Been getting recomended a lot of these kinds of videos because I've recently picked up backpacking. I'm 71 and I wanted to climb Mt. Rainier since I was a kid but I never did. I regret it - don't grow old and live with regret. I did do St. Helens 5 years ago!

You only regret it because you imagine yourself making the climb and living to talk about it. If you were one of the more than 400 people who had died on Mount Rainier since government records were first kept and you could see yourself in death lying broken and gasping in a crevasse, you might not look back on your decision with such romanticism.

I'd rather chase goals, pursue things I'm passionate about, and answer the call to adventure even if it means I risk dying at a younger age. Besides there are 10,000 attempts at Rainier every year and on average only 2 deaths per year, so about two hundredths of one percent of the people who attempt perish, and I imagine most of those deaths weren't from people doing the safest most accessible route. You should read the statistics on how dangerous driving a car is, you'd never leave your house. @deblewis8374 congrats on St. Helens!

Parents, wives, children...friends: they bear the toll for this mania when things go sideways. I took risks as a pilot while in the armed forces. I could have bought it five times by the time I was 26--but I never pushed the envelope for self-gratification and while I make a decent living as a pilot for a major, more than 20 years later, I would never piss away $150k for a buzz or because something was "fun"--only for me. These people are not astronauts collecting rocks to advance our knowledge of the cosmos. They are not "Doctors Without Borders" waging war against disease and disaster. They are people with money to burn who have a perverse need to test their personal limits. I wonder how many people entombed in the death zone would say, "Absolutely. I'd follow my heart again to this Godforsaken place."

@@Osmonius I get where you’re coming from. But economically, Sherpas take on this risky work because the pay is significantly better than other local jobs, allowing them to support their families. It’s a voluntary exchange where both parties benefit: climbers get the assistance they need, and Sherpas earn a much-needed income. Ethically, though, it’s still valid to question whether it’s right to risk someone’s life for an adventure, even if they choose it. In an ideal world, climbers wouldn’t have to rely on others to face such dangers, but unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. The economics make sense, but that doesn’t erase the responsibility climbers have to consider the safety and well-being of those who support them. Overall, it’s a pretty nuanced topic and it’s not black and white. You don’t have to respect climbers wanting their services if you don’t want to, but you can’t deny that it helps Sherpas financially, as they’re earning way above the average Nepali.

I watched this video after discovering your channel after posting your eventual climb. This was very inspirational. You should do a retrospective and talk about if you feel it was worth it a week, a year, a decade down the line. my opinion is, the longer you live post climb, the more youll cherish the fact that you decided to do this. Money comes and goes, you climbed the biggest mountain possible. Thats worth more than any car. Also, for your minecraft channel, you should build a dumbed down version of the everest climb with the major landmarks. Obviously a 1:1 Replica would be insane but i think you could get the point across without spending the next 30 years of freetime doing it lol. Subbed

I know at your age insurance doesn't seem like a big deal, but trust me any time you can buy insurance it's always worth it. It's always better to have it and not need it. I live in a high wildfire area in Northern California and in California insurance companies have cancelled people's homeowners policies. Since March I've been unable to get homeowners insurance, and so far there have been 3 fires start right near me, one right over the back fence of my property. I know we are talking about two different kinds of insurance, but please believe me it's always worth it to have. But I am so happy you were able to summit Everest, and you looked like you did it pretty well. Did you ever find out why your Sherpa was racing back down from the summit so quickly?

I just turned 50 and almost got killed in the head on collision when a semi hit my semi I shouldn’t be alive. It only happened 10 days ago if I could tell you anything or give you any advice you live your life to your fullest who cares what people say Keep living life on the edge and the way that you’re doing it you will never regret it. Had I died in the accident I didn’t even have time to think about my life or that it was ending. There wasn’t any time for that nothing matter in that moment. Please get insurance for everything that you do if I didn’t have insurance, I would be. Fu%$@d right now. And if the guy that hit me didn’t have insurance, it would’ve completely destroyed my business. I did lose my truck and trailer in the accident so that was about $100,000 lost that day not to mention my injuries.
