I moved to Colombia - about 45 minutes from Medellin up in the mountains - 17 years ago and haven't looked back. You can live very comfortably here on no more than $2000 USD and eat out more than you cook at home.

As a fellow Aussie living in Colombia I'm really enjoying your content. Please keep it up! Though I have to mention, Colombians would absolutely call someone "blackie". I'm not sure what your level of Spanish is so you mightve missed it. But it's super common to hear someone directly referred to as negrito/negtira (even if it doesn't come from a hateful place.) But I still think you are correct that there is very little racism here. They're just very direct. You'll also hear people being called "flaco/gordo". It took me a while to pick up on it.
@AKJoel
@AKJoel Жыл бұрын
Yeah I've heard that but they use the term from a place of equality and familiarity - they just describe people literally by any unique feature that distinguishes them. I've spoken to a lot of AfroColombians and they mostly say they hardly encounter racism in their country - something none of my dark skinned friends from Australia can say - some to this day face this shit on a daily basis.

@@AKJoel All my family calls me "negro" or "negrito" or "mi negro (ito)" and I'm not even black, just darker than them, they're white-ish. In short, we mix a lot, we don't care about race, but we care if you're charismatic, attractive, wealthy, and other basic stuff, but race is just not that important. We also tend not to be as sensitive, so if you're particularly white, black, brown, ginger, tall, short, bald, white-haired, attractive, dorky, thin, or fat we will point it out here and there throughout regular interactions, no second thoughts.

A Colombian here who lived in The States and Malta. Of course there are racist people in Colombia but compared to USA or Europe this time I can tell isn't that terrible like the places I mentioned. The thing is that Colombia is one of the most multiracial countries in America. We are a mix among Native Americans, Europeans, blacks so you will see everything. I am lucky enough to have a remote job that pays pretty well ($80K/yr), so I am looking to sell my home in the suburbs and go to someplace like Medellin for 3-6 months at a time and save up money and see if it's a place I want to put roots down in. I'm planning my scouting trip for sometime in the next few weeks. Your videos have been very thorough and helpful and much appreciated!

Solid reasons for leaving. Can’t say I blame you. I’m Canadian and I’ve always felt that our two countries are similar in terms of cost of living. Ridiculously overpriced. I also noted the behaviours of our governments during the C19 years (despicable) and it’s honestly made me want to leave this place. The materialistic, money centric lifestyles and closed off attitudes are also taxing tbh. I’ve been to Colombia (Medellín and Cartagena) and had a good time in both places but Brazil was much more my speed. The active beach lifestyle of Rio was intoxicating. I’m definitely considering it now as a place to retire. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 👍
@AKJoel
@AKJoel Жыл бұрын
Man I loved Brazil when I was there and definitely more my speed, since I'm a surfer and love the beach. The only problem is that I don't speak Portuguese and moving there would require that I put a lot of hours into learning, since I'm not the type of traveler who'd be happy just hanging with other foreigners. If I wasn't able to make local connections and learn about their culture I'd feel like I was missing out big time. It's definitely a goal for the future though!
@tclass99

If you’re fluent in Spanish you’re halfway to Portuguese! I think you’d pick it up fairly quickly tbh. Brazil has so many great beach cities too… Recife… Salvador… Rio… Floripa… Fortaleza… so much to choose from. I hope that you make it there one day. Til then enjoy Colombia! 👍

Hey mate - yes the threats stopped and I'm 99% certain I found out who it was - it actually wasn't a Colombian at all.... I haven't made a vegan video, just cos I didn't think there would be much appeal, but to answer your question it's very difficult especially once you leave the big cities. AK - this is a fantastic video! Thank you for making it. I have been to Colombia quite a few times and I knew most of the reasons why Colombia is great, but you synthesized them all so well here - and personal improvement isn’t something I had thought about. Who wouldn’t want to take singing lessons? That’s a great idea - seriously. I will probably sign up for your Masterclass. I am coming next week, Aug 21st. I am going to send this video to my parents because they don’t quite understand what makes Colombia so special and you do a terrific job of explaining it. I am not sure if you’ll get this message in time, but where would you recommend staying in El Poblado or Central Laureles? I stayed near El 70 & 44 in Laureles last time and it was okay. However, the video you made with the woman from Chicago makes El Poblado sound good - despite the many gringos that are there. Thanks again - great job!

@AKJoel
@AKJoel Жыл бұрын
AU $2k is around US$1.3k - you can definitely get by but it depends where you live. To live in Poblado in your own apartment this is gonna be extremely tight and the apartment is gonna be pretty small. In Laureles, Belen or Envigado this is doable as rent should cost $700 - $1000 per month for a nice place - short term rental. If you rent longer term through local channels that price will come down. My expenses are like $700 a month BUT I moved in with my girlfriend and we pay rent to her parents (which is very low.) At the time of this video the rent in Medellin was MUCH cheaper - like 30% to 40%. It's skyrocketed lately (on Airbnb) - so If I was to recalculate my expenses and factor in that I was living in an Airbnb - my $1k would be closer to $1.5k now.

G'day Joel‼️.. I'm from Sydney. Just one question to ask,.. are u of Sri Lankan (Sinhalese / Tamil) heritage or born there, or background even from India or Bangladesh. Why I'm asking u, as my father and his family are from Colombo in Sri Lanka. Their mother was very dark. I used to know Sri Lankans outside my relatives, whom I played cricket against some yrs back. Btw, nice to know that you're living in a place that u like to live in. I have a Colombian mate here from Medellín, and is planning to go back for a holiday in around June next year, and has suggested me to come with him, as my Spanish isn't bad. He doesn't know any fellow Aussies like myself, who can speak a good amount of Spanish as I can. I told him that i would love to go over to Sth America, as I've never been there. But have been to over 30 countries myself.

And everything is banned in Australia. The national past time is to identify some potential risk, no matter how obtuse, exaggerate it out of all proportion and then be the one to devise a way to mitigate it. Usually by banning something. @@AKJoel Same here. The government broke the social contract and the sheep applauded. That was the straw that broke my back, so I sold everything and moved to Brazil. There will be more lockdowns in the future, masks will become advised and eventually mandatory each flu season, etc. I used to joke that one day it would be illegal to walk on the wrong side of the footpath, for safety, of course.
