Never thought I'd say this. Never thought I'd think this. Never thought I'd think to say this to you. But stonewashed denim. It ain't all the bad. In fact, it's good. In fact, it's great.
But to be honest. Only this particular pair from 3sixteen. A brand that we know and love from being a raw denim brand. So making a pair of stonewashed jeans might seem like an odd move. So I was wondering, what's going on. So I asked them.

I think it's kind of funny how everything comes full circle. We go from very normal denim, to getting the hearty and starchy so we can get sicker fades, back to a denim similar to the ones we start off with because we want the comfort back. This is not hate to the denim community whatsoever but Its a thought that made me giggle

Great video Matt. Totally reinvented as a first wash guy. Fits better, feels better, wears in better in my humble opinion after one wash than as needed. My latest scores are this and my all-time favourites Acne trucker jacket, Resolute 710’s and Naked and Famous recycled stone blue. Perhaps it’s a throw back to my misspent youth in the late 60’s and early 70’s when we just washed the hell out of everything (I was a Lee guy) to get the desired washed out, faded effect. Thanks again!

I agree with one commenter in that it is interesting how things go full circle. I have worn jeans since the 70s. I always preferred rigid denim (as they were called then). Have I worn rinsed, prewashed, stone washed, distressed, and even acid washed denim? Yes. Mainly because it became impossible to find rigid denim in stores. And there was no internet. Admittedly, growing up with rigid denim influenced me. But I never fully embraced pre- any finished denim. I was excited when the Japanese raw denim took off. And a bit dismayed that several of my favorite brands and stores seem to be moving to rinsed and washed denim jeans over raw. But on the plus side, they forced me to search out new makers of raw denim. Which has been interesting for me. So enjoy you prewash jeans, stonewash jeans. I have been there, done that. And not going back.

I would consider myself a denim head. Nothing I own would be considered low quality by any means, but I love seeing and trying totally different processes than the stereotypical raw, selvedge from Cone or Japan. I think that this is an awesome video and great to see such a major brand trying something this different. As my denim journey has progressed and taste expanded I’ve found that while I love my basic 14.5oz indigo Japanese selvedge and always need a pair or two, I want to try the most unique or different stuff, in cuts that aren’t just slim or skinny. I think that growth is key to success and 3Sixteen nailed it here

Really good video buddy. Another little bit of potentially interesting info - I believe The Real McCoys for the first time this season released a washed jacket and jeans (I picked up both) having not previously sold anything but raw. Why? No idea, I suspect in part it’s actually because of brands like RGT whom have shown you can get really aesthetically pleasing washes which still age through use rather than washes which just look artificial. I for one own the same jeans as the washed pair I purchased in raw and am interested to see how the fades differ, specifically the richness of the indigo.

i appreciate all types of denim. and i'm glad that washed lighter blue denim isn't looked down upon. people always said they prefer the look of older worn-in jeans. and people did things to make it fade faster. thats why they started selling jeans with an already faded look in the first place. and some people just really prefer style over quality? but Raw denim is definitly going to last longer, and the fades will actualy match with your legs. i believe its kinda funny how certain things do look better when they are older instead of new. a friend of mine bought a pair of converse all star sneakers.. and the first thing he did with them is rub a little mud at certain places. because he doesn't want it to look new and he believes it does look better? i believe these sneakers and denim are one of the few things that do look better when they are a couple months older. shouldn't a true denimhead appreciate all denim? even if its cheap and the stitching isn't the best?

My most googled term over the last 4 years has been 'stonewashed selvedge' and up until recently there really weren't many options. Patrik Ervell had a medium and light stonewash that were beautiful, but they were discontinued. Some of the larger retailers like JCrew and Todd Snyder have attempted, Taylor Stitch has some unflattering ones, and then there's the stretchy/fake Kato - like brands. I'm curious to see what the stonewashed CT is like. Overall, I'm super pleased that denim brands are heading in this direction.

316 was my gateway drug to raw denim world. My first triple stitch tee-shirt was their indigo tee. And despite being fully committed to raw denim now. I still consider 316 is the most usable/ user-friendly brand. All the Japanese denim brand hoodie I tried have too small a hood to pull up. 316’s hoodie’s hood is perfectly big. It does feel logical that 316 launches Stonewashed denim.

You can also just try machine washing with bleach (usual amount for a wash load) to get a prewashed look with less risk of bleach damage to the denim. May need to wash more than once depending on what you are looking to achieve. RIT dye at one time made a prewash for denim to achieve that look (have not seen this in many years though). Machine washing will tend to soften your jeans as well. Especially if you have the typical US top loading washer with an agitator. But fabric softener can also be used as well.

I know this will be blasphemy to most but you could literally by a looser cut and just wash your selvedge denim on a regular basis to get them softer and have vintage fades. That being said I like to keep mine rigid and wash when needed though. If I want comfort or flexibility I'll go with something like BDUs, workpants, or cargo pants simply because they're never going to be restrictive to begin with and are both cheap and tough so who cares if they get beat to hell. As far as denim I can just go with standard Levis, Lee, and Wranglers for cheap or even a stretch selvedge and skip the washed look if I want more comfort. Personally I'm not a fan of stone washed or acid washed jeans having had my fill growing up in the late 80s and 90s. Back then in the US you couldn't find dark denim everything had a wash finish and by my late teens in the 2000s it was all that pre-distressed pre-ripped hype which was awful to say the least.

What I don't like about my fading process is the back pocket wallet fades. I consider them ugly, also they are the first to appear and avoid can wear my jeans to the office at the fouth or fifth wear. That problem is inexistent with pre-faded jeans. On the other side, I got some pre-faded Levi's LVC 1955 and you lose all the experience, the fades look artificial, in anger I've been tempted to do them a bleach soak. The possibilities are endless. Anything goes, so if you want to wear denim like this the only thing that matter is will your small community accept it? If not, maybe you need a new tribe. I personally think denim only belongs on jeans in 2021, so there you go. It's amazing what people are willing to get so opinionated about.
