Love your feedback on the C200 and about gear in general. It gets to a certain point that modern cameras are all really good, and there's other things like lighting and set design that play into how good the video looks.

Totally agree! If you need a certain feature for a specific client request then you should consider having a camera that can do that specific thing. In my case I did need a cinema camera with at least a 4k 10 bit image so I upgraded to a C500 II. But I got away with shooting on the C200 for years until I needed to move to a new camera. And the image, while better in the C500 II, wasn’t really the primary driver for my upgrade.

Like you I also have both and C200 Raw files are pretty large. I purchase the R5C cause I'm a hybrid shooter and wanted to stay with canon, which worked out fine

Yeah I really wish the C200 Raw files were a bit more compressed. They still look great, they just take up quite a bit of storage. I'd have to double check, but I think the 5.9k Raw out of the R5c is on par, data-wise, with similar record times out of the C200.

I transcode all my footage to apple ProRes HQ From my c200 raw footage and it’s still massive files but it’s a breeze to edit but question is there much of a difference in quality if I transcode my raw footage to ProRes LT instead of HQ ? Or is that all just for color grading ? Cause I grade it in resolve then transcode it

Nice test, but just for kicks & giggles it woulda been cooler for you to do the same RAW CRM stress tests on the R5C's 8k and 2.9k resolutions. I'm sure some people are curious how full frame and super16 hold up in recovering either highlights or shadows. Same thing with 8k HEVC format - would love to see that go thru the stress test.

Couldn't agree more. I may go back at some point and retest things, but most likely it will be vs. the Red Komodo. I have been pairing up my R5C with my Komodo for A/B camera angles and I'm more interested in how those compare from a technical standpoint.

The R5C wins out for the hybrid user, but it definitely lacks some key elements the dedicated video/cinema professional needs. A lot of people I know work with video and they'd take quite a lot of convincing to give up on built-in ND filters, XLR inputs and SDI output.

Couldn't agree more! It's an amazing tool, especially if you shoot both photo and video. It's a great B cam, but I don't think it could take over as an A cam for the clients and needs that I have, mostly for the things you described (XLR, ND, SDI). The image quality is top notch though.

Just sold my C200 last month. It was a great camera for my needs. Limitations were its low light performance and not having a 10-bit codec option. If it had a 10-bit codec option it would have been near perfect. That said it's still a great value in 2023 given Canon's recent price drops. Personally, I've been hoping and waiting for the rumored C200 mark ii possibly being announced next month at NAB. In the meantime, I'm shooting with the Sony A7S iii and looking forward to coming back to Canon when it makes sense.

Hi Kacey, great comment. I'm mostly in the same boat. Love my C200, also wish it had a 10 bit option for quicker turn around. And also waiting to see what happens at NAB here in a month. Waiting patiently...

Mac’s have always been terrible with the Canon RAW footage. If you are editing on a PC with a decent Nvidia GPU the editing experience has been fantastic since day one. Mac’s don’t have the GPU horsepower or the bandwidth for a lot of higher end video formats. Apple will sell you a machine for $5000 that can handle it, while a $2000 PC can do it even better.
@dustinschmidtphoto

I do wish my MacBook Pro was better in that regard, but I can't swap if for a PC. I have too many other things where the Mac is better utilized. But the new M3 Macs do handle the canon raw much better at least.

Can you speak on 4K file size for the R5C compared to say the C100 mkii? I’m looking to upgrade my c100 mkii and it’s between the c200 and the R5C….any inputs?
@dustinschmidtphoto
@dustinschmidtphoto 17 күн бұрын
I can’t speak specifically to file sizes. I’m just not sure what data rates the C100 MkII puts out as a direct comparison to the same 4k file from the R5c. That info may be out there though. But I can say that I would 100% get an R5c over the c200. The c200 is cheaper at this point and is still great if you have the ability to shoot raw and convert yourself in post. But the lack of a 10 bit codec on the c200 is a deal breaker for me at this point.

Awesome vid. Quick q: when matching the two cams, what do you find are the best matching profiles for quick turnaround. As in: I’m handing footage right to the client who probably cannot grade.
@dustinschmidtphoto
@dustinschmidtphoto Жыл бұрын
If I'm shooting both my C200 and R5c together to match up later, AND I'm able to apply a quick color grade, then I would be shooting 4k XF-AVC in Clog3 on the R5c and the RAW on the C200 in Clog3. Then I'd convert both to Canon's official Rec709 Wide DR profile for quick delivery. If you have to hand over directly after the shoot then I'd just shoot both with the built in Rec709 Wide DR profile. But the Canon C200 would have to be shot in the 4k 4:2:0 8 bit unfortunately.

If you need some of the ports and extra features of the C200 that you can’t get from a smaller mirrorless then it’s still a good value. But it’s definitely getting long in the tooth.

Good technical comparision! I watched it I because I use the C70 as an A cam and I think of buying a used c200 or a well rigged R8 as a B cam to replace my c100mkII. They are both cheaper than R5C. Any thoughts? BTW your bunny model starring in the dynamic range section is so sweet that it was hard to focus what youve said there:)
@dustinschmidtphoto
@dustinschmidtphoto Жыл бұрын
Hey @tankurttekin_ thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words! I can't speak to the R8 since I haven't shot with it, but I will say that the C200 is still very much a workhorse camera for me. If you keep it very minimally rigged then it's not very big, especially if you get the C200B version that doesn't have the viewfinder. The built in XLR's are huge for audio and a better implementation than needing to run the Tascam hotshoe adapter with the R5C for instance. (I have both setups and it's just way less clunky to run audio into the C200.) The C200 can be had for VERY cheap nowadays. Easily below $2k if you're willing to look around a bit. And the RAW out of the C200 is fantastic. It's typically the codec I shoot with it, unless I just need some 8 bit for KZbin talking head or something. I've even shot the the C200 8 bit as a B cam angle next to a C300 III that was shooting 10 bit 4k All-I and matched them up without issue. All that to say, the C200 is still very much a viable camera for me on jobs in 2023.

Do I need an external battery to shoot super 35 6k 60 fps or super 16 3k 60 fps on R5c, as in 8k 60 fps?

No. Only 8K 60 fps requires an external power source as I understand it.

Which gimbal are you using with the R5C? Does it fit the new DJI RS 3 or do you need the RS3 Pro? Thinking about the extended fan/back...
@dustinschmidtphoto
@dustinschmidtphoto Жыл бұрын
I use the original Ronin S. The R5c is still an incredibly small camera, so the extended fan/back shouldn't be an issue on the RS3 or the RS3 pro, which handle way more weight and have more adjustment than the original Ronin S I use it on.

Hi, thanks for the video. When you set the base ISO at 3200, where do you set the other ISO. I mean, there are two parameters of ISO: the base ISO and other one that you can modify. I just don`t understand that part. Thanks again.
@dustinschmidtphoto
@dustinschmidtphoto Жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure what you mean. The Canon R5c has a dual base iso of 800 and 3200. You simply go into your camera setup menu, then submenu number 2, and select "3200" for the Base Iso setting. Done. Nothing further needed.

@@dustinschmidtphoto You can select 2 base iSO's simultaneously on the R5C - eg. set the base ISO at 3200 and select 800 for the regular ISO results in very clean shadows when shooting in low light.The base ISO setting can be found under second menu under the camera icon. It can be assigned to a button for easy access.
@dustinschmidtphoto
@dustinschmidtphoto Жыл бұрын
@@csound55 You are correct in that the R5c is a dual native iso camera. But not at the same time. You can only be in one native iso at a time, either in the low 800 base iso or the high 3200 base iso. Those iso's also change depending on which gamma you are shooting. Canon Log 3, RAW, Wide DR, LG, BT. 709, etc. Now, once you have selected a base iso you CAN then choose to apply additional amplification of the signal if you'd like. For example, you can be in the base iso 800, but still shift your iso to 1600. My main point is that I shoot only at the base 800 for anything that has adequate lighting and once I can't get proper exposure between my aperture, iso and the lighting at my disposal with the base 800 then I'd be inclined to go to the 3200 base.

Good job. Both camera's deliver great images. Canon R5c many codecs and Canon c200 crippled by only 8 bit 4K with sd cards or megadata RAW with CF fastcards. I own a c200 because more reliabilty, no heating problems, nd filters, long batterytime and many buttons on the body it self. But of course the R5c has many advantages too, which the c200 has not.
