First video I’ve seen from your channel and I’ve subbed! This is just what I needed to see. I’ve wanted a freeze dryer for 8-9 years and I’ve only seen positive reviews which has fuelled my longing. Realistically do I need one? No. Do I want to store food for 25 years? No. Do I hike/camp and need lightweight meals? Am I successful gardener with an abundance of produce to store? Not enough to need a freeze dryer. Do I like freeze dried fruit? No. I’m also in Ontario and the repair situation is a problem. I think I can finally relax now and stop obsessing about getting one. I do still think they are cool and for many people very worth having, but not for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

New subscriber here - so refreshing to find someone who doesn’t want a freeze dryer! There are still a few homesteader KZbinrs out there who don’t have one. I can’t justify the cost for us, we don’t have the space and I really don’t care for freeze-dried food. I know there are many people who absolutely love them but it’s just not an appliance I will ever purchase. Canning, dehydrating, air-drying and freezing our food is the food preservation methods we’ll stick with. Thank you for sharing your reasons you got rid of yours.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I’m happy to have you here!

Definitely appreciate your honesty and agree with almost all of your statements! My wife and I live in a 101 year old farm house and love ours... The the Freeze dryer is very loud and heavy.. that being said a small industrial cart is the solution you unplug it and move it.. I grew up canning with my mother so I have about 600+ jars in my small shop the downside with canning for me is having to store them where they wont freeze. after about 2 years of research we made the jump and purchased one. We definitely do not use it as much as I originally thought it would. It's definitely not for everyone and unless you have the Time and surplus of money it's definitely not the right answer for everyone or every situation!!

freeze dried food has never sounded appealing to me. I don't like one use expensive kitchen items either. I know instapots can do a few things, but I am retired, I don't need to hurry meals. Air fryer don't have. popcorn maker, don't have. I am happy with my kitchen aid mixer that does a lot of things, my dutch oven, crock pot. All the one use items take up real estate in your kitchen. You are so nice to always explain why you do things, but no reason to justify your decisions.
@FairlyRootedАй бұрын
I totally get that! Single-use kitchen gadgets can take up so much space, and if you’re happy with the tools you already have (and use often), there’s no need to add more. Your setup with the KitchenAid, Dutch oven, and crock pot sounds perfect-versatile and timeless. And thank you for saying that; I just like to share my thought process in case it helps anyone else! 😊
@bloodlove93Ай бұрын
i can understand everything except the first part, not appealing? it's literally just had the moisture sucked out,just rehydrate\ reconstitute it,it's perfectly natural and not weird. if you do it yourself you can even math out the amount of water to add,and it's great to store food long term,over two decades... obviously not something to consider in old age as you'll never make it that far but for everyone less close to their inevitable demise that's highly valued.

Thank you for being honest with your reasons for getting rid of your freeze dryer :) Final thought, Many of us have been in tight spots and had to sell something to get through it. I bought my harvest right freeze dryer two years ago before a year before I retired. I freeze dry anything I can get my hands on cheap. My friends said your crazy it's to expensive. Now there asking me to do things for them. I looked at current products that other companies offer in stores. Im a basics cooker. Home cooked from scratch. My leftovers go in the freeze dryer. I'm never food insecure. I'm very conscious of electricity costs. Everytime I run a thirty hour cycle it cost two dollars on my bill. Before I bought my dryer I looked at prices of appliances. A good refrigerator 2000.00. Freeze drier 2800.00. I trade with my friends for fresh veggies thru out the summer for veggies and canned jelly's. Everything that you freeze dry is worth something to someone. So as a retired person I recommend a harvest right freeze dryer

Thank you for this video! The people I watch on KZbin were gifted a freeze dryer and love them and promote them, would they feel that same way if they paid for it with their own money. We live in a area that has almost the cheapest electric in the USA, so that isn't an issue. But all through this last gardening season, we couldn't use the freeze dryer because it wasn't working right. Think they made them too fast and quality went out the window! Then after months of going back and forth with the company (we barely got started before the 1 year warranty ran out!) We were finally able to use it. It's in our garage and when the weather turned cold it was too late to use. Now it's sitting there till spring! Wish we'd had someone like you speaking more sensibly BEFORE we got it.
@AllOuttaSpoonsАй бұрын
We had a similar issue. Took a BBB review to even get it fixed. They lied to me on multiple occasions (provably) and finally shipped it back for repairs but came back with a dead pump which had been fine before. Sorry you had a similar experience.
@michellenoble442325 күн бұрын
I have a freeze dryer. I love certain things about it, dislike others. They are very noisy. They don't function well in a garage or shed that gets too hot in the summer (we're in Texas) or too cold in the winter, so you really should try to locate it in a somewhat climate controlled space. It can process a lot of food efficiently, but one thing I hate is that my batches often finished just as I was going to bed, or at midnight, etc., which meant that I would have to wait up to get the freeze dried product into mylar bags and sealed when my 68 year old body really wants to be in bed! I love snacking on freeze dried fruit & veggies, and love always having freeze dried eggs, cheese, meat, spice mixes and bone broth, etc., to reconstitute and easily use. We have chickens, a large garden and orchard. There are times when my dehydrators are all running, my freezers are overflowing, and I've run out of energy to do more canning. That's when a freeze dryer shines. I keep our freeze dried foods in storage totes in a guest room closet, and have been grateful to have such high quality stored food available as needed, especially when the power goes out. I don't have to worry about it being perishable, and I know the quality of the food I'm producing on the farm is far superior to what I can get in the stores. Like most things in life, there are pros and cons. Each person needs to make their own choice. BTW, I did the math, and it cost us only about $15 more/month in electrical to run the freeze dryer nearly continuously. Given how much produce I've freeze dried during harvest months, that $15 is easy to justify. Totally respect your reasons for selling your freeze dryer, and some day I may sell mine, but I'm grateful to have it as I near 70 because its a lot easier to do than canning, and I don't want to run more freezers than I already have. God Bless!

But honestly, starting small and focusing on what makes sense for you and your husband is such a smart and practical approach. Maybe just pick a few key items you use often and build your pantry from there at a pace that works for you. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be enough! And I totally agree-not everyone needs food for 25 years. Sometimes, it’s okay to step back from the hype and just focus on living simply and sustainably. While everyone has the right to think and believe what they wish, I wanted to offer a little balance to this opinion being offered. You say you value space. I think everyone does. So important! This is something that I have loved about my freeze-dryer. I have four freezers. Each one was purchased at different times to give me more room. The last one was bought so I could freeze the pork from my pig. Since I started freeze drying, I have opened up room in my freezers, and my pantry has also opened up in space as I have FD some of that. We are avid hikers, and taking food along that weighs practically nothing is fantastic! So far, I have not regretted this purchase. I'm sure I'd think differently if it had broken down a lot, as others have. But so far, this has been my experience.

I am sure most people who get an FD like their freeze dryers and good for them if they get the use out of it they were hoping/planning for but am doubtful it would be the right thing for me. Sure, the longevity of the freeze dried products sounds amazing but like you I don't like the texture. Also, I can, dry, and freeze and am happy with how long they store for me and I don't have to flip an exorbitant bill first to get started. In addition, when I preserve food I don't prep for years down the road but for my stored foods to last me long enough to the next garden, foraging, fishing, hunting season or maybe another year if one of my crops happens to fail. I am also very noise-sensitive and get very irritated when I'm surrounded by a constant hum; wouldn't want my family having to deal with a grumpy growling me all the time! Truly appreciate how you broke it down that it is not an asset for everybody! Btw, I think it was smart that you parted with something that didn't bring you the kind of joy you expected to pay for your needs!

The idea of spending thousands for a freeze dryer, and then spend hundreds on electricity, I can buy alot of prepacked freeze dried herbs and veggies for thousands of dollars.
@bloodlove93Ай бұрын
"a lot" that depends on what you quantity as a lot and for how long,especially if you're talking multi generational. also fd goods sold to you aren't much better than anything else you can buy nowadays, tons of chemicals and preservatives etc in most,those without cost more,and if you're a picky eater pre packed is even worse. not saying it's flawless but there's more to it than you seem to be thinking.
@tanyalynnharkness-huggins4111Ай бұрын
@bloodlove93 well, one youtuber said she ran her freezerdryer for 1 week when she got it and it cost $500 extra in electricity. That could be up to $2000/month. You have to have purchase/grow the food you put in it as well. If that is a cost you can justify for your family then good for you and yours. Everyone has to decide what is best for their family. My husband offered to purchase us one, but after doing the research and what we would actually utilize it for I decided it was not sensible for our family.

It's rare to find someone speaking for their reasons against something like a freeze dryer, but you thought these reasons out and that's important and valid! If I did not like the texture of freeze dried foods, I think that would be my #1 reason for not shelling out that kind of money for the machine. For me, I would really like one and my hubby is less enthusiastic about it so I am doing the best I can to preserve what we have with the means we have, but also making a list of the things we could have accomplished additionally with a freeze dryer in each season particular to our circumstances. If I cannot compile a year's worth of projects (from our garden/hobby farm) where a freeze dryer would add value to our pantry, then it makes sense not to get one. Thank you for sharing your viewpoint and reasons for removing a freeze dryer from your home.
@FairlyRootedАй бұрын
Thank you! I think your approach is really smart-figuring out what’s worth it for your own circumstances is key. For me, the texture of freeze-dried foods was a big deal, and since we eat most of what we preserve fairly quickly, other methods like dehydrating or canning work better for us. I love that you’re making a list of projects to see if a freeze dryer would really be worth it in your case. That’s such a practical way to decide! It’s great to hear other perspectives, and I appreciate you sharing yours. 😊

Thank you, was interesting hearing from your perspective about freeze driers. I don't mind white noise and also don't have most of those concerns, 'except' for that all important one you mentioned about not being able to fix them yourself/ourselves, or even hire someone locally to fix it if it breaks. that one really hit home with me. Shipping cost to repair it sounds bad. I still want one, however I'll be thoroughly looking into whether or not there is a freeze dryer repair available in my area. Repairing them is not something I often hear youtubers talking about, so I'm grateful for your opinion.

I agree with your 10 reasons. My hubby ordered my a freeze dryer in September 2024 from Harvest Right through Home Depot to get his additional military discount which brought the price down to $2500 for a medium. It was a very nice surprise, however I’m like you - did not think paying $2500 was too much for me. I also grew up with little money - so that expense was too much for me. I also researched that it costs 3.13 an hour to run a freeze dryer. Another expense I couldn’t justify. I also didn’t see myself truly using it that often to make it worth that expense. I am fortunate that last fall 2023 my hubby bought my the AA941 double decker canner for over $400. I use that all the time. I will continue to use that all the time on an outside burner for preserving. He was disappointed when I told him I was not picking it up when it was ready for pick up. But I feel very relieved to not have that expense.

I looked into a freeze dryer when all these homesteaders started using and promoting them. If you use their link they get compensated, and a few even had a dehydrator donated because they had a huge following. When I looked at the price, it was crazy! I can, freeze and dehydrate things myself. I did the math and figured if I took the cost of the freeze dryer, cost of maintenance, plus cost of electricity, I could use that money and buy the few things I’d want that are freeze dried, and spend less money. Dehydrated foods shrink so they’re space saving too. Also, the dehydrator warms my room since I mostly dehydrate in spring and fall. There are a few things that are really good freeze dried, like strawberries, pineapple and bananas. (Dried banana chips can hurt my teeth since I accidentally had a couple fracture-long story). Can you imagine the amount of those fruits I could buy with the thousands I’d save? Even though you said you needed the money, good call on selling the freeze dryer. I think it’s an overpriced novelty item. Loved this review. New subscriber to check out your other content. (PS, I grew up poor and had some rough years the first decade after I moved out as an adult, married, children and life happens). I do have a small amount of freeze dried foods I’d bought to put up “just in case”. The rest of preserving I do is a working pantry, with a goal of a years worth of food.

Thanks so much for sharing your perspective, Cathy Ann, and for subscribing! 😊 I can absolutely relate to where you’re coming from-freeze dryers are a huge expense, and like you, I just couldn’t justify the cost when there are so many other ways to preserve food effectively. Your math makes total sense to me, too. With all the money saved, you could buy a ton of freeze-dried goodies or invest in other areas of your pantry! I think a lot of people get caught up in the hype without considering what really works for them. It’s great to hear about how you’ve thought it through and made a system that works for your family. Thank you for the kind words about the video-it means a lot! ❤️

Hello fellow Ontarian 😊. I have wanted a freeze dryer for so long, but we are off-grid and so I can't wrap my head around a solution to my problem 😆Your video caught my eye and I am glad it did, as I found your channel in the meantime. It also made me feel a little better about the fact that I will probably never own one 😉 Although I do love freeze-dried fruit, and green beans 😋 I feel I could buy years of these foods for the price especially since there is no feasible way for me to run one for 3 days, and I don't have a place for it as well. So thank you for making me feel better. New subscriber here!

Thank you for your review of your freeze dryer. This is the first video that I have seen with negative comments of a freeze dryer. I have wanted one - but do not have the room for one (otherwise I probably would have one by now). But this has changed my mind. I don't need one I wanted one because it seemed to be the next great thing for a wanna be homesteader. This is basically common-sense information and a great eye opener for anyone considering buying a freeze dryer.

I liked your point about the not-great taste and mouth feel of FD products. Also, it was good you mentioned that there's no need to buy every recommended prepper supply, which can be overwhelming and expensive.

We bought a freeze dryer because we have been determined to eat the vast majority of our food that we have grown or foraged. We put our freeze dryer on a rolling platform so we can move it anywhere on the same floor. We are off grid using solar power and so don’t pay for the extra powers usage. We can’t use it during the winter and still use two freezers and can other things as well as having a large cold storage for all our squash, potatoes. Beets, Cabbage, carrots, onions and garlic. But I am still grateful for what we have freeze dried. It is great to free up space in our freezers.

Thank you so much for ur honesty. Subscribed! There’s been such a big push on social media for freeze dryers but I think ppl should really do the math on return on investment. I’ve seen content creators who always talk about frugality, then all of a sudden start pushing the freeze dryer. It makes me lose trust in the messages they deliver. I’ll stick with canning, freezing and dehydrating but to each his own 😅

Lady you are so right about everything. I was talking to my neighbour who has a freeze dryer and she said they had to put it in their garage because it was so loud and when she said it takes 24 plus hours. I’m thinking I couldn’t be bothered plus the cost of hydro. I’ll stick to canning my food. It’s takes less time. The one thing I do like using the jar sealer for is lettuce. It keeps the lettuce fresh for 2 weeks. So I can buy several heads when they are on sale. I do the same thing. When we need extra cash I sell things that are taking up room or I haven’t use very often . 🇨🇦👍 Great video.

I have a small freeze dryer that I bought in September and it is so quiet. It's like my refrigerator. A lot of people complain that there is extremely loud but I've never been back with mine and it's just a light humming sound. Maybe when you get into the medium and large they are a lot louder so I'm glad I only have a small.

I am so glad that you did this video! I have been pickling and water bath canning for over 4 decades and have recently retired. I have more garden space and have been enjoying planning and thinking about more growing and preserving. I have thought about a freeze dryer as I have limited freezer space. I do dehydrate, mainly herbs and flowers, but wanted to expand. I don’t presently have a pressure canner and was wavering between investing in a freeze drier or an electric pressure canner. You have helped me make a decision. I also pay rural Ontario hydro rates. They are more than double the urban rates, but the silver lining is that I can run the hydro at any time of day in the country. In my urban home, I was used to doing everything between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am for the cheaper rate! 😅

Another point is, I am older. I have done things traditionally. The freeze drier is not traditional. My grandparents and great-grandparents survived Canning and Dehydrating. Preserving with traditional methods, and did quite well. I am a "square" possibly ...but I think the value of food preservation-- the way it has always been done-- is a very important heritage skill.

I like hearing a different perspective on freeze dryers. It's a Huge expense, when you don't believe in going into debt and making payments, which I believe A Lot of people do. So, thank you for making this video. I'm good with dehydrating, canning and freezing. Way less investment, and energy expense. I see them for sale quite frequently on Facebook marketplace, probably for the same reason you mentioned. Most people don't have an excess of $3,000 plus if they have a financial emergency. Plus a freeze dryer is not a Need, it's a want, in my opinion, with a hefty price tag.
@FairlyRootedАй бұрын
I totally agree with you! It’s easy to get caught up in buying the latest gadgets, but when you’re trying to avoid going into debt, it makes sense to stick with methods like dehydrating, canning, and freezing. They’re tried and true, and the energy costs are so much lower. I’ve noticed the same thing about freeze dryers popping up on Facebook Marketplace too! Seems like a lot of people realize they didn’t need it after all. I definitely see it as more of a want than a need, and that hefty price tag makes it feel more like a luxury than an essential tool. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I really appreciate what you brought up on this topic. The only thing I look at differently is I would have liked to be able to make freeze-dried raspberries to add to chocolate. But that is a pretty expensive toy to have just for that. Lol. I do agree and feel the same way on every point you made. I have wondered if I’m missing something. Now that I’ve watched this I can be happy with what I already can do. I can, dehydrate, freeze, and ferment. These are all exciting skills to learn and I’m happy with each of these. I can see a reason why people would want to have it, and how many people could be very happy with it. But for the expense that they are for right now I think I’m good with what I already have in place. Maybe someday when they perfect the machine and the price may go down there may be a time that I could try it. But for now I’ll keep working with what I have. You just confirmed how I already felt about it all. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@FairlyRootedАй бұрын
I’m so glad this resonated with you! 😊 And I totally get what you’re saying about raspberries for chocolate - that would be a fun treat! But yeah, the cost is a tough one to justify, especially when we can do so much with the methods we already have. It’s great that you’re comfortable with your canning, dehydrating, freezing, and fermenting - those are such valuable skills! I agree, maybe one day the price will come down or the machines will improve, but for now, it’s wonderful that we have so many options available to us. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

Alot of these reasons are why we waited for the market to branch out. I do not like spending that kind of money on something either. And even less when there is only ONE brand available. We waited and decided on a Cube from Prep4Life because it eliminated alot of these reasons. Biggest one is moving it. The cube comes with a stand on caster wheels with shelves!! It also has the option to vacuum seal jars. So all our FD stuff goes in mason jars I sell loose leave teas and dried herbal plants. So it also is a tool for us. Definitely not something I would recommend as an everyday kitchen gadget ❤ Thank you for your Honest Opinion

Thank you for being real and saying why you do not like a freeze dryer. When i heard it had to be on for as long as it does i felt like it was a rich mans toy. I been looking at dehydrator and just could not afford one. Then i was in storage and opened a box that has been closed for 10 years. I found a brand new dehydrator that was given to us years ago as a gift. I was so excited about finding that and not needing to purchase one. It is bigger than the ones i was looking at so even better. It is still in storage because a week before that i was cleaning kitchen and found my mother in laws exact same dehydrator. No need to pull ours out of box if i can use hers that is already opened. This spring i plan on using that one on stuff so i do not have to freeze some things. I also have on my bucket list to make jerk but i want to make Korean flavored jerky. Now that i know i have a dehydrator i need to look into making different things.

I appreciate this video. 😊 So many people with freeze driers look down their nose at people who either don't want one or don't prefer them. I relate to most of your reasons especially the fact that I don't need food that will last 25-30 years. I have a tiny house and I don't have the space for the things we have let alone alone having the money to spend on it. While we don't live in an area with high electric, I am trying to reduce my dependance on so many things that run on electricity, not add to it. Which is why I don't have an instant pot either rather I have a stove top canner. I do dehydrate but a lot of what I dehydrate I do either in my gas oven or air dry. I will say I do buy a few freeze dried foods...I love freeze dried strawberries...but it's not worth the expense of the freeze dryer for the few things we can frugally buy. I am happy for people who love their freeze driers, but I won't be getting one any time soon.

Too many homesteaders seem to want all the gadgets. Homesteading is about getting back to smart basics. I say so much of it is wasteful spending. People don't realize that just maintaining the homestead and feeding of livestock is very expensive. Starting a real productive garden and raising crops is not cheap. The point of homesteading is a more humbling way of life. Too much of society is simply excited about the latest and greatest and buy things impulsively without really taking the time to research it or learn more about it first. Everything deprecates and sadly in most cases you will lose money in the end.
@FairlyRootedАй бұрын
You bring up such a great point. It does seem like a lot of modern homesteading leans toward collecting gadgets, and it can feel like the simplicity of the lifestyle gets overshadowed. Homesteading really is about going back to the basics, learning to live more intentionally, and working with what you have. Maintaining a homestead is already expensive-feed, upkeep, seeds, and tools add up quickly. We always do it in such a way to make sure what we are doing fits our budget and is worth it. I completely agree that so much of the value in homesteading is in the skills and mindset, not the latest gadgets. Being mindful of what’s truly needed versus what’s just exciting in the moment can make such a difference. Thanks for sharing this-it’s such an important reminder! PS. My favourite "gadget" I own is an old rotary eggbeater... Simple, it works, and it will probably never break haha
@sprigssprouts6786Ай бұрын
My number one reason I don’t have a freeze dryer is the math. Doesn’t add up. The cost to purchase maintain and run a freeze dryer would make my cost of food production and preservation sooo expensive that it would be cheaper for me to just buy all organic fresh produce. I was gifted money to purchase a freeze dryer. After talking the the gift giver they agreed to me using the money to purchase a new fridge (old fridge in basement used for root crops). Another freezer (I freeze soooooomuch) a bunch of jars , extra lids, a pressure canner shelving for my pantry and a gas stove. And I still have money left over!!!!! (Already own a dehydrator). The only thing I would truly prefer a freeze dryer for is herbs. But I have been freezing herbs and the flavour has been great. Glad I didn’t waste my money.

My hubbs and his family surprised me with one for Christmas. I was on the fence and was going to wait until our house was finished being renovated. Which I figured would be another 3 to 5yrs. Hubbs is doing most the work. But all the reasons above make a lot of sense. Especially finding it hard to spend money on expensive things when you grew up impoverished. My FIL in a pepper, just not very successful so I will be making him a bunch of stuff as a "Thank You". Also if any of my extended family need to freeze dry something I told them I would do it for them. They have to buy to product and if it takes a while then they may have to spot me a few bucks for electricity as well😂.

I absolutely appreciate your opinion. Most who sell them in podcasts receive a commission if you use their link. I think The best use of one is selling what you have freeze dried. Personally preserving basil, cilantro and guacamole are excellent as it preserves flavor and nutrients Or if you grow potatoes including sweet, garlic, onions they can be easily blended to powder. Also fruits powdered for deserts and smoothies. Still, I can’t justify the price for myself. Thanks for your honesty!

I agree completely with many of your points. Needing to have a dedicated circuit for it means that once you put it in a place, you really can't move it since no other circuits in your home will be sufficient for it. . . My freeze dryer never seems to freeze food all the way through even when I add time (and I always start with fully frozen food items)- I regularly go to three or four days to fully dry simple items. I never see anyone talk about how difficult these devices are to simply use as intended. Also, my number 1 issue is that I can never freeze dry at the height of my harvest season because it is too hot and I get an error message that the temperature is too high. That is the whole reason I bought the freeze dryer was to preserve my own harvests. I think a lot more advancements need to happen to make this a plug and play type of appliance. After 4 years of using it, my assessment is that it is not worth the money and space it takes up. Maybe one day when they are smaller, more energy efficient, and less expensive to buy I will change my opinion.
@cabighorse20 күн бұрын
I have not purchased a freeze dryer for many of the reasons you mentioned. Maintenance, service and repairs are also on my list. For the cost, I’d rather purchase freeze dried foods as I need them, e.g., eggs, cheese, and other things that are difficult to preserve easily and safely at home. Kudos to you on your decision

I thought long & hard about getting a freeze dryer when it seemed like every homesteader was touting its wonderfulness. Many of your reasons for not keeping one are my reasons for not getting one. They're expensive, loud, require regular maintenance, and would take up too much real estate in my small 900 sq ft home. I can preserve food well enough not only with my canner, but also with my dehydrator (which also works great for making yogurt & raising bread dough). I'm glad I didn't buy one. Thanks for the video!
