Why I Sold My Canon C70 But You Probably Shouldn't

I sold my C70. I liked it very much, but it just wasn't getting the use it deserved with the type of work I have been doing lately. That's the rub.
Watch the video if you want to listen to me elaborate. It is still ultimately a great, versatile "can do almost anything" camera. I just love Komodo and see myself using it predominately for the near future with the R5 picking up the slack.
Guys I know the audio sync is off when it cuts to the second angle (The Canon R5 angle). I truly do not know what the heck happened. It was fine on the edit page in Resolve but something must have happened during the export. I am sorry about that. I re-exported and believe it's fixed, but I'd hate to lose the views and comments I've gathered so far by re-uploading. So just pretend it's a podcast and I'll do better about triple-checking to make sure everything is perfect before uploading.

Beautiful said. Agree with everything you said! The Komodo and the R5 are the Falcon & WS duo of the camera world.

Canon must have heard you and have a few firmware updates since your video. The facial focus lock 🔒 is dead on now. Canon has been dropping firmware updates to the C70 left & right. For what I do, all amateur work, the C70 would be perfect for me. Your logic is solid with how you explained your needs. I’m novice & ancient using the C100 MKII & 90D. 😂

I liked your video, subscribed! Can you please say me if the R5 in 8k raw match the dynamic range with the c70, or what is the difference between them? I don’t find a real comparison between them two about dynamic range. The most people use the 10bit clog 1 or 3 for dynamic range test on the R5 but not 8k raw what is better in dynamic range. I own the R5 but I want a camera with better dynamic range. Also about a7siii vs R5 8k raw dynamic range? Only on dynamic range I’m interested. Thank you very much!

The C70 with Clog 2 in 10bit still has more dynamic range than the RAW from the canon 5r, but a noticeable margin. The A7siii is also better in that regard than the R5. The R5 is just a better all in one package than both options.

Really insightful video and helpful, thanks for this. I’m considering this exact combo as I prefer the image quality by far, but would have to take on some debt to make it happen - what are your thoughts on this? I’d be switching from Sony and It’s an expensive combo (especially with lenses considered). Were you able to pay for it all outright or did you finance and consider it an investment? This isn’t something I hear many creators talk about but I think a lot of us contemplate this.

I think you bring up some good points about the realities of the finance aspect of this KZbin gear culture. I’ll elaborate on them in a further video. But to answer your question , I did switch from Sony to canon / red and was able to do it without much costs to myself because cameras like the fx6 and a7siii were still in hot demand at the time. If it would have been during normal times with normal stocks of supply it would have definitely been done at a loss. And of course rigging out the red (as with any red) does add a bit of cost, but thankfully the non proprietary nature of the Komodo makes this a bit softer on the finances than with previous red cameras and I already had a lot of stuff in my kit that I could use. I would try to avoid going into debt to finance gear if possible, but down responsibility it could be a savvy business investment as long as you treat as such and not a green light to buy gear just cuz you want it. Definitely don’t put it on a credit card as the interest rates add up. And have a solid game plan for how you’re going to use the kit to pay back the investment and make money. Sometimes our best laid plans don’t work out and we take a loss on gear. But jsut stay mindful to keep those moments to a minimum.

The image quality on this video is great. The commentary is cool. Needs more komodo, R5 b-roll to really hit your point home.

Their DSMC2 bodies to me are overpriced for the value they bring. Even more so when you consider the proprietary nature of their accessories which greatly inflate the costs and when you consider the alternatives from other manufacturers. I also take very negative issues with RED regarding that ridiculous parent they have on internal compresses RAW codecs of any kind preventing anyone else from competing with them. Could you imagine if Ford had an exclusive patent on the internal combustion engine? If you’re competitive advantage relies on you artificially preventing your competition from stepping up their game, then your patent shouldn’t stand up. That said the Komodos lack of proprietary support makes it a much more appealing option financially without compromising the fantastic image quality their more expensive cameras offer. There are still things about it I don’t like, like the lack of frame rate options, but at this price, the image quality and quality of the files are top notch. Although the margin is slim because all manufacturers these days make cameras capable of incredible images. I am really just splitting hairs. I just really like their RAW workflow and their color science. And the folks who work in their customer support dept are fantastic and very helpful. They truly stand by their product and that goes a long way towards my decisions to invest into an eco system. So I guess suffice it to say my feelings about RED are complicated lol.

@@ChristianSantiagophoto Gotcha, yes, the Komodo's price point let many people forgive a lot, and the image looks really good. Image from C70 loos also brilliant, just this bad autofocus is what prevents me from putting my hands on it.

Excellent, fantastic image quality but unable to reach its true potential because of lack of proper RAW support. They need Zraw to be natively supported in resolve of perhaps license Blackmagic raw. Still a fantastic eco system with a great community. I miss it and wish It would have made financial sense to stay in their eco system.

@@ChristianSantiagophoto thanks for your response. I’m older than you, but behind you career wise. I’m trying to make a buying decision. I want a great camera...but also a great ecosystem to grow in to. I’ve used the a7siii, c70, R5 and borrowing an E2-F6. The a7siii is incredible...but the upgrade path thing with Sony is weird. To get a better image (arguably) I’d have to go FX9. Alas...cameras lol.

more and more I watch komodo reviews, I can't resist!! I'm looking into same setup like your A cam for Komodo and specialty B cam for R5(which I currently use it as A Cam) How is is like to color correct and grade them in the post? Is it cumbersome to go back and forth? Do you feel the need of both A&B cam same brand, model? I wonder how your set up works in interview for match cuts. Thanks for sharing your insights :)

@ChristianSantiagophoto
@ChristianSantiagophoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimandLauren I truly believe that lighting, set design art direction, and lens choice go a lot further towards getting a "filmic " look than a camera sensor. I wouldn't worry about the image quality of your camera. They're all great now. But yes, I do believe the RED footage upon close examination has a more organic, smooth look to it. It's hard to describe exactly, but something about the motion and the overall look of the image feels more organic to me. And RED's color science is far ahead of Sony's IMO. And then R3D as a codec just blows anything from sony right out of the water. You pay for it in storage space, but you can really push those files.

That's the thing with youtubers, you always NEED the latest gear... Do you really need a R5, akomodo and a c70 ? Does your production improve? Nope... Brands loves guys like you...
@ChristianSantiagophoto
@ChristianSantiagophoto 3 жыл бұрын
No. I don’t need a c70. That’s why I sold the c70. It’s in the title of the video. I sold it because my needs changed. I do photography too. It’s half of my income. So yes I do need a stills camera. I chose the r5 because it’s also a capable video camera and shares an RF mount with the Komodo so I can consolidate my lenses. It’s really not that uncommon for video and photo professionals to have more than one body because you might need a backup incase something happens or sometimes you need to shoot multiple cameras angles at once or you just want a gimbal or slider ready to go at a moments notice. And its not just about image quality ,as I explained in the video. They’re different tools for different types of work ( I am sensing a pattern of poor comprehension skills). These are business assets. I am trying to help people make informed purchases. If you’re a professional, I wouldn’t have to explain any of this to you. And you wouldn’t be craving the desperate attention you were so callously denied as child by making stupid ass comments on a KZbin channel.
