Күн бұрын

As I approach my late 20s, I find myself constantly swimming in thoughts about my future. The anxiety I feel is amplified by how monumental this period was for my parents: At 26, they left behind their community in Taiwan in pursuit of a better life for themselves and their children in America. I’m now the same age, and I can think of little that could convince me to uproot my life and seek opportunity in a faraway place.
Maybe that’s the single greatest privilege of my life - because of my parents’ sacrifice, my biggest challenges lie in navigating my sense of identity, fulfillment and the pursuit of my own dream of being a filmmaker, the sort of dream they never had the luxury of having.
In the short documentary above, I revisit a more innocent time in my life: middle school in Fremont, Calif. Flipping through my yearbook made me curious about how old friends who signed “H.A.G.S.” (Have A Good Summer) and doodled Sharpie penises were handling adulthood and the uncertainty about the future - so I decided to call them and find out.
Director's statement from Sean Wang ( / seanswang .

I bet this video really hits different for all those people who graduated high school, or college during 2020. I'm just about to finish my first year at college. The sense of progression I'm feeling is so strange, I know I'm moving forward, but it also feels still and silent. It's weird knowing all my peers and friends are moving along, and getting out there, but I never really got to say bye to them. I keep forgetting I never got proper closure for my high school years. Life is just moving so fast, and college work is just engulfing me, which makes it pretty hard to reflect on my last year at high school. Not to mention I'll be moving to campus this fall. I hope I get to say bye to my friends and teachers this time before I move.

Omg same. I also had to graduate virtually. I thought it was gonna br me and my friends getting recognition for the hard work that we did. An official goodbye to high school. And now im in college, and it sucks. Like i think to myself that there is more to this. Luckily im now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Our governor have already ordered vaccines that includes college students as the priority. I just hope that i will experience more of this life sooner. I honestly cant wait!

Just watched Didi and to find this video two days later. It’s really cool to see your thoughts and goals from that time and see now how far you’ve come in pursuing that dream! I feel like I got a snapshot of three different points in your life. But your movie Didi was such a moving film! As someone who grew up during that time and around skaters I feel like your movie captured so much of the essence of growing up in that time, the dialogue, the events. And as someone whose mom is a Chinese immigrant. It’s amazing to see so many similar experiences portrayed in film and to feel represented on the big screen. I wish you all the best! Keep up the great work!

I was thinking about this the other day when I heard the song "Don't you forget about me". When you hear that song in high school you feel it so intensely, you don't want to forget or be forgotten. In middle age, we've all moved on. Sort of. Something about teenage years always stays with us, the intensity of feelings. How many of us remember each other? Probably most of us.

You are my son's age. But I remember being 24 (when I met his dad) and how "adult" I thought I was/should be. At 59, I realize how much I had to learn, just by living my life. It's an ongoing lesson. (And every time I dust the bookshelves in my bedroom, which isn't often enough, I stop and go through my yearbook. Wow.)

I'm the kind of person always thinking about the past. And one thing I really regret not doing was buying middle school year books. Missed out all three years. Well I thought it was too expensive and as a result didn't bother asking my parents. Thinking oh next year.. and didn't bother. At the time I didn't care about photos or memories. And guess what I'm into photography now how ironic? And I know everyone is into photography now but I really got serious during the myspace era (so you know it's been some time) and buying my own pro DSLR at the time. But yeah it's crazy how time flies. I'm 31 now. I grew up in SF, and I'm living in France now. If I only had gotten into photography earlier there's so much great and bad moment about the city by the bay I've experienced.

I also just turned 26. Thoughts about the future and the past have been filling my mind lately. Can’t help but think where the time has gone, but also what’s going to happen next. It’s scary to say the least, but it’s comforting knowing that we were all just once kids and we’re all trying to figure it out.

I love this video. I just graduated from college in April and I am trying to find my way and experience life and find a job all at the same time. It is a weird feeling because I do see all of my eighth grade or high school friends having kids or getting married and I feel so behind in life. I know that having a family does not mean that you are fulfilling life but it just makes me feel a little uncertain of where I am if that makes. Anyway amazing video.
