Spot on Devvon, you just uncovered what the "Big guys " don't want newbies to know. What happens is that once you finish your mix and everything sounds awesome and all, you hit your limiter or even your mastering engineer and all hell break lose. Limiting will introduce some sonic characteristics that are bound to change your overall tonal balance, and is always the snare, the strings, and the bass that among others ends up out of wack. You have a new subscriber here, you really tell it without hype. blessings. 👍

This is the big secret that a lot of beginner engineers fail to take advantage of...there's a lot of bs tips out there that talk about how you shouldn't have anything on your master when you mix...but there's no way of being able to gage how your kick sounds when it's soft-clipped / pushed while mixing unless u have your limiter on.

Good quality video. A lot of people have a limiter on their 2 bus and then turn it on from time to time to see what effect it has on the whole mix. I think it’s a good idea. It seems less common for engineers to leave the limiter on the whole time while mixing, but some do.

The popular philosophy taught everywhere is to don't use a limiter doing the mixing, save the limiter for the mastering. I've learned the hard way that sticking to the norm only produces norm results! Screw what the so-called pros say: use a limiter during mixing. I think the results can often be much better.
@threezysworld8089

One thing I know, at least regarding FL is that it's actually OK for the main bus to clip a little. That is another way to squeeze a little more volume out of your mix. Never heard any real hard rules regarding when and where to use a compressor/limiter. I would think the reason they say to leave out the limiting is because the person mastering is supposed to do that. They're also supposed to have lots of high priced equipment to squeeze out those last little bits of quality (realistically the most important part because it's what will put you over the rest). In other words mastering is SUPPOSED to be them doing things that you can't (by virtue of being cost prohibitive) because you'd never be able to without the right equipment, no matter how bad you wanted to. It's basically like garnishing a meal. That meal technically isn't 100% finished until it's made to look it's best on a plate, even though the vast majority of people would eat it regardless. You're doing it to make sure that even the pickiest of the pickiest eaters will be satisfied as well. Those "picky eaters" are your artists, producers etc. your customers, in a very competitive marketplace. Because I can show a 5/10 beat to someone who knows jack about making beats and they'll think it's the greatest thing they've ever heard. Show that same beat to someone who knows what they're doing though and it's like "well you have distortion here, it's clipping there, getting muddy here, your structure is too amateurish, etc". And at the end of the day, most of those "picky eaters" are your customers. Anyone can tell you that your beat is the greatest they ever heard, especially if they're not the ones forking over the money for it.

I Mix with a mastering chain and limiter. I like hearing how it sounds close to final. I always do rough mixes/ masters and then stay away for weeks to months before i do a final mix /master. getting distance from my tracks to be able to make better judgement calls i realized several years ago helps a lot. I also have stock DAW limiters on most of my tracks as a just in case for peaks and transients. They don’t do much of anything besides preventing transients popping through without having to over compress (if im using compression on that particular track). Great explanation as to why to do this.

ARC has a pretty slow release, so this gives a subtle compression effect, even without gain reduction. That's right, this is what mastering engineers refer to as the color of the limiter.

@threezysworld8089
@threezysworld8089 Жыл бұрын
My question is where does that limiter go onto the bus for you. For instance I have kick sidechaining into bass, then I still need to compress bass and kicks with rest of drums, then sidechain that into the beat? The reason that I ask is because if you don't have a solid process you're gonna be doing a lot of back and forth. Like say I sidechain kick into bass, then I realize I need to lower kicks, now I have to change the settings on the compressor as well. So just off that it would make sense that compression is one of the very last things you do after EQ and what not are all dialed in.
