Why I own a John Deere 110 and not a skid steer

I bought a backhoe for one big reason. I’m a one man operation. I needed something I could excavate, grade, and move material with one machine that I can fit on one trailer. If I had to haul a mini excavator and a skid steer, I would have to make two trips to get my equipment out there. I don’t have a CDL and am limited to about 16,000 lbs of trailering weight. My backhoe has an 8 ft dig depth on an Ag type tractor. It’s enclosed and has heat and A/C. In Texas A/C is nice! I like the set up so much I’m debating on getting a Kubota M62 TLB with the 14 ft hoe. Down side is the M62 doesn’t have a cab and aftermarket cabs only have heat. I couldn’t imagine stepping up to a machine like that with 14 feet of reach. It would be awesome and I wouldn’t have to get on and off my tractor to use the hoe. I also could use a skid steer and there are times when that would do best. I’m not made of money so I may have to give up something. All I really need my Ag Tractor for that the M62 can’t do is provide me an enclosed cab when I’m bush hogging or spraying. So ideally I want to sell my Ag Tractor/backhoe and have a skid steer for loader work, bush hogging and spraying and have an M62 TLB when a TLB is the only way to go. I also have a Case 450 track loader for the really big stuff. Won’t ever sell that. In short, if I could only have one, a TLB, be it commercial type or Ag type over a skid steer all day long. If I was in the position to have a second machine, a skid steer would be my next purchase.

You can adjust the roll out on the Ehydro to dial in the hydro pedal lag. Take a look in the maintenance manual for instructions

I had one of those for years and loved it!! One thing I would change is I wish it had 50hp. On our mountains up here, it would slow it down pretty good hauling material up the hills. It is definitely much more versatile than a skidsteer, but can't lift nearly as much. I see myself owning one again someday lol

Thanks for this video. I'm looking to get some land, do some forestry and lumber milling and maybe build a camp. Right now I'm trying to figure out what I need as opposed to want. On the used market, it looks like a 4wd tractor with a loader is going to be about $25k, where a wheeled skid steer is about $15k. Attachments are more expensive for a skid steer, but maybe I only really need 2 or 3 to get started,

Skid steers are lower profile and have great turning radius which is beneficial in a warehouse or tight location. Down side of a skid steer is repairing them or needing forks or bucket half way up and trying to climb out to do a one man operation. I'd stick with what you have as long as you can. The rare occasion that you just have to have a skid steer, rent one.

I’m looking into buying a small tractor myself that will take a backhoe hookup. What I’m looking at is a 1025R Deere tractor with a 260 backhoe. I’m hoping it will be just as beneficial to me for my landscape and grading work as this machine has been to you with your work. Nice video.

Everyone has their own thoughts and opinions and mine is that I didn't think that I really needed a skid steer but bought one anyway just because I got a good deal on it and after owning one for many years there's no way that I could ever live without one. Now as far as a backhoe is concerned, you can actually buy both a skid steer and a mini excavator for the price of a backhoe and with 2 machines is twice the income if running them both at the same time granted you'd need another guy but I personally will never go back to a backhoe. As far as attachments if you can think of it or even imagine it they make it for a skid steer. Just my thoughts about the experiences that I've had with my business and what works for one person won't necessarily work for another person. Great video!!!

The TLB110 was a great marketing idea by Deere. One unit instead of a skid and a mini. Problem is sales were low and parts sales were even lower, thus making this tractor not profitable enough to continue production. It is a heavy duty version of the ag 4720. Great review. BTW ~ don't sell it , you will have sellers remorse .

I wish all John Deere tractors had skid steer attach as a standard feature. Their proprietary system isn’t bad, but connecting to an attachment has become difficult as the dump cylinders don’t move at the same rate. And the attacher are only linked at the pivot point so you really have to mess around to get that attachment on. It was fine brand new, but after a few years it’s difficult.

They are fine for landscaping and dirt, but we have too much Rock in our area. One customer bought one and used it like he would a 310E and tore it up.

I have a 110... have owned it for around 4 or 5 years. I have a Harley rake for it and love it, I always said skid loaders are for the birds, mostly meaning the tired verisons... well I made the jump about a month ago to a tracked bobcat t770 and a Harley rake for it and I'm here to tell you that it is so much superior then the 110 in moving dirt, working in wet conditions, strength, speed, and agility that there is no comparison... that being said there are no plans in my future to get rid of the 110 but my outlook on a skidloader vs my beloved 110 have changed more then I'd care to admit.

In response to the sluggish pedal feel, If the machine has a loadmatch switch you need to turn it off. It is to keep the machine from stalling when you go into a pile of dirt. I have a 3320 from 2005 and with loadmatch turned on it feels like there is a delay when you step on the pedal. with it off it moves instantly. You can stall the machine with it off, but it drives so much better.

@@DirtPerfect Your machine may be different. I am not talking about the pedal delay settings(I think the number settings are 1-9). It is just an on off switch on the 3320 next to the steering wheel. It is like having traction control on off switch. Again my 3320 is an 05 and yours might be completely different. If that switch is on it does exactly what you describe.

You can actually get a three point quick attach to use the tractor attachments on the skid steer. You can even get it with the PTO!

The skid steer definitely will not replace a tractor with a PTO. We have the skids and we still keep our 125Hp front wheel assist because it is so versatile

they both have their place they both have advantages and disadvantages , you get and use what is best suited to your own needs is how i look at anything like this. i like skid steers but i will also say they are absolute back breakers when using for any amount of time and at least with the big tyres you negate a good amount of the shocks vibrations. which is just one advantage and disadvantage to each piece of equipment

also i would honestly wait a little while longer before looking into buying anything, i really do see a recession coming in the next 12 to 18 months and i hate to see people struggle but some will always come out bad from such times, if you wait it out i have no doubt you will be alel to pick up something at a vastly reduced price even from prices you might see around at the moment just because there will be someone who will sell something just to get some money to keep themselves afloat or to clear a debt whatever the reason things do get sold dirt cheap.

Great video Personally I love backhoes we do a lot of utility cable work so they work fine for that. We also have 9 mini excavators but thats just because they are so much eaiser to tow around than a backhoe.

Yeah if already set up for 3 point attachments, you might as well stay with the 110. I couldn't be without my track skid steer. Just like your situation, I have a bunch of attachments for it. If you do get a skid steer, stay with John Deere. I love mine and so do a lot of other people who have them.

Great review and opinion video. Makes sense to utilize the attachments you already have and rarely use. I agree with your travel speed example, I have a 2-speed skid steer and it has a top speed of 8+ MPH. Cat B252 B2 (2009 w/1200 hours) Have a JD 410 TLB as well, and completely agree with your point of the things each machine is better at. just about to pull the trigger on a backhoe, a skid steer cant do half the shit a backhoe can. (i know this isnt exactly a backhoe but its the same platform as one ) you cant pick stuff up high you cant load a set of 10 ft disks on a gooseneck, you cant move dirt or material as fast as you can with a bigger tractor, a skid ster is cheaper which is great if youre a home contractor in tight spaces but a bigger machine is better overall. skid steers lifting height is what sucks, especially for us guys that like to pick junk up with chains. with the backhoe boom you can lift up whatever you want 10 ft in the air if u wanted to. kinda sucks when u want to load a trailer and you cant chain up a piece of junk (use your imagination) and your skid steer cant lift it high enough. heh

I have a 110 also, my pedals don't jump or take 3 secs to respond at all. Very fluid as they are depressed actually. Must be a pot that is sticky and out of adjustment.

Very crisp through out forward and reverse. Zero lag.. That's what I had always remembered. But I have read reports like yours. Obviously this aren't old school physical linkage anymore, there must be a pot that sends a signal. There has to be a way of fixing this. I'll keep my eye out for a resolution. Great video,BTW.
