKS and in the right conditions, even the 8-bit footage is excellent. Apart from the AF, the lack of 10-bit, log and prores is starting to become a real problem with my video work. I've considered an Ninja V but I shouldn't have to add more bulky hardware just to get what the camera should already have. I'd love the Sony FX30, the specs make me drawl! Sorry for the waffle, I'm just talking it out! :)

Sony is best for photography if you are a hobbyist. I sold all my Nikon and bought Sony because with Sony you have tamron, sigma and samyang. You can invest much less if you buy into Sony.

You haven't mentioned the fact that Nikon's Z Mount has vastly superior specs - once they do catch up (and they will!), they will wipe the floor with everyone else. I'm mostly a stills photographer and I too own the D5300, and for landscape photography, autofocus is not that important. The 39 AF points it has are more than enough for the kind of work that I do. Plus I'm the kind of nerd that loves lugging around all of his equipment in his Tenba bag everywhere he goes, so weight and compactness are not really a factor for me. I will be upgrading to the Z system in a couple of years. Yes, it's a gamble, as Nikon has experienced big financial losses, but it's one I'm willing to take.

Totally agree with you!! I'm so excited to see what Nikon release when they do catch up. Exactly sure it depends on what sort of content you're using it for - I needed to change for the autofocus and video but if I was only doing photography I'd stay with Nikon☺️🙌

have to disagree here. im coming from an z6 and just upgraded to an a7s iii. the technology is night and day in regards to speed & quality. i dont think the z mount is that superior, what makes u suggest that? the diameter? pretty much not a big factor since sony can also produce f1.2 or f0.95 lenses, so whats the biggest benefit there? for me, i was tired of waiting for nikon to play catchup, and it seems unlikely that they will advance at the same pace as canon and sony do. sure they'll get to the current state sometime, but by then the other brands will be way ahead again. especially if you do video, the z series is a huge letdown. even the raw recording has disappointing quality. rolling shutter, pixelbinning etc. 2020 and they dont do 4k 60 10bit internal? by 2022 (when the z6 iii hits), canon and sony will be way ahead again. the thing i loved most about my z6 were the colors. but since i use Lightroom for every photo, this became a minor issue. i'd rather spend a bit more time on LR with 10/10 photos in focus than missing 5/10 shots with nikons flawed af system. not hating nikon but just some practical experiences here. hope they'll do better to keep up competition for market innovation.

@@CristuelCasto i agree, on paper that is. you are probably citing some videos you saw or articles you read (cause i have too), but thats mostly theory crafting at this point in time, probably in the next few years to come as well. im with you here, that a bigger diameter is better. but what does this translate to in real life? would you care to elaborate? since sony can make f1.2 glas, what would the flipside be? f1.1/1.0 for nikon? physics dictates the amount of glas that is needed for f1.2 or below. in a world, where everything needs to be more compact, how great is the need for even faster glas? canon rf lenses are great, but very, very heavy to carry around all day on a shoot. their 28-70 f2: sick lens, but super heavy in comparison. plus: have you shot with f1.2 and know how razor-thin the depth of field is? without perfect focus, you are gonna miss probably all photos. in essence, you are arguing something thats very theory and probably applicable in very little scenarios. would you choose way better AF at f1.2 or missing most of your shots at f1.1?

giving you a real life example here: i chose the 35mm f1.4 over the sigma f1.2 version simply because of size. its way easier to carry on a full day of shooting, has better AF (since it has to move way less glas aside from a better motor) and the difference between f1.2 and f1.4 is very little if not unrecognizable when they are not side by side. off your writing, i would assume you are not in the market for multiple $3000+ lenses, so what difference does the diameter make in the next 5 years for you?
