Have practiced as a PTA for 30 years. I have loved the field and working to assist with recovery of health and function for people of all ages. My greatest epiphany was realizing the poor trade of time for money. moving to per visit home health gave me a breath of fresh air allowing increased flexibility and an ability to make considerable more money. Good to hear you followed your passion. I''m currently attempting to move in a new direction.

If PTA was really such a great field you wouldn’t be moving in a new direction. I’m a PTA myself and the longer I do it the more I realize this career is a clown job. Run around all day telling someone to wiggle their ankles in bed and do some kicks with a weight that they could lift with their pinky finger muscle…like that’s really going to significantly strengthen Gertrude’s quads so she can walk better…no no no!! It’s a joke and a sham just like the therapeutic ultrasound garbage.
@redrider80362 жыл бұрын
@@user-hn9qg5qm3o you don’t mention how long you’ve practiced therapy. But after probably a decade of practice and having the opportunity to teach at a PTA program I too came to a similar conclusion. Although I wouldn’t call it a clown job at all. You have to keep it functional IMO for it to truly be beneficial. I agree that many of the treatments and modalities that are often offered are lame and ineffective. However that is where keeping it simple yet creative can make it enjoyable.
@user-hn9qg5qm3o2 жыл бұрын
@@redrider8036 It’s a clown job because the PTs run around doing the same functional bullcrap that the CNAs do themselves and yet the PT field is supposed to be doing “skilled therapy.” I could literally teach a 14 year old to do this job. It’s not as “skilled” as they try to claim it is. And also when all you do is “functional” stuff the patients look at you like you really are a clown. The look in their eyes is “You want me to stand up from this chair?…and then what? Just stand here for 2 minutes? Ohh..you want me to move over to sit on the edge of the bed? What for?”

@@user-hn9qg5qm3o I totally get where you’re coming from. @Ko Jin not a bad idea. I would say, it depends if you want to do it for yourself or for another company. The bad think about digital marketing for others is that you don’t need a license to work as one. Therefore, you are completing with a lot of people who can sell their services better than you but not necessarily doing a better job. A lot of people claim to be great at it, but only a few give their clients their moneys’ worth. Also it is hard to learn how to run digital campaigns in a way that they makes financial sense. There aren’t many people who are willing to show you their secret to success in advertising. I think you have a great idea, just in marketing don’t worry about making mistakes. 👍

Unless the healthcare system changes to where the quality of time with patients rather the quantity of patients in a day is valued, more of us will quit. On a happy note, I always enjoy your authentic self videos and your cat. BTW, your cats is on the chunky side (I’m an ex vet tech) so I can say that without being judgmental but rather observant. Thanks for making this video Antonio. Im currently thinking of attending a course in PTA. I love working with people and physical fitness. My last job was working at a assisted living center. Seeing the residents day in and day out with deformity's and amputations helped me to see past there physical condition and connect with something deeper. Im not sure if I will always be a PTA, but seeing how you were able to use the PTA carrier to follow your dreams in new way is very inspiring. There's still some doubt in my mind but like Steve Harvey said I gotta jump. Thanks agian, much love!

Former SNF rehab director and PTA here for a large staffing company. You made the right choice. With all of the Medicare budget cuts and PDPM in the SNF setting, we therapists have way more to do for less money. Coincidentally there’s actually a new Medicare budget cut starting in early 2024… I recently decided to go back to school for computer science to become a software engineer. That leap of faith you mentioned is truly scary at first but it feels liberating in the long run. Still in school but I feel blessed! I had to maintain 50% productivity as a rehab director. It’s ridiculous that a rehab director has to treat patients why making sure a department is running well. It’s definitely a hallmark of an industry not doing well when a manager is forced to the same work the employees are doing to “save costs.” I understand covering for an employee call off or poor staffing, no problem there but to spend 4 hours out of my day consistently having to treat patients on top executing all my duties just to save money is absolutely ridiculous to me. Mind you I was a rehab director for a large therapy staffing company that is present in nearly all 50 states, not some small operation. You all most likely have heard of my company’s name. To give more background. I ran not only a SNF operation but a geriatric outpatient program as well. I was primarily the only one driving the marketing for our program for the retirement community/CCRC I was working for. I gave presentations to the retirement community spreading awareness about therapy and pro bono balance screenings that spent lots of time to prepare. Plus the pay is only around $5 hourly more than a regular PTA/COTA if you’re a PTA, same deal for PT/OT/SLP in regards to a registered therapist’s income. Regional director’s salary is not much higher than either. Financially it makes no sense to pursue this position of leadership. Don’t forget SNF therapy employees NEVER get raises unless they have to threaten their bosses. The same went for me as a rehab director and my time as a treating PTA. Do not become SNF rehab director, in 2023 almost 2024. Why being a SNF therapist isn’t worth it in 2023 is due to much more work for much less pay with much less focus/attention to patients who are in need of care. Typically in SNFs these days you only get to treat patients for 30min treatment sessions and are expected to have multiple group therapy sessions per week that give absolutely no benefit to patients. Groups typically run between 3-6 patients per group. No benefit to doing this, the higher ups in all therapy companies know this but still greatly push for this so they can save money. It’s cheaper to pay a therapist to treat 6 patients at the same time versus 1 patient. It’s absolute BS. Sorry for the long post but I’m tired of seeing patients and therapists getting screwed by the therapy company establishments and Medicare. And I just wish there was more awareness being spread regarding the corporate side of large therapy companies and how Medicare budget cuts are seriously decreasing the quality of care and exploiting hard working therapists.

I just graduated PTA school last year. I passed the board in October and it took me till April 2021 to find a place to hire me. I applied to everything. I’m only PRN and it seems full time positions are impossible to find. I really thought this was my passion but you’re right, I spend my whole day treating patients and come home just to eat, go to bed, and do it all again the next day. It is redundant and more than time consuming but it has its perks for sure. I am still pondering if I made the right decision , but I’m going to stick it out since this is only the beginning for me. Good luck on your new endeavors!

Hi Antonio! I'm sorry to see that you left the field of physical therapy, but so happy you have found something, through your time as a PTA, that you love even more. I did just want to add that there are other doors that may open for those who choose PTA, other than just going to be a PT. Many of our grads go on to be clinic managers or supervisors, and sometimes very soon into their career. Also, as a PTA, you are able to teach in a PTA Program. We have actually hired many of our grads to teach in our program at Baker College. But ultimately, it should be the love of patient care and the love for helping others that get you in the field in the first place. I wish you the best of luck and if I ever need any digital media, I'll look you up for sure! :)

I'm the same age and in the same position you described yourself as, I don't really know what I want to do but I just want to be on my feet, making a comfortable salary that I can support myself with, and don't want to go to school for a long period of time. My only other idea was to work in human services, but it makes less money for more schooling... I just want to help people in some fashion. I've also learned that animal PTs exist and it motivates me to maybe move up to being a PT rather than a PTA in the future. I'm very afraid of being put at a dead end though. Why do we have to choose so soon?! Haha, I'm glad for the honesty though. I agree with you. It makes me sick to see these weird characters that say “Oh I just love being a PTA yada yada.” I have been a PTA for 5 years and have yet to see the greatness of this field. If anything all I’ve seen is mostly people that do not care about doing PT and are just in it because their doctor ordered it. Everything you said is true from my experience too. Productivity unreasonably high causing you to have to become a sloppy therapist that can only do the bare minimum because you don’t have time to get too into it. I’m so glad I Sam out of this field. Even all the co-workers I met in the field always seemed strange like they secretly hated the job too but will never admit it. They all act like they’re bound to the cult of PT.

James T, in my opinion, you actually make it sound much better than anything I've experienced for the last 15 years. When nurses ask "are you really sure you want to switch to field, " I want to put them in my shoes for a week, almost like they put kids in the scared straight program. Outside of having success with your own practice, (which in my opinion has more to do with your luck with "location, location, location," than anything else, as "the man," aka big corporations, state practice acts, and constant reimbursement changes can absolutely take you out, irrespective of anything else), .. and I'm being 100% transparent and realistic, I don't see how anyone, deemed to be not clinically insane, can make a case for going into any rehab field at all. If you have a unicorn job, more flowers your way, the exception does not make the rule. I would really can't think of anything run worse in the medical field OR in general, to be honest. Bro, McDonald's workers in and around my area's, are treated Immensely better, depending on your setting are not only paid more, (hospitals were trying to pay me $11.50), but you better believe aren't clocking out and waking for productivity sake, have a shift, and are still getting paid for the entirety of that shift, aren't getting called off at the time clock...are getting low key fired for "hearesay" of looking into other professions, or even wanting to advance higher, (Ie; McDonald's Univ or mgt vs getting booted for going back to be a DPT bc lack of work dependability), stressing out over reimbursement of every word written bc potential reimbursement implications, having to continue to see customers after being physically assaulted or bodily excitement being thrown on them or loose their jobs, being stuck like modern day ground hog day movie on not being able to get out of the situation bc McDonald's customers have "their rights to be treated if they want, and when they want, and if this doesn't happen, holy hell is raised and job's can be terminated, (ie; pending on the laziness and mental health factor, caseload, etc, good luck getting a pay check, and have fun being a personal servant to MANY people simultaneously), ...also.last time I checked, McDonald's workers salaries eventually go up....they don't stay the same or go $7 - $10 an hour down bc of "lack of reimbursement" and usually they actually have a place to conduct their business, (the resteraunt), and the necessary supplies to perform their duties, and don't have to buy their own or get laughed at or told by corporate "there's the door if you don't like it," if requesting necessary items or place to perform their job correctly. I'm also assuming McDonald's employees can get help to do aspects of their job from co employees and don't have to beg corporate for help, and put their job or professional license on the line or risk being written up or fired only to be told ....ie; in the SNF therapy world "no bc of decreased reimbursement rate".ie; for help/ co tx of a 500 lb plus psych pt that has a hx of throwing themselves on the ground to hurt themselves to sue and or remain in impatient facilities permanently. Also I'm not aware of a McDonald's where employees aren't allowed to, or have to sneak to take bathroom breaks, but I am aware of and worked for SNFs like this, who would also write you up, (not any other department), for having a cell phone on your person....notice I didn't say "use of cell phone" I could on and on and on, ....but got to be extremely mindful of productivity AAT, everyyday!!!! ...would love to post signs like that at the corporate big wigs personal life events like funerals or weddings. Honestly man if I had 5 pts for an hour a piece on my schedule, in a SNF, I would be dreaming, it's more like up to16 - 20 pts between 30 and 40 minutes a piece, and find out who you have to bride nurse and aide wise, and pretty much also do their jobs, so that you can do yours and what supervisory PT will be upset with you for not giving these pts, (especially the combative ones), "a fair shake" ie; coming back and being unproductive and being physically and verbally abused, 3,4, 5, and 6 times, and coming to tx them at 6am bc it's "their right" only to clock out and wait till 10am bc all the other 19 pts are refusing to be "up so early," but you better not see that 65 y/o TKA PT at 6:30pm...even though she had family all day and wants to watch the Maurey Povitch marathon, as you'll be written up for being "unprofessional for being entirely too late!!!" Oh and don't forget to do family education with the demented, A and O x 1, 94 y/o lady to ensure compliance with her WB status, as her compliance is YOUR responsibility, as is the education of the 4th child of hers today....get that skilled Evidence Based tx in...while performing point of service documentation with all those family members that came off the set of Jerry Springer ...in, in 30 ish minutes.....family and pt must be happy...no over delivering of minutes...and oh by the way your tx better not be 30 or 35 minutes though, EVER...bc then corporate knows your tx was definitely all fraudulent....have fun at your ALJ hearing. Oh yeah, and after tha day, make sure to check your texts bc you very well could be getting called off tomorrow, and the next several days bc of lack of pts....but wait by the phone and don't plan on living your life in case your needed, bc that's your responsibility.....well I mean you really can't take PTO anyway bc corporate will use that when you're caseload is "low," aka often, since you get your insurance benefits through them and they would get hit for that, so yeah make sure you pay, to have your time off and that you realize you'll pay more having health insurance than if you paid out right, ...your deductible will be higher than what the insurance will pay out once it's met, etc. etc. I could go on and on and on, ....but I don't want "over deliver on minutes and I must always be mindful of productivity," but I feel like Ben Shapiro in saying most fast food employees have a "better job model, more earning potential, and can definitely male more than some "full time" PTAs ,(bc of how many ways the corporatatioal systems, reimbursement systems, setting, (HH, SNF, Outpatient, etc), are set up to be impossible to meet, let alone thrive, for any human being)...prove me , (consistently), wrong........ (Keeping on mind, the exception does not make the rule) I could go

You are awesome 💯 i'll reach out to you someday! Me and my wife plans to open our own PT clinic soon!! - I think you'll be a really good life coach also 👍

Since 2016 healthcare changes from U.S. government, and all the Rehab staff (3 disciplines, OT, PT, ST) worked on hours based on how many minutes of treatment of patients on that day!. A lot changes, I don't think working is like more than 15, 20 years ago. Even some nurses left their job too.

Shit i just even started taking a Digital marketing and e-commerce course lol. Best of luck to you and your goals. ❤️

Happy to see you go for your passions. But quick question... It's very limited on info, however is there a place for PTA's to work (or work around) athletes or sports teams? I'm sure you'd have to get referred to land a job like that but what are the odds on a PTA in/on a sports facility/team? Edit... I'm also about to be licenced as a Massage Therapist, then going straight towards my PTA liscense. Any pointers you have would be greatly appreciated. Have a good day.

Nice! That will definitely help having a background in massage therapy. It’s all about making connections, but yah there are areas you can work in that let’s you work with athletes. Ian who worked at the clinic with me used to do massage/pta for a pro runner It’s all about getting your foot in the door into that niche industry. Once you build a reputation with it it will be easier to network and get into a position where you’re working with more athletes.

Very few, PTA’s or PT’s, anywhere, work with athletes or sports teams. Greater than 95% of the time you will work with elderly patients with mobility impairments. People who use wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. If you got very lucky and found the right job you may get an Orthopedic Physician who refers patients to the outpatient clinic you work at. Some of those patients could be high school or college kids that have a sports related injury and your rehabbing them to get back to playing their sport. Those are dream patients and very rare in my experience.

Antonio, love your videos man!! I also felt limited in my PTA career, which is why I decided to pursue the DPT bridge program. I will find out in August if I got in or not. I know you said you weren't willing to commit the time/money to become a DPT but did you ever consider the bridge format? Good luck with your future endeavors!

That’s great! I just didn’t want to bring on more debt and go down that route but I did consider it. I think it’s actually a really good thing to do if you’re a PTA looking to become a PT. That is what I would do if I was going to become a PT.

I recently quit my job in October after embarking on my own journey to get paid for my skill and not just my time. I have been a PTA since 2006 and always thought that's what I would do but after realizing I had hit a ceiling on what I could earn quit to start my own therapy company. Would love to connect please reach out when able or do u have a way to get connected with you?

Well U R as cute as a button! So real U made watching this video fun. No I'm not a PTA or a PT ,but know some people who R PTs & wondered why someone might stop being a PTA. That is why I watched your video. But I keep watching it because U R so "REAL" & just adorable the way U talk & move. Glad U have found yourself & like helping people. I too think helping people is the Cat's Meow!!

lol thanks 🤠 “The cats meow” hahaha. I appreciate the kind words

@@AntonioSanson well you earned the kind words because you kept on going didn't try to make a polished fake video with perfect everything but let yourself be human and vulnerable which is appealing to me and I'm sure many other people I much prefer to see somebody knowing that they're human and they make errors and things don't go all the way they expect. So just be you because it worked for me. I thought it was a delight to watch you. I bet other people liked it too!!

Good to hear you’re pursuing what you love! Since you left your job, can you still get a job a few years later without having to renew anything?
@AntonioSanson3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to renew my license this year which will give me two more years as a PTA. All you have to do to maintain your license is do continuing education and pay a fee.
