Fruits and other food stuff that are considered delicious - like lulo - and the way they are eaten in different parts of the world... I am a born and reised Colombian who happens to travel a lot around. I have been multiple times to Indonesia and other places in South East Asia. I also married an Indonesian who came to Colombia and still lives here. Being the above mentioned countries located in the tropics, there are many different fruits common to both, like avocado. The way we in Colombia eat avocado is though completely different than in Indonesia. I LOVE avocado just scooping it out of the skin after sprinkling a little bit of salt and some lemon juice, or added to a green salad, or prepared in guacamole. I still have, however, difficulties eating avocado in Indonesia where it's added in a smoothy or ice cream with chocolate or condensed milk. Nevermind comparing the taste and likes/dislikes for fruits that are not so common in Colombia but very much eaten and liked in SEA, like Durian. But that is another long story....

Medellín's history is fascinating in that it was somewhat protected from the Spanish Inquisition due to being more difficult to access because of the Andes Mountains. Cartagena was more heavily impacted by Spaniards. Paisa of Medellín are descendants of natives and Spaniards from Extremadura region. The tongue is considered the most beautiful spanish.

It's an exaggeration off course, Colombians love hyperbole, simply to point out the cleverness of paisas, it doesn't mean that we think they'll take advantage or something like that.... Unpredictable rules and regulations are a good reason for not putting much money into rental units. Commercial property in a given city or country should only constitute a small percentage of your total portfolio.

They have supposedly been "cracking down" on what they call "para-hotels", i.e. Airbnbs, in Medellin for at least 10 years. But there are now more short term rentals than ever before. In Bangkok Airbnbs are illegal, but it is still super easy to find an Airbnb apartment there. These 3rd world governments simply have a lot more important things to deal with.

My last trip a month ago I spent $9K, but I went to Cartagena and rented a 4 bedroom Mansion but I always get a jacuzzi or private pool. I spend about $1k a day on average, but I can spend a fraction of that in Medellin. Easily spent over $50K in Colombia this year alone, and well into the six figures in 3 years. I'm buying a home to cut down on my expenses, obviously.

I don't want to be negative, but I'm a Colombian living in Australia (over a decade) and Australian are very easy going, the greed many times in the elevator (not as much as Colombia though). But more importantly, in Colombia we do drink a lot! Many families have been destroyed because of that.

About the lack of seatbelts. USA standards for safety in cars got tighter in the 90's due to government regulations, however those same cars were not able to be sold in latinamerican countries due to the same standards, meaning 2 tier safety standards, one for wealthy countries, one for developing countries. Obviously Colombia and its counterparts got the short part of the stick
