I play a 4 string fretless but respect anyone that sounds good on any kind of bass. Ive tried 5 and 6 string basses but I didnt feel comfortable. I play chords and write on 4 string and I sort of like the idea of trying to get as much as I can with less. I also find the deeper tones on a 4 beautiful. But thats my prefrence and to each his own.
@Watermelon_Man Жыл бұрын
I’m not saying you’re wrong to like it, but you can get deeper tones on a 5 string than a 4 string. That’s just facts, and you have access to all of the same tones that are on a 4 string on both of the higher string counts because the same strings are still there. Again, not trying to say your preference is wrong, but some of your justifications were.

Played 4 string from '84-2000, switched to 5 from 2000-2023 then heard someone play a 5 tuned e,a,d,g,c , so I tried it and loved it so much, but missed having the B, so recently purchased my first 6 and can honestly say, my creativity level has grown tremendously over the short period of time I've had it. I love it and regret not doing it years ago. I am also a music creator and highly recommend it to any bass player. I always thought six string was for jazz, soloists. I am not a soloist, but enjoy it for the chords. It's also great, because now I don't have to have a guitarist to accompany me.

After playing a 4 string for a couple of decades, I added a 6 string and found the two biggest challenges to be: • coming up with a strategy for muting (it was more challenging than I’d anticipated and VERY tough to get right for about the first month!) • figuring out what note I was playing at any given time because my brain constantly reverted to thinking of the B string as if it was the E string. (Adding the high C was a breeze to get used to but correctly identifying the notes on that low B on the fly was a bitch!)

One of the reasons I like the 6 string bass is that there's less "acrobatics" involved with certain solo runs where I can stay a lot more in the middle of the fretboard. I have average sized fingers so there's a certain level of comfort with using this technique. And I don't use the six string basses that I own for absolutely everything, as they aren't always necessary depending on the song ... but they are my "go-to" basses for the most part. Great video!

Incidentally, he told me it saved him once coz he sold it to fund his wedding budget 😳😂 I'm on a 5 Strings Headless, though I wouldn't mind a 6, and I'm thinking about it. I'm not a soloist really, I'm more of a finger style only player. I'm getting to know more about the 5, by tuning it differently to get even lower notes than the B. I'm enjoying the experience/experiment. I wouldn't mind having a 6 though, as an option. Heck, Anthony Jackson is my GOAT 😎

I started playing bass with a four-string bass and granted that is what most people start off with but I never really thought about going into a 6 bass because in the styles of music that I play, especially as a non-soloist bassist; I just needed the bass for more groove and that is why I switch from a four-string to a five-string bass. As I improve with my technique and branching out into more of a soloist, I still have thoughts about purchasing a 6 six but a lot of my favorite soloist as a bassist like Hadrian Feraud or Richard Bona play five-string bass too so I will hold off on getting 6 string for a little bit long but I'll get one eventually.

The band I play in is a dual bass metalcore band(no guitar). My job in the bass is the prove the “normal” bass duties while simultaneously playing the role a rhythm guitar player would do. The other bass player play the fourth string that is distorted. He also provides some traditional baselines but also fills in that space a lead guitar player would normally do. For me playing the six string allows me to write parts that better suit the songs. I also enjoy the added range. In addition with the band I play and the other bass player is tune to standard I am tuned to E0 for that extra low kick in the pants. I’ve tried that tuning in a fourth string and in a five string and for whatever reason it just doesn’t seem to work as well.

Great vid man! Still highly relevant a couple years later. Grabbing a 6 string this month coming. Never much played a 4. Started on 5 and can't give up that B. I like the sound and also being able to stay in the box more often rather than all the running around. I don't feel 6 will be to much of a change except the width of the neck of course. This will be a multi-scale which MIGHT take a little getting used to. I have been a keyboard (synth/piano) player for near 60 years but only played bass a year or so (trying to play serious rather than just goofing around). It has been an absolute blast and I seem to picking up fairly fast. Of course I practice several hours a week (near 20) and I have years of music theory behind me that helps. Can't wait to jam on that 6. Thx for the video, even more pumped than before! "Chuck"

Hi Jermaine! I started playing with the 4 strings bass like most people. I use my bass for basic exercices and by playing the SEBENE rythm wich is a typical rythm we use to play in my home (I am from Kongo-Kinshasa). The first reason why I play the 6 string bass is : I love Gospel music very much. I saw most Gospel bass player using the 5&6 strings basses, so I decided to learn about thoses basses. I can't say I was upset by discovering the 5&6 string basses. In the end of 2013, I discovered the video of Donnie McClurkin and his bassiste, this is what made me to chose my actual bass (I ow an Ibanez BTB676) and I am planning to buy another 6 string.

@@andrephanor8479 I know that Ibanez makes several bass models, but I prefer the BTB series for 2 reasons. The first reason wich made me buy this bass is his esthetic look. I fall in love with it without trying the model in a music shop. I like the monorail bridge and the 3 band EQ of the BTB with BARTOLINI pickups and the medium contour. The second reason is the ergonomic. Most of 5&6 strings bass of BTB series have a 35" inch scale, wich gives more clarity to the low B string. It has a wide and huge neck with a good string spacing, wich is good for the Slap technic. I don't have issues with it because my hands are big enough to play that bass although I am a tall girl, 😁😁😁. The bass is massive and heavy, so I bought a large leather strap for it.

I own a 4 string 2 5s and a 6. I feel most at home on a 5. That gospel culture is real and I also detune to Bb. I feel restricted at times on the 4 because I like to do a lot of voice impersonation on bass and depending on what key the song is in you can run out of real estate on a 4. I got the 6 for chording. But overall playing I find that I do not like how thin that last string is. Plus if they real get to the shouting I find I cramp on the 6. The 5 gives me everything although agin I can run into some limitations when wanting to chord a higher voicing or get a higher range on voicings but 98% of what I need I can get out of my 5s.

Jermaine Morgan - Bass Lessons I also like 6 string and I would use it all the time but for me, weight has always been an issue. More importantly, balance. I’ve played more basses than most and I’ve played some with nasty neck dive and that just takes all the fun out of playing for me. What I’d ultimately like to have is something like Daniele Camarda’s 6 string. 31 inch scale with good balance and not a ton of neck dive. 3 inches worth of wood makes a big difference in weight and balance. But it looks like you’ve found something that works for you. I noticed immediately that there’s no wasted space along the length of the bass which you don’t find on a lot of basses. The whole scale length is the whole bass, no extra wood behind the bridge. Looks like an excellent instrument.

My 6 string Ibanez resonates so much that I usually play it unplugged when I practice lol. I’ guessing it’s because there’s so much more wood than my other basses. But my normal 4 string and short scale sound dead if they’re not plugged in. Also, I’ve gotten so accustomed to the jumbo frets, that anything smaller than a 6 feels a little too cramped. I would advise you to try a 6 string bass befor buying it. If you have small hands, forget about it.

People who limit themselves to only for string bass guitar because they don't want to work a wider range fretboard and make music 😊

LOL...........Its 10th Aug 2021 when Im seeing this video, but it'll be about a year before I venture into 6 string territory. Im having issues with the gap between strings in terms of a 5 string to a 4 string. I try licks on the 4 string 1st then try it of the 5 string. I find it easier in the 5 string.......

IMO everyone should start on a 4 and get the fundamentals down. Friend had a gig and his only bass, a 5 string, was in the shop for an emergency repair. He asked if I could take the gig last minute, I offered to let him use my 4, and he said in all seriousness he couldnt play a 4 string, he learned on a 5 and never touched anything else. Know the fundamentals before you worry about the other strings.

I'm predominantly a guitar player (been playing 50 years), who has recently got into bass playing a lot more. Ive already got a 4 string and a 5 string bass, but... Ive just bought a 6 string fretless! 😨 I must admit...I'm a bit scared. 😁
