That example is precisely one of the most inappropriate lines in the series, as Ami/Sailor Mercury is described as a sweet girl in Japanese and would never speak rudely. In this case, I feel that the attempt to Americanize her lines did not fit her because she is not the kind of person to speak in ingenious ways.

@@harukamoti It was accurate for the times, they had to make it relatable to the audience (Americans); thus the root dying phrase and though anime had a decent presence in the 90's (toonami/adult swim/G4tech tv) it went way mainstream in the 2000's. The consumption increased and with the demand they were better funded for translators and voice actors. Though Amy was supposed to be soft and kind she could be just as fierce as any of the other scouts. No one remains a placid lake once a rock is dropped in it. Just my opinion.

I don't care what anyone says. The dub is amazing! It's so campy, hilarious, and charming in its own dorky way. I was always a tall, curly- haired tomboy who stood out without even meaning to, and so when I discovered Sailor Jupiter and witnessed her bravery and confidence, it really helped me through my own awkwardness. I'll always be grateful to Ms. Takeuchi and the Canadian dubbers for giving me that.

The thing I rarely see people talk about is that Sailor moon is such a weird and goofy show, this kind of delivery enhances the quality for me. At no point do these voice lines feel out of place, even the infamous "He is tuxedo mask, I don't believe it" feels consistent with who these characters are. It's a show where a highschool girl has a sassy talking cat and fights monsters in a miniskirt. Also she's princess of the moon. ALSO her daughter from the future comes, brainwashes her adopted family and her love interest is a pegasus. It's cool if you like the other versions, but I just can't get into a show that's this goofy and also takes itself too seriously. The camp and cheesiness are what make the show and characters so lovable and memorable for me.

Indeed. It's clearly meant to be funny. I think the biggest problem people have is when they change facts and plot details. But amusingly enough when they change stuff that can make things even funnier in some cases. The humor is what got me hooked for sure. And it's really funny regardless of which dub you watch.

But Sailor Moon doesn't take itself too seriously, just as seriously as it needs to. Just because you find the premise of this obvious fantasy series "goofy" doesn't mean that everything in the series has to be treated the way you perceive it. The premise is one thing. The tone it follows is another. This is like watching Batman and saying that you can’t take it seriously because the hero dresses like a bat to scare criminals. If you "just can't get into a show" like Sailor Moon treating its subject matter sincerely when it needs to, then you haven't learned to suspend your disbelief. If there's one thing that the Japanese are good at, it's making a series of this nature completely ridiculous without being self-aware. You "rarely see people talk about" that because it's just the status quo for this kind of program, so they just accept it and move on. If the show did what you suggest, then there'd be no balance between the comedy and drama. I mean, how does a high school girl fighting monsters in a miniskirt make her reacting to the revelation of her love interest’s identity like a robot feel “consistent” with who the character is? Those two things have literally nothing to do with each other.

The thing is, the original was plenty unserious, and very serious when it needed to be. And it was intentional. The original dub was unintentionally funny at times, many times, due to poor quality control (most of these are just bad writing and bad readings of bad writing from BLIND FIRST TAKES). That in no way makes it better. It just gives us more to laugh at. But it the original weren't so good and so revered, that first dub wouldn't have happened. And if the first dub weren't shit, the second dub wouldn't have happened.

They had the Japanese scripts translated literally, so it still conveys the intended message, albeit in 90’s American vernacular in order to appeal to the target audience, but as one of the voice actors sort of said, there were a lot of things that they couldn't do on US television at the time. As for how "The takeaway isn’t supposed to be Looney Tunes in mahou shoujo form," this dub was geared towards American kids at a time when shows like Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs were enjoying great success, so DiC probably figured that including a brand of humor that said audience was familiar with would prevent them from being alienated from this Japanese show. Not to mention, some of the first magical girl shows featured Looney Tunes-esque humor. Context matters.

I grew up with this dub so I still really like it, but I like the viz redub also. In particular, I liked Beryl and Zoysite from the DiC dub. Beryl sounded like a real witch and Zoysite as a woman was cool (mainly due to the voice actor). (Zoisite = original male, Zoysite = female DiC character) I preferred Ann/Alan in the DiC dub, also thought Wiseman was more intimidating in the DiC dub. There are characters I just can’t rate though, like Jupiter. I like both versions of her, legitimately awesome performances by those ladies. Also original Sailor Venus and Mercury. I do kinda wish they tried to get some of the DiC actors back for the redub but ah well. Memories! ❤

I wasn't the target audience for this show, I was more interested in watching dragonball BUT it only came on TV on Saturday morning super early and I never woke up early enough, I always missed it. So, oddly enough , during the weekdays ,before school, they would air re runs of Sailor Moon every morning. So being so hungry for anything anime , I would watch Sailor Moon, and I really liked it. Looking back, I really loved the voice acting , they could be so dramatic and convincingly serious, but also very funny. So I became sorta a sailor moon fan and loved the series, just never really told anyone cuz none of my friends watched it, and I didn't know much girls that were into anime and the one girl I met at school that did like anime, she watched dragon ball 😂😂

DiC and Cloverway may be cheesy and have censorship issues, but you can tell the people who worked on it had a lot of fun and creativity. Viz on the other hand is just one note, trying to be accurate to the original as possible that it feels very bland, especially with the direct translations from Japanese to English that do not work. I’d watch the subs for the original experience over Viz, and DiC/CW for a good laugh/to have fun. Edit: I started a fight lol. Not saying that Viz being accurate is bad, but there are moments where the scripts just don’t feel natural for English speakers, and a lot of the time, the voice actors don’t sound like they’re having fun. It’s strange because they sound better in Crystal. I think the perfect dub would be to mix both dubs with DiC’s natural translations and charm and Viz’s accuracy.

Not having hammy ridiculous lines isn’t being bland at all,the acting is solid and can be taken seriously unlike these cheesy dubs that aged like milk. A dub that is far above average is far better than two mediocre dubs that are carried by nostalgia.

@@Cr102y I can't take the high-pitch delivery of Sareena/Usagi seriously in that Viz dub. It hurts my ear. It's also kind of cringe to hear American people pronouncing Japanese names when the characters themselves look American or European. Doesn't sound natural. I preferred the 90s giving characters English names. But that's just me. Better to watch the original Sub if you want a faithful adaptation, imo. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe not, but DiC/Clover dubs are still very fun to watch.

I remember once reading a lot of hate towards the DIC dub and am wondering if it’s just me, or has it kind of come around with people, if for no other reason the nostalgia factor. Straight up, I felt the voice acting was top notch, I prefer the music and as for the changes and cuts, you don’t miss what you never had, though I appreciate that the situations that resulted in the cuts were pretty disappointing. But Terri Hawkes? Katie Griffin? Susan Roman? Canadian legends, and the unique, powerful sounding voices were part of why I watched.

This is the only dubbed version I've ever seen. It was very weird at times but that made me love it even more. If I can't watch this version then I'd rather watch the subbed version.
