why I quit trucking (homeless)

I quit truckiny due to dispatchers and bad loads that broke dot rules. I have been dot inspected 5 times and have passed 100 percent each time. I do understand every person has there own experience and I only share mine which has been very toxic.

Truck driving basically sucks, especially for OTR drivers. I was regional LTL, drove doubles and pulled 40'/45'/48'/53' straight box trailers. Was in the Teamsters, never slept in my truck(s), slept in hotels (fully paid for) and was home every other night. I don't understand *why* people choose OTR, but to each his/her own. The companies will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat, especially for financial/liability reasons. Mega-carriers could care less about the drivers.

I just saw this video and couldn't agree more with you. I retired this year at 60 as a 30 year Teamster union truck driver. Did you ever notice that the majority of the driver's complaining work for an OTR company? Maybe they should ask Helen Keller as to why most quit. I'm sure that she has some wonderful insight!

I was 32 when I got into trucking. Already use to 9-5 work. I had a young family, a home, etc. The first thing was being stuck with the truck 24-7. No down time away. I went crazy. After lies and long trips away from home. I bailed out. I still have my CDL. My next employer hired me because I had a CDL. Why? If you got a CDL? Your a real deal. Because they don`t hand them out to every one. 24 Years later and I am still with the same company.

Awesome, I still have mine and keep it current. I worked to hard to let it go and I may get a semi or box truck 2 day or on the daily I show it and use it to prove my creditability and get side jobs. Thank you for the comment I hope you stick around

It's a process unfortunately to get the hang of things in trucking when you first start out, no one tells you anything and a lot of dispatchers don't know or don't care and will throw you under the bus if you let them and don't stand up for yourself. When I started out as a rookie I was with a well known mega carrier, I quit and came back 3 times because of all the bs. Then finally I found a good company that treats drivers with respect and follows the law. I been driving now for 5 years. Don't give up man, just cause of a few bad dispatchers. And a bit of advice, don't bother arguing with the dispatchers, calmly tell them you are not gonna do this or that if they try to get you to do something illegal or unsafe because at the end of the day you are the one out there doing the work and your life, cdl and freedom is on the line not their. I had to learn to stand up for myself the hard way too. I would listen to the dispatchers cause I didn't know any better and end up with no hours stuck in the middle of nowhere or show up to a shipper/ receiver and no ones there cause they are closed. Always look up the addresses and closest truck stops etc and take everything the dispatchers say with a grain of salt unless youve worked together for a while and trust them. Cheers.

I've been OTR for almost 10 years now. Started out when I was 24 and be turning 34 before long.. Recently put a application in with a local towing and wrecker company near where I live, less than 24 hours later they asked when I can come in for an interview. I recently relocated back out to Iowa, from Oregon. I grew up in Iowa, but spent some years in Oregon helping my grandma out when I was home. Well she passed away last year, my mom inherited the place, and in May I finally decided to moved back to Iowa. Been driving with the same company now for 6 1/2 years hauling glass on flatbed, double drop, step deck. The work ain't bad, it just the lifestyle that's killin it for me anymore. Just hitting that wall of I can't take this anymore. I want more me time at home. Time to cook in the kitchen, time to enjoy my hobbies like fishing, disc golf, bowling, and gardening. Ability to actually sleep in my own bed, use my own shower, shit in my own toilet for pete sake. All the little things that just been adding up that I can't enjoy living on the road in the cab of a truck weeks at a time. So gonna try my hand at towing and heavy recovery, if it work out anyways. On my way home soon as I'm offloaded anyways to pick up my new hardcopy license in the mail. Even if I take a bit of a pay cut, compared to what I make now, just being home everyday will make up for it. In the process of my move, I also drove all the way down to Georgia in my pickup to help out a friend. Were roommates now splitting the rent/bills. He was going through a real rough spot, would've been homeless. Now hes got an pretty decent job as a manager at a corner store gas station on salary. Hoping all goes well in the transition. Hard work and sweat doesn't bother me, being stuck in the cab of a truck for a decade in todays fucked up society certainly is a bother. If all works out with the new job I'll be screaming hallelujah! I been thinking about getting out for a year or more now. Finally decided, screw it, and threw some fishhooks out there to rip the bandaid off.

I tried the trucking industry. It's not all the smiles and rainbows that the recruiters tell you it is. I walked away. That industry is very demanding. They don't care if you ever get home. My last run was 25 days gone. I quit

Thanks for the comment, yeah they lie to your face they basically do everything to get you in the seat of the truck and then from there they play there games. Even lease ops get jerked around if they deny a load the sales team and or dispatcher has them sit for 3 days not running and not making money. @@AlienAscend The why I quit part, the reason I chose to view this video, starts at 13:30 and can stand on its own just fine. Not everybody wants or has time or is interested to hear your life story. To me befor 13:30 you beat around the bush with other than. I watched the whole thing. My unsolicited advice, take that CDL and find a job driving sub 26,000 lbs..That CDL will open doors you haven't considered in ways you never imagined. Find a dairy distribution company near you, be prepared to get in shape doing local business delivery as it's not easy but it is steady. Your CDL gives you credibility outside of Commercial classA trucking. Good luck! Thanks for posting.

I been hauling dry van for 8 years and been through lots of things 😆 and I'll tell you cause the inflation I lost my job but since I been home im actually got Hired local work I'm happy but yet afraid of changes man I really don't understand why people want to be sleeping in the truck rather than in their own bed and eating in their own table. I can give you some recommendations for decent companies that will not treat you badly. At this point you're homeless doing doordash when you could be making 80k a year easily absolutely easily without even much effort

Low hanging power lines are required to be 14’ high, tight backing is a given, since when can’t you back up on a private road. Your info sucks.

I said backing up on a service road and then explained it was crossing an oncoming lane, green dot handbook clearly states no reversing on a service or private road. You should Pau more attention. I've felt with low hanging power line that had a lower spot and it was lower then 13ft 6 inch. A few of my otr friends have experienced that as well so it's not that rare. I do appreciate your comment because you took the time to write it, if only you took your time to listen better 🤔

You have described a few bad truck driving employer experiences. You had said at the end your OTR experience was vastly better. Why don’t you try and find an OTR company or a better regional company?

Great question, I have looked at a lot of other otr and regional trucking companies it's been a while though. I know fuel is lower now then last time I looked but a lot of places weren't paying much to drivers because of fuel prices. Smaller companies in my experience are more of the rule breakers and are toxic. The otr was way better with equipment and safety I think that may be due to the fact them being huge company with a lot of rules and micro manage policies. I might go back to trucking at some point but as of now it doesn't feel right.

I started in the industry in 1984 as an owner operator, I have been happy with my decision. It was a hard way of life starting, about 2 years into my experience it got easier. I have had some hard times but I have enjoyed it. This career is not for everyone. I have been contracted to the same company since I wish you luck with what ever you do. Just find what makes you happy it could be driving a dump trucks. Stay safe and enjoy your life.

Truck driving is not a job. It's a way of life. Not many jobs demand that you work 70 hour weeks . 14 hour days trying to not crush 4 wheelers that want to play tag with you. It's very hard to find a driving job that allows you to have life. I've been at it 30 years and I'm 61. I'm not sure how long I can stay in this field. I used to love it. Now I just put up with it because it pays the bills.

I have camped and travelled all over Canada and the US.I also worked Psychiatric 25 years and took an interest in solving homelessness. I came up with what I would do in this horrible inflationary climate if I was homeless. I would go to the Library and you tube to learn all I could about digging into the side of a hill to make a Hobbit Home with a small wood stove, 4x4 timbers, insulation, plywood and plastic covering. Solar lights, fridge / freezer. Living free or go on a farm and pay 50 bucks a month and maybe do some work or garden your own food and preserves. I know a guy who loved doing this on a farm for years.

If you are strong enough to work, you have no problem. until I got old, I could handle living rough. you should look into moving cars for dealers. if that don't work, you can hotshot for the oil industry, move to Houston

If you dont mind Physical labor try Melton Truck Lines. Its flat bed trucking. Good equipment and good dispatchers. Not hard to make $1000.00 a week take home pay. Most Deliveries are done between 7am and 5pm.

I did melton on my first year … min is 3 weeks out …. You will ur ass of , harping and securing to run the load 400 miles!! And then at the end of the you’ll take home 1000$ a week . An Uber drive can make more money …. Screw melton and screw trucking ….

​@@jeddah1382Depending on what city you live in and you drive in, you might make more for Uber, but you still have to pay rent. Send a bills. If you need truck driving and you're making a 1000 a week. And if you're homeless, it's not a big deal because you can live in your truck or if you have an apartment, you can get rid of your apartment stack your money for a year for longer then you'd be able to get a place or just keep stacking your money.

It seems like ppl miss their family and are tired of being on the road. Also, luxury amenities such as being in your own bed and shower. I have heard people saying getting paid less than minimum wage, but that seems weird because you drive 10 hours at average .5 per.mile. it's like 300 per day

There's a lot of waiting to get loaded and unloaded and trailor washing, road side repairs and trailer repairs, also waiting for next location pick ups and traffic and construction and stoping at weigh stations. I'm sure there's a few others I missed that really effect your money. Imagine doing door dash in a great market where your making 27 an hour and get ur own bed and shower and not deal with as much stress. I definitely don't think company truck drivers make enough. Drivers do nearly all the work and brokers and dispatchers make more. Just food for thought. I mentally can't deal with it like I said in the video.
