Every working photographer should be doing client work as well as personal projects. Daniel you are 100% correct. Personal projects are the most fun because this is we’re we get to work on what WE want. It is interesting when meeting with an art director or producer from an ad agency as they go through your book they always stop on my personal work. They can tell what was produced for a client. The reason is they know you produced this and they want to know YOUR vision for their client, how you think not an agency. You want to get hired for your vision and creativity. Personal work is where we get to show off our vision.

That's the thing, sometimes doing ultra creative and skillful projects for no money is what levels us up. Having that dollar amount and expect to work for the clients, will limit to their wants. Sometimes, it's not the best you can produce either.

Nowadays people watch 2 Daniel Schiffer videos and they are ready to get paid. Once they finally get a small gig (sending your video to the client cause they don’t have a portfolio as they never practice the style) they realize it’s actually harder than it looks even when they tried copying your videos shot for shot. Then the trend dies 🤷🏾‍♂️

Interesting. Shooting for free is important, and you are free to practice, but sometimes I agree to make commercial thing for the first time. Way more cheaper, but still I know someone expects the result. It motivates to deliver. And sometimes (almost all the time) clients do not see the can is different ;)
@WhySteve
@WhySteve 4 ай бұрын
Totally agreed man but there's a big difference between doing something for free for your own benefit like practicing, learning and portfolio work, and doing free work for people who approached you to work for "exposure". My opinion, if you're going to make a practice video, use a brand so that you can sell it to them, pitch it to them, or demo it, if it works out in the end. But I feel like you should never ever ever make a free video for a client because "we cannot afford you but we love your work and want you to make a video for us" (unless you can can benefit from it with free merch or free ads on their platforms etc, but then technically you are being compensated for your work). Great video like always!

Is it not enough to just do it for fun because you are passionate about the work? that free creative expression is what paid work stems from. When that goes away, that's when influencers retire.

So in this particular video, what would you have done differently for the can to remain consistent? I'm curious cause that's a common issue, and you can't always have the same lighting when changing angles and setups
@danielschiffer
@danielschiffer 4 ай бұрын
I would start with being more mindful of where the reflections and shadows are on the can. I'd probably change my lighting method to make everything a bit more flat and evenly lit (perhaps using a larger diffusion, closer to the can), that way it's easier to match from shot-to-shot. I would also keep my focal length more consistent in each scene so it's easier to match up the cans and the perspective doesn't drastically change.

Curious if you've ever had a free video "stolen" by a brand or, otherwise, get an offer from a brand to buy an already created video? I'm asking because I wonder if it makes sense to watermark your free/spec videos that a brand might take. Keep in mind it may be as simple as them using the "share" function and distributing your video as user-created content (still without your permission).

I just still wonder, even if you put up a bunch of personal projects, as you call them "spec work", on your platforms to show what you can do, then what? I mean how do you get in contact with some brand's marketing companies to show them what you can do to possibly get them to hire you for a job? We cant just rely on the algorithm to drive companies to our platforms to discover us. How do you go about finding clients and starting that process of conversation to get paid to do a job??
