This was very entertaining- I was also a lazy high school artist, I feel like at least at my school the bar was so low that I didn’t even know high schoolers made serious/good art! This was before art KZbin was very big and my school didn’t even have AP art, but I definitely share ur sentiments of regret. Just try lol. I tell myself it’s ok tho because our brains were literally not developed yet 🤷🏻

I was going through a lot in high school and that combined with crippling perfectionism (and I’m now working on both) so I always failed art cus I’d either sleep through class or just, not do my assignments. But I’m gonna shout out my art teacher cus she still let me take her elective class time and time again and being so understanding and encouraging

When I think back to myelf in high school it is kinda easy for me to understand why I wasn't thriving creatively and a lot of my work really did seem "lazy" it was because I was jumping between 8 classes a day and constantly having to do 5 classes worth of homework a day. No wonder why I was lazy with my art.. I barely had time to breath and here I was trying to be an artist at the same time. It got easier when I was in college and didn't have to jump between so many educational topics and could focus more on my art... Maybe it was a similar story here. As a high schooler there are so many things we need to focus on that it becomes difficult to paint something with meaning. Especially when most of the classes I took were entirely boring and not very inspiring.

This makes me feel so validated since I also used watercolor for most or actually ALL of my pieces for my AP art portfolio. I was criticized for using watercolor so frequently for my AP art portfolio pieces because it was the simplest medium to learn. But even so, I wasn't used to using other mediums, so I was stuck in a cycle of anxiously hurrying to complete 15 pieces but the end result was feeling discontent of what I made. That was about two years ago, but I've since learned that is was my perfectionism and constant validation that was holding me back. I stopped pushing myself because of the criticism I received for using watercolor, and as a result, I became lazy and my pieces weren't the best. I surprisingly got a 3 but to this day I still lay awake sometimes wishing I could go back and redo my pieces again!!

wait... watercolor, simplest medium to use?? almost everyone I know complains about watercolor being the most difficult to learn. I personally didn't have such a hard time learning it but I completely understand that it is a really difficult medium to get used to and learn techniques cause its so random and hard to control.

I love this video!! I’m in AP art right now in my junior year and I’ve also been so so lazy about it all. I switched my concentration idea multiple times this year until I finally settled on something that really interested me and was personal but by that point i had less than 3 months to create the 15 works. Now I’m cramming at the last minute but I have more hope for next year and I really want to push myself more and not be lazy about it haha. This video was really helpful and made me feel seen and a lot less stressed

I also love watching people's ap portfolio videos maybe because I was the same way. I picked an easy topic, I didn't challenge myself and all of the pieces were bad because I was lazy. I wish I could go back and redo it. Video idea? Re-doing your ap portfolio the way you wish it had been done?

I honestly agree, I wasted my high school career in art. I even took like 4 art classes senior year but let anxiety stop me from finishing pieces because classmates would see them. Idk, I would spend a week on a 1 inch square, making it super detailed but would work big and by the time I was done I rushed and put no effort in. I ended up not even submitting my AP portfolio.

LMAO my concentration was the EXACT same even worded the same.I had so many ideas i took the easy way out too. and they were mostly animal hybrids, now that ive grown i can think of so many more relevant creative ways to interpret that. that's a good challenge idea!? redoing our theme- doing 5 new pieces to better represent our theme

Once I knew a person who spoke seven languages fluently. Three out of seven on mother tongue level, and another two she was teaching, so quite high levels as well. She said when she was a teenager and already spoke three languages and was about to acquire the fourth one in school, she literally believed she has no talent in learning languages because she felt like she's struggling with learning a language in school. Creativity has several meanings. I think what you think you are lacking will come to you later. It will certainly come, you just need to be patient and don't get frustrated and distracted of your feelings. 😉

I had to look up what AP meant, never had to do that in high school. was pretty much paint or sculpt what you want for submitting portfolios I was guilty of being lazy too, always drawing the obvious since it was easy and didnt require any brain power

lol AP art was my first art class….LOL I’ve always had a love for it but took more traditional AP classes/regular classes. The thing is last semester was during COVID, so I had very little supplies, no stores open, and my mental health crumbled so I didn’t even submit a portfolio 🤧 I was crushed because I worked so hard on my first few pieces, but now I realized that AP art SUCK the creativity out of me 😅
