I could immediately tell the difference with the Lav mic but I’m using earbuds so maybe it’d be different listening through speakers.

Good video, I never considered the lighting situation. My understanding is that the panels should be closer to your mouth height based on your recording position. Based on that info, some of the panels may be on the high side.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tonnen panels. I'm building a home studio using a number of hand-made fiberglass panels taken from a radio station that was being decommissioned, and was looking for something to fill in the gaps in my panel coverage. The Tonnen panels look very similar and probably have similar acoustic properties. I haven't purchased them yet but will definitely use your affiliate link once I'm ready. Cheers from Los Angeles!

My panels broke after I had installed them on the wall. They fell off and the tabs broke off on 2 of them :(

the panels work by blocking sound wave reflections/reverberations so you need to make sure that where you put the panels you are actually talking and doing your audio. It all works like a mirror.

Nce video, very helpful. Just picked up the blue ones. I was surprised how big they are, which I guess will be a good thing. BTW, they just released white panels, though I opted not to get them in my case.

I know you may not see this but dude I really enjoyed this video. I too love elgato stuff, and while I may have decided these panels aren’t for me I think they make your space really stand out! Earned yourself a new sub, I look forward to your future videos.

You should still try to go for treatment even if you use a LAV...

I'm running a Rode NT-1A, I get a lot of white noise from my pc fans, I imagine they would have a larger effect for me than they did for you considering mine's a condenser mic? What do you think?
@geezer2tech154 Жыл бұрын
I enjoyed your video and kudos for mentioning the environmentally unfriendly packaging. I only noticed a slight difference with headphones but I think you had some issues with placement of the panels. Your primary locations should be at the horizontal plane of your mouth. Primary locations would be directly opposite your mouth, on the sides half way between your mouth and your microphone (just directly to the sides if using a lavalier) and directly opposite the microphone's pick up pattern when using a directional mic. I think lavalier microphones need the most room treatment, it's just that your treatment was ineffective (more panels and treatment, but with the greatest potential for improvement between untreated and treated). You probably did have some light loss with the panels on the wall, but if they had been all blue you would have had blue reflected light all over the room. I just had some dual function panels built which will rest on my product review table. The white fabric will serve as reflectors to soften the light, while the panels will absorb sound.

I could easily hear a difference in this video - It is ofcourse always debatable if it is worth the time and money spent on the improvement - I would say it is a better viewer experience with the panels - but since they are expensive i am sure we can find other panels that are less branded with same quality and cheaper priced or perhaps get something way better at the same price.

The kitchen placement was a really bad idea. It's too close to the oven, and while it's not THAT much of a fire hazard, over time the vapors of your cooking will oil them up pretty badly.

After 2 years of using 28 panels and having to move them I can tell you: They work great, the strips are awesome and there is NO need to drill them to the wall. Why they include so many screws is beyond me.
@mvpmikey7 ай бұрын
Quality of sound aside, it's other purpose is to not disturb other people at home. It will not sound proof anything, but helps reduce sounds from both in and out the room. It's great for people who lives on an apartment and not allowed to drill the wall.

Nice content and very informative! I'm elgato fanboy but i wont buy those sound panel because its too much pricey for my wallet 😅. Btw, in your comparison video with and without elgato panel i can hear the difference, quite good i think! I can hear and guess which with the panel and without the panel easily with my eyes closed 😊. I just made 6 piece sound panel [120x60 cm] for my youtube studio using rockwool, cloth and wood frame and its only cost less than 65$ and works really well. Once again, thanks for making good content. [Sorry for my broken english😅]

Calling Elgato wave panels "very very expensive" and then saying you like the "Tönnen Acoustic Panels" which Cost 4 times!! as much, for a SINGLE pack of 2 Its really REALLY hard to compare them ,when they are priced so very different, not saying Elgato's are cheap, but they work, and are good for their price You might as well say "I like driving my Bugati much better than my Ford Punto" Apart from that, I think you made a really good video, and showed things very well, so good on you
@jsyntaxmedia Жыл бұрын
It's not the cost per square foot covered, but the cost per overall sound reduction. So to achieve the same effect with the tonnen panels, you'd have to possibly buy more of foam panels. in the end, it's really about what type of look you're going for. I realize the tonnen panels could be more expensive but I prefer the look of panels over foam, which is invaluable!

I think there's 2 major red flags that these panels don't belong in the professional workflow of somebody with a $2k+ camera setup: It was made by Elgato, who makes overpriced game streaming gear for children. It was advertised on LTT, a channel which exclusively makes infomercials targeted at children. They're salesman for commissions and ad space, not reviewers. You seem like someone who should have already known the "tech channel" business model before falling for the marketing. If you want to know how to make a room sound good, go to somebody who actually knows professional audio. But I'll tell you now it's a lot harder and more expensive than getting good video. Foam panels, even extremely overpriced foam panels, do about as much as hanging a painting on the wall... which is a tiny bit at high frequencies, and essentially nothing at the lower "roomy" problem frequencies. Usually, moving the microphone position slightly has a bigger difference. Thats most likely why the highly directional shotgun mic had a difference when the omi lav didn't (when it should have). The position of your head changed. Also, the effective solutions usually don't look good, Because they look like a sound booth. You buy foam panels for how they look not because they work.
