Before I even started learning about music, I hired an Engineer about 10 years ago and booked the studio where he worked, just to make demos of some songs and they used Cubase...And that guy was super efficient in Cubase and was also a great keyboardist and engineer. And the productions and our vocal takes, etc allowed for a lot of flexibility... Then I wanted to experience working in a bigger studio and booked studio with big boards and all Mac'ed up wit Protools, etc... And we worked with two engineers, but to make a simple demo took us about 12 hours and those guys simply could not do most of the stuff that I requested and their workflow seemed so rigid and the demo was not half of what I hoped it to sound like... And since then I realized that Cubase will be my wifey for life, and that is my platform of choice to date.

@@VIRALBEATS360 I know what you mean about Pro-Tools. It has now decided to throw up error codes when I try to play a session program. Which means I have to cold boot my Mac Mini and it works for a bit then locks up again. Weird but works ok on my Mac book pro which is older. Only reason I’m still on it is I’m so used to the workflow and can edit quicker on it than other programs. But may switch to Reaper (tempting) as it also has a nice workflow. The Pro tools licensing model is annoying. It’s like buying the program every year.

As mentioned below, what is undeniable is that the fluid process of editing audio in Pro Tools makes it quite enviable. I have a background of broadcast radio, worked in a number of studios and would have to turn around edits and mix’s very quickly, when you noticed a Pro Tools rig, you knew that (theoretically) life might be easier, thats al least if the studio was competently managed. However, and this is the big however, Avid (the owner company) are a disgrace. The sheer amount of hardware (primarily desks) generated by the them that simply no longer integrate, updates that screw your computer and woeful customer support are a considerable problem. There is also the question of having to pay monthly installements for a license as opposed to say purchasing Logic X outright and not paying for the license several times over, while weighing up just how little you actually get for your money. For example, buy Logic and you get a shedload of peripheral add on’s, a great core engine and considered updates. Pro Tools also unfortunately completely took over the music and post prodction game, Avid took the company public and began to release unstable inane updates and treat their cusomer base like crap. It’s also simply not the case that Pro Tools possess’ the superior of all the DAW’s in terms of a core audio engine.

ProTools is essentially the industry standard version of SAWStudio. Both can be really powerful in the right hands, but they're stuck in a period of history and haven't moved past it since. As much as people brag about how powerful ProTools can be at editing audio (something which other DAWs have already caught up to and surpassed), it sucks at everything else. Things which are extremely simple in other DAWs, like selecting a single track, bouncing several instruments into one track, zooming in and out vertically, importing external media and so on are a nightmare on ProTools and they only make sense if you were used to how tape based studios worked back in the day. ProTools still edits audio like a DAW from 1995 down to the unintuitive cluttered interface.

I use Pro Tools and Nuendo. I'm pretty much advanced on both DAWs, although Nuendo feels more native to me (Cubase was my first DAW). So moving from Nuendo to Pro Tools periodically, offers me a breather, and some form of change. That sometimes makes me creative. Sometimes I mix the same song on both Nuendo and PT and then compare my mixes for the best take. Believe me, you get different ideas when you work in different DAWs because of the unique ways each DAW is configured. So, I'm stuck with using both. I no longer compare. There are stuff each of them do better than the other, but they are no longer issues for me. I find ways round any difficulties on each DAW.

My first real studio job in 1998 I sold a brand new truck my grandmother bought me (with her approval) and bought a Pro Tools TDM rig with 24 inputs & outputs of my own and an old used pickup truck and went to Nashville as an independent Pro Tools Engineer. Back then having your own Pro Tools rig you could bring to someones house or project studio was a big deal. I worked mostly with Contemporary Christian Artists in Hendersonville for labels like Star Song, Myrrh Records, right before they closed in 2000, and then Word/Dayspring Records put me on the payroll for about 3 years until it was sold to AOL. But like everything in music technology it doesn't stay still for long. With Napster and the decline of the labels, more and more producers began to learn Pro Tools for themselves and no longer needed a Pro Tools engineer for sessions. The new Pro Tools HD system in 2004 was cheap enough that more studios began to buy their own systems. So I sold my entire rig to an artist and came home bought a new first gen Intel Mac Pro Tower and began to use Logic Pro 7. I had always liked Logic since version 5. But I made and saved enough money during that time to start my own studio back in my hometown, which has been my job for the better part of 20 years. I keep a copy of Pro Tools on my machines at the studio in case someone needs to use it or I get a mix session that is from another studio. But I never track or mix in Pro Tools, I faithfully use Logic Pro an occasionally Reaper. But there is no way I would go back to Pro Tools as my daily DAW it SUCKS, and I thought it sucked in 2004 LOL!!! Cheers Great Video!!

I too went to audio engineering school around the time that you did. I had pretty modest ambitions.. just recording the bands in my scene and stepping it up as I gained experience. I quickly realized the Pro Tools was not a good deal. The track count limitations on Pro Tools LE was infuriating. The fact that Digidesign dropped support for the Digi001 in version 6 brought me no confidence in the purchase of any Digi hardware. They were selling those for over a grand just a couple years earlier! On top of that, I felt like Pro Tools LE and RTAS plugins in general were system resource hogs when compared to other platforms.. when you're working on a Pentium 4 with 512 mb of RAM, that stuff REALLY matters. I ended up settling with Cubase and that was my main DAW up until a couple years ago when I switched to Reaper. I look at what Avid is doing now with their subscription junk and I'm very glad I didn't stay down the Pro Tools path.

It’s called an iLok. You stated nothing but facts and please note these issues are still ubiquitous today. I am still using pro-tools and I like you believed the same ideology, especially back in the day. Not to mention, they are on a subscription base and it’s so frustrating. I had a perpetual license for years and then all of a sudden it wasn’t “compatible” with my Mac. Go figure! However, I did invest in several DAW’s over the years and currently still have them: Studio One, logic, reasons and Reaper. I use Logic primarily for production and references but record and mix in Pro Tool. I just started dabbing into Studio one and so far, I like it. This is the year I’m letting Pro Tools go as well as I will not be renewing my subscription smh.

Pro Tools while not being the first DAW, implemented the DSP Farm cards at a time PCs alone weren't powerful enough to do effects. The farm cards basically allowed Engineers to use a bunch of plugins to replace a bunch of hardware. While expensive, it was still much cheaper than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy all of the analog equivalents, coupled with better editing capabilities. Big time studios invested heavily. But eventually PCs alone became powerful enough and the Farm cards were no longer needed.

I love the editing in pro tools, Pro tools is very very intuitive when it comes to audio editing and quick audio editing. Once you learn that workflow, I've used every daw imaginable, I started out using Cakewalk Pro audio 9, I went through every version of sonar, I've went through cubase nuendo, samplitude prox, I still use FL studio, I started off when it didn't have midi and it was called fruity loops that was in 1998. But when it comes to editing audio, Pro tools is still a monster in that regards. I love the audio engine of reaper, I just don't like the audio editing window of it. I love studio One, that is a very intuitive daw that's extremely easy to use with a familiar workflow..

Love some of your comments. I have a copy of Pro Tools that I loaded and played with for a little while. This was about 7 years ago and even then, I felt that it was over rated. The term 'industry standard' means nothing other than 'we're gonna lock you into some really expensive stuff'. I am a Cakewalk/Sonar user and I love it. I have all of the control over MIDI and the editing of audio that I could ever want and I have yet to try a plugin that didn't function as expected weather I kept it or not. Great assessment. I am glad to hear a real Pro Tools user agree with my assessment of the software. Studio One would be my choice if Cakewalk ever went away.

I had some problems with it and very easy to use but when Avid got rid of the perpetual licenses that was the final straw. I’m in the process of learning Studio One 5. It is an amazing DAW. I am a 65-year-old ex-Motown (and others) dinosaur who used down-clocked lab DACs to record audio even before there were "sound cards". I then discovered an audio card called Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum, a 16-bit, 44.1kHz card when all others (like Creative's Sound Blaster, Adlib, and others) were 8-bit toys. But they effed up and went out of business, so I switched to a 4-channel card from Turtle Beach. Cakewalk and Cubase were the go-tos for audio and midi editing, especially Cakewalk, which started as a Midi editor and was the best at it, up until Cakewalk Pro Audio came out, then it was "Bye-bye Cubase!", especially when they started that dongle nonsense. My first "professional" audio interface was called Session 8, it came with an early version of Cubase, which I sometimes used, because I already knew it Then Digidesign came out with a self-contained system, ProTools, with dedicated hardware, which cost so much that only big studios could afford it, and it didn't work with Session 8, dammit. I worked at a couple studios, so I became very familiar with Protools, but I would export stems to use in Cubase, or Cakewalk for mixing and mastering, as the VST instruments and effects were not available for ProTools. I think the only reason big studios still use it is because of the big investment they laid out for it. I used a criminally underrated 8-in/8-out 24/96 interface called EWS 88MT for my converter, it worked excellently for more than 15 years. (In fact, I only changed when PC manufacturers stopped making PCI slots on their mainboards.) For me and most of my colleagues, Protools always lagged far behind software like Cubase and Cakewalk, Logic, (there was a PC version before Apple bought it) Magix Samplitude, and others, as Digidesign/AVID didn't see the need to address the evolution of VSTs in recording software until it was far too late. In fact, they've only begun to catch up with Pro Tools Native, but still have far to go. As for the "subscription model" I will never agree to never-ending payments for something that, after I "buy" it, still don't own outright, and can't use wherever and however I want. AVID, ADOBE, Microsoft 365, Cubase, Reason, etc., none of those "dongled money pits" will ever see my system. Now I use Cakewalk by Bandlab (free!) and Magix Sequoia (very expensive, but good), and for film scoring, ADR, and sound effects, I use the Fairlight section of Davinci Resolve. I do just fine with what I have.

I've never been a pro-tooler. I started with a Roberts 2 track in the early 60's that would do sound on sound and still be in sync. I graduated eventually to a teac 4 track and a Revox 2 track for the mix. About 1985 or 6 I went to a Tascom 388, 8 tracks on quarter inch tape, but by then you could sink midi to one channel via smpte. Still no computers fast enough or affordable for the common man for computer music to be a threat. I then went to the Alesis 8 track digital on vhs tape with 3 synced together. 24 tracks! Heaven. Now the computers are starting to raise their heads but not a serious threat just yet. But then I started using Cakewalk as my sepuencer, did not use the audio yet, latency still an issue. But I chose to go with Cakewalk because I don't think pro tools was a thing at that point and Cakewalk used the most bits in its sound engine. But then early 2000's I got a computer on steroids for the time and Cakewalk had solved some of the latency issues, at least enough that It never was an issue for me. I then got a Yam DM 2000 board with all cards installed and the vu meter add on. Started recording everything in Cakewalk. Sounded great! No more smpte. Midi and audio co-existed in the software. Hamerfall interface with lightwires and we had a dream 48 tracks. Cakewalk always did what I needed it to do, sounded great and I already knew how to use it by the time pro tools became a thing. So I never changed. But I can assure you, when these companies start the subscription thing? I'm outta there. Oh, and did I mention that Cakewalk is now free? And I still love it! There are too many good solutions to have to put up with that, and all those work arounds you talked about? I would not have put up with that long at all. Granted I do have a very good computer, but I don't have the issues you spoke of at all and I use plenty of plugs. The one's that are labor intensive for the CPU, just freeze the track once you're finished with it. All of that to say this, almost all of the software is so good sound wise now that it's more up to whose producing, or playing on a session than what software you use. If you know how to do tracks, you can do them in your living room if you just listen to what you are doing and adjust accordingly. It's far more important for the sound going in to be good and arranged properly than whether you're using a stratospheric sampling rate etc. The magic these days, since most stuff now is quite good, is not the equipment or software so much as the imagination and the ears. I don't blame you at all for leaving pro tools. If you have a studio your business will come from you getting the client a good sound. Your reputation in that regard will speak volumes more than the software you use.

With that being said try as many as you like till your comfortable with one but you won’t master any overnight. Take your time to learn a little at a time and before you know it you will be comfortable using it👍🏾

Not surprising that it bears similarities to Cubase as it was designed by two former Steinberg designers.

I was on Pro Tools from the very early Digidesign days. Always shelling out huge amounts of money to be in a closed system. The I was an endorser (during my Guitar Hero days) and that made me surrender my authorizations. Got really tired of pleading my case each year and having it time bomb out on a specific date. Then subscriptions came out and I move to Logic for a short while before finally settling on Studio One about 6 years ago, and have never been happier. Just incredible software and it just works. And it works fast. I'm with you!

I've been using Pro tools since version 5. I have a computer with 32 plus gigs of RAM, over 10 cores , Pro tools still finds a way to slow my machine down. I still use Pro Tools everyday because of the sessions that I get. I do have a Perpetual license for Pro Tools, This will be the last year I would pay for the update plan. I own Reaper and Studio one pro 4. I ditched my Avid artist surface, got myself a fader port 8 and I'm loving it.

I remember having to make a decision between Steinberg Cubase and Pro Tools around 2010 and went with the more comprehensive, creator of VST, better price and student discount = Cubase. Now I’ll be using Steinberg Nuendo for mixing and recording vocals and I’ve added Akai Force for making beats and I’m straight with that!!

100% agree, I came into the game 20 years ago & used whatever I could get my hands on. Got good at mixing & making music! Well I decided to go to school for taking my skills to more proper & precision based levels… years ago there were no such things as tutorials for the average person… KZbin was new. So school was the way, I was basically insulted for using Nuendo & btw graduated top of my class on protools… but swiftly jumped back into Nuendo haha. I loved the feel & was more at home on it. Eventually Cubase caught up & is insanely good… so I jumped over to it. Protools in my opinion is a money game of prestige… yes its in a lot of studios. Worth knowing, but at the end of the day it’s an over priced DAW with higher prices to run the same 3rd party plugins everything else runs cheaper “unless that’s changed” I’m not in this game to get ripped… I’m in it to make music & deliver great work, I do just fine with my rig.

I was trained in Pro Tools in 2016 and was certified as certified user. I always likedPro tools but got way too expensive for my home Studio. It probably works great for people getting paid as an Audio Engineer. I now have Logic Pro X for a one time $200 cost.

Well said. I do agree with all the points you have made. I started using Pro Tools from the very early versions from Digidesign (Sound Designer) and yes it has evolved over a long time but so have other DAWs. Honestly as the years went by I personally felt they were losing touch with the creative side of users and more geared toward a money making attitude. Studio One is the DAW of choice for me today. I have not looked back from I was introduced to it (Version 2) and like you I'm still at version 4. As Audio Engineer/Producer if it work perfect and I'm getting the results, then I don't see a need to upgrade unless its absolutely necessary. Remember all these manufacturers are in this to make money, and thats ok, but people like us just want to create and be effective and efficient with our creations/music. Studio One simply works, its easy to learn and it makes perfect sense. I'm not in support of this subscription direction. I believe if I pay for it, its mine. I like to be in control. Further more, here in Jamaica 🇯🇲 internet reliability be an issue at times and I'm sure other countries may have similar internet issues too. I'm not prepared to have my creative skills and work be hanging on the mercies of internet connections. When a vibe is lost, its gone forever. Some things are just spontaneous. I'm just hoping Personus don't adopt that in the coming future. Great video and very encouraging. Blessings 🙏🏽🇯🇲 Respect

Hi mate. I used analog gear for the first 20 years of my career and then when I moved into the digital world I looked at a number of daws of the time, tools included. Thanks to a friend who introduced me to his software I found Samplitude. I have been using it for just on 20 years now and it’s ideal for me as It feels almost analog in is work flow. The sound quality is incredible, transparent and the software very flexible. I highly recommend it to anyone else looking to move to another daw. Cheers.

In film school (2004) I trained on Avid and shortly after Final Cut Pro started to become prominent. At the time I was doing my music recording to 4 track tape, but by the time 2006 came around I sold my MPC, Korg MS2000, and Groove boxes to buy the first MacBook Pro loaded with Final Cut Pro. I then went out and bought Pro Tools with the MBox and the MPD24/Oxygen 49 controllers. I thought I was set, but I could not even get with Protools. It just didn’t make sense. The good news is that Pro Tools came with a copy of Reason 3.0 adapted . I ended up using Reason for every synth a beat wise and recording with Sound Track Pro. I made a lot of songs that way, and Sound Track Pro was like a music Daw for me even though it wasn’t intended to be. I still recorded and importanted stuff from Reason with it. But once Reason Made Record I went full in. Point is till this day I still use Reason 10. I tried Ableton, and a few other DAWs but nothing else but Reason speaks my language. Now I got all the hardware synths, samplers, my heart desires all multitracked into Reason and I forgot all about Pro Tools until I seen this video.

I also went to Fulllsail and was inducted into the Avid ecosystem myself. Pro Tools is simply years behind the curve of Reaper. Pro Tools was made to transition boomer engineers from mixing consoles to DAW. Because of this PT tries to emulate a mixing desk workflow. Reaper on the other hand is built from the ground up to be Digital and is much more flexible as a result.

Protocol was not a Mac only system. I have had Pro Tools all the way from Protools 5 with my 001, then MBox, 002, 003 and then dumped it for Studio One in 2011. Before it was Pro Tools it was Sound Designer and then Sound Tools. It was first developed back in 1986 or 1985. I am was a Pro Tools advocate until 2012! Studio One user ever since.

I was forced to use it in college and I hated it. Too many crashes and issues. I preferred to use Logic and Live but they both have detriments for Audio Engineers and IMO, are much better as production tools. I finally found complete satisfaction in Presonus Studio One. It's still important to be proficient on Pro Tools but if I have to use it, I just use it for the initial recordings (stems) and take them all and actually mix it all at home on Studio One.

Been using different daws for almost 20 years. I downloaded protools first a few years ago to check it out and it was way too complicated. Almost immediately deleted it. I don’t like overcomplicated things. Got Studio One 5 recently and fell in love with it immediately. Bought the professional version and am very happy with my purchase. The designers did a great job.

Awesome video. Much appreciated. I've used pretty much every DAW, (n-track, ProTools, Nuendo/Cubase, FL Studio, Studio One), but I landed on Ableton Live and within a year became a power user, and I can't imagine a better DAW for ME. I just love the flexibility of it, and the audio editing capabilities. But, I don't throw shade on the others. I have a lot of love for Studio One, and even Bitwig is pretty good too. I've heard great things about Reaper, too.

Great video! I've used many of the DAWs, Sonar, Reason, Fruity, Reaper. Now I use Ableton if I am using MIDI and ProTools for the acoustic stuff. ProTools cannot get complex MIDI right. ProTools for the most part, caters to the big studios. Just rebuilt my whole studio with new 11K chip PC, getting everything reloaded but ProTools making it real hard to find product keys and downloads. They do not want to sell you a perpetual license and if you buy one, never change computers, you'll have to rebuy. Love Abelton, my choice.

I've tried Ableton, several years ago, and absolutely hated it. I've been using FL Studio for about 15 years, and I still use it today for making beats, and I mix them in Pro Tools. For recording vocals and mixing, I jump straight to Pro Tools. I've only used Pro Tools for a little over a year, but I personally find it superior and even enjoyable for everything I do except actually making beats.

I tried many DAWs. I tried Sonar. I didn't like it. I stayed with Sony acid music studio, magix music maker 2014, LMMS, and 2 others that I can't remember right now. They are not complicated, and they never crash on me. I bought everything on sale less than 20 dollars for each. It was the best investment for me. I wanted to produce music not get stuck trying to learn complicated knobs. I know what you mean. I didn't want to buy new things either. I got 47 synths for free. I made sure these DAWs accepted them to work within, or else I wouldn't download any of them. I'm very satisfied with what I got now.

I remember the digi 001 craze around 2002ish. We had a G3, it sounded great, had a bunch of great plugins but would stop after about 3 plugins. I had a new Dell nearby (for basic computing tasks). I decided to buy an Echo Layla 24 and Sonar(now Bandlab Cakewalk). I found I was able to mix a complete song without any major CPU hits using a bunch of Plugins (that sold me off of Pro Tools right there). Around the same time, we would go to a big studio with a full blown Pro Tools setup (10s of thousands of dollars) with an engineer with major label credits. We were talking and he said he was starting to get a bunch of projects were people were using Fruityloops. He said he was amazed at how good the projects was sounding. He actually seemed a bit concerned.

It’s called an iLok. Yeah I totally understand what you’re saying. My biggest reason why I transitioned out of Pro Tools into Logic Pro X is because of compatibility issues after I upgraded to a brand new iMac and the RIDICULOUS Subscription-based format. I found out that all of these new DAWs are pretty much the same quality-wise. The only difference is where the editing tools and buttons are located that you’ll eventually learn and get used to. In the end, it’s all about personal preference and your ability and recording techniques that will prevail. Great video!

I went from Pro Tools (started 2004) to Cubase when Cubase 9 came out, then when 9.5 came out I was totally convinced. The main reason being Avid are milking the engine, it's use of multi-cores was all over the place, we sometimes had to set affinity in the task manager to force Pro Tools to use certain cores. It seems Avid is now all about the subscription, dropping the odd update and free plugin to keep people attached while the engine is falling apart :)

Thanks for sharing your experience. No disrespect to those who use and love Pro Tools; I’ve never been a fan due to the rigid requirements and expense. I’ve been a Cubase/Nuendo user for decades now and have never experienced the issues I’m hearing from former and current users of Avid Pro Tools eco system. I recently decided to expand my horizons and offer mixing services so I invested in Pro Tools 2022.10 for all the reasons you mentioned (industry standard, still many believe it’s the only professional grade DAW, etc) but oh goodness, it was literally a significant step backwards. This is something I’d suspected for a while. I wish you all the best with your new DAW and I’m pleased to see you’ve been enlightened.
