I always found that Terraria shared the endless possibilities aspect with Minecraft, but then add a huge variety of blocks, styles, enemies, weapons bosses, events etc to the mix and I just can't seem to leave the game alone... and that's without the insane amount of mods which essentially quadruple the size of the game

You know what i have never thought about this but you're completely right that every terraria update is met with positivity, and that is a rare thing. The developers seem so approachable and dedicated to our enjoyment rather than money or anything else. They seem to understand the balance between changing too little and too much. The developers are so in-touch with their community, and that is an even rarer thing.

I remember discovering Terraria back in 2015 when Nintendo announced the 3DS version, I didn't know what it was since I didn't have easy access to the internet but when I did I would look up anything related to terraria and thought that this game would be fun to try so for christmas I grabbed the 3DS version along with the Xbox 360 Version (Which I still have) and after spending a few weeks playing it I had a hard time putting it down because I was having so much fun playing it blind and discovering things myself...I still remember the adrenaline rush I had when I beat Eye of Cthulhu for the first time . Once I had access to my own laptop in 2017 I grabbed the PC version and I've put so many hours into it and that's before I dove into the modding because it's always fun adding more ingredients to the already good dish to taste the new flavor. To this day I still find myself enjoying Terraria because I normally set goals outside of the normal objectives like when journey's end came out I set myself a goal to not only research every obtainable item in the game but to also 100% the bestiary which I'm still working on to this day and once its done I shall look back at the progress I've made over the course of the journey

I'm a person with around 8.5k hours in vanilla and 5k hours in tmod, around 2k hours are shared between them, anyways, i've been playing terraria for 8 to 9 years now, starting in 1.1 and spent most of my time in 1.3.5 and only started playing modded after vanilla 1.4 was released. so i've mostly been playing mods for the past year or 2 with occational vanilla runs. I never really used the wiki and just learned through experiance and just enjoying watching my favorite Terraria youtubers play the game, but thanks to my almost excessive play time and brain that's wired to take note of small details, i've mostly exhusted all information about the base game, and now i'm coming to the informational end of calamity as well, with my easaly over 4k hours in it. I generally get board of most things once i no longer have anything new to learn about them, so i've started doing challenge runs, some very masochistic even, but i'm now using the knowledge i have of the game to craft runs where i need to fundimentaly change how i approach the game. I currently have a list of over 35 differant mostly calamity based challenge runs i still have yet to do, and i keep coming up with new ones almost every month at the least, and that's how i keep myself loving Terraria even to this day after i have spent way over a year of my life playing the game. I'm also very lucky to have a really good mind to absorb information about things i like, so i can get pretty much the same amount of enjoyment out of me watching a terraria video, as the person making the vidoe got from playing and making the video, so i don't even need to actually play Terraria to get the same level of enjoyment out of it, as long as i just watch something i can resonate with. I also have a tendensy to write essey style text walls about stuff i enjoy, mostly Terraria, to discusse Terraria and share in my love for the game, with anyone who takes the time to read those text walls fully. Obviusly i've taken a lot breaks over the years from games, but Terraria is the only one i come back to with the same exitement i had when first learning it, after the burnout i cause myself, with the way i enjoy games. Thank you for a very thought provoking video and Thank you whoever you are that read all that. : )

I actively enjoy scouring the wiki for obscure knowledge like the ins and outs of health regeneration and fishing. I'm like the posterboy of a terrasteel viewer lol. I see the merit of letting yourself discover things, and perhaps i will if i ever start playing modded. But I have just as much fun if i go on a good wiki crawl every time i encounter something new

i think the big core difference, the single thing that fundamentally differentiates minecraft and terraria, is that while both are made by companies now, terraria's devs still love the game whereas minecraft's devs, while many of them probably like it, generally it's still just seen as work, their job. Relogic can't help making more "final updates" because they like the game and like working on it, whereas minecraft's devs make more updates to keep their jobs because the microsoft overlords want to keep their money cow relevant. This doesn't just affect the updates themselves but their interactions with the community, you can go on the terraria forums and see stuff like axes v trees or request features with there being a decent chance that red actually sees and implements them, whereas mojang would gladly throw literally their entire commuity under the bus with stuff like chat reporting and cut corners with stuff like mob votes (instead of just, adding all 3 mobs, jesus mojang they're rarely even that complicated) if it makes them more money.

The biggest aspect for me is that in Terraria I have a lot more to do, I am not a big fan building and other similar self imposed progression and Terrarias weapon and boss progression is just top tier. Minecraft on the other hand has so little to offer in that regard so I very quickly get bored of it, all the biomes are neat to explore but outside of the blocks you find and other aesthetic differences they just feel very shallow so I never go out of my way to explore them.

Minecraft mods are more fun in my opinion. Instead of just fighting bosses or killing enemys all day, in Minecraft you can explore, automate, fight bosses. Yeah, you can "explore" and "automate" but its just not that fun its a 2d map where you just go back in forth so I don't find the fun in that. You say "If someone says that Minecraft is waaaaay better than Terraria, I instantly know that they haven't played Terraria." but if you played Minecraft modded and sh you would know that its actually fun.

Man, mods help a LOT there are arguably better mods compared to Minecraft to an insane level of being like a terraria 2, Calamity, Thorium and even the new ones coming out like Mod of Redemption. I do think for some people reading the wiki on failure, setting goals and completing the challenge helps staying engaged. On it's own it is really shocking how Terraria hasn't gotten old. My reason is the bosses, it's insanely grindy even on normal difficulty. But they're done in such a way that no matter how many playthroughs you have when you beat a boss you still feel the achievement. Props to the devs for making such a remarkable game and being so community driven. I'll never forget this game.
