After a lifetime of 37 Martins, all body sizes, tone woods, bracing styles; Standards, Authentics, 40 series and Custom Shops..........there is no "best". I retired with "variety", Mahogany makes you appreciate Rosewood (and vice versa), "tweener" woods like Koa/Tasmanian Blackwood fill the middle ground, dreads are cannons, OM/000's are balanced, 0/00's are "surprising". Everybody's personal preferences are right for them, play what makes your ears smile.............enjoyed your video !~!~!

Oh my. If I can have one of each Martin model😊. When people are forced to pick when it comes to picking only one or two that they can have then people will pick. OOO-28 and D-41 are only two Martins in my collection. Wish I can have more Martins but there are other fantastic guitars to have.

The cool thing about Martins is that, you can play a D-28 today and it will be your favorite, and then tmrw play a D-41 and it will be your new favorite, then the next day play a 000-18 and it will be the new favorite. Martin is the Flagship of acoustics, period!

I bought a D-35 about 20 years ago. I had settled on a D-28 when the merchant said, "You should take a listen to this one." It was a D-35, and the sound was magical. I still think that about the sound of that guitar. I think that's the word to describe the sound of a D-35--magical.

Didn’t know I would absolutely fall in love with a D35 until I did. Acoustic room, Guitar Centre, 3 other guys playing. The instant I felt and heard it, I was hooked. Could tell even though it was anything but a great place to hear it. Years later, still deeply satisfied.

That was Rory Gallaghers favorite acoustic. It' s a great guitar and you play it real nice. I' m also more into mahagony bodies, so I play my D-18 GE now for 10 years. But it is also a question of look, don' t like neck bindings so much. Nevertheless, you' re seem to be happy with it and that's all about. Cheers from germany

Great review, Jonathan - beautiful playing that really brings out the different guitars' tones. A left-handed 2015 (50th Anniversary Standard D-35) was my first Martin - lovely guitar, great sound. Then I later got a lefty J-40, and just felt that it had a little *more* of everything across the sound spectrum, so I sold the D-35...hard to sell my first Martin! They are great, balanced, "do everything" guitars.

Really great video. You have done a great job of recording the classic Martin sound. As a long-time Martin owner, I believe you can't go wrong with a Martin. When you find the one that fits you best, you will know it. Try them all. Personally for me, nothing can beat my magnificent 1962 Martin D28, which never ceases to amaze me and challenge my skills. If I was rich I'd buy other models. These guitars are only as good as the person playing them.

I chose a special edition D-35 reimagined and put on the liquid metal bridge pins as well lol I chose that guitar over all the others that I played over the course of a year in 5 different guitar shops..it felt the best and sounded the best to me. The D-18s and 28s didn't sound full enough and the 40 series sounded too glassy for what I like. The D-35 is the Goldilocks guitar for me. I also love the sound with an Elliott capo on it...it turns the guitar into a virtual doorbell machine. Always love your playing btw. :)

Beautiful Guitar and superb playing! Thanks for the video. My first Martin was a D-35. I fell in love with it the first time I Played it. I now own 4 martins, a Mahogany 000-15, a Maple J-16 and a Reimagined 000-28. The 000-15 plays the easiest but none of them come close to the D-35 for tone and presence. Every time I come back to it after playing one of the others for a while, I'm always thrilled again with just how good it sounds!

I always feel that when you play guitars en-masse so to speak, which let's face it almost everyone watching will have done (possibly too many times), there are those certain guitars that reach out to you as you play, and whisper sweet promises in your ear. They often have slightly unique tones that differ even from supposedly identical models, and when you find such a guitar then you find out how much the universe is laughing at you (that bit comes when checking the price!) However, that said, and making a most significant distinction here, finding that one special guitar, is, like finding that one significant other, an opportunity that only fate can be said to have played a role in, and who wants to upset fate? Now you have both Jonathan, the guitar and the significant other(s), what a wonderful world, I applaud you, and your good sense, fine choices, and continued prosperity and creative indulgences. Keep it up, cos' it's wonderful.

I knew you would buy this guitar by the the way you hugged in last video you did of it. You won’t regret it, it will also resonate the more you play it, then you will hear even better tones from it, the harmonics in particular are almost magical and will sing out divinely. I’m sure it will lift you to new horizons creating your best music to come. Well I’m sixty next month and my wife said her and my daughters thought to buy me a guitar, dare I say it I would love to have a D35 as you know Jonathan, but I think I’m being a bit optimistic, although they could contribute towards it, it’s that or the HD35. I also have a D-41 but I use them in studios for different effects. The D35 is a 1975 (pre-adjustable truss rod) with a neck reset in 1987. It's rock solid despite 3 re-frettings. This is the boomiest guitar I've ever played. The D41 has some ringing tones that the D35 only displays with new strings. The D41 displays those for a good 48 hours of recording time longer than the D35. But it doesn't have the bass-response - if I want my E-string to growl, I use the D35, and for tuneful strumming (WAVELENGTH). (If I'm doing percussive strumming, either is fine. But I try to use both depending on lead licks or strumming types.)

Hello from Brighton on the south coast of the UK and congratulations on your new D-35! I too have a D-35 that I love but its a bit older than yours; I bought it in 1980 and it was my 33rd birthday present to myself. Its still going strong all these years later, probably wearing the years better than I am. I think you're wrong when you say that the three-piece back doesn't contribute to the guitar's tone though; my understanding is that it does although perhaps only indirectly. Having the two joints in the back as opposed to the one in the D-28 makes the whole body stronger which in turn allows the bracing to be the 1/4-inch scalloped bracing of the OM series rather than the 5/16th of the D-28 - and that change in bracing crtainly does make for a different voice to the D-28. So many people regard the D-35 as just a D-28 with extra binding, but as you show in this video nothing could be further from the truth. Love your playing, by the way. And I love the Blacksmoke - I've never come across one of those before.

Just curious, did you have intonation issues with your guitar and if you did, how did you fix this? 70s and early 80s Martins are notorious for intonation issues due to the bridge being usually 1/8" to 1/4" off of their correct placement.

Agreed... I have a 1975 D-35, the thing that makes this series work is the 1/4 inch top bracing... Now, saying that, you will get top bulging over the years at standard pitch because of the lighter bracing...

@@docstockton5564 WRONG... At 1/4" wide, Martin D-35 top bracing is a 16th of an inch, or 20%, lighter than that of a D-28. These guitars were designed for a big, warm sound, and instantly found favor with Dreadnought buyers.

I bought my d-35 new in 2005. It just keeps getting better. I also have a hd-28 and Gibson j-45. My go to is the d-35. There's something about it that is different. Maybe because it's so balanced with a more warm sound. Could be the quarter inch bracing.

The Martin D-35 came out in the 1960s with a 3 piece back because Brazilian Rosewood was getting hard to find. It was banned in 1969. Because they could not get wide enough backs they came up with the 3 piece back. They only needed 5"-5" pieces for the back. They added an bound ebony fingerboard. It was my first Martin in 1975. Some sound better then D-28s and some don't. Some 60s D-35s are all Brazilian up to 1969. Some have a Brazilian middle piece. Like all Guitars some just sound better then others, Martin are my favorites. I was a Dealer for Martin, Gibson,Taylor,Guild, and many others . With 40 years in this business I have played thousands of Guitars and they will always suprise you.

The other difference is the bracing on the D-35. D-35 has 1/4 inch Sitka Spruce bracing and the D-28 has 5/8 inch Sitka Spruce bracing. The D-35 tops are also hand sanded in the Custom Shop.

Yes, that D222 sounds sweet. I think you hit on it when you said "midrange" and "sits in the mix." That's the D35. My experience is that it is more balanced across the strings. Other Martins are more scooped- big bass and clear highs. But if you want something with presence, the D35 is going to fit in beautifully.
