My parents are obsessed with politics, constantly listening to it, and over time I've noticed them becoming angrier, more hateful to people that don't think or act like they do, and are constantly just letting themselves actively get brainwashed by it. I remember when I was a kid they seemed happier, and more free, but now they don't go out anymore, choosing to sit in front of the TV and live politics, constantly. It's incredibly tragic and depressing. I refuse to go down that path.

It’s also a privilege to be able to pay attention to it for simply how time consuming it is. Know what's going on and move on. I don't get why people debate and spend so much time talking about things that will never change nor take any action of their own to make change. It's time-consuming and just gets people frustrated. Politicians are paid for by elites and lobbyists who have their own agenda. They are liars and don't actually care about the greater good of people. This should have been clear years ago, but somehow, people still think politics are legit. You're much better off improving yourself mentally, physically, spiritually, and financially as much as possible with the freedoms this country still has to offer. Very soon, they will start to strip away, rights, and no one will do anything about it cause we are so focused on ourselves and afraid to start a revolution. So this whole Joe Biden this and Donald Trump's that 3-hour discourse is essentially useless when u look at the bigger picture.

Honestly not everyone needs to talk about politics very often. It’s an uncomfortable issue for many and there are other ways to positively effect others in your day to day life. However I do believe voting and a certain level of engagement is your civic duty though. There’s really no excuse not to stay caught up on world events and know who you want to vote for, if anyone, come Election Day. I’ve been a news junkie lately but downloading a few news apps on your phone and reading 15-30 minutes a day is probably all you really need. Reading your news is much less addictive and more informative than cable news in my opinion. My go too apps at the moment are the BBC and ground news. I feel I remember the information I learn much better, I’m less likely to stay in my echo chambers and I can see a wider range of stories in a relatively short period of time. And when I say you should know who you want to vote for, that is especially true at the local level which effects you the most. It’s a bit of a pain to figure out who you support running for city council or whatever but at most you just need to set aside a day, or perhaps a few hours, every few years to research the candidates.

Maintaining like you said in the second half that friends, family, acquaintances, peers, and more is what give people meaning. More so organizing food drives, helping the elderly is also what I mean by community. Pretty much just helping the people around you. Instead of being solely individualist, just allowing selflessness within reason. You don’t want to burn yourself out. Btw, you are definitely correct an individual cannot change the world, but a more grassroots movement in theory can change the world. As an example we have the civil rights movement back in the 60s to make it so that under law, African Americans and other minorities would be pretty much regarded as equals to everyone else. Today we have protests like the one collectively across the world against Israel. With all that, I’m not the best person to ask because I am still learning, and I’m not an expert on this. There’s more educated people out there to give you more thought out answers to your questions. Sidenote: Your videos have really helped me out with gaining perspective over the years. Thank you.

The president isn’t the sole person making most of the decisions for the county. There are certain powers the president has and certain powers the other two branches of government have when it comes to enacting laws, declaring war, and most other major actions the government takes. Each branch usually has a say in these decisions, and the president is just the head of one of the three branches.

For the first point about voting one person to president. That's why I'm pretty happy to live in Germany. We have multiple parties (conservatives, social democrats, economic liberals, greens etc.) and your mentality is to vote the party, not the person representing it that will become chancelor (similar to the US president). Furthermore, because it's multiple parties, none has the absolute power in the end. They need to form coalitions with other parties to form a government. Through that they need to find different compromises with the other parties on different topics. I think this is essential part for a democracy to find compromises with the goals with your fellow citizens
@therodentryresistance95
@therodentryresistance95 2 ай бұрын
This coalition of parties is dangerous too, look at us here in Spain. We have a president that was far from getting the majority needed to rule so he pacted with several different parties to achieve power, including the Catalonian secessionist party whose leader is wanted by the justice department. In my opinion there should be a second round were the two most voted political parties of the general elections compete to see who is going to rule for the next 4 years. But to be honest it doesn't matter, here in Spain we have an oligarchy not a democracy, there is no separation of powers, so at the end of the day politicians end up doing whatever they want, regardless of ideology.

I always thought a Social Democracy of some sort could fix it. Such as a push for community, public transport, biking and the sort. Fix our 72 years worth of horrible urban planning. Establish a public Healthcare system, paid for by taxes. Build as much housing as possible, Public and private. All of this advocated by further unionization, and class struggle. The economy is acturally decent by GDP and unemployment numbers. But that does not mean workers feel the benifits of that. And even if they did, it does not benifit them mentally. But now, I wonder if the Obstacles that presents it self in Liberalism/Capitalism will ever allow for such large reforms.

Hey Cole. I've been watching your videos and they really helped me a lot, and I want to thank you for helping me get through tough times. Now let's talk about this video. I totally understand and empathise with your apathy with politics (just by watching this video, I assume you were burned out by it as well). You make a lot of great points in your video about why you don't talk about politics. But here's the truth about American politics: the real reason why it is so polarised and divided is because of the First-past-the-post two party system. It has become this binary, zero-sum, winner-take-all politics that doesn't see eye-to-eye and instead becomes entrenched in political and ideological warfare over differences in views and beliefs. And no, things are not getting better by fixing themselves because the duopoly system is designed that way. Having the old heads die and replaced with the newer generation is and expecting the polarisation to fix themselves is, frankly, wishful thinking. The only way to fix this is adopting a proportional multiparty system. This is because a PR system is better equipped in dealing with extremism and polarisation. Because in this system, it leaves room for different parties to compromise and work together to get things done, even if they disagree with each other. Not to mention, there will be more views and representations for people who don't identify as either red or blue. Instead of having moderates and crazies pigeonholed in the same two boats, they can split up and become their own parties instead. And when you do this, everyone has their say on matters, which means everyone is represented. Every voice matters, not just the red and blue. Politics becomes more nuanced and diverse, instead of binary red and blue. If you look at countries with a PR system, they all have higher Democracy Index rating than the US and they have stabler government. They all have experience extremism and polarisation, too, but they are much more muted compared to the US. So the duopoly system is the cause of the current disquiet. Lee Drutman talks about this in his book, "Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop", which I highly recommend you give it a read. He talks about this in greater detail than what I've said here. There's also the proposed Fair Representation Act bill, which includes STV (also called RCV) and multi-member districts, the latter proven to curb gerrymandering.

The rest of us who care about improving society will be fighting to make a change. And maybe you'd actually see that change if you paid real attention. You talk about npc's but you yourself are one. The type of NPC that spends all his time thinking about things but doesnt put an ounce of effort into gathering any facts about them. "Surely if it makes sense in my mind then thats good enough!". If you admit you dont know what you are talking about, then try to change that the best you can. Then maybe youd get a real opinion. 5:36 The US is exceptional in how polarized it is and part of it is just how much the media ecosystems between the left and right have diverged. We don't consume the same media. Some people exclusively get their news from social media and reactions, others from legacy media. And some groups have withdrawn from legacy media to make their own media sphere. Another aspect is how we connect to each other. Deep connections are harder to make than in the past. And we don't touch grass like we used to so it leaves us more vulnerable to these parasocial connections with media pundits and leaves less space for disagreement. One thing that has helped a lot of me is asking why a person would act in a certain way, beyond a one word answer or label. Is it actually something malicious or a convoluted government system? Sometimes one, sometimes both, sometimes neither, but I often find that it is something convoluted. I personally try to make a distinction between how government works and the politics associated with it. The former is where it happens and the latter is how. I always encourage people to learn how it work because a lot of groups leverage the system because there's no one to push back on it when there's important stuff happening at any level of governement, especially local affairs. A lot of the brokenness in our governemnt is by design. Why do we have a two party system? First-past-the-post voting which sees third parties hurt their allies by splitting the vote, for example. Why do some states matter and others don't? Electoral Collages for example. Nothing is going to be perfect in a 200+ yeaar old system.

I think an answer to the president problem I’ll call it, as in referring to your point on why this one man would have the control and power as well as actually getting things done. The issue I believe began with having wartime presidents where we did (and rightly) look to them as leaders. But that is not the job of the president as defined by the founders. The president is to preside (hence the name) over the government, not to lead or make sweeping changes. The president is to be the voice of the people, all the people, at the top. We vote on our lawmakers in the house and senate to represent each of our state and regions. They have the authority to make changes working together. A president shouldn’t run for office saying “I will make X great change to fix this issue” instead of say we take housing as an example, every young person right now is very concerned about affordable housing, a president then should be running more on a notion of “there is a great issue of housing for the youth and I will direct congress to creating something to fix this” If we have then elected responsible members of congress they would then be drafting legislation to benefit these masses most, and if the president is presented with the law he is to ratify or veto it. That moment should be what we choose a president for. We choose the person we think would make the right choice in signing it or saying “no this will not do” Instead we just have a polarized battle now over who is in charge or the leader. That’s why it’s so ridiculous now when the candidates are always talking about being a leader. WE ARE A COUNTRY FOUNDED ON NOT HAVING A LEADER!! The president is just our best chosen voice. It used to be that the candidates actually agreed on all the issues in the country but just differed in ways of doing it. Now it’s “there are millions of illegal immigrate pouring into our country” “nuh uh” “we need free healthcare as Americans can not afford to live” “no way” it’s just a stupid stonewalling and then tribalism on our part as the populace continues thinking of it as voting for my teams king for 4 years. I say fair on you to ignore or stay away from politics since at the end of the day as long as you can still eat breathe and be happy it’s okay. We’re just in a shaky time right now and if you do vote, don’t get trapped into voting for someone you don’t think is a good person. Not if you’re told they are bad or good, but if you watch them speak and you don’t think they are a good person then don’t. I don’t know how much faith I have left in the upholding of our designed system but I do believe that as long as the vote I cast is for someone I feel is okay to represent me that’s all that matters since I’m not the whole country but it’s my drop so.

All politics do not hinge on capitalism, politics exist in socialist states around the world as well and existed among feudal states. If there is money and power there are politics. And naturally all of society has imbalances of power, no matter the system. Therefore there are always politics. Capitalism is founded on the idea of man’s inherent greed, because human nature tends towards capitalism anyway. That’s why a government by the people for the people is important to have the authority to check and kick when a few people get too greedy. And of course there is room for government divisions where something is perhaps too dangerous to be left in private hands like infrastructure (be it for the danger of making it inaccessible to many) but we see corruption there as well anyway. Man is a corrupt being, whatever system we use it will be corrupt. The Russians really did want “true” communism so to say but the corrupt figures of Stalin and crew filled their bellies and pockets instead.

You also made a huge assumption saying i don't care about the life shattering conditions for minorities, and that i have an indiffernce towards human suffering. Where did you pull that statement from, exactly? Have you ever considered the fact that you don't need to be extremely deep into politics to make a difference for these underprivileged groups? Why do you think I make the videos I do on the main channel?

@@the-special-soupWe were far better off economically under his leadership. Foreign affairs were the most stable and secure it’s ever been. Gas and grocery prices were very low and extremely affordable. You can sit here and cry about his rhetoric, but he was a very successful President if you’re willing to look past your feelings.
@the-special-soup
@the-special-soup 2 ай бұрын
@@roguexxrenegade "...look past your feelings". Aren't you missing the whole point of the video by resorting to basic 2016 strawman attacks? The notion that Trump had good economic policy is laughable. He created a flat corporate tax, benefiting big businesses. His famous Trump tax cuts provided marginal tax cuts to the working class that have long since expired while providing permanent and significant tax cuts to the wealthy. This has also created a massive increase to the debt that republicans seem to care so much about. He continued to push for deregulation, which in times of ecological disaster and wealth inequality is probably a bad thing. Moving on to his reactionary foreign policy, his trade war with China was disastrous for American farmers while having little to no effect on securing better trade relations with China. He initiated discussions of withdrawal from Afghanistan with the Taliban without including the Afghan government leaving Biden with the inevitable chaos that followed. The notion of him starting no new conflict is laughable when he increased drone and missile strikes around the world and poured gasoline on the Israel-Palestine conflict. His border policy isn't realistic and he scapegoats migrants to spread fear. You attribute low grocery and gas prices to Trump when in reality, his deregulation and negligent COVID relief distribution greatly contributed to the inflation and price gouging we saw following COVID. He appointed some pretty religious nuts on the supreme court that are dismantling decades and decades of precedent. He stripped away the rights of trans people, and his COVID response was pretty terrible. Also you can insult my "feelings" all you want but as a president it's probably pretty important to not be an asshole. You are the figure head of the country after all. Objectively speaking, he created so much division in this country, caused so much doubt in basic science, and literally tried to launch a coup based on claims of election fraud that have been endlessly debunked. I could go on and on about his bad policy but I think I've made my point. Also I think this response will fall on deaf ears any way. I will clarify that I'm not the biggest fan of Biden but his policies are just objectively more beneficial for the working class, and he actually worked to fight corporate greed. So I must ask, do you really think Trump is better for the economy? or is it your feelings and sympathy for his bigotry that really fuel you?

I think this video is a really good example of why people SHOULD pay attention to politics. I don’t mean to sound pretentious but your nonchalant attitude reeks of centrist entitlement. The mob/“team sport” mentality that occurs in our two party system is a direct consequence of not examining our material conditions and analyzing the source of our problems. You also mention how those obsessed with politics tend to be judgmental and closed minded of those outside of their ideologies. However you seem to display the same judgement and disdain towards those that care about politics. Overall this is a really simplistic and poor analysis of politics. I know you made a disclaimer saying you didn’t know too much about politics but why would you make a video about if you don’t??? I respect your right to have an opinion but do know that it makes you look pretty ignorant.
@CoalHastings

Thanks for the feedback. I hope I wasn't giving off entitlement. Ignorance, yes, I can agree. The reason I felt the need to make this video is to make it apparent just how many people do think this way, and why that needs to change. I was not trying to endorse this way of thinking. I have no disdain and judgment for people who care about politics. If anything, it's the opposite. Sorry if it came off otherwise

Something else I'd like to know is what i need to examine in order to change the obviously flawed way of the government running things. Other than voting, what can I do to actually make people's lives more enjoyable in this country? Genuine question. Making the type of KZbin videos I do on my main channel seems like one of the simplest/most effective ways to do this, and instill positive change in people who feel like they're powerless against the government.

@@CoalHastings I think you actually had a pretty good point at the end of the video where you encourage people to become more involved locally, or find their niche. Local politics is a great starting point for change and is especially important for grassroots, working-class activism. I've taken a look at your other videos and I like your overall message. WHICH IS WHY IT DRIVES ME CRAZY that you write off politics as inconsequential in this video. Decades of austerity and Neo-liberalism is directly responsible for so much of the isolation we feel today and it pains me that you didn't diagnose that. Also, do note that I am heavily baised towards the left so don't just take my word for it but actually take a look at cause and effects of the policies that are being passed at the local, state, and federal level.
