Why I stopped Playing Wurm Online

For those that keep asking me when I'm going to upload some new Wurm Online videos...

I've just started and wasn't aware of the situation with Gamechest. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to play it a bit before it disappears into the sunset. I'm the kind of player who enjoys writing personal scripts for automation, and treats the game as if it's Rimworld. Not sure if I would have been welcomed while it was still alive, eather way.

Look, I don't like predatory company management. I know it sucks, and I agree to what both you and Drongo says. I honestly think it's good that you voice your oppinion on the matter and that it's ludicrous to try to dampen one persons oppinion, in the wrong scenario it can bite you right back in the b-hind, and even taking that chance is a noob mistake on the company. However, I do not care. Not about your oppinion, that thing is solid and great info and I respect it like diamonds, no what I do not care about is who runs the company. Sure, they are, obviously, out for our money, that's how games survive for almost 20 years, and since the change from being owned by themselves to being bought by Game Chest this lust for money has indeed escalated. But, this also has a chance to breath life into the game, which might have been on the road to nowhere right now, or even closed down. Change is not always for the better, and what I think is bad and weird behaviour from a company is not acknowledging peoples oppionions of you. But change can also bring more stuff, better developed code and a rejuvenation that otherwise surely wouldn't have come, or at least rarely - being stuck in that "I don't know what to do next" loop. What I mean is. I don't care. I don't. And you shouldn't either. If you like something, do it. If you don't like something, don't do it. If you want to play, because you like to see those numbers go up, you like the community and you like that bad ass skin you got on your backpack, just play. And if it feels like there is something missing, and you want to buy another month of premium, don't. Take a break again. Of course they will try to lure you in with different wizard tricks, they want to keep existing, and I want them to please do so. If this is the only chance moving forward, well then I'll take it, and if you can look past the diffrences you have with the current owners of the game and just see the game for what it is, all the glory of it, maybe you'll join me. Or maybe you won't. We all vote with our wallets in the end and you are entitled not to spend a single dime ever again on Game Chest - but if you like the game, well, your friends are still in there. Great content. Great oppinion. I'll subscribe, even though you're not a youtuber and have a job :) !

I'll keep my deed as long as my current silver balance allows. If Game Chest decides to let me spend my marks fairly within that period, I'll gladly return to play again. Of course, this is assuming that another game hasn't won me over by then.

@@whanethewhip Well there are so many good games out there so I see your point. I just loaded up your first episode of No Man's Sky, since that's always been a game on my radar. Maybe that'll have that effect on me? Keep voicing your oppinions!

I stopped for 2 reasons: 1 not enough players 2 I'm already paying to play a game but still there are paywalls behind basic functionality without it gameplay will be even harder like build a place without a settlement which costs even more money and it will decay like 1000% faster so you will be repairing non-atop

I want to add I have played on and off for like a decade but it's over now since the steam update which failed miserable. Players got very high but quickly most of them disappeared.

I started playing in 2006. I think that was when they started. I played up until 2011, 2012. I decided to give it another shot because 1) I got an email on October 18th that "Wurm is back" 2) new company behind it might breath new life into it, and I was excited, until I found out about the while Game Chest thing. Just a couple hours ago, I got the client installed and I logged in. I was a premium user last time I played which will explain the account still existing and my avatar in a place I do not recognize at. Not like I would remember anyway. But NO equipment and everything I tried to interact with, I couldn't. Apparently not a communal space. I need to get to sleep and might give it a better go over the weekend since I work tomorrow. But... I am not holding my breath. I don't know if I can get back into the game after so long.

I tried it way back in the early days too but each time I logged in it was at night and back then it was super dark at night so I quit only to return years later, but it still didn't stick. It wasn't until my 3rd attempt years later that I understood it and stayed, with breaks of course.

It is a nice walk down memory lane. And I have a little more free time now as I am not working two jobs anymore, so I can dedicate some time to an MMO again and I am curious where the game is going. I'll give it a try and see how I feel. I appreciate your content and the honest critique in this one. Maybe things will get better. I like having hope, but I am one of those optimistic pessimists. ;)

Thanks for making this - was an interesting watch and hear your insights. I'd not even really considered the marks system previously because my accounts tend to remain prem'd year round. So this is a strategy I've definitely had in my blind spot. Moderation since July this year has been some of the most aggressive I've seen since I started playing. The team has had some significant justified and unjustified anger to various decisions and it feels like from a PR and Community Management perspective they're just trying to get rid of their most vocal/influential critics from conversations and bringing voice to some of the most obvious justifiable criticisms. Hopefully there will be some changes in the future regarding approach to their monetization strategy and community engagement at which time you can make a happy return. Until then - all the best!

I agree with you, I am back in the game, and I don't like the idea that players can get things others cant, with paying more. I don't mind paying for playing, but when you have a system like this, the game need to be equal for all. Them there paly for free, will say get prem with coins, need to be able to do the same as all others, yes they don't use real money on the game, but they trade in game, and get silver, that others have got for real money, that is the greatness with this system, even them there don't pay real money still help the game, with letting them there have the money for paying things, spend more. Same system as EvE Online have, and it is great, it works, and it dos so them there don't have moeny to spend, still can have fun in a game, and still can support the game.

I'm pretty sure I said so in the video, so yes. But this doesn't excuse the predatory monetization in exchange for spending marks that I've earned with real money.
