One thing that you didn’t talk about which is very important to me and a key factor to take into account is what about when I die? Yup.. CD Baby makes more sense to me as well. Many artists will never get heard by more than a small % of the global population, even if they persist in music (and most will quit). I'm not a hater, but you make it look like Distrokid sponsored this video haha . IMHO, I prefer to pay one single time and then forget about any other fee for the rest of my life. I don't know if, in 20 years time, I would still care about my first release. Another thing that I don't like about Distrokid is that, yes you only pay one fee per year and get access to unlimited music releases, but you have to pay for Content ID and Shazam too, whilst CD Baby has that covered. I am not an expert, this is just my opinion after comparing one to another (I even haven't released any music yet, my first single is coming out at the end of this month (I use CD Baby) so you see I'm just gettng started). Just wanted to give my point of view!

I would like to see data on artist results between distribution services. It's interesting to hear keeping 85% of publishing royalties being described as a negative when huge bands whose songs we all know have signed over half, most or ALL of their publishing royalties as part of their deal with record companies and they toured off of the albums releases and sold merchandise before eventually signing a better deal. The band Kansas did that for one example. The publisher owned all of their publishing and then kept investing a lot of money into album production and after a few albums they eventually scored huge with Carry On (my wayward son). The publisher made the investment money back and plenty more and the band went on to sign a better deal when the contract expired and they came back with Dust in the Wind and Point of Know Return which were huge hits and they then kept touring on those hits. A Current lineup still exists. Now, obviously, I am not suggesting that anyone reading this sign over 100% of their publishing! What I am pointing out though is that when people or organizations profit from your success, they are more inclined to help you succeed. I am not putting down this video in an way though. It presents some things that should be considered when making these decisions about who to work with and that includes publishing, but it would be interesting to see if there is any trend between artist results when working with different distributors. Do the ones who have more to gain from your success actually bring you more success?
@mousepd2 жыл бұрын
Exactly right. I mean as for me? I'll take 70% or even 50% of something over 100% of nothing any day. So, for me to be convinced that any Publisher would want my songs to succeed. Common sense would tell you there has to be something in it for them than just the upfront money from releasing a song. Yes. CD Baby probably makes a good amount from those upfront costs. But look how much more they would make if even a small percentage of users had hit songs.
@mikeanderson1370 Жыл бұрын
I think "wins in this round" depends on what each individual person is looking for. Personally, I only had to pay $50, one time fee, for the album. Now, I would have to pay it again for each future about I release, and I just now realized that (haha), but there are no yearly fees for the same music I already released. NOW...as a nobody musician, I don't expect to make enough money from streaming to matter. Spotify, and similar sites, do not pay JACK for streams. If I'm gonna pay an annual fee, for that same release, I need to be making enough money each year to at least cover the yearly fee. If I am paying $30 a year, I need to be making $30 a year. To make $30 a year, from Spotify streams, I would have to have have 10,000 streams in a year....just to break even. I'm not gonna get 10,000 streams in a year...maybe...if I get lucky and figure that part out. :) But, I'm not gonna rely on that. I release an album as soon as it is mastered. When I go to record/mix/master, I expect to fork out a bunch of money for all of that, and distribution goes with that chunk. I can pay a 1 time fee of $50, to release each album, and never have to pay anything for it again, and just have music to stream on all the major sites. So, for me, CDBaby wins EVERY round.

It's very good compared, but you need to mention this to those smaller composers/musicians! A hobby composer who doesn't pump out that many songs and is nobody in the music world, the yearly income could be less than the annual fee, so in this case, negative income is generated every year. 69$ one time forever on the other hand can hurt a lot and with that extra commission, but the hobby composer doesn't have to care about it after distributing the music. Another alternative is ONErpm, but I don't think it's that good than CD babe.

Its a pain 🤦🏽♂️ i wish it was like tunecore where it not only shows you total sales but also total streams so easily! I been with CDbaby for 20 years now you’d think they’d be better! I have 20 albums on cdbaby trying to find out how many streams will be a pain and time consuming trying to figure it out! I did one so far and it took 4 hours to do it! 3,348,587 streams! They don’t do sync licensing at all. If you pay for all of the “extras” on distrokid it’s almost $80 a year for a single when you could just pay $5 to cd baby and get the things distrokid calls “extra” also, you can’t pick a release date on the $20 distrokid plan. Distrokid is more expensive unless you’re getting the absolute basics or unless you generate hundreds of thousands of streams.

The customer service of Cd baby is so bad.. I need to change my artist name in the platforms to release my new music and they made it a nightmare. The first time I contact the customer service they just responded me 2 weeks later with a generic email telling me that they can't change any released song. So they never read my email cause I ain't talked about any released.. I tried to contact them 3 more times and they just ignore me.. Conclusion: They can be the best company but If their customer service ain't good, the company ain't work for me..

I thing the worst part is that CD baby they support is 0 from 1 to 10 is terrible so if you have an issue you are on your own they have a robot machine answering your question with its not helpful at all .

Lol ppl are so blinded by the whole unlimited music trick. Wtf uploads dozens of songs every year? Plus last i heard once u decide to cancel your distrokid subscription theyll take ur shit off all DSP. And the legacy option is a scam. Theyll only honor that feature If you die not if u decide to just cancel the sub. This was years ago it maybe not be the case anymore. But im weary of that company

I keep reading about cd baby paying out quickly whereas distrokid takes months! Is that true?
@laurosilvestrejr.1067 ай бұрын
Actually if you think about it how these distribution companies are always changing everything that it's better to pay a per album or per song because if you ever are unable to pay every year for unlimited uploads they will just take down your music whereas CD baby your music will stay up permanently they won't take it down.

What about customer support? I've been with CD Baby for a couple of years and have released 10 songs so far. A few months ago I added two-factor verification for my login and ever since I am no longer able to access my artist account. I am neither able to manage my existing songs nor can I release new ones. I've written to CD Baby customer support a couple of times but haven't received any response so far. This is just unacceptable... Does anybody know what I can possibly do in such a situation?

I am sorry to hear that! All in this fucking life has become a lie and scam! It is just to be lucky to get a good service here or there! Good luck to you, greetings!

cd baby Pro publishing is not applicable in my country( Turkey) so I published my song with standard package . Can't we earn from streaming and downloads with the standard package? I have added my music video to my youtube page, there is no warning about copyright and cd baby is not mentioned. Will I not earn from youtube views?

Cd baby has constant website issues. These sites won't provide timely help. The chat is moronic. The email case ticket is painfully slow. But.....none of the companies are user friendly...a real kitty litter box

Hey Ladon...could you do a video on why CD Baby does not pay Tik Tok royalties for streams but only for every new video that uses your music. Coz, I think I have been played...I have over a million Tik Tok collective streams of my songs, yet CD Baby records $0 for all this, it's in the fine print as well. And is there any other distributor that pays for Tik Tok stream royalties? My brain is really struggling here, kindly help.

This was a good review… Keeping it real, and showing people how much you’re getting screwed… Really makes you think about being wise when choosing a distributor!
