The Financial Diet

In this episode of Making It Work, one woman explains why she quit working in the food service industry after living through 2020 and beyond.
Through weekly video essays, "Making It Work" showcases how real people have upgraded their personal or financial lives in some meaningful way. Making your life work for you doesn't mean getting rich just for the sake of it. It means making the most of what you have to build a life you love, both in your present and in your future. And while managing money is a crucial life skill for everyone, there's no one "right way" to go about it - you have to figure out what works best for you, full stop.

The toughest thing about serving the public is if you don’t smile all the time they call the manager and tell on you. The toll on your mental health is terrible. Even if people are trolling you you have to keep smiling and take it .i didn’t even know I had bad anxiety and anxiety attacks until I worked years in food service it’s that bad.

When I first started as a barista I was in NC and made $9.50/hour. Moved & Was also a barista at an sbux in Chicago at a ritzy hotel. Was paid $17/hour plus we got tips. But got furloughed during the pandemic and made WAY more than I was originally making. Was able to save it and buy a house a year later. Haven’t looked back since. Now I am grateful and excited to have holidays and weekends off for the first time in my career. I work from home, I’m salaried. Allat “if you can lean you can clean” crap is out the window. People don’t realize that it’s not just the pay, it’s the treatment. These corporations will work you until you’re exhausted and then convince you that because you’re getting benefits, you are being treated fairly.

Yes!! The pandemic was such a blessing for me. I would’ve never willingly quit my server job as I was addicted to the daily cash. However, when everything shut down I put all my effort into my other job that went permanently work from home. I now have steady predictable income, I am not getting yelled at over someone’s eggs and I’m not wearing out my body carrying heavy trays. I learned a lot but like you said it’s time to put those skills to use somewhere else that appreciates you.

Exactly! $15/hr minimum wage was needed a decade ago. Today it's closer to $19-$20. In 1938, the federal minimum wage was 25 cents/hr. Based on the US government's CPI calculations for inflation(which I think is drastically lower than reality) the cumulative inflation rate between 1938 and 2022 is 1,894%. That makes 25 cents in 1938 equivalent to $19.94 today. If only Roosevelt had the foresight to tie the federal minimum wage to inflation...

I worked in the industry for over eleven years and through the first two years of the pandemic. Quit last year for a production job and never looking back. I loved the dynamics of FOH and kitchen, the stories you hear, the experiences shared with coworkers, even the drama… but that’s just me reminiscing through rose-color glasses; longs were the days spent crying in bathrooms and over kitchen sink’s, the 15 hour shifts, and shitty bosses. Thank you, next - for real.

After 18 years of working for said company, they do not support their baristas at all when it comes to customer issues. Why do you think they have unions starting? I've never been supported. They are a "Just say yes" company. Even if the customer is in the wrong, the stores will give them anything for free just so the customer doesn't try to escalate the situation and have it go up the corporate ladder. Are you a fellow Karen and want to complain about a store? Just call their corporate number and get a free $25-$100 credit! People in the service industry have to play therapist to the person unloading their personal problems because they have nobody to talk to. They also have to play a punching bag because some people feel like attacking and belittling service industry people just because they have had a bad day or it makes them feel better. Sometimes I wish I had a mirror to show people how they are treating me for no reason and so they can stare back at themselves and see how toddler like they are acting. A lot of people who I work with are looking for other jobs. The work load is too much now and they can't hire enough staff. This company started going down hill in my opinion in 2014 when they introduced mobile orders. Lost its coffee shop feel and now is just a number/money hungry corporation. Drive thru stores have to make orders for drive thru, cafe, mobile, and uber eats. That is 4 channels of work that goes to into one store. Now imagine being short staffed? The general public doesn't care about the stores issues of being short staffed and having inventory supply issues every single day. It's all about them. Ok I'm done, I feel like I just had a therapy session lmao. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Everything you said is major facts about SB and I couldn’t have said it any better than myself. In a way SB has made customers feel SO ENTITLED to treat baristas like shit who have the corporate number on speed-dial when their ridiculous order wasn’t made to perfection or when they feel like bossing ppl around bc THEY are having a bad day. I really hope the unions get established soon bc it’s been loooong overdue for that.

I'm legit so glad to hear someone making it work after leaving the food service industry. I just quit my food service job a few days ago and am looking to find a full time graphic design or illustration job, the thing I went to college for. But I never had the courage or mindset to actually quit, since I need the money and with the way applying for jobs is so difficult due to the AI app scanners. But as Ms. Ader mentions, with the pandemic happening, managers really needed to look out for their employees. And unfortunately, I was in that exact spot. I got paid absolutely far below my worth, while being forced to handle things above my pay, and having to deal with the illegal stuff the company did to save a penny - the manager and owners did nothing to support me. I remember even being a target of a racist attack at the beginning of the pandemic since I'm Japanese, while the owners and manager laughed at me during it. I could go on for hours about how awful of a job it was. But it's done wonders for my mental health to quit and I've never felt more positive and confident that things will work out. Positive thoughts to everyone going through the same situation and for those who aren't able to leave just yet. We're all in this together!

I left the service industry in 2017 when I fell at work and blew out my ACL (which my employer covered 100%, no problems at all). I turned my skills in upselling and customer service into a career in sales. I literally changed my life at 35 and started a new career. By 37 I was a sales manager at one of the largest and highest volume dealerships in the South and making 6 figures. Then we had a massive tornado destroy Nashville and the pandemic hit 3 days later. The dealership and all of the vehicles were destroyed from the tornado. No job and a global pandemic plus I’m immune compromised from an autoimmune disease and cancer. I felt like everything was working against me. I fought like hell to get back on my feet and back on top. It was tough. Unemployment was only a fraction of what I was making (Tennessee caps UI at $275 a week so even with the boost I was only making $875 a week, compared to my 2-3k a week working). Fortunately, I am super frugal and banked 75% of my wages while working so I had a healthy rainy day fund and we had my husband’s income. Our mortgage was only $800 a month and no debt so it was easy for us to save so much. The biggest issue was losing my health insurance which was super affordable at $300 a month for the whole family with amazing coverage. I got really motivated to find work right away, landed at some wrong places and finally found the right place last year as an account manager. I have taken a significant pay cut of nearly 60% but I also have extremely generous PTO, excellent insurance that is both affordable and has a low deductible and out of pocket max. I also recently (this month) had a new type of cancer discovered. They have been extremely supportive about time off and assisting me with whatever we need as a family. My advice to servers/ hospitality workers is take your skills you have learned in the industry and start applying for jobs you think you wouldn’t be qualified for. You might be surprised at the results you find. We’ve been able to pay our house off already because of the boost in my income, I was able to buy my new to me car in cash and we still have a healthy rainy day fund. It is always worth the risk of applying, what’s the worst they do, not call you? Take a chance on yourself, believe in your skills and your abilities. You all deserve a place of employment where you are valued and treated like human beings with respect.

I worked in the food service industry before the pandemic, but I left. And the reason why was because I felt like I wasn’t respected anymore. I was a pizza delivery driver. But after I was mugged, I switched to working inside the restaurant. And then they cut my shifts. Sometimes I would only work one 4-5 hour shift per week. And we also had issues with being understaffed which made everything so much more burdensome for us. So eventually I quit once another opportunity came up.

While I love that some are finding freelancing exciting and a great way to make money, I don’t think it’s the right solution for everyone (and I know that’s not what the author was saying). What I hope, is that companies do start humanizing workers again and that the predictability and security of the workplace can return (ideally in the US with the addition of PTO, sick and maternity leave as standard). There’s lots of benefits from being self reliant. There are also lots of benefits from being part of a collective.

My last job was at $20/hr for doing online chat for my state's unemployment. When the state didn't immediately renew our contract despite the great work they said we'd done and instead said they'd just give it until the end of last year, I knew the writing was on the wall. I hoped for the best...but the worst was what we got. They decided to go with another company that put in a bid that was less than half of ours. Oof to those employees. They're getting paid less than us and have to talk on the phone as the state ended up removing the chat option for help with unemployment (one less option for the hearing impaired, way to go 🙄). But I'd rather my job have to let us go and I just file unemployment until I find something better than to have my pay cut to fit what the state would rather pay. At least then, I'm now free to focus on job hunting. And I think I have found my dream company with great pay and a grest work-life balance. So good, I'm scared it's also going to have the rug pulled out from under me, lol. I'll hear next week if I got the job.

@@tvelicia I actually was just called and technically got the job! I was offerred $40K (sounds like I'm going to be salaried, this is a first). But...I stupidly did my math wrong on my salary request. It should actually be: 20x40x52 (the hourly amount times the hours worked in a week, times the weeks in a year) which gives $41,600. I almost said to just forget about the extra $1600 as I really want to work for this company, but decided to just push the envelope and see what happens. I did let it be known that I'm very interested regardless (so watch them come back saying they can't give the $41.6, lol). Hopefully I can get an update on this later today or tomorrow. I loved my food service job and didn't want to stop (the landlord had other ideas) but I'll be the first to admit one of the things I loved the most was my station being BoH. I saw how customer interactions were wearing down on my boss/the owner and how that informed her decision not to seek a new location. That was Thanksgiving of last year. I don't think I can get another position with that kind of pay and basic human respect again (even if it didn't include any retirement or health benefits) and I don't know if I wanna try. But I also don't have any other kind of "professional" experience. I feel like I'm back at square one, trying to navigate the job market without any direction or guidance, with a financial Sword of Damocles hanging, admittedly (or maybe deceptively) high, over my head.

In a related job, I used to be a direct support worker at a group home for people with intellectual/physical disabilities. Never again. They think that you're supposed to survive off of $1 $2 dollars above minimum wage plus the kisses, hugs, smiles, and rainbows. Added to insult is this institution is owned by a well-connected Catholic nun, so you know that people expect MIRACLES EVERYDAY. NEVER AGAIN.

Social services preys on the kind hearts of its workers and exploits in exchange for low wages. It's disgusting how poorly paid people are who are doing such valuable work for human dignity. There's no respect for the dignity of the worker themselves.

For me, the hospitality industry needs to treat workers with a bit of dignity, otherwise even after the pandemic is over it will not be a satisfying job unless you perform spectacular at your job. Imagine having to deal with rude customers on a daily basis, HECK even freakin' call centers who have to endure rude customers on a daily basis. For me, I plan to build multiple passive income after building an emergency fund, it will be a rough one but I intend to free myself from the dehumanizing workforce unless the industry changes itself and starting humanizing workers instead of treating it like a robot.

That industry is very toxic. I worked in a Italian restaurant in New Jersey for years in my teens and 20s. Dish washing, busing, cooking,(making sauces, making dough, making dinners sandwiches.) almost every waiter/waitress was an Adderall addict or had a pretty routine cocaine habit, or drug habit. These places will let anyone cook, that includes GUILTY convicted felons who are disgruntled by "life" beating them down. You really trust food made with the hands of a disgruntled, morally bankrupt, drug addicted, alcohol ridden, guilty convicted felon COOK? I sure as shit don't. But hey, see for yourself.

I don't blame people wanting to quit food service. I worked in food service for many years to pay for college in the 80's. I developed a lot of work habits that still serve me today. Everyone should work at a low paying service sector job to learn a good work ethic and appreciate those that work to serve us.

Get out of the restaurant industry. The Medical industry grew by nearly 20% closing in on nearly 3 million new jobs. Get into sales, finance, real estate, or insurance with most industry growth being over 10%. Get into the trades like electrician, carpentry, or plumbing where job growth has said to grow close to 68% one study said. With all the new technology out there and automation, trade jobs are in high demand. Robotics, solar, housing, maintenance, etc. Get out of the food industry and get into a career that can get you a 60k job or more.

For a brief period earning more on UI with the federal bumper was true, for me. Time away from the industry made me realize how much everyday, I took abuse and for years, let it mostly roll of my back. I had work nightmares that woke me from sleep that I had normalized. Service industry workers are just as human as you and deserve courtesy and respect. Be thankful to your Barista, waiter, know there is more to the job that goes into preparing your brief interaction. Chefs and kitchen crews are likely working for 4-7 hours before the doors even open for business.

I’m a bartender at a high end restaurant. My hourly is $2.13 so I work for tips, and they’re usually decent. However I am an introvert and highly sensitive, & it’s been so hard for my mental health. I had someone write a bad review about me because she had to wait 5 minutes for me because it was busy I had a full bar and making drinks for the whole restaurant. She was upset that I wasn’t all cheery and upbeat as well. It’s not something you can just show up and do your job for, you also have to smile and be friendly and as the saying goes, bartenders are the bests therapists. This is true as I’ve had customers trauma dump on me for 2 hours just to get a shitty $3 tip. I wish I had listened to my parents and gone to college, I could be working from home being an actual therapist making $100 per hour instead of $2.13 with more physical and emotional labor.

This entire speech, particularly the end, just paints these jobs as jobs for teens and early twenty-somethings which, is what Boomers have yakked about all along. Unfortunately the reality is that for many without the skills of the speaker, it's something that they have to rely on for survival. So it's much more today than just a bridge job or career in the short term. Some folks are stuck with these jobs. And UI doesn't last.

In the U.K unfortunately the benefits system is not the same. Many who don't work have conditions attached to the benefits whereby if you don't get a job (any job, doesn't matter if it pays enough to cover food, travel, rent etc) within a specified amount of time they cut the amount you get and sometimes cut it completely. When you do get a job you are still having to receive benefits on top of your wages because you don't earn enough to pay for the basics either. It's a lose lose situation. Those who are in work who can afford the basics are very small in number. Many employers will only hire part timers and yet the social security office expects those on in work government benefits to increase their working hours or face having their financial assistance cut. The problem is that companies prefer part time workers so employees are punished bynot being given full time hours by their employers.

So the biggest issue is you're not guaranteed any amount of hours. Sure, minimum wage being $14 is cool, but you can't make money if they don't have fucking hours. I just got a new job at the beginning of January and it was great initially, they told me the hours were there if I wanted them and I did, but now I'm scheduled 12 hours all week. ALL WEEK. AND THAT'S NOT GUARANTEED, THEY COULD SEND ME HOME EARLY. AND EVERY DAY SAYS ON CALL.

way too much bars, restaurants, vegan places, 1000 sorts of coffee bars etc. Even here (Netherlands) the only thing one can buy in city centres nowadays is food and clothes/boutiques. All other things are on industry-terrains/areas, mostly only accessible by car, or online. Hospitality working hours are lousy (except maybe lunch rooms), there arent enough hours, or too many, and ......everyone together is 1 team. That makes that the weakest link makes or breaks the service/product. Toxic often for trust and not healthy to work in, having loads of alcohol around isnt healthy neither, and 1 new virus and youre sacked again

The food industry sucks in the US I mean form 10 places 8 of them you’ll find a rude employee talking on the phone or working slower that a sloth. I was a server and bartender and yes you have you moody days but is your reputation on the line, if you don’t like your job maybe start looking for a new one but don’t make your costumers suffer because of that, you should treat everyone nicely and leave your problems at the door, expect if the costumer is an asshole then treat them as such.

the servers literally give you a shit service if you don't tip, its quite disgusting especially since they make 2 - 3x the amount of the actual cooks or prep cooks. the minimum wage in denver is 19$ they make about 50 an hour just think about that. quit tipping you are ruining good food, I used to be passionate but seeing how unfair it is I don't care i just study and can't wait to start my own business with ethics and no fucking tips its disgusting. Once i finally switch careers im never tipping servers or anyone else it's not my job to pay you on top of the food I buy. It's your job stop acting like I'm in the wrong for not tipping.Bums.

im from europe, worked in NYC for 11 years paying taxes and everything even if i wasn't a citizen...., EVERY SINGLE bosses i met in my career were ALWAYS abusive and toxic people that would blackmail you, NYC restaurant scene especially for not citizens is super abusive, never wanted to get in trouble, thank god i never was, but if i could bring them to justice i would tell justice where to look for them!!!! all those that doesn't even respect law, they "cash only" to don't pay taxes, they all have their own way to avoid law...but if you try to talk you are fired immediatly, while i am working reaaaally hard for them!!!! it makes me feel so angry! they should be stopped! Brooklyn (bushwick area especially) is full of people like them, they skim money from employees, they treat you like slaves, they take a cut from tips without telling you and if you catch them doing it they always have excuses and they cut your shifts coz you're too smart and so you are a treath..., they use you and humiliates you if you aren't ok with that you are fired quickly...is horrible! i wish restaurant workers could all get togheter against this people, i didn't came to America to steal or be a shitty human, i came here to be part of the community and be a nice man, and then i gotta see these criminals restaurant owners behaving like that..such a shame!!!
