You asked my opinion… so here it is. As a nod to your grandpa, keep the gables scalloped and red. Would go great with your gray siding. Look up James Hardie scalloped cement board in Country Lane Red for an example. It’s a nice soft red, and looks like it would coordinate well with your darker woods on porch and current back door color. 😊

Living in a home full of half finished projects can be very frustrating. I recommend prioritizing finishing a couple projects to boost your morale. You can’t do it all, but having a few things “done” feels really stinkin’ great. That’s what we’re doing around our house.

I stuck with you being amazed by your fortitude and hard work in continuing your family's legacy. I definitely understand priorities change in one's life and with you starting a family of your own those priorities will continue to change. Keep up the great work and if you live by the creed, "God, family, friends and country" in that order you will be happy and succeed in life.

I got hooked on your channel originally because I am also in the midst of remodeling a 100 yr. old farmhouse in Iowa. Two thoughts I hope might be helpful to you: 1) The gables on our house also have cedar shakes. We are going to cover them with “cedar shake” siding panels from 3M. The base siding on the house will be a taupe color (3M product also), so we chose to have the shake panels several shades darker than the rest of the siding. It is in the same color family so it blends very well with the rest of the house but is different enough to give a nice “pop” to the gables. That color and texture contrast will add a lot of character to the house. 2) We are doing a deep renovation to this home (i.e., electric, plumbing, walls, floors, windows, etc.) similar to what you are doing. This farm has been in my wife’s family since the 1800’s so I can relate to your desire to “do it with you own hands”. However, life has a way of getting in the way of the best project plans. My three-year plan is quickly turning into a five-year plan! So, my advice (if I may be so bold) is to be patient. It took decades for your house (and mine…) to get in the condition they are in, so it stands to reason that it might take some time to bring them back to pristine condition.
@humanoverlord6708
@humanoverlord6708 Жыл бұрын
skip the panels and just do real shakes. It is a DIY job, but labor intensive. Find a This old House episode or 5 on how to do them. This from a 35 year coastal builder. No paint. Use Red or White cedar depending on local pricing

Wonderful video! Your house is indeed an absolute masterpiece. That includes the magnificent wood floors. It's incredible that they're still in such great condition. To tear those out would be tragic, they're part of your family's heritage and the legacy your great grandpa left you. It's easy to patch, and is done often. It's impossible to recreate those now as it would take many skilled craftsmen so much time, the cost of the wood would be immense, that it would just not be possible. You have a treasure. Don't destroy it to have the same, ordinary flooring that everyone else has.

Hi Cole my great grandfather was German. He had a dream to build his family a house. They lived in a barn whilst he built the house with his own two hands only being helped with the heavy stuff. It took him nearly 3 years but it was a big magnificent house with three floors a cellar and attic and a pig sty and wash kitchen. He also ran his farm at same time. A farm we now have taken over. If you're not afraid of hard work the world is your oyster. You have the same grit as my grandparents did .

Cole. Keep up the good work. Continue to maintain your good sense of priorities. The house is a worthy project, but just as it has been there for a 100 years, it will still be there if it takes a little more time to remodel it. Eventually, you will sit on the porch and enjoy a cold drink while you watch the afternoon thunderstorm come in. As you stated, so much of your family depends upon the priority work being done. And your later comments about faith and relationship with Jesus are so, so right. It is amazing when we let the Lord help us with our problems. He is always faithful - "I will be with you always, even until the end."

I recommend a color that used to be extremely popular in the 70s called “harvest gold” for your attic shakes. It‘s a beautiful color that will really stand out on cold, gray winter days and it will look great in the summer too. It’s basically yellow with a little red added to give it an a gold, or more accurately a very, very slight orange hue. There are probably at least 2 or 3 commercials options at Home Depot that could be called “harvest gold”. It’s very common in Russia for people to paint their homes in rural areas with bright colors. I assume that they do it because it provides a nice contrast to the otherwise depressing, extremely long and usually colorless, gray winter weather. So, that’s my recommendation for ya for the attic shakes!

Regarding the electrical in your home, my advice is to have a new breaker panel installed (oversized for the furure) start feeding any new circuits to the new panel, feed your existing panel from the new. As time goes on you can slowly eliminate the old wiring and eventually get rid of the old panel. I made the mistake of trying to work with the old panel and then when the time came some wires were a little too short and ended up with junction boxes near the panel and it does meet code in my area, however I dont like the way it looks and wound up being more work in the long run.

While I loved watching the house restoration, I completely understand. Having grown up on a farm, I completely get it. There are never enough hours in the day. Good luck in all your endeavors. Yeah, brick red for the attic shakes. Vinyl is fine, you won't be able to tell from the ground. Purists may disagree, but, last longer, less maintenance.

You've done wonders Cole, no need to 'splain anything about your home!! You are keeping focus on what has to have your attention. Your home will come together in time. Just prioritize the outside jobs that affect heating and keeping moisture out. Good job!!🙏💕🙏

I would go for a timeless/classic look with your vinyl shakes so you don't tire of the color after a few years. A darker gray (like a charcoal gray) or a natural cedar tone would add some dimension and style to the overall look of the house. The whole property is looking so nice, and you have worked hard. Thanks for being such an inspiration and taking us along for the ride!

There was a lot of family living that has gone on in your home. I can imagine there's a real sense of protecting that priceless family history, as well as adding your own family history to the house. The chimney against the roof looks nice...why not consider red cedar shingles. There should be an app where you take a photograph of your house and then apply various colored shingles where you want to see which you think works best. So much to do!

Personally, I would want those attic windows to POP. A brighter shade of green would drawn the eye but red would bring your eye to that detail and set off the siding.

Good job Cole! It takes a real man to admit he isn't doing something. May God Bless you and your family! And may you grow in faith.

The smartest thing you can ever do is accept that you need experts to help to make things work out. Getting the structure worked out goes a long way to making things work out properly. Keep rolling!

The word you’re looking for (maybe) is “cathartic”? Long time subscriber and it’s so nice to watch you all move forward in your lives and watch the farm grow and change. It’s cathartic for me watching your channel.🤗🤗
