Free natural hair is an all day process. I’m so happy to be loc’d now. It’s so peaceful and I’m happy that the shrinkage isn’t as crazy with my locs. And I have become more woke and invested in loving on myself outside of my hair because of it! 💙

I started my locs because I was going through this phase where none of my products worked for me. My hair was just overwhelmed and I was frustrated cuz I had no idea what to do. I just woke up one day and said I'm going to try this again. Also I was really over everything that came with loose natural hair especially products and the comparison that I found myself doing in terms of curl pattern and length. I also just adored locs so muchhhh and I think that they'll help me with my confidence a lot

I started my locs because I have always loved them. All of the women in my family that live up north have them as they got older. I used to say natural by 25, locs by 40 but I got to 30 and was like....it's time. Locs were always my end goal but I wanted to try every hairstyle and color first lol.

I also started my locs with two strand twists in August 2018. I usually kept my hair in braids because it was so thick and difficult to manage. I've always loved locs and was inspired by Chloe and Halle. I wanted to wear my natural hair without having to style it everyday. Getting locs was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's such low maintenance and the amount of styles are endless.❤

Same! I started my locs July of 2018. Since childhood, I kept my hair in braids (mainly box braids). Then I went to perms. My hair stayed so brittle even with the kiddie perms 😩. So, I went to ponytails. In 2010, I finally decided to embrace my natural texture. For the next 5 years, I had all kinds of styles: wigs, sew ins, short cut, braids, fros... . I was looking for "my style". I tried locs for maybe 2 months in 2015. I had no clue what I was doing 😂....plus locs wasnt really a "thing" where I lived, so my resources were limited. That dryness, itch, and fuzz made me take them out! Then, in 2016, I started going through a spiritual journey (but I was unaware of what it was at that time). As I learned more about me and started to love ME and every natural God-given part of me, I went back to locs. For one, I learned I don't like maintaining my hair. Two, my hair grows when I leave it alone. Three, my favorite go-to style was faux locs. So, I figured why not just get real locs?! 🤷🏾‍♀️ It's the best hair decision I've made. 🙌🏾 Thank you for the content. Your locs are pretty and your personality is cute 😁💛💛.

The reason I started my loc journey, because I love the natural look. I always a hard time finding the best product for my hair. I always like the loc'd look. However I was nervous of locking my hair, because I knew my hair would shrink and I never knew how I'll look with shorter hair. I finally decided to do in Sept 9 of last year and I'm loving every moment.

In the tail end of the 90s early 2000’s I was growing out my perm and doing my own hair..I was getting braids, twist and weaves to grow the perm out. I did it for a while, then I would ditch that and just do blowouts, flat iron and slap on a ponytail. Lol Then I started to think if locs would work for me and did my research on sister locs vs locs. I tested out Marley locs and I loved it. The music artist Res and how she wore her twist looked amazing to me, followed by Lauryn Hill and her beautiful locs. That was it for me and I went and got locs ditching the comb in 2003. For me I just love the freedom of not combing my hair and spending hours fighting to figure out what to do with it. My girlfriend used locs to grow out her hair just to comb it out thinking she’s going to keep the length and she did it twice lol and now she’s back to fighting with her loose hair, braiding it or buying wigs...I don’t need that headache. People would ask me if I’m going to cut my locs but I don’t want too and I don’t feel like I’m missing have my hair “free” as some like to say. I’m comfortable with myself and my locs. I’m getting better with just having my hair puff out and not retwist as often. Just let it be.

Getting microlocs was one of the best decision of my life. I used to dread wash days and detangling. I have 801 microlocs. It looks just like my loose natural curl pattern and all. It's just now I get to skip the whole 10 hr combing sessions. I actually love wash days now. I also feel brave enough to try colors and new styles. It's just been awesome.

I went natural back in 2001 before natural hair had taken off big time. Loved it for 4 years! During that time I began really loving and admiring locs and started them myself in 2006 (175 locs but combined down to 50 over the years). After lots of life changes (stressful, but good growth) I needed to be done with that set of locs. I contemplated for 2 years and then cut them off; this was at the 12 year mark. *BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOCS* so I washed that little bit of hair left and immediately started this set which is 3 years in March! *Loc'd life is for me* and I'm loving this thick loc (50 locs) journey!

I had a professor/mentor in university who had locs. I admire her and adore her with all of my heart. She was one of the only 2 professors in uni that was black and the only one of those two that I felt I could relate to, felt seen and heard, and trusted. Anyways, I remember after my first semester with her I thought ‘when I was older (maybe around 40) I’d get locs’. Fast forward and over the past year or so I slowly started thinking about locs more until now it’s all I can think about. I had crushes on guys with locs and I just really admired the beauty of it. Also paired with ppl in my family and a friend recently stating that they are gonna do locs or are considering it AND me feeling drawn to it perhaps by my ancestors from the Jamaican part of my heritage-I just can’t get it off my mind. I plan to wait till my hair is healthier and quite a bit longer to start bc i already did the super short hair thing (and am currently growing it out). My only concern is my mom-she doesn’t want me to get them. I mean that’s not gonna really stop me. There’s plenty of things she didn’t want me to do with my hair but I did it anyway and I’m really glad I did. So, won’t really stop me moving forwards. But still I care what my mom thinks.

Hello. I started my second set of locs on 12 27 19. My first set I wore from 01 01 2000 to 7 31 2006. They got long thick and hot. I knew that eventually I would return to locs. I am 60 years old and my loose natural hair became to much of a hassle. Locs are beautiful so here I am once again never to return to loose natural again. Enjoy your journey.

i started my loc journey because i was dealing with some hair falling out back in 2017 and 2018 due to trying to prepare for high school and dealing with a family loss. i just wasn’t my best self and i was tired of my hair getting shorter shorter.. like even when i would get it flat ironed. so before 9th grade i decided to get locs and after doing research and getting advice from my mom’s friends. i am now a junior in high school and absolutely love them. i’m knowing and being more of who i am and not so much self conscious of how my hair looks for others but for me!🤎

i'm 3 months in like a week and i want to semi freeform to keep some thickness. so i'm just wondering when you stopped retwisting/palm rolling all the way down the loc and switched to just twisting the root? if you ever even did that to begin with. i know they say to palm roll when you first start so your locs can be somewhat cylindrical and train them. i'm super curious about this.

Oh em gee how exciting! Ahh gotcha, I actually never palm rolled all the way down! So if you want them to be semi-freeform that's definitely the way to go ☺️

I’m going to loc my hair because, like you said, I’ve changed my hair a million times trying to find my style. I finally found it and it’s locs!!! I’ve manipulated, straightened, dyed my hair for YEARS and surprisingly I actually don’t like doing my hair.
