I'm 71 living on my SSI fixed income. I FINALLY got me a a little used 16ft camper that I can pull eith my 2004 SUV. I cannot tell you how freeing this lifestyle is. I was so afraid to step out and do this and wish I had done it sooner. I sold EVERYTHING and purged and gifted everything I did not sell and now this is my home and my backyard is where I park it. I am so blessed and so grateful that I took the plunge. I'm so very happy for you that you ate doing this while young. The young ppl I follow on KZbin are doing great things. Saving every nickel and dime and buying better rigs. I follow a cop, a nurse, a law student and they are all so happy. I'm proud of you. God bless you. ❤

From the perspective of a 58 yr old on SSDI, I'm in a toxic relationship and I'm so over it! Not to mention our country is going to heck in a hanbasket; so I've made the decision to hit the road in my sedan and make the best I can of it. Ive had a massive heart attack and came close to death. I figure I got 10-15 yrs left and I'm gonna see as much and go to as many places as I can before I transition on! I don't expect it to be easy, but I expect to experience better things! I sit in my apartment mostly, and go to the gym a few times a week. Well, I can do that and much more out of my car, and save at least $1,000 a month. Thanks for the inspiration young lady! Bless

During college I wound up having to live out of my car - this was the 80s, but I was a student and we still had student health center/gym so yeah - Library, gym, meal plan, car, sleep. And it was... calming. Nothing to blindside me, no one to rely on other than myself, I was in great shape and able to focus on my studies or go see a concert somewhere remote, sleep there, etc.. Then I decided to "grow up." BIG MISTAKE. Decades later I'm heading out again. There is no cheese in the maze, the cake is a lie, however you want to put it. This year I've been to Chicago, Montreal, Japan for a few weeks, Florida, the Carolinas, and I'm out to Germany next month. Life is for living, don't stop.

I'm living in a motorhome because I got sick with cancer and was in the hospital 30 days and when I came out they wanted rent and I was like I haven't worked in over a month and then the next day I was on the street homeless on the street so when I got my settlement I bought an RV to never again be living on the sidewalk on the streets

For years, I always thought to get a smaller sized van to tour the country in retirement. That was before "living the van life" turned into a thing and the demographic shifted a bit. I talked to people doing it in their 50s 20 years ago and they looked free and happy! When you are in your 20s it feels like you'll be young forever. The 30s is a blur...but don't look now...suddenly you are half way to your 40s when you are 35. It goes buy fast!! See clip on KZbin from the movie City Slickers "It's All Downhill From Here". Bottom line is: age is a mindset and I feel young (via exercise / diet) but the world loves to categorize you based on a number. Have goals and work toward them. Die With Zero (book) is thought provoking but I also think creating generational wealth and looking beyond *self* is worth thinking about. All the best and have those adventures! Yes, it is little different when 25 years go by - but there is also hope for adventure when you step out. It's important to move beyond societal perceptions that lock us down.

I, too, am hacking life by living in a car & I am happy to see a fellow "van lifer" with the same outlook as me. Yeehaw, enjoy the travel & freedom. I have a question though - as a woman who goes out and has a social life while living in a van, what are you safety precautions while navigating that? Specifically, the part where you get back to you van & retire for the night. I often times am parked on the street or nearish hustle & bustle due to working night shifts and I don't always feel incognito returning to my car at a late hour when I know people see me. Thoughts on returning to car at late hours while in populated places?
@madisonraetogo9 ай бұрын
If I have no friends in town, I don’t let people know I’m here in a van I just say I’m visiting family. And after night I never exit my van, I just pulled into a place and sleep. Yee haw!

There's no 'correct' for van life. I'm living in a sorta-running 86 Dodge Xplorer. By sorta running, it has no alternator. I feed the engine from solar, drive a ways, then stay somewhere until my batteries are charged up again. If you wanna spend 100k on a van, go for it. But I've spent about 10k total on my van itself (not including gas) over 5 years.

How is your car insurance only $50 a month? When I got mine, it was around $160 a month with a clean driving record and paying in a 6 month chunk for the discount. It's also full coverage Then, I got in an accident and it jumped up in price and I didn't have enough money for the 6 month discount and it was like $270 a month. They just raised it again to like $320 a month and ai didn't do anything. I've see other people say theirs went up a bunch for no reason too. It's crazy! I need to see if another company will be cheaper.

I moved in to my Toyota truck camper 4 years ago (by choice). I was spending 2250 a month for an apt I was never at. Since then I’ve managed to pay all my debt and save 152k. I maintain a high paying full time job, so everyone thinks I’m crazy. In the next couple years I’ll be buying land and moving off grid. I’ll use it as a homemade, but most of my time will be spent on the road. Sacrifice now while you’re young! I’m 33, plan to semi retire by 40. Can’t wait 5-7 years to ask my friends “are you still paying off your house? That’s crazy!” 😂
