Sean is 46 and trained two months at a local BJJ school that didn’t have any structure and had beginners sparring from day 1. Then he saw an Instagram video of Rener’s that told him to give jiu-jitsu a second chance, amd we’re glad he did. For everyone else, if you’ve had a similar experience, tell us about it.

My first Jiu Jitsu class 7 months ago I got thrown into rolling with a purple belt girl who wrapped me up and submitted me about 6 times in 6 minutes. It was rough for the ego and the body. I thought about quitting not gonna lie. I realized that class wasn’t noob friendly but it solidified Jiu Jitsu for me. It proved a 30lb lighter female could rag doll me. I have been hooked since. Remember it’s a combat sport, it can be rough but it will make you tougher. Everyone is different, I liked rolling from the beginning.

Tried it when I was 33 for like a month, then in one class I was rolling with a guy who was stronger and agressive. He went knee on my side and grabbed my neck and pulled. I felt pain and tried to get out just to get cranked again that's when I got my rib broken. Tried one class years latter just to get my elbow hyperextended in another school. That was it for me.

Great video on this concept: I have 6 years in BJJ and I remember the first day I did BJJ I was paired up a 140pd purple belt 2nd strip and he made into a pretzel . I was so shocked how easy it was for him to submit me since I out weighed him by 60pds. . It’s true that as a white belt at that time I could have learned more techniques before I started sparring to make me feel confident . I guess it’s different now since I got used to the hardcore training ; but I would have benefited so much if I trained the way Rener Gracie mentioned.

Maybe this point will actually mean something coming from a Gracie? Almost every BJJ channel has a video about "why white belts quit" and almost none of them touch on this reason, which is the actual reason. They all focus on "their egos are hurt because blah, blah, blah." No, it's that very few people want to pay to be beaten up until they final "get it." Any striking gym that has an absolutely beginner spar on day-one is a gym to avoid. Yet, for some reason, "hardcore" sports BJJ prides itself on beating up (e.g. bullying) its white belts.

my experience first training jiu jitsu and I consider myself tougher than the average person. I got battered for 9 months at a hard-core mma gym in jiu jitsu classes were most of my sparring partners were competing mma fighters. It's ridiculous. I stopped doing that as I have to work and I was always injured. And to be fair i got reasonable at two submissions (guillotine and armbar from Mount) but that's it I Don remember how to hip escape or get out of full mount. Anyway I'm going to a ctc to learn gracie combatives next week 😄 and I'm looking forward to it. (I also just found out that gym is no longer teaching jiu jitsu as the head coach has left now its only striking)

Lots of people join a BJJ club because they have low self esteem and want to build up confidence through self defense. When they finally work up the courage to walk into a gym however they are confronted by people who have this idea that everyone has massive ego's and needs to be humbled. BJJ is hard enough as it is even with a good gym atmosphere. Not good for business.

Westerners often tend to wanna take out aggression in class during training but go to Thailand and Muay Thai boxers spar gently. They don't spar full contact. They only go full contact during an actual bout or when kicking/striking pads. Yet the Thai fighters often dominate the westerners in Muay Thai. Proving full contact sparring doesn't create superior fighters. Alot of westerners are just coconut heads with too much aggression. BTW: Im from USA, so I can be a critic of my country, based on experiences, and in my youth I was that coconut head that always wanted to spar hard thinking it was better training. I matured & grew up though. Some don't.

There are a lot of BJJ schools that believe the new guy or girl should get smashed to bits constantly during the first year, to 'test their determination". Kinda like "trial by fire". You would be surprised how many schools still take this approach. I bet there are hundreds of thousands of ex-students worldwide who quit BJJ altogether and will never come back, specifically due to this poorly thought out approach. Striking instructors don't kick the living hell out of their new whtebelt Kickboxing students on their first day, so why do some BJJ schools think it's a good plan to smash new BJJ students during their first rolls?

As a white belt I think jujitsu has to be one of the most difficult martial arts out there to get your head around as a beginner. Part of it is exactly as described here. The other part is just the lingo. I gather there are fewer types of movements that I first thought - many of them seem to have drastically different names if they have a minor variation or are done from a different position / direction. It's a LOT to wrap your brain around.

100% perfect description of my own experience!! Here's class 1 in a nutshell SUPER nice instructor. (check!) Seemingly GREAT GROUP of training partners. (check!) EVERYONE basically welcoming and friendly (check!) I follow along in warm ups Advance techniques are demonstrated to the class....folks pair off to drill Instructor pulls me aside: "How much jiu jitsu do you know?" Me: "Zero.....none....nada." Instructor: "Okay here's a couple of strategies for escaping closed guard".......5-10 minutes of instruction while everyone else is drilling. Instructor: "Okay.....time to roll! Hey Dave, (pointing to a brown belt) he knows A & B....make him work on that....good resistance, no submissions." Me: "Wait....what??" 6 minute timer on the wall: "Beep!!" Commence the equivalent of grappling with a 90 liter duffle bag filled with shifting beach sand that knows how to counter everything I try......which for me was virtually nothing. I'm only 120 seconds into my BJJ journey and it felt like slipping below the surface of a swimming pool with the lifeguards pushing me down. Like any COMPLETELY inexperienced person wanting to do their best, I completely redlined on cardio with all my inefficient struggling. Timer beeps....1 min rest....find a new partner. Repeat. I spend the next two rounds of rolling totally gassed gasping for air & feeling like I can't lift my arms let alone attempt anything resembling what I'd been shown. It was the martial equivalent of being taught how to swim by being rowed to the middle of the lake and pushed out of the boat...in other words, it felt like drowning (and probably looked like it to my training partners!! LOL). Look, I KNEW it was gonna be hard but I think I imagined there'd be some form of introduction to basic theory or technique before being pitted against full resistance?? Instead, the experience of being asked to roll with ZERO foundation, ZERO grounding in basic concepts, ZERO understanding of basic theory.......just felt impossible. It's not that I was so easily dominated by my partners. I expected that. Its that it simply felt like being dropped into a mountain stage of the Tour De France before even learning how to even ride a bike! That said, I get it. That method has clearly worked for others and I admire the hell out of those folks on the mat who somehow managed to get through that training method. I can see why it's even a sort of 'badge of honor" for them. But even as enthusiastic as I was to let BJJ be my next big thing......I just ended up feeling like it wasn't going to be a thing I could do. I left feeling completely bummed. I figured BJJ just wasn't for me. Found this video, found a Gracie affiliate in Manchester NH.....and I'm psyched to attend my first combatives class next week. Holding out hope it makes the difference!!

I know what you mean. Find a Gracie CTC. They trained differently. Their methodology works. Most BJJ schools have no curriculum even though they think they do and many don't even teach basic self defense. That is why so many newbies who aren't meat heads quit jiu jitsu. The methodology is horribly inefficient and the set up of training favor guys who are already big, strong, athletic or experienced. Even though I still train your experience was my experience too. My advice is find a CTC or train under Rickson Gracie lineage gyms.

I started BJJ in 2019 age 64 in Fort Worth. A small independent BJJ school that puts MMA right on their sign. I was injured by an incompetent newly promoted Blue Belt (cracked my ribs) and a 275 lb white belt that crashed down on my left shoulder (it looked like a professional wrestling maneuver). I was sparring in week one. I had only learned 1 or 2 techniques and didn’t have experience in executing them while sparring. Much less defending against many techniques. The Owner (Chris) was shocked when I quit. Fifteen months later after physically recovering (my shoulder still clicks a bit) but I have given BJJ another chance. A really good Gracie school in Texas. A similar approach to what you are describing at the Gracie University. I have learned the hard way that MMA on the sign might well mean, “full throttle sparring week one”. I also learned that a larger well organized school likely has many more people training (easy 15-20 people per class), and lots more Blue, Purple and Brown belts. It is the white belt and newly promoted Blue belt that are the biggest danger to causing you injuries. That independent school had really small classes with one Blue belt & 6 White belts. Cost me 15 months of injury recovery. Go with the Gracie name. It really means something.

As someone who started with the Gracie combatives I feel the foundation you learn is super important. I train at home with sparring and I feel very comfortable in most positions. I know I would have done well if just fed to the lions den but I know I would have been injured a lot early on. Having the confidence to be able to perform a technique without having to think about it before spending months getting hurt is a wonderful gift that combatives gives. There are a lot of things learning combatives that you can modify into more advanced techniques easier when you have a good understanding of how the techniques work.

I don’t know how many times I laugh and say “well that didn’t work” as I get reversed or something while rolling. But it is a lot. Showing up is a victory. The 12 year old green belt worked technique with me, and when it came time to flow, the instructor asked if he was okay with grappling me. I made the worst mistake of my life at this point, and said “Don’t worry, I’ll go easy on him…” Three minutes and 4 tap outs later, my ego was totally crushed, and I was hopelessly in love with this art.

You really can't beat it, they are simply the best at this, I came back after 12 years (major injuries and joint replacements), I jumped straight back in to Gracie Combative's to rebuild that foundation, and IT DOES! I feel very fortunate to have the Gracie Academy and these amazing instructors so close. Salute.

My favorite thing about Rener’s philosophy is that he’s REALISTIC about it. He knows MOST people don’t join a gym to become a world champion. So why not make it accessible for the majority of people who actually do join?

#Facts, I didn't quit because of this but It makes sense. COVID, I wanted to take a break but that wasn't exceptable. Coming from a military background structure is the key. Learned a random technique that is static does very little in a roll. You might not have the opportunity or not realize you could have deviated to make it work. To me fundamentals are key then roll so both can benefit. Yes one person might learn what a non person could do but that doesn't retain both as the might realize it months later. I have to travel to get different experiences.

Hey man you're absolutely right I joined bjj because I thought thought that I was going to like it but 2 months and I hate it , a brown belt just chokes me over and over again, on my first weeks of training as a whitebelt . As beginner I had no idea how to defend anything I had no idea how to escape mount because they never showed me any of that yea they teach you techniques but you darn sure can't use it when rolling so what's the point. I also realized that the coach would give tips to the purple and brownbelts and they would like smile and laugh to themselves because they roughed up a white belt wow such badasses no?

Your diluting your uncles sacrifice. You have joe Biden’s sickly grandson as your spokesman on this video straight after the cape fur seal episode in Capetown using a image of a leopard seal ? What are you doing? This kid needs to learn how to run faster, not pull guard ...you give him an online blue belt and a false sense of hope and he’s going to have a problem . The mentality of GJJ is formed against competent strikers in real life situations. You’re holding the camera like your father whilst Rickson was making the ultimate sacrifice. You are selling kabuki to anyone with a few dollars in their pockets and The Gracies that would not fight make money off the ones that did, You took a very cool thing, technique , lifestyle, diet , philosophy and you are trying to monetize it in a country with 350 million people, 1% think they can get a purple belt online ? I like you’re family and respect Renzo, Roger, Akron and admire Rickson but this guy Is a red flag you are waiving to show what’s wrong. It’s not about 242 schools it’s weather or not this guy can defend himself long enough for the cops to arrive ! even worse than using a picture of a leopard seal & listening to a guy pulling closed guard on a cape fur seal. What’s next

pretty sick of mma/hole in the wall jiu jitsu. between getting head spiked, left ear torn 1/4 of the way in, and broken ribs in 6 months, shit is intolerable. The other white belts weren't the problem, it was the blues & above fucking me up. Head spiked by purple, ear torn by a blue, and hip thrown by the fattest brown belt you've ever seen landing his shoulder into my sternum. Fuck that school. Would love to try a Gracie school that doesn't murder white belts.

I started Gracie JJ at 40 and waited about 4 mos to actually spar. One of the very first people I sparred with was an early teenager half my size (who had a few mos more experience on me) that arm barred the crap out of me...put me out of training for about 3 weeks. I almost quit that day. In hindsight, I regret waiting so long to spar. 2.5+ years later I'm still training and loving it. I wish the kid was still there (supposedly he got kicked out b/c he hurt a few other students as well) so I could get my payback.

That's a tricky one. Same thing happened to me. Dont get hung up on the belt. Instructors, their memories, and perceptions are all human. I kept losing stripes off my belt, so I got my 2nd and 3rd white belt strips twice. I had people who started 6 months after me and whom I toy with in rolls, have the same strips as me. I know everyone says it, but it's TRUE. Belts dont matter. Just last week at WNO a blue belt beat an excellent black belt (geo Martinez). I was winning every comp as a white belt, but none as a blue belt. So what did it mean? Nothing. Base your your progress on yourself. Only rely on your instructor for their knowledge and assistance.

You're asking the wrong person - white belt stripes at GU are time-based, so stripes mean something different here. It's best to talk to your coach personally and ask them how you can improve. Don't ask about your stripe, though.

That sounds about right...it took me about 1 1/2 years to get my 2nd stripe on my wb. It's different for everyone...maybe your classmate goes more often and is a faster learner? Ask your teacher and higher belts what you need to work on and areas of improvement. Oss!

I started training BJJ at 33. I loved getting into sparring from the first training session. I love that this is one of the last combat sports that promotes competitions for all age categories. But I did choose to spar from the first training and also I believe that I somewhat knew how to protect myself from injuries during sparring. I did not force it. I loved getting submitted and every step of the process.

I think Gracie jiu jitsu is the greatest open hand defense known to man. Unfortunately i had a bad experience at a Gracie gym. Their website claimed nobody had ever been injured there. Turns out that wasn’t exactly true. I actually got a shoulder injury from the brown belt instructor who didn’t listen to me when i told him i had a limited range in movement. 5 years later im still getting treatment for the shoulders. A black belt instructor who trained with the Gracies in Brazil, told me jiu jitsu training should feel like a massage, it should be gentle, learning the motions, should never be an injury while training. I wished i had just trained under him.

I feel like part of the issue is what class you go to as well. I'm at a check mat school... I go to the 6:00 a.m. class because it's the only one I can make it to and it seems much less formal. A bunch of middle-aged dudes getting after it. . And it's a warm-up then about 30 minutes on technique and then about 20 minutes for live sparring, so I have been live rolling since day one. There is also a fundamentals class a couple times a week but later in the day... I'm not sure how the fundamentals class works since I've never been to it but I can imagine if I had started in that class it would have been a much different experience than going to the 6:00 a.m. class with the grumpy Old Men. Personally I really enjoy getting smashed on and being forced to figure out how to survive... I think it's helping me properly temper my expectations.

Started bjj a while ago. What he is talking about is definitely an issue. Unfortunately every class is a new technique but there are so many basics a beginner needs to know, but schools can’t teach everything in order because everyone is at different points. So you end up having to figure out a lot on your own online or through books . It works, just not the most efficient or beginner friendly way possible.

Fake being injured or not feeling well if you don't want to offend that person on the spot and sit out that round. If your fear for your safety or health against rolling/training with someone don't roll with them and tell the instructor in private. If the instructor has a problem with that, quit the gym, because its probably a toxic environment. In reality your safety should be the no.1 priority for yourself and for the gym.

I started rolling from day 1. Fast forward 10 yrs of training, 'rolling' has its place but it's way overrated. Looking back if I started all over again I wouldn't mind doing GU methodology of drilling, reflex development and fight simulation first, atleast the first 6 months then you can begin to 'roll' once you understand the nuances of the positions, lessen the chances of injuries and not quit by overdoing it.

@@phuckfumassters anything to lessen the chance of injury is a great investment. the risk we incurred white belt on white belt the first few months was huge. another misunderstood risk is when a higher belt doesn't know they're rolling with a white belt because they have fight/grappling experience and its nogi - that's an injury rich environment
