Why I Split a 50k Subscriber YouTube Channel into Two Niches (With Analytics)

My KZbin channel grew to 50,000 subscribers in only 9 months, but I'm splitting it into two channels. Using KZbin analytics and a discussion of the algorithm, I explain why I'm making a big change to a very successful KZbin channel. I do think you made the right decision, and it's probably less of a hassle to do it now than to wait. You mentioned the large content creators in your video. I think what's different for them is that once they become well-known, they have a large core following and have a lot more flexibility to post what they want. I know Gary Vaynerchuk says that "you are your niche" or something like that. That's probably true once you're well-known. But I understand that starting out, the algorithm can find your intended audience more easily if you stay within a well-defined niche. Best wishes with your decision.

Thanks! I think you're probably right about the large creators. Once they're big, I'd guess their audience consists of many sub-groups of interest, so the creator can post a video and get a lot of views even if the topic may be a little off from their core.@@JeffreyKnuppelMD

I think the problem is that Personal Finance is a hot niche, because everyone wants to improve their finances. But on the other hand, there is not much content covering entrepreneurship, and less as you do, showing their data and being trasparent as you do. And that's whta I love about your content. I don't blame you for experimenting, because that's the real way to improve in business, and it is interesting how you show all this estrategy.

That could be a big part of it... a hotly competitive niche (personal finance) vs a less competitive niche (entrepreneurship).

I've not done a ton to promote the new channel. I mentioned the new channel in this video, and I posted a few things in the Community tab to let people know about it and try to encourage people to go over and take a look. I think that was about it.

Interesting. Makes sense. This is a zany suggestion, but Halloween is coming up. It would be fun to see a serious money or entrepreneurship video, perhaps connected to the holiday in some way, with you wearing a silly unicorn mask or some other Halloween costume. Maybe with some other holiday decor around. Just a thought!

Your channel is a gold mine of interesting insights and observations, and you do them well (I think I prefer the deeper thinking of your videos to channels like Ali Abdaal … At least I’ve watched more of yours than his!). But your incremental improvements probably have paid off over time.

Hi Willian - Just popped over to your other channel and interesting to observe a not too dissimilar pattern there, though you’ve got a great number of views and subscribers for just 10 videos. I’d suggest understanding why the algorithm does things is not an exact science and human behavior plays a big role, especially in regards to what’s trending, as I imagine the algorithm also takes into account what other similar videos are being watched.

And you will be surprised sometimes, maybe your new channel might go viral. Why not trying to clip some videos with Shorts for example? Just an idea - Thanks for all you do!

I only have a rough format, which is to (try to) state an interesting idea that I'll address in the video, then go through it point by point without too much fluff (or the audience gets bored and leaves), and then deliver the punchline at the end. Kind of like telling a story. I write out a script for each video, which takes time, but it works better for me when time to film it.

Well done! I'm facing a similar dilemma now, though on a much lower scale. Isn't it a problem to move published videos from one channel to your new channel? Regarding mistaken copyright strikes by KZbin algo or performance issues for republishing content elsewhere?

I was wondering about that, but I didn't have any issues. When I moved a video from the original channel to the new channel, I just removed it from the original channel before posting it to the new channel. That way it wasn't live on two channels at once.

This makes sense, and lines up with what one of the reaction channels I follow was talking about. His channel got flooded with teeny-boppers due to Shorts, but they weren't his real demographic, so his full-length videos started tanking, because his new demographic was not interested in them. So they didn't get spread wider like they used to. He's basically starting fresh to rebuild his channel's demo. Being one of those people who's more into entrepreneurship, I'm going to do your new channel a favor and NOT subscribe. :-) But I'm all in on this one! Another great video, and damn, your smile is infectious. 🙂

Only downside is that you’d have to make twice as many videos to post at the same frequency on both channels. Might be a sweet spot there too though depending on the specific niches etc.
