It’s hard not to collect mainlines. They are just a dollar here, but the story and history behind each one is rich. I often get the cars, come home and watch Jay Lenos garage on the actual car and admire it in my collection. I think once Covid is over, it will be much easier to collect again.

Hot Wheels is a great staring point for any new dicast collector, due to their low (in most countries anyway) price. The thing is, they produce a ton of stuff these days. If you want to get everything, it can get expensive quickly. And you're right, the amount of people collecting Hot Wheels has increased tenfold in the last few years (and so did the KZbin channels about them). It has become so competitive that like you, i stopped peg hunting because it can get frustrating. I now focus on Premium Hot Wheels and other brands like Auto World, Greenlight and Mini GT wich i feel offer a better quality overall for the money you pay than most HW do these days. Thanks for making this video D.

I think some mainlines are very good, like the r390gt1, Audi rs2, Civic ek, Honda prelude. They have front and rear lights tampos and the prelude also has a Japanese plate, and it's a replica of asada's (the designer of the hw prelude and many other castings) parents car.

A lot to think about. HW premiums are often more attractive, but I customize as well as collect, so I’ll spend $1US just for the engine to use elsewhere, or buy multiple castings to cut and mash up into a Gaslander or something else. But peg hunting is exhausting, especially because the competition isn’t always scalpers also hunting, but scalpers who are employees or managers at the store itself. I have to get more plugged in on MiniGT and Tarmac Works. I always see them for $15-$20US, but I haven’t done in-depth searches. Really good topic, and a very good point.

I guess, at some point in our collecting life we all switch our attention to the premium series, it might be because of the quality, of the value, availability, or whatever other reason, but we do that! When it comes to personal opinion ... i don't collect 1:64 scale cars, because i love cars so that will not make me switch to other brands (not even for the reasons you mentioned), i collect them because i love Hot Wheels, i enjoy the brand, it has a special meaning to me, i enjoy them with the good and the bad. If it will come in the conclusion that i will stop collecting, i will stop it for good, not switch to other brands. Again, it doesn't mean i am a "fan boy" they just have a special meaning to me, they are part of my childhood, they are fun, have the variety in series and castings, have playsets, have history, have nostalgia and, especially for me they have the availability!

The reason I can't stop collecting Hotwheels mainlines is because they are so cheap. To paraphrase Motley Crue's Tommy Lee discussing his tattoo collection: "They are like potato chips. I am like OK, just one more and I'm done..but it never happens" and that is how you end up with an entire flat packed out skirting boards to ceiling with toy cars, or a full skin suit of ink (or in my case both! LOL). I recently went to visit my parents for an extended holiday and ended up coming back with 3 suitcases of diecasts and Pez dispensers (my other addiction besides Hotwheels and tattoos) that most definitely was NOT planned and I now have to think seriously how and where to display them as there is literally no space left for them anywhere in my home apart from the ceilings so I am looking into various ways of mounting them up there. Oh well. There are worse vices to have I guess... ;-)

Totally agree 👍 mainline hot wheels are made for kids rather than collectors. As for the increase in collectors, it's hard to find the few I want at the shops. Quite a few times I've come across packets ripped open but hidden at the back of the box with the car stolen.

Mainlines can be hit or miss, it all depends on the designer that worked on the casting. One big gripe I have is the scale inconsistency throughout all Hot Wheels, compact two seater vehicles having a length close to or equal to a big 4 door sedan. The Alpine A110 vs the Dodge Charger SRT, for example, one is 1/60 scale an the other is 1/68 scale. They don't look right when placed side to side.

I agree there are way more collectors today then a year or two ago. It feels like most of the people I see hunting in the stores are really only looking to resale or (scalp) the treasures hunts. There are alot of good brands emerging though like mini gt and tarmac that make amazingly beautiful cars that I have also started to collect. I order Greenlight from Amazon (2-3 month wait or $150-200 shipping for within one week) and also HW Premiums, and sometimes bite the bullet by paying $10 for the 2021 mainline Supra and $38 for the Slide Street, Car Culture HW Premium. But grateful that I can afford to maintain a 30 year old hobby. Please note the names of the other brands you mentioned. And for around £1.50 to £2.00 here in the UK, they're great value. I have to stick up for Mattel here - the quality control has been much better recently. I'm going through this phase as well. The price of Hotwheels in Indonesia is SG$1 less than Singapore in retails store. But since there are online marketplace thriving here, I can get most of my mainlines with prices under the retail prices as well so I don't need to hunt that often, just scrolling & checks out boom, you get what you want delivered to your house. Also, the premium hotwheels price here sometimes drop under SG$10 depending on the models in the online marketplace.

The main reason the peg hunting is frustating is not the higher number of new collectoirs, but, that there are people that support the scalpers, if the held themselves for a while, and get conformed for not being able to have few models, these resellers would have to find something else to do, but, unfortunately, you se a lot of said collectors channels taking several of few models, saying it is a models that many want and will raise in price, and encouraging theirs viewers to do so.

Greetings Drifter D, from your neighboring country, Malaysia. I used to collect Hot Wheels Cars back when I was 6 years old, those are the days when hot wheels cars are just plain basic, barely any racing livery tempo, but extremely heavy, true diecast weights like a Premium, give and take those days where you only get to keep the "Model without proper tempo" and card it as vintage up till this day. Those days when I buy hot wheels cars they are MYR 2 or 4 ? Hell those years like 2000s you can still find Hot Wheels STH on the rack easily because they ain't so popular, Sadly as time goes by, Hot Wheels chopped their cost and decide to turn mainline cars using Plastic / ABS material because of meeting the quality to play on Hot Wheels Trackset, if you used the old diecast metal Hot wheels on the trackset, it can't or barely able to play with. In this day, now it's MYR 10 in stores and it became an extremely popular hobby, as like you said, you can't find the hot mainlines one at all unless you are really lucky, not to mention STH because the staffs here in Malaysia have "Cables" that sweep away STH and JDM mainlines into their backstores and sell it online, MYR 20-30 for JDM and MYR 200 / 400 for STH. MYR 20 - 30 for a Mainline can easily score you a Hot Wheels Premium diecast metal with tempo for that price, which is so close to MiniGT for MYR 40 - 60 a pop here. MYR 200 - 400 for a STH can easily score you Ignition Model / Inno 64 Resin and so on, which so much better looking. Up till now I still collect Hot wheels Premium / Mainline, just that the disappointment is the price doesn't make sense that you're paying for something you can get in better detail / quality as you said. But then, childhood still hits so... I'll just buy em when the price from the reseller is right.

As said in the video, you can almost not find good ones in the stores and have to buy them elsewhere much more expensive and secondly, even some main lines look good on pictures but when I unpack them, they just feel cheap. So I just buy Premiums and it costs me quite a lot already because also buying a lot from resellers... but at least I enjoy them. The only Mini GT I have, is the blue Senna from Schmee150, they look really good.

I still remember that moment where I bought a Chrysler 300C Hemi, and the whole body made of plastic and I was like so sad about it. It really felt like I just gonna stop collecting Hot Wheels. It really sucks going out for hunting in Malaysia because you can't really find the real casting car that you want. The price is also very expensive here. Buying it from collectors cost double the price. We can just keep it for 30 years then we can sell it back for good money I guess. And I really hate it when reseller are selling new loose STH, especially the EK9 for 3 figures. I mean like where the hell did they get the loose units from. There's nothing special about STH anymore. It is no longer a limited thing like we used to know. Currently I am collecting a few models from Hot Wheels such as the Nissan Skyline Van, Nissan 300ZX, Honda Prelude, Datsun 240Z Custom, and Mclaren F1. I collect them from the first release up until the latest ones. Thats the only way for me to enjoy collecting Hot Wheels.

I stopped collecting Hot Wheels mainlines because other brands like Mini GT and Tarmac Works started to appear, and they provide so much for their price. To be honest, I would prefer getting one Mini GT car over five Hot Wheels cars as I am going for quality over quantity. And sheesh, Mini GT nails the details so much that I am no longer that impressed with Hot Wheels premium. Also, the chrome loss issue. It's so annoying, it basically makes the car unplayable for me. I started wheelswapping my mainlines and they look sick, but still, wheels are pretty expensive, so it's not really good for my budget 🥲 Another bad thing is that the pegs are terrible. Getting a hyped Hot Wheels car from a reseller isn't really good as the price doubles sometimes, so the pegs are still the way to go. However, all I see in the pegs are dinosaur cars. I understand the COVID situation, I guess this is the beginning of the end for Hot Wheels in the Philippines

The only mainlines that I collect are actual cars that I like and think are cool. Most of the mainlines I see nowadays I'm not totally interested in. I have been slowly buying more and more of the premium line of hotwheels this past year. It does get expensive since the premiums are more money than the mainlines though.

Just depends. Like I love seeing La Troca, one of my favorite older diecasts returning. And here it is still 1$ which is super nice to just buy a couple of fun cars I like. Especially HW originals. Can’t get Deora 2 in any other line.

Also, the new mainline cars isn't really that durable when it comes to paint applications. A friend of mine, (mustang hunter diecast), even noticed the decrease in paint quality. It chips easily while the older ones still holds up 20 years later.

Shout out from NY, by the way I completely agree with you. I now only collect mainlines if it has tampos and none of my other favorite brands (like mini gt and greenlight) make it . This applies to hot wheels premium line too. I rather have hot wheels premium over a mainline and I have actually sold my wheel swapped mainlines for premium or other brands that have better details

In my opinion, Collectors should always come to a point to ask ourselves why are we collecting and what really to collect, everyone should assess what cars will really bring happiness, is it really the best looking detailed cars or basic simple details will already do...is it for display purposes or for everyday play, for investment purposes or for whatever reason...for me every Collector have their own reason, view, and purpose of collecting, everyone is unique, so its always you the Collector yourselves can determine if main lines is worth collecting or not...maybe its precious for others, while for others its not worth the time to hunt for those simple models...just collect what will make you happy and focus on those after considering all important factors that really matters in your own personal collecting hobby...

I collect mainlines basically exclusively BECAUSE of the value for the price. It's rough sometimes not being able to find all the ones I would want, but I do enjoy hunting for them and I don't buy second-hand, so they are always ~$1.33 incl tax. Even with things direct from China, it is HARD to find little toys or models or anything with as much details as basic hotwheels have, for that low of a price, they are truly unmatched.

I still like some of the models the mainline have, I like making realistic city scenes and stuff, but you dont see everyone driving a 2 door sports car, so I look for taxis, four door sedans, station wagons, which premiums dont seem to always have.

Another good talk! Again, it's about perspective and aligning one's expectations with the price & effort paid to acquire what we like as collectors. Mattel is always cutting corners to keep prices down to appeal to _that_ market segment with mainlines but also offers mid-grade cars with some better details at the $3 USD point also going so far as to offer metal bases on some cars in 2024 for $3, something I would have never expected. Terribly sorry about the tampo errors on your Skyline, that's so disappointing!! Even RLC cars get it wrong as I've seen on Reddit.

Firstly they are only $1USD in the states....in New Zealand 🇳🇿 where I am from they have for the last 20years or longer cost S3NZD as for mainlines...collecting the whole set 1-250 is always worth it....but collecting what you like is ok too...I agree with Premiums...I collect those for the last 3years so worth it but I love the pictures too which is why I like them carded...thanks for your content 👍

My collecting story is that- two years ago I have children(twins boys), and one day I was shopping and I accidentally bought “welly” 1:64 cars Porsche and beetle. Then a few days later, I deeply interested about collecting. Studying this hobby in Scales 1:64, then 1:43, aand 1:18. I decided if started collecting so I need lot to pay many for high quality!! During last 2 years I have 5 Autoart cars 1 Norev 1 minichams, all of them in 1:18 scale. I love a lot of real car and it’s history, and from one side 1:18 scale stopping me from bought everything I like!!! But 6 months ago in the shop I accidentally saw HW, it was AUDI RS2, I bought it! It was my first time attention to HW. Now I have much than 80 HWcars, collecting real cars, not fantastic. I keep it all in foto frames of IKEA “SANNAHED” So!!!! Difference of Price HW 2€ and for example Autoart 300 € is high, BUT MAINLINE helps to have many small pieces with big history!!! Auto production not stopped, and new HW castings not stops too!

To each its own. Hotwheels Mainline still have enormous value despite the opinion stated here. Never forget that Hotwheels (Mattel) are a global toy brand while the Tomica basic diecast models have very strong following within Asia. The liquidity for those big diecast car manufacturers products ie. from Mattel & from Tomica are very strong. Despite their inferior quality (due to mass production) compared to the smaller specialists brands, Hot Wheels & Tomica have a worldwide following of collectors. Don't let the issue of quality blind you to the bigger market that is out there. Toy brands like Mattel & Hasbro hold the bulk of collectors' interest. One may pay a premium price for a better quality product from say, Hot Toys but will the purchasers be able to command a greater aftermarket resale price?
@DrifterD
@DrifterD 2 жыл бұрын
Resale value is definitely there for Hot Wheels. I think it has become the Hypebeast brand of the diecast world. It doesnt matter whether they are out of proportions. It has the Hot Wheels brand name so it has to be worth alot of money

These concerns aren’t a problem for me, because I’m collecting every single mainline, not just real manufacturers or jdm. For me I like to collect the mainlines for every year because it reflects the car culture of that era, and it’s cool to see the timeline of what design trends came and went, especially if you collect multiple years of one model like Muscle Tone or Twin Mill. Chrome loss is a serious bummer but since I don’t make a lot I can’t justify spending five to ten dollars on one car at a time.

And i thought im the only one who has this feeling. Same here, majority of mainline castings doesn't catch my interests anymore. Now focusing on premium lines, autoworld, greenlight, and other castings consisting of metal body, metal chassis, rubber wheels, and realistic detailed tampos.

I have now been very selective with mainlines. They still come with some cool ones with good amount of detail but now I’d rather open up premiums or mini GTs since they look all around better. Additionally I’m also expanding to 1:18 scales although they eat up space

I am from Brazil. I agree with you. Hot Wheels mainline are toys even when they have cool tampos and paints. But not all of them are perfect aligned or painted. Sometimes there are rough ones. As you said, it is better to buy a better casting form another brand or a Hot Wheels premium series.🙃

Ok so for my Borthday I decided yo get the volswagon idr and also the mazda 787b team transporter hotwheels set. The wheels are all rubber and just in total seriousley cool (a cool thing abt the 787b is that you can take the hood off and it reveals the engine bay problem is though is that it moves the wing a lot and I dont want it falling off just incase or getting damaged so I leave the hood on) but he is right, when I got the mazda I saw one part on the front lip of the car were there wasnt any gold paint. But besides the mazda ar the truck was perfect and so was the whole volswagon idr set

So I agree sometime some mainline are hard to find. I have a policy that if I ebay hunt, I do not spend more than about $6 bucks for one car unless it is a premium car and one of my favorite cars (I only collect cars I like). My local Targets are crap. They never have anything on the shelves. My only source is my local supermarket. I get some good mainline because nobody really shops there for HW. My advice to everybody is try to find one store that you can go to. I will never find premium car lines from HW or even treasure hunts or whatever but I am fine with what I get.
