I also have the exact same bass and it is by far the best playing instrument I've ever had. Although I rarely use the low B, I'd be lost without the high C. Having access to those notes has really opened my playing. I have a background in jazz and that C string allows me to break out my chordal playing.

Exactly why I'm playing more 6 string. More notes under my fingers in any given position = more economy of motion and less vertical movement. After spending time on my 6, I honestly believe that 4 string is more difficult for me. I visualize patters much easier on a 6 string. - and don't need to stray too far from the root note, as you point out. The chords are just an added bonus to expand musical expression. BTW, my 6 string is a Dingwall. I think that makes it even easier because of the even string tension and more (for me) ergonomic frets. Plus I have that mosterous 37" b string at my disposal. together with a sweet sounding 33" C.
@BooWilson16 жыл бұрын
Right on, Thanks for sharing and for watching. I hear great things about Dingwall instruments. Only tested a couple. Cheers

I just got my 6 string yesterday. I only recently returned to music and after 35 yrs and getting used to the 4 string again, this 6 string is a vast ocean of learning for me. From string spacing to fret location, it's a bit overwhelming at the moment. I hadn't considered what you mentioned with the middle of the neck being less tight than the top frets, great point.

You make some really great points, my man! The whole "I like the more economical positions a 6 string bass offers in a given position." I've been a guitarists for 10 years, and just recently picked up a 4-string bass over the summer. I enjoy the instrument quite a bit, but I would think a 5-string may be more suited for me in the regards of having a Low E-G root note higher up on the finger board in certain applications.

You kind of touch on the reason I want a 6-string bass -- comfort. For you, it's about facility and location of notes, as you explain quite well here. For me, it's as simple as neck comfort. It doesn't matter if it's Spector, Ibanez, Peavey, etc....if it's a six-string, it's like 2"-plus at the nut, and for my hands that feels awesome. Your point about "authenticity" is well made also. Inspiring video.
@BooWilson17 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I would also have to agree that the feel of the neck on a six is nice. Especially for me since I have pretty large hands. Cheers

Yeah, sure. Been thinking about this video all day at my job, and now that I'm home, next bass is a six. I LOVE Carol Kaye. I LOVE Jamerson, Wooten, etc. I've tried. I've REALLY tried with 4's and 5's. In my local shop, I had the sales guy pull down a Fender P MIM, 1.75" (old-school C neck), a DELICIOUS Ibby 5er, and a Spector Legend 6. NOT comparing for tone, etc, as these are quite different basses, obviously....but the neck of the Legend was just IT - same with EVERY 6 I've explored, however briefly. When I'm at a point I wanna give up playing, I always forget about the COMFORT of a 6; I can DEAL with weight (SLINGER STRAPS are excellent). Sometimes ya just gotta learn the hard way what is YOUR ax...part of the beauty of BEING a player to begin with!! LOL
@tracywilkinson18208 жыл бұрын
You're a good player man. Nice vid, you make good points. I play a 6 for pretty much the same reason, when I was a working cat playing side man gigs the 6 gave me flexibility and ease playing patterns from the middle of the neck. I dragged a Carvin around for years, just bought a Modulus 6 and I'm having a blast with it. I'm not by any means a soloist or huge chord guy- I always tell new players "there is no money above the 12th fret". Above all, like you say, have fun and play what feels right for YOU. Peace
@BooWilson18 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tracy, glad you like the video. Super jealous you have a modulus. In fact I have always been interested in carvins too. But I love Phil Lesh and Mike Gordon and so I have always wanted a modulus.

The thing is ibanez is pretty easy to play. They are among the most playable basses , even 6 string basses. But if you take a 6 strings with thr same string spacing of 4 strings basses, it is really hard to play, in particular way if you have to mute the low B.

Just caught your video, and it's great! I graduated to a 6 several years ago for a couple of songs in a band I was with, mainly for one run from the 24th fret on the C-string to the 1st fret on the B. I ended up using the high end for a couple of others. I had an Ibanez 506 and had trouble reaching that highest fret, and finally ended up with a Peavey Grind passive six. I've been thinking about a 7-string, with the upper six tuned like a guitar. To that end I got a second Peavey cheap and put on lighter strings, with guitar tuning, and it's a heck of a lot of fun!

Thanks a lot for the video. I was just surfing randomly investigating what 6-string bass and I came across this, and I can say I've never seen such a good speech and "philosophical interpretation" of a 6-string bass. I particularly myself was looking into it cause I wanted to take a different approach, I've already been playing a 4-string for about 2 years now - but what I'm mostly interested is in exactly as you said, being creative - I want to try to be different and find my own ways and sounds; also because it seems exotic to me, and in some points even more comfortable. The only thing that's torturing my mind is, how good is slap bass in a 6-string bass? Cause I've had several annoyances when trying a 6-string, like the low B ringin' randomly and so on that I don't know how to deal with; which I think will become a problem in the future if I purchase a 6-string, and if you know about this I'd appreciate if you had some tips on it! :) Once again, thanks a lot for the video - you put it in a very nice view and explained it very well, just like if Extended Range Basses were self-esteem things ha-ha, good psycholgist! Thanks a lot, it was nice to watch, definitely deserve more views and subscriptions than you currently have, keep it up!! Greetings from Argentina, Nicholas.

Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. It takes a little while to get used to muting unwanted ringing when you play slap on a 6 string but it is not that big of an issue for me. I play quite a bit of slap on my 6 and I think you can totally get used to it.

I have an Ibanez 5-string bass. What do you think about those tuners? I am contemplating replacing the tuners. I think I might want a higher gear ratio so that I can get better precision when tuning. One more question if I may. What products do you like to use to clean and shine the bass? Will you use any kind of wax or oil?
@BooWilson12 жыл бұрын
I actually had a tuner fail that I replaced with a Gotoh I believe. Before that fail they had been mostly fine and the bass held tuning well, but the one I put on as a replacement seems to be higher quality. Probably be a nice upgrade if you can afford it. As for your other question I don't really clean my basses too much other than wiping them down with a towel. The finish on my SR506 doesn't really show any smudges or anything. I have scraped some of the hand gunk off the back of the neck over the years tho. With a plastic card.

Hey, just asking anyone, I am thinking of getting a six string and the one I found is extremely cheap so I am not burning a ton of money. I play almost all jazz by the way which is why i wanted the high C. I thought the six string neck was pretty comfortable but saw that a lot of people didn't agree, which made me sort of hold off on getting one. Do you think I should get a six string for jazz?
@lawrencegenereux85677 жыл бұрын
Cody Nakatsukasa It takes a little getting used to, but if your hand agility and hand size are average or better you should have no trouble getting comfortable with a six string bass. As far as it's applicability to jazz... the additional note range you can achieve in each position is applicable to all forms of music, so I'd say yes, it would be great for jazz. BTW, if you want to try something really intimidating, try a 7 string bass. It's like playing the deck of an aircraft carrier, but still manageable with practice.

I play a 6 string bass viola da gamba professionally - Renaissance and Baroque music, masters from IU, etc. I'm just getting into the electric world and just have put together people for a band (including Billy the Kid). I figure I totally know the 6 string keyboard I already play (with the 3rd in the middle D, G, C, E, a, d) but I'm sure there will be challenges. I have some guitar background, mostly classical and have played lute (which is more like playing with a pic) so any advice you have would be great. Thanks!

Nice video! Is it the Ibanez GSR 206B that you are playing? What do you think about it? I want a 6 string bass and in that price range there are 4 different options for me. The cheaper ones are the thomann 6-stringer (with smaller string spacing) and one from gear4music named chicago. Those are both under 180€. Then there is one, the SX SWB1 6, for about 350€. It looks really neck-heavy from the picture... And then there is the Ibanez GSR 206... Decisions, desicions.... I already own the Ibanez SR 305 and unfortunately it has its issues - some weird neck-bowing from and below the 5th fret and for my liking, the D and G-string are to high, but I didnt get it adjusted. Its playable okay now (since I filed the nut a bit and so on - I have no trustful luthier nearby, as far I know, so I do all my stuff DIY), but its not as good, as I wish it to be... and the lower "horn" of the body is a bit of annoying, since it hurts my tights a bit (its simply to long for the curve - and my body) Maybe you can share some thougts with me and give some advice. Thank you.

It would sound quite muddy due to the long scale length of the average bass.... get like a squier bass VI
@muddassirbahri4877 жыл бұрын
The long scale length would actually make the bass sound tighter since longer scale length=higher tension. If anything, it would make high notes a little less usable since they would sound very tinny. But it is easier to just get a Bass VI.
@joshstarkey88836 жыл бұрын
Deathrape2001 Most people prefer the sound of higher tension strings, it's not like you can't get lighter ones or short scale basses, they're just less popular. And yes you could fit 6 strings on a lot of bass necks, but a lot of people (especially slap players) like wider spacing. Also the spacing might be tighter than you think because the thickness of each string reduces the effective spacing.

I am selling six string as I play 5 string the most. But it is good bass for money , it has active 2 band eq and neck is good but narrow 16mm string spacing threw me off of it , low A0 on it sounds very good and other strings too, but it lacks on midrange growl and treble. Hi C is nice too, but i rarely find myself playing above 12th fret of G string. If you want a bass with a nice dark sound than it is the bass for you. It was good thing for me that I ventured in the world of extended range basses . I found that I like 5 string with the low B the most and I have nothing against playing our good ol domesticated 4 string.

John Klecker hey mate, definitely what you need to look into are the thicker gauges to keep good tension so the chord doesn't flop out. I personally say it does better to have the lower G# to give even more bottom and have some serious grind as long as the EQ cuts so it doesn't sound muddy.

Personally, I went with the six string bass. You've got more notes to mess around with, which just makes it more fun In general to play. Especially for a beginner to this instrument, it makes it more fun to mess around with and learn. Personally, I think it sounds better as well. The higher notes that you get really add to your playing experience. I've always been an extended range player, I started on an 8 string guitar as well, so I just sort of have an obsession with having more strings, but it makes it way more fun to mess around with. I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to like going into detail about this instrument, but so far I'm sold on this bass. Honestly, if I had a four string, I wouldn't be as motivated to play it. They make it a little more difficult to come up with some cool sounds. That's my opinion.

I play and enjoy both. I started out very early on a 4 string but my first good bass was a 5 string. I used to switch it up and string my 5 string with either the low B string or high C string depending on what I was playing at the time and what I felt like doing. But when I decided to upgrade to a new instrument I went with a 6 string to get the benefits of both. The 6 is a very fun instrument to play but I think a 4 string is just as fun in a different way. If you want to be able to explore more and cover more notes the 6 is a good option but as I mention in this video you really only get a handful of truly extra notes. They are fun to have tho. Let me know what you decide or if you have any other questions.

Can you play guitar chords on that bass? Just asking
@BooWilson18 жыл бұрын
its not tuned exactly like a guitar but you do have a lot more chord options on a 6 string bass than a 4 string.
@thrillaspirit6 жыл бұрын
Well... You can buy strings that begin with d-String gauge and tune it to e standard like a guitar actually
@Grumdot6 жыл бұрын
Yes. You just have to know enough music theory to construct the chord. (Check out Janek Gwizdala, he is a master at it.)

I definitely prefer the long extended range instruments too.

How harder is to play than 4 string? i mean physically not the extra notes composing and how about slapping is it much harder as the gap is smaller?
@BooWilson18 жыл бұрын
I don't consider it much harder than a 4 but it will take some getting used to. Left hand muting is helpful to prevent unwanted open string noise with all basses but probably more of an issue with 6 strings. Bigger neck might be an issue if you have small hands but that wasn't an issue for me.

k i see tnx am considering to buy 5 or 6 string, i should buy 5 string in the first place but i find ibanez sr500 really cheap so i couldn't resist that one, its a great bass. Is that ibanez sr506? also how many basses do you have?
@BooWilson18 жыл бұрын
Yes SR506 but its about 10 years old. I really only play the 6 in this video and a 1984 Ibanez Roadstar that is essentially a P bass copy made in Japan. I have a rig rundown here on this channel if you would like more info on all of my current gigging gear. Cheers

I have the same bass... It sounds great for the price, but you really have to love active pickups. It eats 9v batteries like crazy.

A 6-string bass is the limit of my reach. Anything wider that that interferes with my playing too much. Basically, I play one because a bass guitar is a type of guitar; it just seems silly to me that a bass guitar would have less than 6 strings.

@@BooWilson1 I have the exact same bass. I haven't played my PBass in years. I also own a Ken Smith six string among others. I agree with your assessment of the benefits of the six string. I also agree with the "play what you want to play" philosophy. I had one smart alec guitar player once ask me, "...do you also have a twelve string bass?...lol..." I told him, "not yet, but any day now, soon as I can find the right luthier to put it together for me!" That's the way bass players roll.🎸
