We all have a thread that drew us to quilting. We sat down with Karen, a quilter and maker from Fairfax Station, VA, to hear about her quilting journey: how she got started, what she likes to make and give, and why quilting has remained such a big part of her life.
Every quilt has a story, and so does every quilter. We’re in love with them all. Does Karen's story resonate with you? Share with us in the comments below.
We’re almost a million quilters strong in this community. And we’re stronger still when we share with each other.

Some of the old quilts my grandma made are tattered because they were used. The reward of making a quilt for a loved one is the joy it brings to my heart to see the joy in them! Great series!

I had always enjoyed sewing...I started with baby doll clothes on an old Singer treadle and I loved ironing...Mom let me press my Dad's hankies. Mom did a lot of repairs on clothes in the40's ,50's & 60's making my clothes. It was just a natural growth with fabrics. Making my own clothes and my 3 children was always fun. well I retired 15 years ago and dusted off my sewing machine and went to 1 Quilting Class ...I was hooked. I can't tell you how many quilts I've made, Baby, Tee Shirt. All sizes... to some crafty bowl & purses...yes my Prayer is to live long enough to use up all my fabric as God has provided ...Enjoy Love and Prayers to All ♥🙏 ♥

This was a wonderful reminder of why we quilt. I started when i retired and my goal was to make a quilt for each grandchild when they graduate high school. I've enjoyed making every one of them❤

Karen, thank you for sharing your great story! I’m from Fairfax and I’m a quilter too. We have very similar stories. Nancy from the Quilt Patch taught me in 1981. ❤

No those raggedy quilts were the ones she used the most, perhaps her favorites, not her show quilts but the ones that were full of love, joy and memories.

Quilting is my sanity within its own insanity. I am usually working on 2-3 quilts at a time.

I don’t like the look of T-shirt quilts, but they’re more about the memories, and being cuddly, than visual aesthetic appeal. I have my brother’s T-shirts, and would like to use them in a quilt if I can ever figure out how to make one that looks good to me.
