Actually, i use dual 27 inch 4k monitors with an m3 max macbook. I also use this with windows for development environme reqyiring it. It is fine. Not 5k, but still very usable, and I would think much better than getting low resolution monitors. Apple uses bicubic scalling for fonts, icons, etc., when not vector based. However for images, it will not make any difference. It is text, bitmapped icons, and scrolling through some kinds on content where it makes a difference. Apple could, if they wanted to, add the bitmaps to support the very common 27inch 4k, and add alternative scaling approaches, but chooses not to. What i would love, is if they update the studio display and find it in their hearts to reduce the price even a few hundred for at least for the vesa mount. Maybe a budget version withot speakers, microphone, and 999, but with all the apple quality. Also, with default option to use their current standard for color space, plus a selectable wider gamut native for photography. Otherwise, please start supporting 4k properly. It takes some engineering, but nothing astronomical.

This chart primarily refers to how efficiently macOS handles scaling. It’s more about the technical effort macOS has to do behind the scenes rather than the actual sharpness and clarity of the visual result you experience. A higher ppi like 163 does mean the mac has to use fractional scaling but it should still give you increased benefits in clear and sharper text than say a 109 ppi display. Thanks for the video.
@SXZ-dev2 ай бұрын
It's not fractional scaling if you run the display at 1080p, a 4K display running at 1080p is the same for MacOS as a 5K display running at 1440p, it's halved resolution. The only thing apple can't handle is trying to run a 4K display at weird middle-of-the-road resolutions like 1440p which is somewhere in between native and halved. But for the overwhelming majority of people you can run any 4K display at 1080p and have full retina graphics, and 1080p is what most of the world is used to anyways so it's not a big deal

The image is just as crisp if you use the 4k display at 1080p, this needs to be reinforced because a lot of people are getting the wrong impression and buying 2k displays for no reason. Any 4K display WILL look more crisp on macos than a 2k display, the issue SOME people have is that the 1080p resolution needed to run retina graphics on a 4K display is too large for them. They prefer the look of Native 2K, perhaps because they were used to 1440p displays beforehand, but to get Retina with 2K resolutions on MacOS you need a 5K display, that's the issue people have. FFS don't buy a 2K display and don't splurge on a studio display if you don't really need the extra space, the image will not be any more crisp than it is on a 4K display running at 1080p. Only do it if the scaling at 1080p really feels too large for you The scaling issue is simply that "Retina" graphics need 2x as many pixels as your display can handle so to get Retina graphics you need to halve the native resolution of your display and tell MacOS to run at that halved resolution, MacOS calls this "HiDPI mode" but it looks fundamentally the same on a 5k display running at 1440p as it would on a 4k display running at 1080p the only difference is at 1440p there's more screen real-estate
@freecourseplatformenglish2829Ай бұрын
Absolutely, you someup everything beautifully if you like fhd scaling on 27inch 4k display then buy it else go with 2k and run it natively without any scaling.
@zachywacky119 күн бұрын
Also, like, the scaled 1440p option on 4k doesn't look bad at all, and the performance hit is negligible in most cases. Comparing to 5k you compromise on slight crispness and a bit of artifacting, and comparing to 1440p you compromise on artifacting a bit?? But you notice the pixel grid of 1440p far more than you would ever notice the artifacting of 4k
@pasqualeconvertini40833 күн бұрын
exactly this! I actually moved from my 2k monitor to a 4k one to get crispier image. If you buy a 2k monitor and connect to your mac, you'll find out that the image is not as crispy as it would be on the 2k. It's much better having a 4k monitor with 2k scaled resolution instead of a 2k monitor with a not scaled 2k resolution.
@freecourseplatformenglish28292 күн бұрын
Update: I recently purchased a 2k monitor and use it at native resolution. The quality is definitely not good because the PPI is 110, while my MacBook has a PPI of 220. My problem with 4 K is that I like the screen space on a 2 K monitor. At 1080p, you can't open two windows side by side. Best solution: Right now, the best solution is a 5k display, but unfortunately, it's not widely available, and a Studio display is too expensive.

Solid video and good to understand, Apple really did figure out optimum PPI way ahead of the curve, this mirrors my experience. I personally found 4k @ 27" unworkable, at the same time 1080P is too enlarged on 27". 1440p is the sweet spot at 27" and double the scaling to 5k (5120x2880). I hope for high refresh displays to grace this space in the future. Mac or Windows I would agree and avoid 4K(same with ultra-wides, but sometimes you have to experience it to believe it)...

Gotta warn people not to get a native 1440p monitor for MacOS though. It's pretty much the worst of both worlds. It's better to get a 4K display and downscale from 5K (which MacOS does automatically). There are workarounds but it's not great.

Same issues for me running a 4K Dell 27" monitor. Apple seems to default to a looks like 1920 x 1080 scale which is 2x scale which is Integer scaling and is the best option for sharpness. But in reality I prefer 2560 x 1440 looks like scale but ends up less crisp because it is a non-integer scale. Splitting up pixels is not possible, you always want a scale factor of x1,x2,x3. Smart to buy a 1440 monitor where you can use 100% or x1 scaling so no problems dealing with scaling.

(talking like a 2% difference) How does it affect your performance so much on your much more powerful machine? Also, like, you can just switch to the unscaled resolution when doing demanding tasks. Most of the time when you are, the UI isn't being actively used anyway. Idk, I had a 27 inch 1440p imac and a 28 inch 4k monitor and the 4k monitor looks leagues better when scaled.
