Max is in a coma but she’s not dead yet. Vecna/001 technically “killed” Max. Lucas mentions that her heart stopped for one minute and that’s how the portal opened and why the clock chimed four times. But Eleven somehow saves her. At the hospital Eleven goes into Max’s mind but can’t find her. It’s just empty. In the massacre scene 001 told eleven that the kids are not dead but still in his head. Papa also mentions how 001 consumes the people he kills. My theory is that Max’s consciousness/soul is in his head and if he’s defeated all the captured souls escapes. Since Max’s body is still intact her soul has a place to come back too, while the others can’t be saved because their bodies are completely destroyed.

Meh, people use that "they're not really dead as long as they're in our thoughts" line all the time. I don't imagine this is going to be something different, I think he meant that he "ate" them, as in absorbed their essences and such, but they're definitely gone for all intents and purposes. It's like saying you ate something and it became a part of you, so it's not really "gone", but it's definitely not its own thing anymore.

@Tyler Troyano I wish though Vecna would have purely sadistic and evil and not be complex. Given what he does is pretty evil but he thinks he's rational and justified. I don't like that they tried to make the audience sympathize and empathize with him a little bit because of all he did.

It's great how as the kids get older, their monsters get more menacing and complex. Lucas holding Max and calling for his sister to help him brought me to tears. In fact, I was a mess this entire episode. Gay is normal, but I don't think Will is ever going to be a normal person again. At the end, when he was talking about Vecna NOT being dead, he looked so haunted. Next season will be epic!

I am a true 80s kid. I’m almost 45 years old. And I feel that this TV series is the best I’ve ever seen. I have fallen in love with the characters and the story lines. I love the development of each of them over these 4 seasons. The actors and actresses that portrayed these characters are absolutely and amazingly talented. The homage paid over during this series is with thee utmost respect, too. Thank you Duffer brothers for giving some of us a trip down memory lane. I have laughed. I have cried. RIP Barb, Bob, Billy and Eddie. I am SO excited for Season 5 . I truly hope it is not the last season but if it is, please give us 10+ episodes lol!

There’s something to be noted. El does not need victims to open gates, but Vecna does. She can open and close gates without human sacrifices. I think El is more powerful than Vecna and/or has more ability to tap into the source of power than Vecna. Edna needed four victims, and his fourth victim sacrifice was not completed… what does tha mean…. Are the portals not stable?

Technically, El needed victims as well - she had to banish Henry to the Upside Down in order to open the portal. Same with the Demigorgon. Honestly, these are metaphors for banishing abuse from your life. It's locked away in a dark place inside of the mind. We can heal and overcome the past, but it can also haunt us at any time.

Without doubt. I don't think we've even seen El at her full potential yet. I think we got a glimpse in Season 2 when she closes the gate but she's going to be 🔥 in season 5. There's something else too. During the scene where she breaks free from vencas vines it's easy to forget that what we saw was a mind fight not a physical one. She was inside vecnas mind when she did that so that means she overpowered his control to release her without him even knowing it. I also wonder how a physical 1v1 will play out. El was fighting long distance on Vecnas turf and jumping through hoops to do it. Face to face might play out differently.

The whole ‘revival’ thing is actually quite simple, it’s just the human body, really. Obviously for somebody to be alive, the blood needs to circulate the body, which can only be done by the heart, though when somebody dies, the heart stops this, so they die. What Eleven did was really simple. She practically got Max’s heart with her powers, and made it beat, which then meant the blood could go around the body. She pretty much just did CPR a with her powers.

I do have one thing to say, while it does makes sense for 11 to just pump the heart, two things would need to happen. Since max stopped breathing when she was “dead” any oxygenated blood she had left was all she had. Secondly, 11 had to pump enough blood to max’s brain that was still oxygenated and get the cycle going. I’m not sure how long that takes or what amount but just good for thought. Another thing, cpr works because it applies just enough pressure to start the heart, and not so much that it damages the person. So 11 just squeezing max’s heart just by feeling probably wouldn’t work out. And 11 just had the fight of her life, so I feel like reviving someone isn’t really possible at that moment. Also we’ve never seen 11’s powers work from this range let alone through seeing max in her mind. It just seems weird that all 11 has to do is say no and she’ll be able to do all sorts of new things. Also let’s be honest, did she REALLY know max? She had one day where they had a sleepover and now they’re best friends? With all the trust issues 11’s had it doesn’t really seem all that like her to be so attached so quickly. It just feels like she had too many aces up her sleeve for it to make sense. Sometimes it’s not as simple as “she started her heart back up.” Just my opinion, I know I’m over complicating things and I’m sure they will have a reason at some point, but with what we were given it’s pretty hard to believe everything worked out like that

I have a strong feeling there will definitely be time jumps (as stated by director and yourself. ) but both past , present/future. These jumps will play a big role with being ahead of 001. I think 011 will figure that out, meeting Max during different time period unlocking probably a power within Max who will be the key to all of this.

Yeesss I'm so happy someone thinks Max will have powers in S5. I think Will will too. I'm thinking Will could get a power upgrade to control monsters from the Upside Down like how he was possessed and Max will have the ability to traverse through memories. I don't think Max realizes she's doing this just yet and is just lost in memories atm. I would love to see more superpowered people on their team for the final showdown and I'm hoping 008 comes to help too.

This finale really had an Empire Strikes Back vibe, especially with ending where the villains win and the heroes are at their weakest spot. Luke undergoing training with Yoda similar to the whole Project Nina thing (even the scene where Eleven lifts that chamber totally parallels Luke trying to lift the X-wing). Luke leaving the training to face Vader despite Yoda warning that he's not ready yet, just like how Eleven ran off to face Vecna despite Brenner claiming that she's not ready yet, only for Luke/Eleven to face defeat under Vader/Vecna. It ends with Han Solo being captured by the Empire and frozen in Carbonite, kinda like how ST ends with Max in a coma. Even their story structures are kinda similar, with the heroes being separated for the majority of the story (Luke/Eleven undergoing training while Han & Leia/the Hawkins gang are fighting the Empire/Vecna)

Because everyone that doesn't understand the "upside down" in Hawkins only assumes it's an earthquake. They state this in the last episode. However, I too didn't like the fact the duffer bros made a time jump of '2 days later'. Because we all seen Eddie cut the rope to the portal, so how did Dustin, Steve, Nancy, Robin get back to 'real life'? I feel like this scene was rushed.

Until the scene when the portal opens I thought this finale will be epic. Then, this 2 days jump happened. I thought, Ok, I'm sure the entire US army is at hawkings by now and they trying to lock down the place and figure out what to do, everybody is in panic and running for their lives. Instead, everybody was chill and calm, slowly and peacfully preparing to leave the city, reporters are reporting meters away from the portal and besides 1-2 solder there are no sign of any significant military deployment. WHAT the actuall f**ck??? This made 0 sense to me, its completely ridiculous... This is such an incredible plothole that almost destroys the entire tension which was built up until the point when the portal opened. I just don't understand how could they think this was a good artistic choice...

Really enjoyed this season. However, it's cowardly to introduce Eddie only to predictably kill him in the finale. I think it's past due for the Duffers to kill main characters. Like, why not have Dustin die in Eddie's arms? That would be daring storytelling. Or, maybe kill Steve to give Nancy some edge, or have Lucas accidentally kill Jason during the struggle for the gun. This is a horror story after all and the cast is huge.

And personally I agree with you I think the entities that the protagonists go up against in this show should be just that. But I also like what they did. Because it’s not that you have to sympathize with him, just understand to a degree what he’s getting at and why. And his motives aren’t bad. He truly believes in what he’s doing and makes it hard to argue with those beliefs, because in a way what he’s doing is beyond what humans would ever consider rational. To him he’s a god and who is anyone to argue with what he has accomplished. All they can do is fight and in the end I don’t think anyone will be left feeling sad when he goes, maybe just like “hell yea finally”. And that’s probably what they’re going for

Yeah, that is my prediction as well. Since Venca gains power by shackling his victims minds within himself, the key to weakening him will be releasing all those that he has killed. Max may very well be the key to doing this.

So these scene with Will and Jonathon in the Pizza place. That scene awoken something deep in me because I was bawling like a baby as Jonathon was telling him how much he'll always love and accept and be there for him. It was truly and underrated moment.

I think the reason the upside down is stuck in time from when Will was taken is that when Eleven opened the gate a second time in season one, she fused the two words together somehow. So when she connected with it through the void by touchingthe Demogorgan, it changed from it's original and Henry/Vecna/One molded dimension into an echo of Hawkins frozen at the moment of fusion.

Season 1 was new 2 was same ol' same ol' but it had great character development and cute kids coming out age romance that's nostalgic even for adults. Season 3 was boring with the Russians. But season 4 is great thanks to new villain Henry and the backstory of El and what happened at Hawkins lab. Humans always make the most compelling villains than mindless monsters because human villains always make interesting character studies.

A couple things for me, Eddie's character had so much more story to give, that it sucks that they killed him off. Second, I found it odd that Jason had most of the town on his side to hunt the characters down but when they did find them, it was only him and his homeboy to show up.

I agree, Eddie's death felt off to me. They were trying to fulfil this story arc about not running in the face of danger but realistically, he didn't slow down the bats for long. Even the way the bats circled around him seemed stupid, they could have killed him instantly with the amount of them there was and then went straight back to the house with Vecna

At first vecna had to abdorb his victims to actually kill for the gate. Eddie was killed by Bats, not absorbed, which lets me really hope that he comes back like that betraying Vampire fighter against Vecna( the only not having no brain option in dungeons and dragons to defeat Vecna) with an e-Guitar which have some awesome super wave power...that would be great...Eddie why did you die??

Season 5 opens up with Dustin remembering the first day he met Eddie when everything was back to normal. Eddie bestows some metal wisdom to his new hellfire member then we cut to the big time jump future. That would be a great opening for the fans and for the story. It’ll also give Quin the stage to show his acting chops of playing a Eddie not fully evolved or grown into… but still have him be charming and bestow wisdom

Concerning the number 4, the fourth dimension in conventional physics is time, which was used and manipulated throughout this season. Continuing with the (assumed) pattern, the fifth dimension- the concept of a tesseract- could be a major plot element in Season 5. Tesseracts describe how space could be warped, and how one could (in theory) travel great distances while making it seem like only a few feet(or meters, inches… however you want to measure it).

I'm saying yes, but maybe not the best job showing how. The arena fight and torching of the demogorgons was juxtaposed with Nancy and Robin shooting and burning Vecna. There was a moment after a Demogorgon was hurt when Vecna looked like he was feeling pain, but it's hard to tell because he was on fire and taking buckshot, too. I guess the argument would be a less distracted Vecna may have been able to overpower his direct assailants. Sort of a cost for having the hive mind.

If they can use music to draw out the innocent 001 befoere he turned evil, then they reach the 20 to win!

What was the mind flare before vecna took over it? It doesn't seem to have a mind of its own. What is it and what can it do apart from being puppeteerd by vecna? I think Vecna's mind fills in the landscape when he stalks someone in the normal world, like a game map adding in buildings and roads when you enter that section. Remember, although Will was taken from his house... he was at the Wheeler house playing D&D and as he left that house, the porch lights started glitching.... Vecna projected himself _there_ , he is the shadowy figure that appeared on the road, just like he was the shadowy figure in johnathan's photo of Barb at the Harrington house. The upside down copy of Eddies' trailer is only a few days old... it's from when Chrissy was killed, not the night Will was taken.

The POWER of these stories. steven king type stories. with a group of kids. the mind of a kid, just having fun in a basement and playing games. in season 3 the killer end line from the letter: "i don't want things to change" and we see will cry and them driving away. 3 theories of mine: 1. The gang, after a couple years,figure out beating vecna and the mind flayer is practically impossible and they come up with an idea of going back in time and reversing the first showdown with Henry(vecna). Everyone comes back to present day like nothing happened. But the twist is,with that, they have no memory of 11. And 11 has no memory of them. Second theory, same thing,2 years ahead, they're trying different things, and realize will can tell where he is. The group figures out to defeat the mind flayer,they have to defeat vecna in human form. They plan an all out brawl and during that max wakes up, which closes a gate. The gang realizes this and they head back to the upside down,revive the others and close the gates. After that they kill vecna in human form. Still having the mind flayer to deal with. 11 tells them she can control it and send it back but she will have to go with it and close the gates for good. She does,and stays in the upside down to watch over the darkness. 3. Same as last two,2 years later, vecna and mind flayer reek havok on Hawkins. The gang comes up with a plan to get the mind flayer back to the upside down. But first the mind flayer kills vecna and starts to run wild. 11 goes beast mode. And send the mind flayer back and seals up Hawkins. When that happens, 11 gets too weak and dies,while saving Hawkins.

That was very selfless of Will putting Mike and El before himself. I still can’t help feel sad for him and he needs someone to be there for him more than ever. I really want to know how they will bring 8 back into this story because she could possibly play a major roles especially in the dreams since she can create illusions. Another thing that I am curious about as well is how did she escape Hawkins lab when Henry destroyed it.

In the very first episode of season 1 Joyce tells Hopper in his office that people think Will is gay. Hopper says “is he?” And Joyce says “he’s sensitive.” So they’ve hinted at it from the beginning. Love the writing and character development in this show, it’s amazing.

the show’s longtime production designer Chris Trujillo said in an Interview: "The moment that the Upside Down was quote-unquote “created” inadvertently by Eleven, the set dressing and the world of the Upside Down is frozen in that moment. So like when we’re in Nancy’s room, we’ll discover in the Upside Down that Nancy’s room is as it was season 1 when we first were introduced to it." So the Hawkins version of the Upsidedown was accidentally created by Eleven when she opened the maingate. That makes more sense than Vecna doing it because he hates the artificial human world. He wouldn't want to recreate it. He wants to take it over and mold it into what he wants.

I agree this was the best season and the last two episodes were amazing! And yes The Talisman is about another realm but it's more like a fantasy world than the upside down. Also i had no idea the Duffers are making it into a series that's awesome!

King is overexposed. I wish Barker's works would get some more attention. They didn't even make volume two of _The Great and Secret Show_ graphic novel. 😕

@@I.____.....__...__ oh I absolutely one hundred percent agree with you about Barker, his books are excellent. I didn't even know there was a graphic novel of TGASS but I liked the book, actually it was the first one of his books I ever read bit that sucks it only got one volume. Unfortunately only Hellraiser was adapted and the only other movie of his I recall is Lord of Illusions.

I have a theory that Terry Ives is vecnas sister for many reasons, but the biggest reason is that eleven is as powerful if not more powerfull than vecna. It would also make sense because Terry seems really hurt and it feels like its trauma that has caused such a big pain. Also its like she is stuck looking for her daughter in her mind, but she has forgotten how to go out, but ofcourse we know that she already has a sister. I feel like the sister isnt her sister because it was such a weird interaction as she didn't hesistate to call and she always felt off to me. I think she was sent to look after Terry so that no memories come back.

So if Hawkins was frozen the moment in time that the gate to the Upside Down was opened, how was Will able to interact with the Christmas lights and letters Joyce painted on the wall in season 1?

The only single thing I had a problem with in the final episode was that everyone calls it an earthquake even though I have a hard time believing that not a single person saw the giant rift in the ground or took a picture of it. I mean with all the people there, it just doesn't make sense. Also, wouldn't there still be giant Valleys in the ground from where the rift originally was? Besides that one thing, I loved everything else about the season. Great job!

I think the whole no pictures thing has to do with people getting evaporated if they were too close to the rift + it’s the 1980s so most people just didn’t carry cameras around like we can today

Guys remember in the end of Season 1 when the kids play DnD, and arguing that the campain was nonsense ? They mentioned a knight, a princess, and a cave with mysterious flowers. Well, what if Hopper is the knight, Joyce the princess, the cave is the library and the flowers are vecna's nerves spreaded accross the upside down version of Hawkins ? That would explain why the center of the giant Gate is located at the library. Something in Season 1 must have happened when will was stick in that place and connected to the plants. Since Will Can still feel the stranger things happening about the upside down, he is probably connected somehow. This season brought many psychologic elements, so I believe that vecna set 1983 to upside down's Hawkins clock based on Will's trauma about being kidnapped and all the stuff he endured during season 1. That would give us another piggyback arc in Season 5, about the Gang heading to the library to destroy whatever is causing this mess since the beggining.

One question : the Demogorgon is shown in the first season with the ability to create portals. My understanding was that Eleven, by touching its mind, just made it realize that there was another dimension, and that was why he went into ou world ... but in later seasons, this ability of the Demogorgon just ... vanished

when i was watching will talk to mike about him being the heart, me my dad and my sister were all joking about how obvious his crush was and my mum got all confused. turns out that despite the fact that the rest of us had picked up on it in the past seasons, my mum hadn't- her 'oh- he likes MIKE??' was the funniest thing ive ever heard, i wish i could write her inflection as she said it, we had to pause the show for a sec. apparently she'd picked up on the love triangle, but thought it was the classic both boys liking the girl type of love triangle lol

Honestly. . You're mom may not be that off. That could be the plot twist that he likes eleven but knows Mike is in love with her and doesn't want to cause problems. It could be possible because will be gay is just too obvious

I do think I have a theory about why max was able to travel into vecna's mind. though vecna's kills may seem diverse, I did notice a type of trend all his kills shared. he seems to prefer to trap his victims in either an enclosed environment or an environment that would be hard for the victim to escape from vecna. take the lake, the trailer, and the creel house. and if you count his attempted murders we can also add Chrissy's house and the school. (and before you ask about Fred, he was a bit more emotional manipulable. so vecna didn't really worry about him even though he was in an open environment because vecna's tricks just worked better for someone like Fred.) what I'm trying to say is that I believe within every world created when vecna tries to kill someone, there is a type of hole that leads into his mind. this is why vecna chooses enclosed spaces or environments that would be difficult for the victim to run easily because A, it's a more effective and easy way to kill people and B, it insures that they don't stray too far and end up in his mind. this is part of the reason why, whenever he barricades doors in enclosed places, he's insuring they don't get away and wander off. this could also explain why vecna was surprised Max got so far as up to that point he really didn't have to deal with a victim wandering off to his mind. this could also mean that vecna underestimated max and thought she'd be as manipulable as Fred. both do share similar trauma and remember that vecna (presumably) only sees the bad in people (though it could be up for debate if he can know what they're capable of. this is all a theory and I'll admit, I might be underplaying vecna's intellect a tad bit here. but what do you think?

@@KungFuKeni I was mostly referring how he died in the forest/on the road. If max was killed in the same area it could've ended similarly to the time vecna tried killing max in the grave yard. But Fred being killed in a grave does further my point on how vecna prefers to kill.

Though I wasn’t really a fan of season 2’s arc with Kali/Eight, it could be worth noting that Eight’s storyline is unresolved and that she may well be coming back in the season 5 finale. Maybe Eleven and Eight have to fight together in order to defeat Henry/001/Vecna. It also seems that Will is tied into the mind flayer in ways that have yet to be revealed.
