AUTO ISO is not a solution in this case. I've had many comments saying to use AUTO ISO. The problem with this is that you're giving up control over your exposure. This might work when any exposure will do, I use it when doing traveling photography. In this case, when you point your camera toward a window it will turn the entire picture extremely dark. Keeping it in full manual allows you to stay in control.
@ladislavphotography5 жыл бұрын
I use Auto ISO + exposure compensation button if needed +/- (Nikon D750). It´s very convenient and fast in every situation.
@4KLive5 жыл бұрын
Actually using auto with any of the priority mode does not let you use control, you just need to keep an eye on what setting it has chosen for you and you make adjustment ( ev +/- and focus point) accordingly to keep in in control.
@ladislavphotography5 жыл бұрын
4K Live You are right, that at the particular moment i rely on camera settings, but in 99% cases the exposure (with Auto ISO) is correct or ok. It also requires having short preview of the picture on and briefly check that from time to time. But as mentioned in the video, the point of all this is to be focused on composition, model etc. (not changing setting) so for that purpose Auto ISO works pretty well.
@MegaWeitzel5 жыл бұрын
Do you shoot and deliver JPEG? If not why does it matter? Adjusting exposure later in RAW is just as good as doing it in camera? Also which camera are you using and why is your metering not linked to the AF point (and thereby the subject) [Also I don't know if you are using a mirrorless camera but here you would see the camera choosen exposure right in the EVF] PS: I agree that noise isn't that important. I just don't understand your workflow
@JohnArmstrongPhotography5 жыл бұрын
Auto ISO in modern cameras allows for full control, not loss of control. Auto ISO allows one to set the parameters, for example, camera don’t go above ISO 3200, don’t drop below 1/250th and all you worry about is aperture control, using your exposure compensation dial to get the exposure you want. There is no faster way to shoot natural light, especially with mirrorless and live preview. Cameras like Fujifilm have 3 auto iso settings, so one can be for example, ISO 3200 and 1/60th, second, ISO 3200 and 1/125th and third ISO 6400 and 1/500th. Program any button on the body to access AUTO ISO and all it takes is a tap of the button to shift between. Super fast.

Exactly. I’m using an rebel t6 and I prefer to shoot at 400, I feel like it actually helps me get my exposure the way I see it. I completely agree as well with the flexibility for the changing weather and scene. I don’t understand why photographers are so stigmatizing.

ISO up to 800 or even a bit higher is nearly standard for me in many situations when I`m using my Nikon D700 with its class-leading high ISO performance at the time when it was launched, usable up to ISO 12800, so for me it`s realy no problem using Auto-ISO in many situations, I can also set a maximum value in the menu which is ISO 3200 as my standard max, sometimes I use clearly visible noise for creative reasons

Seriously, that's bizarre?? Cameras these days can handle so much higher ISOs beautifully. The rule of thumb is NOT shoot at the lowest ISO available, it's shoot at the lowest ISO you can, and since this guy shoots in natural light, sometimes the lowest ISO is going to be 400, sometimes 800, shit, for me in the dark situations I shoot in, it's 3600-6400! (My current camera can't handle much more past that)

Man... The noise on ISO 400 is so low on modern cameras that you can neglect it... Even ISO 1600 is usable as hell... Don't know what is the fuss about. If you are shooting architecture, landscapes, still life, real estate - go ahead shoot at iso 100 there is no problem becouse you can have as long exposure as you wish, but in most case you won't even find the difference between iso 100 and 400. But shoot at what makes you happy and makes your images pleasing to you! Great video Michael. I'm not shooting boudoir but many of the things you share help me. Keep it up and thank you!

Like your videos, I've learned a lot from them. I think someone did a video talking about ISO and basically said that unless you're pushing it to like 8000, yes you will get noise but you still have to know what to look for and that you can sharpen up the photo afterwards. Very similar to what you said in your video.

There's many people on the internet who care too much about the settings and the gear that's used. Don't get me wrong, gear and setting do matter. However you shouldn't forget what's most important: being creative, looking for a unique perspective, capturing a moment or emotion. As long as the photo looks good and/or transfers the desired emotion, who cares about the settings or camera it's been taken on?
@fabienb5 жыл бұрын
I’m with you on this one. Unless I shoot landscape/cityscape on a tripod, I often simply raise the ISO. Modern cameras are more than capable to produce great shots at higher ISO nowadays and frankly, it’s not your camera technical aspect that matters, it’s your subject and the photo you want to shoot.

It’s so ironic I just watched this. At my last wedding I shot I started realizing how annoying it was to go back and forth between ISO’s and adjust shutter speed. So I raised ISO a bit. I get what your are doing so much now. I don’t want to shoot in aperture priority and use exposure compensation because depending on lighting and scene, it changes. Auto ISO on my Canon isn’t reliable enough. The same thing.. lighting and scene affects its reliability. It seems to be under or over compensating most of the time. Like you said, if you raise ISO a bit to the right spot, then you only have to move shutter speed to adjust for exposure. It makes it simpler for those that want full manual for control, but also don’t want to be switching multiple things at once.

Another thing that mike didn't add but I feel is something to touch on. A few of the vids where Mike's talking about posing, he has the model moving arms or having them walk to create a more organic pose. If your shutter was at 1/50 at iso 100, you're gonna get more motion blur. Better to bump the iso up so you can freeze that motion properly, instead of having blurry images.

All modern FF cameras, look perfectly clean at ISO 400- even much higher if you do not underexpose. My 5DIV is setup so that my wheel is ISO. I set my shutter where I want to freeze motion. I set my Fstop where I want to give me the DOF I want, and just worry about ISO with the wheel. Its even better on the EOS R with the lens dial set for ISO. It also means my ISO will be at the lowest level for noise.

This is not 1979, just before Kodak released Kodacolor ASA1000 print film. (I know. I shot with it.) I shoot up to ISO 25,600 with my Canon 5DMkIII/IV. While you might not care to do boudoir at that high an ISO value, digital camera technology has advanced far beyond the need to shoot at ISO 100, at least for a few of us. But of course ISO 25,600 is Just Plain Wrong. That's why earlier today, before seeing this video, I switched my max ISO value on the MkIV to 51,200. Nice video! I usually never worry about high ISO settings because most modern cameras handle them with ease. My technique is to pick the lowest ISO possible but the highest one necessary so I still try to shoot at ISO 100 if I can, but nothing will stop me from shooting at ISO 20000 if the need presents itself. For me, it's all about the available light and the results I'm going for. I shoot on two low-light APS-C cameras (Nikon D7500 and Nikon D7200) and I don't even start worrying about noise in my images until about ISO 12800! This just shows how good cameras are nowadays.

Honest question: If you want to keep a minimum shutter speed (understandable) and a locked aperture (so you control depth-of-field), why don't you just shoot in A mode with a minimum shutter speed and Auto ISO (+ some exposure adjustment to suit your style). You would never have to change settings at all so you still would be able to focus on "the important things", and the brighter pictures would end up being at ISO 100 or base ISO if your camera goes lower. As much as ISO might not be an important factor for you, if low ISO comes for free, surely you would appreciate the improvement in dynamic range.
@MichaelSasser5 жыл бұрын
Because aperture priority actually lets the camera choose the brightness of the photo. I want to control the actual exposure, but this way lets me do that, without dealing with too many variables.

totally agree with you on this! I don't necesarry have to stick to 100 eventhough i know it's ideal, but going up to 1600 or a lil bit over (since we have a better camera technology now for better noise handling over 1600) it is more than safe to do so. I remember doing a glamour/boudoir shoot with other group of photographers and I was on one corner shooting the model on a pretty dimlit area and with no flash setup, a photographer asked me what ISO i was shooting? And I said 2000. And he says that would be a lot of noise! I'm like "trust me, this camera can handle that much noise". Then I showed him the preview and he was more than surprised when I zoomed into the photo and he also didn't realize that it was decently bright in the room.

A couple of decades ago, I learned an important lesson about photography and non photographers. I was the best man at a wedding and when I was looking at the stack of 400 or so photo prints the bride was showing, I pointed out the streak in every photo that the developer had created. She had not even noticed them nor had the 30 odd people who had looked at them before I had. Most photographers who fixate on ISO and sharpness are worried about what other photographers have to say. It is the end use that counts.

In a wedding, I start at 3200 lol. I work it down to 1250 (rarely go below that because of how it affects the ss) or up to 12800 depending on the requirement later. But whenever I pick up my camera out of the bag for a wedding shoot, I set it to 3200 and start there. N some of my most loved photos are that I shot at 8000+ and later added even more film grain in Lightroom. You just need to feel it, not watch it!

2000 iso on a full frame body without cropping is extremely likely to be good enough, it's only when you really go up to 6400 and crop your images that noise really becomes noticable

On a lot of my street photography I I shoot at a higher ISO, or even auto ISO so I don't have to always change my shutter and apreture.. I always say in Street photography a photo taken at high(er) iso is always better than no photo.

I actually like a bit of noise/grain! Super sharp, clean and glossy images don't look authentic imo. It starts to look like some sort of CGI lol.

I was photographing a friend with my cat at the weekend, I wanted speed (cats don’t pose) and small aperture (cats don’t pose) so put the iso up till I could get that. Better a bit of noise than a blurry out of focus photo

Its completely a Camera thing if you got a camera like the a7 first generation, you loose a lot of colours at high ISO. I agree its not about noise. In my opinion its about the colours you loose. Sometimes Black and white works but bw doesnt look good on every picture.

I think it was the photographer David Hamilton?? That used to shoot high ASA film in one of the countries that allows under 18 boudoir stuff. His photos were soft focus, High grain but were wonderful pieces of art. David Hamilton was another photographer that didn't care about grain.

I shoot a lot of medium format 6x7, since you don't really get very fast lenses for that format, you usually use ISO 400 for usable shutter speeds

Unless you are shooting an early CCD camera, you shouldn’t notice any noise at ISO 400. I would also think the difference in dynamic range between ISO 100 and ISO 400, if there is any at all, would be minimal and barely noticeable particularly if the image is properly exposed.

Recently shot an event for a really big venue in London... Most of the time I was at iso 3200 (one was at 8000), just got an email to say they think the photos are the best they have ever received from a photographer. With a modern full frame digital camera and lightroom, it really isn't an issue at all!
