Social outcasts, etc. He says this line about how "forced conformity" is hurting people. Which basically is society telling everybody they have to be the same and that they have to fit in. This hurts kids who don't fit in because it makes them feel like they don't have value. I really agree with his speech, it's incredible and really captures the LGBT+ experience. The whole bandana thing was so NOT an accident. The writers basically said, if you notice any small details, they're there on purpose. These people are great at dropping hints, crumbs, and parallels. The attention to detail is incredible in this show. Also, love that Eddie opened up to Steve after knowing him for, like, two seconds. :)

the way Eddie is trying to push Steve back to Nancy is so heart-breaking because you can clearly see his logic: 1. Eddie likes Steve 2. Eddie has convinced himself that Steve does not like Eddie 3. Therefore Eddie believes he cannot make Steve happy, but he still wants him to be happy. why? refer to step 1 4. Who does Eddie believe can make Steve happy? The GIRL that Steve USED to date that just jumped into the upside down for him, NANCY. 5. Eddie now does not have to confront his feelings for Steve using the justification that "he's in a relationship (w/ Nancy)" 6. Therefore, Eddie has succeeded in doing what he believes will make Steve happy whilst also pushing Steve far enough away to protect himself. Yeah, Ouch.

Personally I think that Eddie’s just trying to help a guy-friend out because he’s realizing that Steve isn’t actually a douchebag like he always thought he was. Also it’s very obvious how lively Eddie’s personality is, like every move he makes is over-exaggerated so him leaning into Steve seems really just normal for him. Same way as he was leaning into Mike and Dustin in the cafeteria scene when he was telling them to find a sub for the DND Campaign.

Shipping is dynamic exploration, if the writers were truly dedicated to mlw pairings, there would be more interesting female characters who engage with the male characters in cool ways (and look at btvs, svtfoe, b99, spy x family, etc for examples w very popular mlw ships). M/M ships being so prevalent has significantly more to do with male dominated media, where a majority of primary characters are men who interact primarily with men (not to mention that male writers make male characters more interesting than). Than it does with fans. A majority of people's problems with gay ships is ✨Homophobia✨ or in this case ✨Biphobia✨

Good point, even great actually. BUT we do need to remember that season 1 Steve was the popular jerk and a homophobe who had this "power" or so he thought and he went out, was the king of hawkins when in season 4 he's a babysitter, hangs out with 15 year olds and a lesbian and doesn't have a partner. The glances were a little bit sus yk but it could also mean anything since they probably got along and maybe have a way they communicate or did an inside joke. But it is really possible.

There is also the fact that Gaten straight up said he likes Eddie and Steve as a couple when asked his favorite couple. Also people have pointed out things like the Hanky, the handcuffs, him literally flirting with Steve non-stop but he also named his D&D group The Hellfire Club which was actually the name of a very famous underground gay S&M club in the 1980s that those who knew about the hanky code would have known about and being that he used black, it definitely connects.

Even Gaten(Dustins actor) ships Steddie (He said it in an interview from TS Media with Priah and Sadie) and Joseph(Eddies actor) aswell Joe(Steves actor) made hints in the interviews during press tour that made me think alot plus the Duffers Brothers themselves made a joke in the new released video called : "Directing Stranger Things with the Duffers Brothers" and said "our favorite new bromance" when Eddie pushed Steve against the wall lmao. There's alot of hints even from the people behind ST so it's not that impossible!

Black bandanas in 80s metal were used as part of the look and still also used by some metal singers/performers & worn in their back left pockets. Slash & James Hetfield are two living examples who still put black bandanas/rags in their left back pockets, and both men are guitarists, like Eddie, so his design could be imitating them. It was introduced into metal by Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and fans of the genre followed the trend for a little while, whether they were aware or not what it could imply, and Rob Halford later came out as gay in the 90s. I feel its a bit more deliberate in the show in regards to Eddie's design. But the scene in the upside down where they fall bc of an earthquake and it shows steve & nancy together, then eddie & robin, so it could be a nod towards their similarities. Personally, I feel Eddie is bi or queer bc he talks against social conformity and I think it would fit in with his character as someone who cant quite be defined. Maybe he will talk about it in the way robin did. Also, Eddie's story might be derived from damien echols, a metal head accused of murder. which was also conveniently around when metal music/metal heads were being demonized for their music and clothing tastes. "Crime spike in the area? Probably those metal heads down the street!" But one thing is for certain is the Eddie as a character has captured a lot of hearts.

Ok I didn’t see any comments about this but I think it’s important to mention in this context but the scene where Eddie gives Steve his vest, he told Steve to go after Nancy but then he actually saw them having a moment of sorts and he had to break the tension ( I think this was a jealousy moment ) and it gives the classic trope of stealing ur boyfriends hoodie or wearing your partners clothes, just something to think about.

This is a ship I’ve been struggling to agree with. While I understand we’re so desperate for representation within our community when we watch our favorite shows, we start to look for things that simply aren’t there. I think Eddie and Steve are forming a super strong bromance and that’s wonderful. It’s showing boys watching this show that they can have these kinds of relationships with their fellow dude friends and have it be completely platonic. I think that’s a healthy thing to reflect. Not every close bond has to be gay. As far as Eddie’s bandana goes, he’s a metal head. My dad was a hard pressed metal head back in the 80s and that was his style. I don’t see Eddie signaling to anyone at school, a school that even Robin is afraid to come out in, that he’s a part of the queer community. If he had scenes in the public, yeah, maybe I’d consider the gay undertone. But I genuinely just see this as a healthy platonic male friendship. After seeing Eddie for all of one episode, he became my fave and I really related to that otherness, I had a late queer awakening. I think the costuming is very on point regarding hanky code details, especially when you consider how dedicated they are to trying to maintain period accuracy. Steve has evolved so much and I they made sure we saw very clearly that Steve was trying to find a spark by going on numerous dates, and Dustin even says something along the lines of 'stop wasting time dating girls and spend more time trying to find Eddie' I MEAN... Yeah. Kid just wants to see his Dads together. I think a lot of what Steve loved about Nancy was her passionate nature (which Eddie CERTAINLY has) and her intelligence (Eddie is certainly well read, creative, and very informed on some things and has demonstrated passionate interests in the limited screen time he's had). Even looks-wise, Steve clearly has a type - Eddie and Nancy look more alike than her and Mike do. I would love for them to both make it out of this alive, hell, even have Eddie confess some old school crush on Steve in the moment where he thinks he might die, but he definitely doesn't, and then after in the hospital, Steve's all "so, about that crush..." Wishful thinking, it's a helluva drug.

I know that - realistically - this won’t be a ship because we already got the quota of queer characters in a popular show with Robin and Will (We’re somehow even lucky that there’s more than one :’) ). That's not stopping me tho. That being said, I also think that the scenery and wardrobe people were up to something with Eddie. It’s not just the handkerchief: there’s also handcuffs in his room lol. I Currently there are 1057 fics for Nancy/Robin versus 1990 fics for Steve/Eddie so yes more Steddie fics overall. okay maybe some of these things have been said in the comments already so if so, apologies in the overlap but some other notes! - queerness and metal definitely go hand in hand just as much as queerness and d&d, especially with the bands that eddie is obviously a fan of (judas priest being the biggest clue, given that the lead, rob halford, is an openly gay man), and the fact that lots of 80s metal incorporates homoerotic/bdsm imagery - eddie gives steve his battle vest!! huuuge clue, honestly as equivalent as a jock giving their partner a letterman jacket. that vest bares eddie's entire personality; fantasy metal, all of the diy, you can tell that baby is well loved. eddie could have easily thrown the lether jacket at steve instead, but he didn't 3) steve's entire arc this season has been about finding himself through relationships, and even with nancy involved, all of the foreshadowing from episode 1 is during a very eddie centric scene. dustin blatantly says steve's focus should be on finding eddie instead of finding a girlfriend, and robin and his scenes pretty much all go back to the fact that robin and steve both see his current dating life with women to be misguided in nature just some other things to add to the convo!

You're right, there have been other comments about metal and queerness, but you're the first one to mention that specific band (which I did not know about and that's so cool!) Also, you are SO RIGHT about that jacket. It's so personal for Eddie, he definitely wouldn't have just given it away to anyone! And I've always felt something was queer about Steve not feeling right about dating a bunch of girls in this season. Thanks for commenting! 😁
