I mostly quit it because people were just complaining about stupid stuff. It just became exhausting watching people choose to be miserable

I feel this so hard!!! You have no idea. This is also why I quit pursuing life coaching. I felt like my desire to help people exceeded their desire to be helped, and that ultimately most people seem to enjoy being miserable than working to create real change in their lives. On social media I feel like a lot of memes and reels/TikToks are either self-deprecating, or they make jokes about how life sucks or something like that. People think it’s not a big deal, but over time that kind of content is doing major subconscious damage

i've been without instagram for a year or so and recently redownloaded it just to view my close friends posts. the past few days i've been in a really bad mental health spiral and i've realised that its probably my brain being overwhelmed with seeing the highlights of everyone's lives in my face again. ugh. but i'll feel embarassed if i delete it right after following everyone again :(

Don’t be embarrassed, you’ve gotta do what’s best for you! I recently did the same thing a few months ago. I went back to social media with a plan of only following people close to me and trying to make it a healthier place. I made an announcement that I was back, and then a few days later I realized I hated it and deleted it again. I felt a bit silly doing that lol, but I have no regrets!

I’ve been off for like a month and couldn’t be happier. For me part of it was for activism reasons. Similarly to fab socialism on here it feels like the activism is performative and not a lot of true action. I wanna get “down and dirty” if you will. Like really standing on business. Also I think social media is way to much stimuli like you can go from sad, to happy, to angry to laughing in a matter of seconds. I hadn’t read or written in months. All of our connections like you said are so reliant on social media. Now that I’m off I see how little I text or call anyone and vice verse. My life is so much quieter which is great but also it’s really showing that we don’t actually talk we just rely on social media to tell each other what’s going on in our lives. LAST I’d love the links for the writing groups that you’re in. I’ve been writing more again but I’d love to connect with other writers.

Such a good point about activism! Something that drove me crazy was everyone posting a black square on Instagram for the Black Lives Matter movement, but then doing literally nothing to create real change. My life is a lot quieter now too, and I guess that can be seen as both a good and bad thing. Sometimes I feel like I'm a little bit out of touch with certain things, but overall I'm way happier and my offline connections have prospered. If you're a songwriter too, first of all that's awesome! Definitely check out Vib3 Machine on Discord and r/songwriting + r/wearethemusicmakers on Reddit

@@deannedennis I could truly go on a whole rant about the activism bit. lol. It feels like everything’s feels so curated. When true activism is uncomfortable at times, it’s having real conversations with each other. More then than it’s stepping out of relying on a facist government to anything. Really practicing and being being in community with each other. You can’t do that by typing think pieces and then scrolling for hours on end after. Then black squares pissed me off lol.

@@kiiamarie3881I feel you! “True activism is uncomfortable” is facts. People need to actually try going outside and fighting for something that’s important to them instead of hiding behind their phone screen

Every time I try to engage more with social media by posting my life more, it begins to feel more and more performative. It loses its meaning. As cringe as it sounds, I prefer Reddit so much more, because I’m part of groups and hobbies.

I feel the same way. Nothing cringy about Reddit - there are a lot of great communities there!

Yeah I just got into Reddit it’s definitely dope and seems like you can find community on there that you can meet in real life. All the other apps seems like you gotta curate so much to get attention. And I actually would post social stuff. Like I posted about what’s happening in the DRC barely any engagement….i posted a picture of myself way more engagement. And I’m like sooooo what am i supposed to find a really “cool” picture to draw y’all in?? That’s unhinged af.

I’ve gotten harassed on reddit every time I go on there. I’m not sure which subreddit are the good ones but it feels unsafe to me
@deannedennis

@@alexyssaubrie1606 I’m so sorry to hear you had that experience! Ultimately everywhere in this world, online and offline, there are gonna be some mean and crazy people. Reddit can be a mixed bag, but I think the communities that are smaller or more niche to an interest/hobby tend to be better than the hugely popular subreddits

Performative is exactly it. I was recently scrolling through Instagram cute dog videos when I was home sick, and I started to notice that in some of these "cute dog videos" the dogs clearly looked out of it (there was one where they were putting face masks on dogs)..people are drugging their pets just to get some likes. The whole aspect of performative, attention-getting starts to feel really creepy if you think about all of this for any amount of time, not to mention the aspect of mental health and unhealthy comparison that were so well articulated in this vid.
