gear seriously DOES NOT MATTER. give a Pro any camera set up, even a kids toy camera and they will still make stellar images, because they know how to translate what they see in their head into the image they capture with the camera. People will complain that the pros say gear does not matter while using expensive gear, well duh. They have put in the time and established themselves and use expensive gear because they can afford to. They do not NEED to use the expensive gear though. once you all advance your photography, you will also get to the point where you finally realize that GEAR TRULY DOES NOT MATTER. the only people that think it does are the amatuers and casual shooters.......
@dathofilms

@@orion7741 well, I consider myself Pro, been on many high production sets and each job requires specific technology to tell a story. If you would like to capture a water splash in slow motion, you need specific gear for this, if you want to have a gopro looking footage, you need a specific gear for this, if you want to have home made video, you need specific gear for it, each job requires different gear. Now this doesnt mean you can not make beautiful images with cheaper cameras, but oh Boy Gear does matter and whoever tells it doesnt, are really not understanding the question correctly.

I’m using the G7 for video and some photo work. No one has complained about the image quality. My “main” photography camera is a Nikon D3300 that has been with me for around 7 years. My only “complaint” is that none of them have dual sd card slots, but other than that, I’m quite happy with them.

Hey Nigel, you nailed it again on how shooting on a camera that shoots 1080p is still relevant. As you said a lot of people are stuck on having the latest gear and not realizing that your skill, ideas and creativeness is what is going to showcase your work, not a $5,000 camera. I feel you can make this video in 10 years and you will still smash this topic, well said Nigel!

How you nail the focus with old camera?
@Lippitydo
@Lippitydo 3 жыл бұрын
@@epoi92 focusing is all in the glass. I have invested in high quality lenses. My lenses, since on such an old body and at this point even my lenses are years old, don’t have image stabilization. To me, that means if I’m shooting in low light or on or below 1/60, I HAVE to use a tripod. That’s the only difference I see, really. All of the new tech that’s come out isn’t really all that better than what we already had. Tech in the past 20 years for digital photography has marginally progressed, not enough for me to replace anything. If I do upgrade, it’ll be to get a full frame and that’s it. All these new cameras with all the bells and whistles are just that- bells and whistles.

you're totally right, when you buy expensive gear that shoots 4k or 8k or whatever, you're not just buying the camera and that's that, you need to also get a high-end computer to edit that 4k footage, you need tons of sd cards and multiple hard drives! I watched your videos when I got into filmmaking and I wanted to get a gh3 so bad too but I couldn't find one in a good condition, later on, I stopped looking and I ended up buying a Sony A7 with a cute rig and some lenses for a good price, even though its a camera from 2014 I am just so proud of it, the footage from my Sony a7 is just amazing, I have an ad I did for a little gig I have going on if you wanna check out it's on this channel, it was shot using my a7 and a vintage lens, overall the video quality doesn't matter much, great movies were shot on 1080p , its not about the gear but the knowledge you have when it comes to this craft, anyway great video buddy! you inspired me a lot, also I learned lighting from you, but i can't find some cheap gear yet hahahha

Excellent message, Nigel. The KZbin filmmaking community is definitely the worst place for FOMO and "I need the latest gear" syndrome. It doesn't help when the creators rely on sponsorships from gear companies to make a living, which means naturally the latest and greatest is always pushed into our faces every other week. It's catch 22 in a weird way.

I completly agree, even though we own some recent cameras like the Sony A7C we allways end up shooting in 1080p because of the 120fps and the really small and easy to edit files, sometimes with a good bitrate the 1080p can even be scaled up to 4K and clients dont even notice even if I tell them that it isnt true 4K

Wow! I love this concept (just subscribed) and I've been watching the GX7, G7, GX85 and even GH4 prices and they're getting down around $300 or $400 recently😉 The GX85 is my choice (because it has such good IBIS) and I overcome the battery life issue with a faux battery, 5v to 9v converter cable and a waterproof power bank...and speaking of waterproof (well, weather-sealed) the G85 is the only one that is ALMOST on this $300 list that does have that. I am always trying to convince students about this idea of budget filmmaking and it's SOOO REFRESHING to hear you take this approach!

I didn't want to invest in the lens ecosystem since over tiem I was having no fun using the camera, so once I had enough cash I sold the body and bought a Fuji XE4 (refurbed and before all the hype so luckily I got a great deal with the kit lens). brought back the fun and love I had for photography. grateful for the part the GH3 played in my journey but I was so happy to move on from it.

I randomly dusted off my 11 year old GF1 and have been using it recently. A lot of fun to use and the image output is really good I like the rendering of the older m43 bodies. On a 27" 4k monitor or even the 24"x36" print I have hanging the 12mp is straight up gorgeous and proof that any ILC camera from the past 10 years is more than enough. I have a G9 as well. edit: the other thing that trips me out is how the 11 year old OEM batteries last forever in the GF1... like 3-4 sessions over a period of a week, ~500+ shots. Don't buy third party batteries, they swell after a few years and become unusable.

It's worth noting that modern compression algorithms like h265 have dramatically reduced the amount of space a 4k video takes up. Even Samsung's NX1 that came out in 2014 likely has files close to the size of your 1080p GH3 files. Newer codecs with ultra high bitrates take up space for sure, but there is a happy medium with 4k.

GH3 is great. I don't use it much anymore, but I used em (have 2) through most of 2017 as my main cams. Shot a $10,000 roofing commercial primarily on em, and still used em through 2019 pretty regularly. If I hadn't become addicted to autofocus for my youtube videos I'd still use em for youtube.

I shoot stills with both medium format film and MFT (talk about a radical difference?). For film, I go out with a Mamiya 645 Pro TL and C220. Up until recently for digital I used an Olympus E-M5 II and shot primarily high-res tripod shots of my abandoned interior/exterior style explorations I shot in film. I bit the bullet and bought a mint/barely used E-M1 III almost just for the handheld high-res mode. Obviously it's better in every way (unless size is a factor?), but being able to use high-res handheld is really nice even if its lower resolution compared to the tripod mode. I've also been able to use it for macro and portraits to a certain degree with high success. To me MFT gives a near film quality that I like, plus I'm already lugging around medium format film cameras, so the smaller kit is nice.

I still use a c100, circa 2012, 9 years old. Whenever I get camera envy, look online for cameras to replace it, I look at the footage I just got and realize "dang, this still looks really good". I'll eventually replace it, but this camera is still very very useful, especially in controlled situations.

First video i saw from you on my recommendations list and i subscribed. Your videos look so good and are so well paced. I had a gear syndrome a year ago but i used it as an advantage by setting myself a goal to get enough money from videos to buy a canon eos r to replace my eos m50. At the end of the year i got the eos r but sadly it did not make me any better creator over night😅 but it did make filming & editing easier and faster.

Great camera. Still using it too for video and photography for payed jobs. I would complement that you can attach a monitor to the camera because it has a full time HDMI flow. You can film up to 60p for slow motion with just a very little loss in sharpness. Most lenses will fit on this camera from c-mount vintage 16mm film cameras or close circuit cameras to all vintage photography lenses and speedboosters. You can film up to 1600 ISO as long as you expose "to the right" and get very clean image. It's a pro camera, so its very well built and reliable. The MOV all I codec is fantastic and way better than mp4. You can still edit on old and cheap computers.

I use a Pentax *istDL from 2005 almost daily I can buy the camera for as low as $20.00 on Ebay it works fine I've owned the camera since new and legacy lenses can be acquired for reasonable prices as the lens mount has not changed since the 1970's

I’m still using my 5D mark II. These days I most shoot and edit in 1080p due to speed. I upscale to 2160p on export. Plenty quality with great lenses.

I just bought my first camera, partially thanks to you, a gh4 :-) Did you know that in case you loose the cd comes with the camera, you can never ever get the software? I just spoke with panasonic to give me the photofunstudio, because I do not have the original cd, and they said "no, we do not have that opportunity anymore, 6 month ago it was shut down". Without that no file copy to windows from camera over wifi.
