Why I Moved Abroad Alone in my 40’s

A question that l'm often asked is why I decided to make this move.
Back in 2007, when I left LA to go to NYC (at age 26), people asked me the same question. I had a great job, home, friends/family, and the weather was always so perfect - why would I choose to quit and move so far away to a place where I knew no one, barely had any money, with no job lined up?
NYC had my heart. Yes, l've had some of the roughest years of my life in NYC, but I wouldn't have traded them for anything. But (after 2020, 15 years of living there, and turning 40) I couldn't help but feel that this chapter of my life was closing. I didn't know quite how/when that was going to happen - I just knew that it was coming.
Now, here I am, making another big (hugely disruptive) move yet again. Back to knowing no one, quitting my job and relying on the little savings that I have and, on top of it all, having to learn an entirely new language. But, regardless of how hard I knew it was going to be, I also knew that it was the right decision for me. Especially as a person who never wants to stop growing, learning, and improving. Who knows where this journey will take me? l'm excited to find out.

Thank you so much for this video! I was searching for content from 40's year olds make big life moves. I feel alone sometimes...I'm 40 and I'm making the big move to LA from the east coast. Tons of videos are younger people in their 20's talking about moving across country. It feels refreshing to see someone my age taking risks and still living and learning from life! This video was confirmation for me that yes, even though I'm 40 I can still take bigs risks and follow my heart! Congratulations on your new journey in Mexico

It makes me so happy that this video resonated with you! And I'm so excited for you and this new chapter of your life. It's never ever too late and we're often led to believe that it is because of these societal norms that we just blindly follow without even knowing why. And yes, it can feel like you're alone in a sea of 20-somethings taking the plunge, but believe me you're not!

Thank you for sharing. I'm nearing my 38th birthday and still dreaming of moving somewhere new. I've lived in China for 1 year in my 20s and loved it so much. Only my fear of "being too old" is holding me back. But my soul is needing the challenge for sure. Thank you ❤

We've been conditioned to believe that there is one life-cycle, which is simply not true. At this age I'm much more self-actualized and in a place where I can experience even more things than I did when I was younger. Life is too short to live it any other way than how you truly want to.

So happy to have found you. I am on the same path and visited Mexico City in January. I just sent your video to my beloved college best friend who is a Mexican national. He lives in Polanco. Hope you two will meet as you’d both appreciate each other. Love Tera
