In my opinion, one of the main reasons Minecraft succeeded over Terraria is due to the difference in how accessible and how simple the game is, making Minecraft played by a much younger audience (6 ~ 11 year old kids) due to its simplicity and how easy it is, and terraria is a much more complicated and difficult game, making its self targeted to an older audience. Frankly, I think what it needs the most is things that are actually meaningful. I’ve had some of the best fun in the game in a modpack that forces you to find new food sources as old ones lose their nutritional value when you overuse them, nerves beds so that you actually need to build a proper base to survive the night, and adds seasons so that you need to prepare for the cold winter (among other things). I made that modpack in an effort to make the game difficult, but it wasn’t. I didn’t die once. Instead, it made the game very rewarding and satisfying to play, since everything you did actually had a purpose. In modern Minecraft that just isn’t the case. Why build a nice and safe base when you can just skip the night with a bed? Why find more food sources and build farms for them when a single farm is all you need? Why build a railroad system when the elytra is so much faster anyway?

Personally one of the strongest points of Terraria (something that Vinesauce Vinny noticed), is the addictive and fluid progression system. No matter what you do, there is most of the time something that lies ahead of it. Diving into the depths for ore? Well, how about these relics, statues, traps, enemy drops, rare foes and items, dye plants/ fungi, mini-biomes that you can find? Exploring the Surface? You shall meet new habitats with new wood materials, plants, and new creatures and dangers, but you must brave these areas in order to find more beyond them. Maybe these lands could give you new ideas for building too? Going to the side of the depths? Well, get ready for a rude awakening to unseen depths of biomes that seemed fairly tame on the surface, but will rip out your spine if you ever drop your guard and expect a easy time like on it's surface. And yet, these areas hold unique treasures, even the seemingly empty Desert itself. It WILL put you through the wringer. Going even further down? Well, you will be greeted by the Underworld and it's residents with the most hostile of welcome. Explore all you want, but it will make you feel like there is something that you missed elsewhere.. And then there's the NPCs that add, and clarify parts of progression. Many things that you do will have a impact on most of these people. Even someone as missable and ignorable as the Angler, will have you revisiting many places that you have seen before, and you will find things that you never obtained in your first travel through. Even the Pilon system gives incentive to build in places that are out of your comfort zone. And if you're inclined, the NPC Happiness system will have you considering each person's personalities and relationships. But you will be rewarded for it. So many elements, even smaller things like seemingly unneeded items and accessories, tie in with something later, i.e: fusing weapons and accessories on occasion. And the Guide is there to help more than we may first think..

while progression is the reason why players leave their worlds forever once they beat the game, in my opinion, it's not the reason why it's less successful than Minecraft, but instead is the Minecraft's success in KZbin as a content creation machine, way better than terraria is, in Minecraft the world is a blank canvas that the players can draw anything they want on it for many to look at and enjoy, terraria has the content already built in to it for only the player himself to enjoy. of course they can show it to their friends schoolmates or even in a KZbin video, but they are most likely not gonna understand the efforts put into that stuff or even appreciate it unless they already played the games, which doesn't help to attract new players unlike Minecraft where you don't need to have ever played the game to appreciate a good building or a redstone machine thus attracting them to the game. another point is that terraria only gets harder and harder to replay as repeating the same tasks of obtaining the same gear, building NPC housing, fighting the same bosses, running into the same events is really boring leading burn out of the game, while in Minecraft, you are the writer of your story and each story is unique and grands the feeling of achievement and pride. i really liked playing terraria, and over 7 years, i still enjoy Minecraft, and have only explored a drop of a sea of possibilities to explore

One of the few videos that manage to understand exactly what it is that makes Minecraft so widely appealing. That freedom. The ability to only be limited to your imagination. I kind of disagree with people who say Minecraft is just for kids. Just because Minecraft was created for children doesn't mean only children can enjoy it. I mean, how is it different from Terraria when it's also only for a certain type of player? The beauty of Minecraft, as people say, is its simplicity and that makes it accessible to all types of players (Seriously, I thought we were done with the whole "Minecraft is only for for children" then?). I do have a few things to say regarding this topic: Minecraft has servers. Pretty much all of them aren't modded and are made using command blocks. These offer a way bigger array of things to do and are in my opinion a big reason why Minecraft is still popular and grew to this popularity in the first place. Also the best servers are on java, and since I mentioned java I have to say that it is quite different from bedrock, the most notable change for me being the fighting mechanics on the newer versions (for anyone that doesn't know axes do more damage than swords, but are slower, however they can also break shields so you can't just sit there and block everything, you also can't just spam with a weapon). You also mentioned that there aren't a lot of things to get good at in MC, and with that I disagree. Don't get me wrong, Terraria is my favourite game of all time and Minecraft is probably around 10th, but I think that there is a good amount of things to "git gud" in Minecraft: building, speedrunning, redstone and fighting which is especially hard to master on java when doing pvp. However these are all basically things that you can get good at in Terraria. Creativity is a must when it comes to playing Minecraft consistently and for a long time. Some people really like grinding 10 hours to get blocks to build something impressive because the felling of seeing a charming and towering build that you made is what they want. I'm not getting into the modded stuff but both games become greater when good mods are installed. Look, I have spent so long playing Terraria (mainly long playthroughs) across 4 different devices that I don't have to go on the wiki except only when I want to take a look at some really nerdy stuff like luck. I don't want to say that Minecraft is better, just that most people that make a video on the "Terraria is/isn't better than Minecraft" topic don't know both the games to their core, they might not know their communities, their devs etc. but you took a lot of little details into consideration and I really apreciate that. As you said at one point, both the games went off their separate directions and I don't think it's this easy to fairly compare them. It's just personal preference.

Another big problem is the that they are starting to demand that players play by their rules despite claiming that they are making the game for everyone. They are working on removing names without adding a display name system and banning skins because they don't follow their guidelines. If those changes go through, then all the respect I have for them will dwindle fast. Minecraft is a game for everyone to use to its full potential. Nude skins have their place and don't belong everywhere. Offensive names are a problem and shouldn't be used as IDs. But these rules aren't for everyone so forcing everyone to follow them on every server is a huge problem for freedom and the free web. All they need to do is let players have server by server display names and only have skin limits on appropriate servers.

@@kratelox7383 They wouldn't. The problem is that they are enforcing these rules everywhere that they don't belong. Various people would rather use minecraft in other ways that deserve to be appreciated or at least just left alone. If minecraft is really for everyone, then why are they trying to sabotage all these different forms of expression, even on privately owned servers? They have all the right to enforce those rules on their own servers and prevent other servers from appearing in any official server browser if they break the rules, but they have no business limiting servers that are ran on privately own hardware and software copies. (I believe our software is our own even if eula and contracts say otherwise. They are too long and a waste of time when it comes to gaming.)

Personally, I like both games but Minecraft appeals more in a couple different ways. It is a lot more visually appealing. In Minecraft, there are some cases of beautiful scenery that can't be replicated by Terraria's limited pixel. Especially adding shader and texture packs. Also, Terraria can be extremely grindy and constantly needing to find new items in order to keep up with the world enemies and bosses. It kinda feels like a constant stress for getting stronger which I found really fun but I also found it tedious at times which can be the reason why its not made for the mass public. Minecraft is much more calm and just feels like you have way more freedom to do what you want. You can choose to become a PVP warlord, be a master builder, redstone mechanic, or some random hobby like building the biggest farm or mass slaughtering animals. It just feels like even though quantity-wise there are less things to get or do, it feels so much more detailed and niche to try to pursue something in a Minecraft world. Idk that's just my thoughts.

Building in Terraria is actually crazy good. With so much variety in building materials and furniture and the option to paint and hammer blocks builds can look extremely stunning. I've spent my fair share of time just building stuff in the game. I think the building aspect is better than in Minecraft, but it doesn't offer the excitement of picking that perfect location in the world, that beautiful cliffside at an ocean, or a big mountaintop with an amazing view of the surrounding land that really helps the build to feel like it's in a distinct, unique place in the world. In Terraria, a house in the forest biome, no matter how detailed or pretty, is always just gonna feel like a house in a forest biome. Even if the game had more unique landmarks the limited view of the screen wouldn't make building around them that much more worth it.

So, I also think Minecraft's popularity comes from the creativity based sandbox gameplay, with all the different possibilities, but adding a real progression system wouldn't hurt it that much, sure, the focus may shift a bit, but with Minecraft's step by step updates, I think it would not destroy the other aspect. I think, Terraria needs more sandbox features, because again, it wouldn't destroy the already existing progression, but would a another layer of gameplay, another optional type of experience. Minecraft should have a really good and large progression system, but it shouldn't urge the player to progress in the story, but try to encourage the creativity aspect. So basically, no quest page with an exclemation mark, when you have a quest, and an arrow on your compass, but just an expansion of the already existing progression. Just add a bit more crazy terrain generation, a completely overhauled end, and the whole sulk thing, and boom, you had more gameplay. All of the sandbox options minecraft offers you right now are boring, because they're so extremely time consuming, with no inner motivation to do it. I'm not a builder, map creator, or whatever minecraft wants you to be, all the servers and datapacks are just vanilla+, so I ONLY play with mods, or on the Origin Realms server. I just... minecraft isn't fun anymore, we have already done every interesting thing in it, and there's nothing left to do. I'm no BastiGHG who comes up with, over the time repetetive challenges, to alter the gameplay a tiny bit. I'm missing something groundbreaking. I think Minecraft lives off the frequent updates. If they stopped, it would also slowly fade away. And at this moment, the updates quality is descending quite quickly. I hope Minecraft can rise again, because I love that game, and I want to be able to enjoy it again... thy to all the people who were reading this entire comment, I put all of my emotions and feelings in. Terraria, in the other hand, was leaked unfinished, took some time to recover and made some adds. Now it has a comic and some other merch, but its all mostly for fans. At this point i wouldnt be surprised if Minecrafts marketing team was much bigger than Re-Logic in its entirety.

I hard disagree, most games are linear progression based, that's usually what makes a good game a good game. Gamers like to feel as though they're getting somewhere, more powerful in some way. But minecraft is different in that it's more open, but a lot of people get bored with how open it is, with seemingly no point. There's a reason that people make jokes or memes about the 2 week minecraft phase, and I ultimately think that's harmful to the game in the long run. I think what actually holds terraria back is it's inaccessibility. in order to properly progress through the game you need guides or the wiki, and you have to at least know and understand the class system, which is not explained at all, the guide sucks, and my first full playthrough I found myself looking at guides online and relying on achievements, which admittedly aren't a terrible way to tell the player what to do. But ultimately when it comes down to it, minecraft has a better way of understanding it's progression, and it makes sense too, wood to stone to iron to diamond is kinda intuitive, whereas terraria has either copper or tin, then going to iron or lead, then tungsten or silver, then platinum or gold, and more, but intuitively it feels a little weird, and then having the equivalent ores can be confusing if you're going through more than one playthrough blind, which you should never do. Minecraft is so much more accessible in the sense that a blind player can start and enjoy minecraft where as the blind player will get frustrated with terraria.

As someone who has been playing minecraft since beta 1.6 the game is an amazing sandbox and it’s very easy to link up with people and play together. It’s awesome to have servers because people can always help out with things and you don’t feel like you lost out on progression/ the game by not being there. In terraria playing with friends if someone isn’t there for a session or does stuff by themselves people feel like they moved forward in the game without them and then aren’t as motivated to keep going cause they still want to kill a boss before the next one maybe to get a specific drop or something. With minecraft being much more open ended servers can last for years and still be played on since some machines take tens of hours to build. In terraria because there is a set end if you play with people once you beat it you move on to either a new world or a new game. There is none of that lasting reason to come back to the same world and keep building since once you’ve killed moon lord there’s not much you can do to idk make the fight easier or set up a system to kill him automatically or something. One of the reason I love minecraft so much is that anything you think you can do you can probably do it where there are small things in terraria that I think cuts into player agency. Granted I’ve only played terraria for about 40 hours just beating the mechanical bosses on an classic classic world. But the game has been far to easy even boring so I moved worlds to a classic master and it’s been much more fun cause there’s actually a challenge and a reason to prepare! So far I’ve spent 10 hours just setting things up in master world (I’m also restricting myself resource wise to the snow biome) so I can beat all the bosses I need to progress. Both games are great but when I ask people about terraria who have played it tend to just say they have played it when you ask some one if they played minecraft they tell you about their adventure and builds or ask you if you want to see them.

I found that minecraft at first I could play over and over, creating awesome things to show with my friends. I eventually moved to playing just multiplayer, and now I barely (if ever) touch survival. The thing I played minecfrat for wasn’t for the “minecrafty survival” but instead for the friends, I eventually ended up just playing bedwars on hypixel and then skyblock after that. Terraria on the other hand, I recently did a full play through trying to max out my character before defeating moonlord. Once I did defeat moonlord I didn’t know what else to do, and haven’t played since. Minecraft doesn’t just let you do so much in survival, it’s you can do the same thing in so many different ways AND join peoples servers with unique gameplay, terraria is more fun on its own but (I personally) can’t keep playing it over and over.

I see both some valid points and a fair amount of copium. Minecraft has massively more progression than terraria. it's just not a single forced path. Making massive farms, and using those materials to make more farms, or make your like easier by automating the collection of difficult-to-find resources, and even trading them if on a server. And this is just one path of progression. Making fully maxed-out gear can take many many hours of playtime after creating a world. Minecraft has a ton more progression than terraria. Its just not forced on you as much, and there are multiple paths instead of a single one (that may split and remerge at some parts but is still one path) Overall Minecraft is more appealing because it may not have set bosses like Terraria, but you can pick a thing to make progress at and make progress on that. Redstone, farms, economy, building, exploring, and im sure there are plenty more. Add to that both the social advantage Minecraft's massively better multiplayer has over Terraria and you can see how it is overall a better-designed game, as Terraria is more of a "this is cool, let's add it" type game, that has an extensive range of cool stuff, but once you've seen them all multiple times, they stop being cool. So diversity, replayability, and social interaction are the major factors. Not lack of progression just because you as a Minecraft noob don't understand intuitively how its progression systems work This was written by someone with hundreds of hours, probably thousands in BOTH games.

I think there's a core difference in how we both understand "progression." If at some point in the game, you are the most powerful thing in the world, there is no longer any game progression. In Minecraft that takes very little time when compared to Terraria and, as I mentioned in the video, it's not the point of Minecraft. You can say you can keep making progress on builds and farms but that's not game progression, that's just what a sandbox is.
@fannyboy8294 Жыл бұрын
@@Throarbin Well how are you the most powerful you can be if you don't have an easy way to get everything you wish? This is progression IMO
@Throarbin Жыл бұрын
@@fannyboy8294 Well no, because there's nothing for you to overcome. You made thing easier on yourself, yes. But it's all a self-determined goal. 13:40 That. I thought I was of the few. I remember playing with people and often getting upset at how they just kinda rushed the game, while I would play at a slow pace. And I can say for sure that makes all the content of the game actually feel tangible. And I think the issue with Minecraft right now is that very thing, the game lacks content, it doesn't necessarily have to become a linear game, but to keep adding depth to the world gen that passively urges the players to explore it (key word being Passive) and it definitely has got it right with the updates between 1.13 and 1.18, but right now all the new content doesn't work, and that's why the players are bothered, me included Terraria on the other hand is just becoming better! Its kinda weird that terraria and minecraft are even compared at all. Theyre both sandbox games yes but Doom and CoD are also both shooters. Terraria is basicly a Sandbox mini RPG, you go out in the world, get stronger and conqoure bigger and bigger foes. Minercraft is a sandbox Survival game (surivival being written very tiny) where you go out into the world and dont try to fight anyone but instead let your creativity flow freely. Yes there are both aspects present in both games but The main focus are two completly different paths of a crossroads. And if youre wondering, I personally enjoy Minecraft more. Vanilla is so chill and Modded is basicly my introdruction drug into the crack that is Factorio, Satisfactory, DSP and others.

So many people don't really understand a good portion of what makes Minecraft special. I often see people suggest absurd things like guns, while other people HEAVILY go against anything new or 'modern' because in their mind Minecraft is supposed to be 'medieval'. I've personally always loved Minecraft for what it is: A sandbox game that I can play with my friends without the need or worry about grinding or learning about too many things. Minecraft's key identity is complexity within simplicity: You only have a few buttons like Break/Place, Interact, walk and jump. Those are VERY simple yet it leads to so many complex things that is just admirable. As someone that can get easily overwhelmed by tasks and can get pretty bored without a set goal. Minecraft can get pretty boring to play alone as I've spent most of my childhood playing alone and I've never really thought or experienced on finding joy for myself so I find it in others. It makes me so happy, so excited, so thrilled to play Minecraft with my friends since they're the core part of it all. Experiences are meant to be shared, and Minecraft is an experience. The Minecraft community as a whole is pretty large and with so many people bubbling resentment and negativity builds up to the point people don't even see how much Mojang cares about the game. There are some problems with Mojang that I really wished they did better, but I can't be angry with them when I've experienced coding for myself that even the SLIGHTEST amount of change can cascade into a flurry of incompatibility. It got to bad that the modding community had to go out of their way to EXPLICITLY state that coding isn't as easy as they show it and that they don't support the community attacking the devs and using their names for their own goal. It's very saddening to see since I've cherished Minecraft as a game that breeds community, yet the community itself is seeking to ruin it. People want sharks in the game and that Mojang should make it neutral yet I wonder: What would happen to the people that play minecraft? Would they think that swimming with sharks would be good? Would parents accept that Mojang is allowing sharks to be this peaceful creature. Even shark lovers know that you have to be WEARY of them as they aren't some harmless herbivore but predators, they aren't as dangerous but they have real world consequences. The community doesn't understand that adding new armor, new weapons, new bosses, and new dimensions are TEMPORARY pleasures. Sure, we have a new stronger boss, now the community will either ask new better weapons/armor which then creates a cycle that never ends as it only escalates for the sake of that dopamine shot. People can't understand that the beauty of minecraft is the creativity, while I wish there would be vertical slabs, I wonder on how they'll implement it and on how it'll interact with other creatures like spiders. One simple pebble can create a cascade of disruption that no one thinks about as all they see how the water splashes not on how those ripples need to be calmed down for others to fully enjoy. I reallly like the video, although it does glaze Terraria. I'm not going to lie that they each have their own qualities to them. I can't ever get into terraria as it's merely 'reach X goal' without much difference or variations. Terraria is very much a different taste, and as you put it 'refined' in a way, but a refined taste doesn't always mean that it's for everyone, not even vanilla is good for everyone. I just wish that the community of these games at least appreciate and adore what the devs have given us and the many memories we had with them.

I like the idea of Minecraft remaining largely unguided and goalless, open for the player to interpret, but introducing far more things to do that require you to be at certain points in progression, some of which may tie into one another but not all. in an open-ended sandbox, the more variety there is the better, and when it fits, one thing can give you reason to do another, while staying in its general lane of doing as you see fit

Journey Mode comes more after Minecraft Education Edition than creative mode. One key aspect is any item/block in any quantity available from the time you create the world, and the ability to fly; unbound by the limitations that is called 'survival', and with cheats the ability to switch between creative and survival at will.

I love both games a whole ton (geez it's where my name comes from), but Minecraft is like you said a 'pointless' game, with infinite possibilities. However, I see that as a double edged sword (no buffs mind you), as one hand that it's fantastic that the player can expand themselves theoretically endlessly with ideas, like megabases, art, complex architecture, and so on. However it comes at the cost at either being too overwhelming or too bland at times, causing burnout unfortunately. Terraria with it's sense of how it handles progression does give the player a good idea of where there going, but it's doesn't constrain itself or be loose like Minecraft to let the player go down which ever path they desire, along with a sense of creation along the way. Is it limited sometimes? Yes, but I've heard a lot veteran players of both games say that limitation is the best motivation for creation. Excellent video man
