Why I Still Use the Canon R6 in 2024

In this video I talk about why the Canon R6 is my choice as a professional videographer 2024. The Canon R6 is not the camera for everyone but for a lot of people including myself it's just the right balance of professionalism, quality, and budget to get the job done.

I'm using two R6 bodies (original) and love them. I don't need or want huge file sizes with all the computer power and storage headaches that come with that. Your point (at 4:07) about having identical bodies is something I have been banging on about for years. I would rather have two R6 bodies than one R3 and say an R10 back-up and the older I get the more critical that is becoming. So much so that I will have to wait until I can afford to replace both bodies with the mkii versions.

The Eos R8 is a full frame camera with the same sensor as R6ii

Nice video, but the Canon R8 isn't a crop sensor, it's full frame.

There's so many better or worse cameras out there but I love my R6, been using it for over a year now and there's been zero desire to want an upgrade. I went from an M50 to an RP and now an R6, with the first 2 cameras there was always something more that I wanted, like seeing other cameras and wanting it for it's features but ever since I got the R6 I haven't once thought about upgrading, if anything buying a second R6 or an R6 mk 2 specifically for the video mode switch and the fact that you can use the custom modes for video but I'm in no rush for such a little "want". In saying that if I predominantly shot video in a professional manner then I'd probably look into a Sony as Canon isn't as good for video as Sony. But since I shoot photos 95% of the time the R6 does enough, I honestly can't stand shooting videos for clients in the first place lol. IMO it's a goldilocks camera for me, it passes professional video and photo requirements but is still in a consumer price range, if anything I'm looking for a worse camera to run along side my R6 so I can challenge myself a bit more as I mainly shoot for a hobby

Hi guys and girls. Let’s be honest! The Canon R6 is a fantastic camera. All the nonsense regarding megapixels and video shortcomings are well BULLSHIT. I have had the R6 for over 2 yrs and its performed beautifully. Just come back from 7 days in the highlands of Scotland and the pictures I have are amazing. From family snaps to unreal landscapes! 20 megapixels isn’t enough eh ? Nonsense. Read Ken Rockwells thoughts on megapixels. This guy advised me to buy the R6 and I can’t thank the chap enough. Some of the greatest pictures on the planet where taken on cameras with less than 3 megapixels they hang in galleries and museums. 20 megapixels is more than you will ever need. The images are superb. Granted I don’t do a lot of video but when I do it’s again superb. Let’s just be honest for 99.9% of the time we mortals use cameras the R6 is way more than enough. Forget the marketing nonsense. Keep the R6 body and invest in the Glass you feel you need. I have the 24-105 f4L the 35mm 1.8 and the 16mm f2.8 they all perform fantastic just stop believing you need the next new got to have Body. YOU DONT !

Why wouldn't you still use one ? They are still great ! Amateurs can't buy a new camera every 2 years and it's not necessary when your pics are still great.

I never really understood the "canon color science" advantage because I thought professional photographers shot raw so they could manipulate and create unique colors to their own preferences and artistic vision. Canon colors are good, but has to be basic in order to work in all situations. At that point, you are using the color argument as a crutch and forsaking your own development. That being said, it is easier to start from a good base and make your own artistic decisions rather than starting from a dog water color science you would have to fix first. That's where I see the befits of canon color science.

When it comes to video it’s not worth it 90% of the time to shoot in Clog. It just simply doesn’t matter to the client or the work and it takes way longer to edit so having a good base can save you time which is very valuable. The same thing applies to some photographers, it just depends on the job and work you do. At my point in my career I don’t need to develop or practice editing anymore. The more of a “professional” you are the less your style is dependent on tweaking colors in a RAW file. It’s about styling, pre production work, concept. If you are trying to be a wedding photographer and stand out on instagram then sure, your editing style is important but for a lot of working videographers/photographers you really want whatever you are filming to just look exactly how it looks in real life, but again it’s just very dependent on the work, there are so many types of jobs, styles, niches that have their own unique workflows. I don't care for my R6 anymore. The resolution sucks, Clog3 sucks, and it overheats in 4K very quickly. I used the FX3 a few times on rent, and I want to switch assp. Using EF on R cameras isnt great either.
