Keeping that area for nature is a great idea plus it gives your children a play space that city kids would die for. Plant as many trees as possible to leave a legacy for the future.

The best thing to do with an overgrown Grove like that is to cut down all the dead stuff, after it freezes and burn it. When you burn The Grove it will make the ground visible and you will have tons of wildflowers growing next year. Healthier trees and no fire will not kill the alive trees. The native trees actually like the fire around them.
@TKevinBlanc Жыл бұрын
If you're making a little meadow there, maybe plant it with native wildflowers. We've done that in a couple of places in our yard. You can just mow it at the end of the season. Attracts pollinators and songbirds. Watching the colors appear is fun. It reseeds itself.

My step grandfather had a piece of property like your little wooded area. A lot of dead trees, scrub, weeds, berrys. He first removed the dead trees and stumps, laid paths then planted trees in areas to make shady spots, grottos, picnic areas, various swings, a grape arbor maze. He planted all types of flowers, berrys, fruit trees. By the time i met him had had worked on it for 30 years and it was amazing. He spent the rest of his life tinkering on it and every year there was something new.

If you want to keep that grove as a windbreak and recreation area I can recommend hybrid poplar trees from a Frysville, PA. nursery. I planted a bare rooted 18" tree in Denver, CO. and as advertised it survived and grew to 12 ft tall in less than three years. Firewood size in 5 years. Rooted MANY from cuttings and wrapping the limbs. The leaves and small limbs are herd animal forage.

How nice friends gave you a lovely tree. Yes, for sure some of those dead trees need to be removed but keep a few out of the way for Owls to nest (they eat rodents for you) and also for woodpeckers (they eat bugs). Realize Cole that Nature is messy, really, it's how it is intended to be to help all critters live, so easy does it on the mow down please. Yes this will be great for the kids to play, dig, have picnics and enjoy nature. Keep up the great work, making the farm easier to manage is wonderful to watch you continue. Now THE HOUSE!!!

How about putting down lines on the floor to designate and separate the different areas? In my experience, those give you a visual "kick" when you place down things onto them, helping to prevent stuff from being put down carelessly. Same for the driveway. Spray-painting lane lines would help the truck drivers take the whole wide turn to the bins and would keep stuff out of the lanes.

Would be great for cutting metal for frame reinforcement on trucks or cutting pipes /etc if its in good working condition with proper blades.. way easer to get a straight cut's then hand sawing / even chop or table saw.. just for cutting metal alone its worth it. no changing blades if its set to just cut metal.. leaving chop saw/table saw for wood or smaller jobs..

I live in Missouri and hand planted 33,000 trees on my 20 acres, to include Walnut trees. They are very slow growers taking 10 years just to get to 15 feet. They also don't start producing walnuts until 5-10 years to harvest the nuts. If harvesting the wood it takes 50-80 years and makes beautiful furniture, clocks, etc and worth a fortune. A single 80 year old tree can be worth $10,000. I planted 200 walnut trees 7 years ago and they are only chest height.

Be well and thanks for inspiring other shop owners to keep things organized and safe.

That bandsaw is for much of the same stuff you're cutting with the chop saw, but you don't have to worry about an abrasive disk exploding, you don't need to stand there and operate the saw while it cuts, it makes a better cut, and can cut shorter parts safely without the chance of flinging them across the shop.

I'd put the barn steel up in the attic of the barn. Yeah, Be a pain to dig back out, but it'll be out of the way. How often will you need to access it? Also, why not put pallet rack down one side. Get some uprights that are narrower, like 30" or 36". Then you aren't eating up much space, yet you'll have a ton of shelf area. Typical pallet rack has wire shelves that won't collect dust.

I would place the air compressor behind the door where you wanted to put a trash can and lay an air pipe to the front of the shop, just having a hose reel close to the compressor, one in the middle of the shop and then one in the front by the bench, that way it is still securely on the ground, but in a corner where you wouldn't use the space otherwise anyway.

Thank you for explainging about the grove; the different trees, their condition and the interactions with the production crops and the local flora and fauna; the natural habitat. Interesting to hear that in 1915 or so the government was hoping for the walnut wood for rifle stocks. They can be groomed for future gradual harvest; 'most valuble timber tree'. Perhaps some veneer for a house project. Pines have been troubled by beetle infestations. If so, the pines will release a lot of sap in response. Sorry to hear of the Ash tree infestation by the emerald ash borer; 99% are expected to die. Wonderful to think of your grandfather planting the pines and years later you and your family playing in and around them. Now you planting a tree with your family; in future years the grand kids will be telling about you, their grandpa. What kind of tree were you given?

Yet another project could be a path from the house to the grove with native prarie grassland along side. I understand there is a 'strips' project using native grasses around cropland to minimize losing topsoil to winds. The deep roots of native grasses hold moisture in the soil and create a horizontal capillary flow of moisture. Might be helpful against heat and high winds.

Unlike your other choices for cutting you can start it and walk away. It wi cut true and there is no slap to grind. It also cuts angles. Does a great job o. Square tube or pipe.
