❗️When I was in college, I gravitated towards Machine Learning because it was the cool thing to do, but the more I got into it, I found it wasn’t the best way to make the impact I want to make on the world.
🧠 Don’t choose a coding path just because it’s “cool”, choose one because it compliments your skills and passions.

This is so relatable and makes me feel so much better. I'm a data science student in my last year. Before starting, all of these ML projects looked so fascinating to me. As I started doing projects and working in research programs for students I started feeling more and more tired with the field. All of this 'cool stuff' I wanted to do was actually the result of a process that I find extremely annoying and tedious, from data collection, data wrangling to the insane amounts of time and resources required to train and run a single model. Last summer I decided to do an internship in SWE and as of right now I decided to deviate towards that field. You get more control on design, projects go beyond designing and evaluating algorithms, there's more creative freedom and actually lots of different types of projects and jobs. And the best part is that as a SWE you can still get to see the 'cool stuff' provided by ML by implementing already pretrained models in a product if necessary, which is the only part I actually enjoyed.

Absolutely, you become an 'integrator' of AI vs a researcher. Especially with all of the new advances like DALLE and GPT3 there is a TON of room to use the APIs put out by the research labs to create meaningful apps.

@@dylanalbertazzi On top of that, people nowadays are missing the fact that the resource, compute and money that has been invested to realize models like DALLE, CHATGPT, etc to reality. Untill or unless you have access to big compute/ money, it becomes really complicated to train even smallest model, which is really frustrating. Even the compute power that a uni can provide is still a fraction of what these models are using.

Wonderful video this is often very much overlooked in planning, many different factors drive us to make decisions, swiftly, however, long-term goals must be factored in. That passage you read was spot on !

This is exactly what is not being talked about in the ML/Data Science bubble. Thanks Dylan for the video. Keep em coming.

omg I feel so validated. That's why I'm building side projects in mobile development. Its been just one week and I feel refreshed. Models are pre-trained now, lots of them. I know you can make custom ones but it doesn't feel the same as building a product from scratch. Would definitely transfer the knowledge I've gained into my new found world though. Wishing you the best of luck Dylan!

Hi, so you're basically saying that being a "software engineer" is better than being "AI expert". But what's AWS got to do with the ability to build applications? Are you just promoting your sponsor (AWS) ? I'm trying to understand...

Being a SWE opens up more opportunities for entrepreneurship. If you focus specifically on ML you will lack the skills to build an app from the ground up. None is better than the other, they are simply different paths that lead to different destinations. I'm not sponsored by AWS but use it extensively in my work.

DISLIKE I don't belive that somebody will give up being a Scientist To just a a Software Developer for the resons you specified. To me this seams like another pitch from another KZbinr coding Influencer that tryes to sell the dream. What is next a course for only 999.00 on how to become a Programmer... Belive me, I was burned by coding gurus and now I can see throught the facade. You are hiding something. I know way to much about Tech Industry to be fooled again!

Hey Limitless, If you have a passion for ML I think you should go for it! These videos are me sharing my thought process and are not for everyone. At the end of the day as long as your work is fulfilling that's what matters!
